Great review, mate. I have the Sherwood 10" Thicknesser/Planer Combo. I purchased it second hand from Dirk. Once I got it home, I swapped out the straight cutters for a helical spiral cutter. The difference was mind-blowing. Night and Day. I absolutely love the machine. It transforms the worst timber into dressed pieces of gold. Hands down, my best purchase to date. Second best purchase would have to be the metal detector. I've got the same one as you, purchased from Carbatec. Anyway, can't see myself ever being without this machine, game changer to say the least.

Thank you Chris, much appreciated. I always referred to my old thicknesser as a time machine - old stuff goes in and new stuff comes out! But absolutely mate, they are a game changer and worth every penny when working with old timber.

Just grabbed one from a scrap yard. Seized motor bearings and a shredded belt. Otherwise looks to be in ok condition.
The cutter head bearings seem to be in ok condition but will get replaced at the same time.
It's a fairly quirky machine to disassemble and motor and cutter bearing s will basically have it pulled down to the last nut and bolt.
The motor housing is almost entirely plastic with the exception of the end cap and a sleeve cast into the other end to take the bearing.
I'm keen to see how the machine runs and try a spiral head thicknesser for the first time.

Where you been Ryan? A planer/thicknesser, with a spiral cutter head, is a huge asset, especially when you are working with "sketchy" lumber and of course the metal detector! I need proper instructions or sometimes you can find good help on UA-cam. I once took a tool back to the store because the manual/instructions was crap, not even proper English...I said to the guy, "Take back your tool, I did not even take it out of the box, these instructions don't work for me. Can I have my money back please." He looked at me like I was nuts! I am glad you love your planer/thicknesser!

Thanks Ryan for sharing this. I am very new to woodworking. I bought mine a few months ago at a local store who I got very little help from to set up. I only found out about the lock from a Facebook group. I also spent ages levelling the infeed outfeed that was causing snipe. I just learned about the turning of the blades, commonly used depth settings and depth marker warning from you. I guess young people relies on social media for answers which shouldnt be the way (if the manual was good). Thanks again!

The guy was okay but I struggled to get him to sell me things I need to set myself up as a woodworker. I had to make several return trips for the dust extractor (didn't realise I needed one), then another return trip for the hose clamp for the dust port, then yet another one for stands.... I have a Ryobi Ryan. It looks like a 70s version of a pop up toaster. All green and stuff but I love it. My first attempt at laminating a table top was a disaster. It looked like I was drunk when I glued it. All lumpy and horrible.
I wanted to see how this little beauty would handle the worste I could throw at it. Although it took a few passes the result was astonishing. From the ashes rose the phoenix. That same table top now sits pride of place in my sons kitchen.
    Talk about money well spent.
ps. I think it's in the instruction book that the first piece of wood you pass through your new planer must have a nail in it. That happened to me :-(

Of course the instruction manual says it has two outlets and is held on by three screws... Good on 'em. The only machine I have bought that had 100% bang on instructions was my dust extractor from Hafco, and that's because they included their own detailed instructions along with the manufacturer instructions. Definitely better than the one i purchased in many ways ??

Not the easiest thing to find a space for storage.

    Don't use it much now.
But when i do i need to find out where the grooves are ????

One thing you do need though IF you Own or Buy one, is a decent dust extractor with decent storage space for the chips ??

Great to know the Blades are available from Bunnings.
It was where my GMC Thicknesser actually came from.
Back in the days when Bunnings would stock the GMC range.
It has definitely been a handy machine to have.
The purchase was a little overkill for how much i planned to use it ??
But i have used it to make some replacement Door Steps out of Merbau then finished them with a Router for the water line rebate ( IF that makes sense ?? LOL ) then Belt Sander to finish it off.
A am a bit of a Closest Wood Worker, LOL.
Something i enjoyed when i was younger but eventually that was replaced with my current work.
      Still have all the equipment.
Not totally sure what i will do with it long term as my Son is not much good at anything to with his hands.

Today was day 16, I rang them for an update and they told me Makita couldn't get one before JUNE. It's currently the start April. "Did you want a refund" the woman said, "Bloody Oath" I said. Now what do I do? Buying a Carbatec I see as a step backwards (according to the comparison videos I've seen) The Yankee DeWalt I can't afford. Ryobi and Ozito are cheap and nasty. It sounds like a Carbatec, but I'm not sure, it's $155 cheaper than the Makita (I'm talking about the 13 inch 317 not the 330) I'm not game to buy a used unit, I've been caught too often with pre-owned stuff.
