    The island is called "The Fisherman's Kettle" because they dug up several antique kettles used by the first fishing colony on the island to make tea.
    Fun fact: the archaeologist who dug up the kettles is called Weego There, a distant relative of Hugo. He supports the theory that the introduction of coffee was a crucial factor for the eventual demise of the colony - NOT the lack of sardines, as postulated by scientific consensus.
    We know very well who is right; if you don't have sardines, you go with anchovies. But if you don't have tea...

    Yea, it’s time to add more cross harbour transports like subways and tunnels. You do tend to build above ground and follow the terrain and focus in funnelling people into hubs which means that big picture stuff like cross district transports may be overlooked a bit more. This episode is a good start to a plot line to improve that kind of thing

    If you use the 'Optimised Outside Connections' mod, you can disable 'Dummy traffic', meaning trains, airplanes, ships, and highway traffic traveling through your map, but without interacting with your city. Never used the option myself, but it might help with any train problems in the future. (it might feel a bit like cheating, but with CS's traintraffic AI as it is, that feeling goes away pretty fast...)

    • @wm-nu1yf

      I use that mod and it does help. I never get backups like this anymore. On this map, however, all of the outside traffic comes from the same edge of the map. They tend to take the shortest route, so trains traveling all the way around is unlikely. Limiting intercity passenger traffic to just the area around Tearantula and the airport would clear a lot of traffic from the network on the other side of the ridge.

    • @iris657

    You could do one-way-overpasses (or underpasses). Right now, a lot of train junctions are built in a way, that at least in one direction trains are going to cross the tracks coming from the other direction. If you build overpasses/underpasses in that direction, trains won’t need to cross the opposite tracks anymore, so they won’t need to stop and wait for the opposite track to actually be clear

    • @KaiHenningsen
      @KaiHenningsen 3 роки тому +2

      General rule of thumb: for good train junctions, you want to build it from purely one-direction single tracks. For anything else, you really need an AI that understands blocks (which is how the big boys do it), and I don't think one exists for C:S.

    • @The_Tactical_Taco
      @The_Tactical_Taco 3 роки тому

      @@KaiHenningsen There are blocks in CS. Every stretch between 2 nodes is a block. This allows for intersections without any problems if you move the next node far enough away from the intersection.
      But this is really hard and counter intuitive to do. A view like the Factorio train block view would be great.
      I generally build a roundabout at ground level from 1-way tracks. Then run 1 track under and 1 track over. Finally connect the lines to the roundabout using 1-way tracks. Navee had any problems with trains being stuck at a junction. But the AI still sucks enough to give problems around stations.

Railroad onto rail station with low speed and bypass without any speed limit. Then trains will use bypass without speed limit, even if this bypass is longer than the way through the station.

    You don't need to create a separate train network, big B. For instance, at the 22min mark where you had the cargo station, if you split the train track off each side and made a tunnel or bridge, and then had it so a train line connects from the right side to another right side, and another for left to left, then trains never cross over each others line. And if one is currently doing so, the next train along takes the detour instead.

    One of the things I love about the monorail is that the rails doesn't have to go "on a curve". They can do turns up to 90 degrees without issues. There was no need to give a curve so big for it.
    And now that you added the metro stations, you may want to check on the rest of the transport routes. Since you have now provided a faster transport and with more capacity, citizens will choose that over the others so you are likely to have empty transports running now (it happens to ferries, in particular).

    A couple of things:
    1) If you have ferry transport set up, each of the ferry terminals work as fish warehouses.
    2) for your train bypasses, if you uses a 1 way track on each side of the terminal for the bypass (one will probably have to be in a tunnel under the station) you won't have cross over issues. The cross overs cause a LOT of the train blockages.

    1. You can attach a one way track that goes over the main line via bridge so that the trains can easily bypass to go on the opposite side of the track without having to cross each other on the same level of track. When there is a track leading off from the main line, this suggestion can help rather significantly in helping traffic flow.
    2. A tunnel can be added between the outside of the map and the main trainstation for trains coming for the outside of the map for tourists so that it can also bypass all the junctions like suggesting 1. but with tunnels.

    Biffa. I know you've been playing the game a long time. You obviously know what you're doing and are free to play however you want. I have one suggestion that has been driving me mental about your public transport. For years you've been running your lines (trains, busses, metro, monorail) these incredibly long distances with a million stops. They work MUCH better if you use express routes that have only a few, or one stop(s). Let the passengers switch lines themselves. All of your vehicles get overloaded by people that are going to the farthest stops and they can't collect more. Then you have to add more vehicles to make up the difference. If you limit the stops the vehicles make more room for new passengers and you need fewer of them. A metro line that only goes from one stop to another and back works way better than one that goes all the way across the map stopping at every station.

    Another thing to always bear in mind with Cities:Skylines is the journeys that passengers will want to take. Sims in Cities go from a residential area to an industrial area to work, or to a commercial area. Sims never go from residential to residential, nor from commercial to commercial, nor from industry to industry. That's simply how the journey AI was created. So whenever you have a bus, tram, or metro, you need to understand that people getting on at the first of three stops in a row going through a residential area won't be getting off at either of the next few stops, only where they are in a different type of zone (commercial or industrial in this case), or where they are changing transport at a hub.
    Having too many stops in a row in the same type of zone will cause the transport to become overloaded as people get on, and nobody is getting off, so the last few stops in the same sort of zone may have only already filled vehicles arriving, meaning the queue of waiting people never goes down. This becomes a really, really important thing to know when you plan out a large industrial zone, or a large downtown commercial zone. All traffic to and fro will be coming from another type of zone, except where they are changing transport types as part of a longer journey from a different zone type.

  • @macaidwin

    Hello Biffa,
    I solved the problem where trains are backing up by changing most of the junctions with overpasses and underpasses. In the way that trains leaving or entering the junction do not cross the track in the other direction. In the Netherlands the railway company changed a lot of junctions this way. I believe this will help a lot to prevent the trains stopping at all at one point in time.
    At cargo stations I make use of a single track bypass around the station and a single track bypass in the other direction diving under the station.
    I also found a nice double track cargo station with the same footprint as a vanilla cargo station. This gives more cargo capacity.
    I would love to see how you create a beautiful junction with over- and underpasses to serve al directions without crossing tracks. I am not so good in making it beautiful and symmetric.

    28:40 The "no path" problem with the metro is because there is above ground metro in the glass box train station, and below ground metro in a separate station underneath it.

    I figured the extension to No Problem Atoll and beyond could be covered by the redundant Metro Line 9. It's looking like you might have to split the line at the glass box train hub to keep up. Another thing you could do is take the above-ground Metro Line 1 and run it underground and across to No Problem Atoll as well to take some of the heat off the Tea > Maple line.

    My work office (Osaka University) is about 150 metres from the Osaka monorail; at this point the monorail is the 4th layer of a stack of transportation: the bottom layer is a 3-lane each-way motorway, running in trench between a 3-lane each way frontage road which has crossings over the motorway every so often. Near where the entrance to the university is is a pedestrian footbridge running over both, and also running under the monorail, so the monorail is quite elevated. So don't be afraid to run monorails right over the top of motorways etc., it's entirely prototypical.

    I have a few things I noticed;
    1. The fishing island; the roads you now have going along the factories stop in the middle, requiring traffic to go back out and go all around the square; this means that all traffic that comes in will go around the square and exit the same amount of time later; if you extend those factory roads all the way across and make them one-way, I think traffic gets stretched out a bit, making things better.
    2. 21:47 I'm not sure, because it's all rather high up; but here there seems to be three major train lines merging together. One from Primrose;, one parallel below the highway, and one parallel above the highway (that is made up of two tracks.) There is however, no way for the trains who want to go from the two tracks parallel the highway over to primrose, or vice versa. So the trains would have to first go past this merger to the station, and then reverse back down. I'm sure this doesn't help the issue; get a track curving away from primrose to the left and this problem would be gone.
    3. 28:24 I think you couldn't add the stop because the game was trying to add the stop to the above ground platform, rather than the below ground one.
    4. Part of the reason you're making so much money I expect is also because you have such good public transport; not sure how accurately the game simulates real life, but walkable and bicyclable cities make more money because shops and touristy areas are actually easily reached on the level the actual commerce is going on; part of the money could be all the additional taxes your citizens are paying because business is booming.
    5. Part of the reason why there's so many people using the trains and now metro because apart from much more touristy and much slower ferries and the car there is no way to cross over the water. Back when you put in the bus terminals and gave it a bunch of buses, none of these buses crossed over. Each terminal has it own small section of city it services, and this section is effectively cordoned off for buses; they don't get out. Like and I and others have said back then; a bus express line that goes around the city and only stops at the major terminals (and maybe one stop somewhere half way there) would much better improve bus service and have busses that go across the water. You have expanded much since then, so bus stations further away from this core part of the city, around the Tearantula station and the opera section should probably get their own express line from there to the main central bus station.
    6. Speaking of express lines; I noticed the new metro line you just put in, the metros are just full; can't pick up any at minor stations, nobody needs to get off and they stay on all the way to the end for to last station; leaving the intermediate stations high and dry. It might be good to split this line in a stop line and an express line. Express line goes from Tearantula, Glass box station and the final stop they all get off, and bypass all the other stops. The stop line meanwhile bypasses the glass box station and only goes to the intermediate stops. I think that would help with services more travelers in particular at the smaller intermediate stops.

    The cross-laguna metro is a great ... but then on the little island you are basically cloning the train line with just a few fill-in stops added that can take away passengers from the monorails.
    The little islands have a different problem: the highway and the rail line are separating the laguna side and the other parts of the islands. Busses need to drive quite long to get to the other side creating unappealing transit connections. After crossing the laguna and a metro/rail transfer station the metro could concentrate on areas like Orelando and improve transit in areas that need improvement. Yes, the rail stations were full of passengers in the beginning but many of them were possibly transfer passengers from places like Orelando ...

    Hi Biffa! Great video, as usual! Since a capacity of 150 is unrealistically low, you might consider finding some higher capacity metro trains in the workshop. After all, this IS your "modded city" and adding higher capacity vehicles, in this case, isn't "cheating". It makes the game a little more realistic. Just something to consider.

    The problem I have with the Metro in this game is the capacities. In my city each metro car can hold about 66 people just seated! When it's busy and the standing room is taken up it can reach up to 100 per car and when it's that busy the city runs 8 (up from 6) car trains. Even with the 6 car trains and nobody standing that's about 400 people per train with capacity up to about 600 passengers. I always use a mod to increase the number of people per train in my cities as it's more realistic than 180 for the vanilla game.

    Part of the reason your income has gone up is because the CARGO trains are able to get OUT of the city and every train that reaches its destination brings in a lot of money. Best way to stop trains jamming up in junctions is to avoid flat junctions (ones where tracks actually cross each other in a way that trains can block each other) and replace them with grade separated junctions (tracks go over/under each other to avoid trains crossing in front of each other)

    Free public transport motivates your population to go wherever they want in the "city". That means even tourists who come to your town are getting free public transport AFTER the plane. So they're going to all your shops, your concert area, the zoo, the teasney world, those commercial areas with the special buildings, the arenas. THATS WHERE THEY SPEND MONEY. Phoenix Arizona does something similar with their lightrail. If you have a ticket to some event down town, you don't pay to use the lightrail. They accept the fact that giving you transportation will make you spend more money IN THE CITY because you're not paying a fee for a taxi or a bus, you're getting RIGHT DOWNTOWN to the stadium or the concert halls, etc.

    I think all the money that was coming in at the end of the video was from your freight trains being able to get out of the city more quickly. Usually your industry areas make 50-100k in profits, but if the freight can't escape the city then it may have been suppressed, and then when you removed a number of passenger trains I think the system became un-blocked. Awesome video, thanks.

    The AI still works with 'how can I get from A to B the fastest'
    If you up the speed limit on tram and monorail lines (rail and metro are unlimited by default i think) they will see a huge increase in usage. For the tram that works best if you use roads that have a dedicated tram line. The monorail does also get a speed limit by default that is somewhat close to the road traffic speed.
    Same for upping speed limits on dedicated bus lanes.
    They also take frequency into account which means that if you reduce the number of vehicles on a line, less people will use of it so the number drops even more.

  • @TheFunsportler
    @TheFunsportler 3 роки тому

    I think you'll need to expand almost the entire rail network to be two parallel one-way tracks for each direction. This also enables you to create over or underpasses instead of making trains cross the tracks from the opposite direction. Plus creating more exits from the glass station to take stress away from the funnel points on the left and right. Might not be strictly necessary right now, but would make sense from city planning perspective.

  • @jonathanmarsh8119
    @jonathanmarsh8119 3 роки тому

    Biffa, look for more assets for buses, trains, metro, and monorail. There are a lot of them with better capacities that are modeled on real vehicles.
    For the railways, it will be a huge rebuild, but if you use the parallel network tool you can create a railway which is quite dense and have multiple tracks. Then whenever you reach a clearing you can spread the lines apart and put in a short line to swap between left and right and then right and left. Allowing trains to take either side between areas. Also you can put in a small turn-around track for the trains in case they need it. I use that a between each of my industry areas to allow trains to move between them without having to go around the entire map.

    Your new metro lines are connecting hubs that are already connected by existing lines. Redundancy is always great, but some of the redundancy here isn't contributing much. The best use of metros is to criss cross across grids and connect points of interest that aren't already connected/are otherwise difficult to connect, instead of laying down new lines that perfectly compete with old ones.

  • @leeroberts1192

    If you have 3 separate train networks (external connection - ending at a freight exchange - over to a local freight, local freight and passenger). You might need to split the passenger network into two (external and internal) if the passenger lines get too busy. You can also improve your train junctions by using flying junctions. The "conflicting connection" is replaced with a fly-over or dive-under and passes over/under the other track to join to the correct track

    Right. Your money likely comes from a flood of income for industry. As I recall, you "fixed?" part of the trainline and suddenly exports are going out and kaboom in the in the taxation office, where there is a river of money pouring in.
    In all seriousness, the money is an indication that everything is running properly. The power can be fixed by using the ocean power station you place on a quay, which you love to do.
    Fixing train problems is basically looking like using cargo harbour with trainline to kick cargo onto water. Ships can clip, but trains can't. Or planes, but that takes a lot of space.
