First Dead Space is somewhat of a masterpiece. The fact they made you as the player so immersed in a silent protagonist, is a true testament of how amazing the world building, atmosphere and sound design was.
Son, Yet another fantastic game that I never got a chance to play. Your footage is phenomenal as always and your breakdown and critique impeccable. Thank you for once again showing so much love in your endeavors. You make all your dads proud.
Dead Space gave me one of my favorite gaming stories to tell. I was pretty young when I first played, and I didn’t realize you could run. So I just walked on the beginning segment where the necromorphs first chase you through that hallway. Made it 10x more scary lol
When I saw Event Horizon for the first time, a few years after Dead Space was released, I was totally astonished by how well the game captured the atmosphere of that movie.
A brilliant way to finish off a lazy Sunday. I found your channel when you were doing your Silent Hill retrospectives. I follow several really good game reviewers and the quality of your work is on par with any of them. Each of your channels has a different style and focus. I enjoyed your Yakuza and Fable reviews, neither of which I ever played. I really love Dead Space, I find myself playing some older games because they are well-designed in terms of narrative goals and have a simplicity in their gameplay. Again, love the quality of your work. I hope interactions like these help your channel gain traction and grow.
Well said. I agree completely. For me it was the Max Payne retrospective. Just totally nailed it in my opinion and yeah the composition of this guy's videos are the best in terms of long form video game lore/analysis videos. Like.... THE BEST!!! If you read this man, THANK YOU for doing what you do and I hope you continue to keep doing these videos because, for me, you're one of the few content creators I truly look forward to releasing new videos. Which is more lucrative for you: "joining" your channel on youtube or donating via patreon? I want to donate but also want to make sure you get the most out of it.
truly the sound engineers of this game deserved every praise they received, and the level designers combining this 2 truly created one of the most memorable experiences
Dead Space 1 is divided into separate chapters that are ALL named. If you take the first letter of each chapter name, you end up with the message..."Nicole is Dead." Pretty creepy stuff hidden in plain sight. Also, there have been various novels, comics & other games that have been released which greatly increases its compelling lore.
Dead Space was the game that got me into horror games. I can still remember seeing the twinkle twinkle little star trailer on TV late at night, and being absolutely terrible of it. It was the first horror game that made me love the feeling of being scared. Such an amazing game.
One small detail I love about the weapons in this game is how the node paths follow the weapon designs. It's a nice touch to the upgrade system that makes it feel like I'm tuning every part of the weapon.
it's so strange to have a game where the main character shares your name, especially when it's rare for that to ever happen and it's a damn horror game
You're an absolute legend man I have legitimately no idea how you manage to put these out like that but am i looking forward to watching that later. Proud of you son!
Best thing about this game has to be that since monsters tend to only jump at you if you look at them due to an AI thing, so if you want to speed run you play Issac as if you're looking at the ground going "I can't see you, you can't see me" in more horrified repetitions.
Your timing on this video is perfect son. I just got mom to start playing the game for the spooky season. And as per usual your work is fantastic, I'm proud of you son
For the ammo criticism that you mentioned, this game has a similar ammo drop/pickup system to Resident Evil 4. So for example, if you keep the Ripper in your inventory all the time, then you will most definitely find ammo for it. Another thing is that some of the pickups in the game that are not enemy drops are not random meaning that they are already set up by the devs. Which means that if you only have the Ripper in your weapon slot then you will find Ripper Blades from enemy drops ammo wise.
I already saw a complete breakdown of everything Dead Space from Suggestive Gaming's video, but since it's YourFavoriteSon I cannot help but tag along for another ride!
Not entirely true. You can, and a remake can absolutely surpass the original masterpiece in every way just like RE2 did. However what you cannot really replace is what you felt while playing the original for the first time.
Small note for this game: The ammo drops you get are influenced by the weapons you have equipped. So if you have just the plasma cutter and line gun you'll get ammo for those weapons mainly (you'll still get ammo for the other weapons but are less common of drops if they're not equipped in your inventory).
I am so happy to see this. I am smack dab in the middle of Yakuza 4 and i havent watched the recent videos just because im clearing out the series. Nobody breaks down a franchise better than our favorite son.
Hey Son! Glad to see another video, although I didn't play all the way through dead space and it wasn't on the hardest difficulty. I found the game play really good and never had an issue with running out of Ammo, I threw in plenty of melee attacks and would disable and stomp on enemies when I could, the stomp mechanic is actually Lore relevant because in many cases in the books the characters will stomp a necromorph to bits after disabling it to conserve ammo. The flamethrower is definitely the weakest out of all the weapons I found, only useful for its alternative fire mode to lay traps in large arenas.
I already know this is gonna be some s-tier stuff and I thank you and all other CC's making quality stuff about Dead Space, you're making the wait for the remake that bit more bearable
Son, you find the ammo for the weapons you got equiped. If you only equip the cutter and the machine gun, you'll begin to only find ammo for them. I never used the ripper and I never found ammo for it
I love the Dead Space series, including the comics, books, movies, and spin off games, so I'm looking forward to you covering all of them. I really hope someday you get round to doing this with the Resident Evil franchise...so many books, films, etc. Even only canonically speaking, we're talking 9 main games, 9 spin off games, 3 cgi movies, 1 cgi series, 2 manga, and 1 stage show 😅
@@YourFavoriteSon1 finished the whole video now! Great as always. JSYK, the reason you kept getting ammo for the cutter was because you were carrying it. The game largely generates ammo based on what you're carrying. Other interesting things: If you cut up a corpse before an infector can get to it, the infector can't turn it into a necromorph, which makes some later battles a lot quicker/easier. And a huge reason the sound was such a big deal is because of how it was implemented. Each enemy basically has an audio node attached to it, so the closer it gets to you the louder the music gets, it's fascinating and was a pretty new idea at the time IIRC.
one of my absolute favorite games, it really got me into horror games as a teen. love the breakdown of this game, its great to hear the enthusiasm and appreciation for the care that's gone into it too. have you seen that John carpenter is interested in making a dead space movie? that'd be pretty hype.
I absolutely love this game series & am so stoked to play the Remake (if I can scrounge up the money). My 4 main weapons in DS1 were the plasma cutter, pulse rifle, flame thrower (it reminded me of Alien) and the weapon that acted like a shotty by shooting out a blast of energy. In DS2 & 3 I replaced the flame thrower with the rifle that had a zoom function on it. I tried out the other weapons like the line cutter & others, but they just never appealed to me. Not dssing them, just saying they didn't appeal to me personally. Also, its important to note that you will find ammo based on the weapons you have equipped. If you are using a weapon that you don't care for but keep finding ammo for it then ditch the wepaon into your store inventory and you'll eventually stop finding ammo for it. Again. the weapons you have equipped will tend to determine the ammo type you pick up. You may sometimes pick up other ammo types but it will be reduced when you DON'T have the weapon in your immediate inventory. And even though you can carry up to 4 weapons, if you carry less (like two) then you will mostly find ammo for what you have (those two). You may find other ammo types, but again it will be reduced. You mostly find ammo for what you have equipped.
I just wanted to say thank you, when war started I had to leave my home leaving my PS4 and switch so I had no way to play games and I found your channel and at least to some extent can experience games again until I'll be safe to return. You rock, I love each and every of your videos, you're doing such an amazing job I can't even imagine how much time and effort you put into them. Keep up the good work. (definitely sold Yakuza series to me).
I just beat this game for the first time a few weeks ago. It truly is a masterpiece. Never played a game in this genre before so this blew my mind. The pacing, sound design, story beats taking in gameplay, length, audio logs, silent protagonists so you put your own fears into Isaac, the design of the ship, etc. So so so good. I wish I could play this game for the first time again. It's an experience I will obsess over for years to come. Use headphones if you play. And game on.
My favourite part of the weapons is that most of them are mining tools turned to weapons. Once to extract minerals, now to eliminate an alien infection.
Regarding the ammo shower for the Ripper: The game gives you ammo for the weapons you carry with you. So, if you just put the ripper in the inventory, then it wouldn't give you ammo for it. Just a heads-up.
Perfect timing son. I just finally got in to this series for October and have fallen head over heels for it. Just about done with the second one, super excited for the remake.
OMG you are doing my favourite series, yessssssss !! 😮💗 i just finished watching i'm surprised you didn't mention the chapters giving you a hint.. I won't spoil it for anyone, just look if u feel like it, thank you for this vid, i been thinking alot about the remake that's releasing in January, i got feeling they might force feed the story to us. I have the same feeling for RE 4 remake, to me DS 1,2 and RE4 are perfect games to me, but i'm looking forward to schofields new horror game, that really looks cool.

Hey son! Glad to see you doing "Dead Space" now after the Yakuza franchise (Loved the reviews) and excited to see your path with my other favorite game which is dead space. Let's gooooo!
Man, you burn through multiple games faster than I can play through 1. I'm still playing Judgment and you've played through that, the 2nd game, and now Dead Space.
One of my favorite games growing up, glad I gave it a chance. Back then all I would play is call of duty and didn’t think I would like it at 12 years old. Words can’t describe how happy I am to see this game remastered.
Dead space will forever be one of my favorite games… gameplay, story and all that aside, the achievements and the hunt for them will always be legendary for me! I know a lot of ppl don’t talk about the cheevos… but bro, after playing this game like 5 times, I stoped playing it for about a year, after that year, I came back to it and wanted to 1K it, I was only missing two achievements, beating the game on the hardest difficulty and beat the game only using the plasma cutter… I ain’t no punk so I did it in one Playthru! It was epic!!
Gratifying to hear another gamer articulate the emotional impact that simply "being" in the DS game provides, as a mixed palette of emotions in varying hues for each brain that sits down to experience it 👍
I strangely agree and disagree with your points on The Ripper. It was my favorite gun in the game, I loved the visceral feeling of sawing off limbs one at a time with it while it screeched out. You can pretty consistently kill one Necromorph with one blade, which makes it the most ammo friendly gun since most caches and drops for Ripper ammo have at least three whole blades in them. Once you upgrade how long each individual blade stays active, you can literally just now down waves of necromorphs even if you aren't accurately targeting the limbs. It stunlocks most enemies, as well. Very powerful. It's especially effective if multiple necros are charging in from the same door and you just pull out a single blade, killing like five of them in a bottleneck. That said, I completely agree with your point on it's alternative fire. I found it practically useless. It's too hard to hit on normal enemies (seems like a thinner version of the Linegun to me) and it isn't fast enough to hit weak points on boss fights like the Leviathan and the Hive Mind. Not F tier for sure but it definitely doesn't pull it's weight. I think the primary fire makes up for it, though.
43:00 The Ripper blade is actually pretty powerful if you know how to exploit it. The problem is that it has a weird damage proc if you hold it over the limb you to want to sever. Something prevents it from resetting. Instead you wave it up and down a necromorph to get a ton of procs.
Great video! I believe ammo you find is heavily weighted based on what weapons are in your inventory. When doing a Plasma Cutter-only run I recall finding a lot more ammo for it than other weapons.
I really loved the video and audio logs as a form of storytelling. As you say it’s great lore to add to the world, but also it leaves you with this sense of ambiguity to it, or it’s enigmatic in a way. Leaving you to keep imagining about it.
Imagine there is a game where you are on the ishimura before Isaac gets there and your job is to remove batteries, lock and block all kinds of passages, loosen and tamper with important ship parts and finally give everyone else on the ship chronic laziness and entitlement, but also all the the solutions to the problems you caused. Everything was a surprise, Easter egg hunt - like event for Isaac, but the N ecromorphs unfortunately arrived.
Hey Son Great work with the videos as always, made me download it again. With the remake a couple of months away, i hope this brings in plenty of new viewers, only having 50k subs is a travesty. Mucho Loverino BarsoDad
I skipped some of you reviews, because I want to play those games first, but I definetely will never play Dead Space. So here we go. Thanks for your content!
Great video, man. I remember playing this as a teen and having no idea what I was getting into. I just remember thinking the box art looked cool when I was at my local GameStop lol I'm so psyched for the remake!
I still remember buying dead space on release, I had randomly stumbled upon a trailer a couple days before its release, and I had never heard of dead space before watching the trailer. I was instantly captivated so I bought the game on release and its easily my favorite horror game ever.
Man, I beaten this game many time til' I got all the achievements on the 360. Recently played it again for PC. Shame there aren't any achievements on Steam. Still, game still is fun and I don't mind beating it all over again. Once again, I'm proud of you son, and I can't wait to see the rest, and I expect you to do well on the remake when it arrives, but don't be too hasty on it.
awesome review :) loved the tension this game builds up especially in the beginning until you get used to the mechanics and enemy behavior. One of my favorites for sure.
Brilliant game and a brilliant review. I bought and played Dead Space not long after it first released in the UK thanks to the guy in the gaming shop recommending it to me. He said not many people seem to know about this game but just play it. You have to play it. I remember thinking on my first play through, why isn't this the most popular game on the planet? Liked and subbed, thanks!
**GASP** How dare you disrespect Ripper-Chan. Sure she has been universally ineffective in literally EVERY boss fight in the franchise, but she more than pulls her weight in moment to moment mobbing. other than that great video son.
Dead Space is still the brightest example for learning from others (re4 specifically) but still have its own identity gaming nowadays is just about chasing trend and ripping off each others
I Love Dead space replayed it earlier this year in prep for the remake but heard it got pushed back or i might be remembering it wrong regardless its still a game that gets addictive.
Son are you psychic or something? This morning I sat down to replay this game & now I see you're doing a video about it! All jokes aside I can't wait to watch through this video.
How do you feel about the original Dead Space Dad? 🚀
It was freaking awesome; the atmosphere! The futuristic tools that Isaac used as guns and how the necromorphs looked was amazing. It was really sad to see the series ran into the ground. I’ve been into it since I was a teen
i love the original dead space game its really awesome.
This video, very well done. The game scared me plenty when it came out and I did not want to play it after an hour or so.
One of the best survival horror experiences!
Thanks Son, looking forward to hearing your thoughts in the video!
1 was my fav of the 2 I've llayed (I know it's usually 2 for most) but it put me so on edge for all it's play time I felt more fear with it, and the scarier a horror game is... Well, then it succeeded.
Although it does have its issues, sometimes it could do with a bit more breathing room or respite, and the turret shooting sections are rough as hell, but I think it overall held up well

One of my favorite games growing up, glad I gave it a chance. Back then all I would play is call of duty and didn’t think I would like it at 12 years old. Words can’t describe how happy I am to see this game remastered.
Amazing content dude. Love your calm voice and detailed explanation about the entire game. You got a new sub 🙌🏻
Son your mom and I are so proud to see your channel's continual growth. Keep up the great work. But take breaks every now and then
Thanks Dad
Interesting, I never really used The Ripper much. Will have to give it a go with all the upgrades next time.
Love the dead space duology. Wish they’d make a third.
Your videos have good research behind them and are written exceptionally well, keep it up!
Crankin these vids out, keep up the good work bro
Imagine there is a game where you are on the ishimura before Isaac gets there and your job is to remove batteries, lock and block all kinds of passages, loosen and tamper with important ship parts and finally give everyone else on the ship chronic laziness and entitlement, but also all the the solutions to the problems you caused. Everything was a surprise, Easter egg hunt - like event for Isaac, but the N ecromorphs unfortunately arrived.
Hey Son
Great work with the videos as always, made me download it again. With the remake a couple of months away, i hope this brings in plenty of new viewers, only having 50k subs is a travesty.

I skipped some of you reviews, because I want to play those games first, but I definetely will never play Dead Space. So here we go. Thanks for your content!
Greatest horror games of all time.
I remember playing Dead Space (1) as a young kid, absolutely terrifying experience. I was hooked.
One of my favorite games of all time. Excellent retrospective.
Great video, man. I remember playing this as a teen and having no idea what I was getting into. I just remember thinking the box art looked cool when I was at my local GameStop lol I'm so psyched for the remake!
My favorite horror franchise is getting a retrospective from my favorite son, nice
Son, today you can play on console all night. Im proud of you boy.
Knowing your dedication i know that this will be legendary series.
Son, it’s a great game, I love you, Dad.
A brilliant retrospective man, I love this channel
I hate the fact that when he mentioned the Wheezer enemy my brain automatically went to the buddy holly guitar riff, but this video is really amazing!
I still remember buying dead space on release, I had randomly stumbled upon a trailer a couple days before its release, and I had never heard of dead space before watching the trailer. I was instantly captivated so I bought the game on release and its easily my favorite horror game ever.
excellent video my son, love your descriptive/emotive way of explaining various aspects of the adventure, locales, & creatures ! subscribed !
Haven't heard from you for a while son, glad to hear you are doing well. Keep up the good work!
I'd love to see a retrospective on the fatal frame series
i love the original dead space game its such a great horror game.
Perfect timing, just finished the first one today.
a bright son lights up the dark world of the dead space
Man, I beaten this game many time til' I got all the achievements on the 360. Recently played it again for PC. Shame there aren't any achievements on Steam. Still, game still is fun and I don't mind beating it all over again. Once again, I'm proud of you son, and I can't wait to see the rest, and I expect you to do well on the remake when it arrives, but don't be too hasty on it.
I absolutely ate this content up. I love horror game analysis because I hate getting scared playing them 😂
That Disney racing game was a huge part of childhood lol I just popped in for Dead Space
Apparently a lot of the gore was designed using fish guts as a reference. With some actual cadavers and stuff used too
awesome review :) loved the tension this game builds up especially in the beginning until you get used to the mechanics and enemy behavior. One of my favorites for sure.
I am a simple man. I see Dead Space retrospective - I like.
Banger after banger, thank you for your hard work son. I'm letting you borrow the car this weekend, no curfew.
Hey Son,
Dad Space.
That is all.
-Love, Your Dad
Played this once on an Xbox 360 in 2009, playing the remake in 2023 and god damn I can remember some of the rooms or spawn area for enemies.
**GASP** How dare you disrespect Ripper-Chan. Sure she has been universally ineffective in literally EVERY boss fight in the franchise, but she more than pulls her weight in moment to moment mobbing. other than that great video son.
Dead Space is still the brightest example for learning from others (re4 specifically) but still have its own identity
gaming nowadays is just about chasing trend and ripping off each others
After this I'm ready for next week
Amazing Video. Just want to point out that Nicole didn't inject herself with any poison. She introduced an air embolism with an empty syringe
Dead Space and Silent Hill terrified me but also helped me get over my excessive fears and needing to sleep with a night light 😅😂
