Last time i was at Surfers, at 4am in the morning, we saw this feral hippy walking slowly up the Esplanade. He was off his chops! And he wanted a ciggie.

I lived at Southport in the early 1990's. Just 5 minutes from Surfers but a world away. I loved it there. Now 30 years later, how things have changed. Surfers has changed for the worse. Dirty and you are right about the needles. Back then the place was full of Japanese tourists, every business was catering to the Japanese. All gone now.
As someone who lives on the GC (was even born here) sounds 100% accurate. Which is why I can probably count the amount of times I've been into Surfers Paradise on my fingers, without running out of fingers 😆. And spotting fake boobs (and fake everything else) is a favourite game when going anywhere... except the west side of the M1, low chance of running into them there.

Excessively good description. We spent 2 months housesitting a million dollar property in Jan-Mar 24 here and it was an experience for sure. Everyone seems to care about looks, brands, and $$$. Half naked chiseled people sporting Maui Jims, Nike and Tiffany & Co . More Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari BMW and Mercs than Ive ever seen anywhere. I note you mentioned theme parks with a view of the slingshot which isnt in a theme park 🤣

What a farkin' joke, then went to the Light Rail Upgrade, even more of a circus. At the time was living in Cavill, in room share aka computer study with no doors for $355 a week... It's a bit more tolerable as long as you stay off the Gold Coast highway as much as possible. Once I took the backstreets to get from Broadbeach to Seaworld, got there much quicker.
It's legit. Seems like the road works have been going on for decades and making little progress since you rarely see people actually working on the sites. IMHO...

Several years ago (a few decades TBH) I worked in a mental health clinic at Miami beach. (A converted warehouse one block from the actual beach, with no windows except in the toilets and the psychiatrist's office, so no enjoying that sunshine except on lunch break or a community visit.)
And I used to describe the Gold Coast as a "mixture of glitz and sleaze".
It's only gotten worse since then...
But Coolangatta (southernmost end of the GC) is nice - different atmosphere, family friendly, and super beaches! (Not much nightlife though, if that's your thing... And not a place to get stuck during a pandemic, when the Qld Gov decides to close the border and you realise that the State border actually divides the Cooly-Tweed Heads amalgamated living space in a totally dysfunctional way.)
And at the other (northern) end, Southport is also out of the main Gold Coast vibe. (Bit of a pain to get there though - half an hour off the Motorway, and you have to join the queue at Smith Street.)

Ah yes, Sufferers Parasite and the "Gold Coast".... I took the kids and wife to that cesspool once, for a week of tacky shops, tacky theme parks and general shallow veneer of.. well anything.
Kids were asking when we were going home by the 3rd day, I told them they had to stay till the end as it was all prepaid.
Cured the ex and the brats of any pretense of fakeness forever.
Currumbin wildlife park also euthanises koalas they deem unviable. I remember a lovely koala called Nevada who was killed for being blind. There were many who would've taken Nevada in but oh no, the right thing to do was for AZWH to send him to currumbin to die. For shame.
Gonna go to Gold Coast for holiday on Aug, hope it'd be fine lol
I went to the top of the Q1 not long after it was built. In the lift was a blind woman and her seeing-eye dog. There was another adult with her which helped keep my mirth from bubbling over. All I could visualize was her swinging the dog around by its lead in a 360 above her head!

Fakest most overdeveloped area in the country I avoid it. As for a surfers paradise the main beaches arent that good, one long boring beach. Pointbreas to the south are world class but thats not really gold coast

LOL went to Gold Coast on our Honeymoon, i forget it was school holidays, couldn't find accommodation except 2 spots, one luxury villa $260 night n other base price $260 at Dream-world, wife wanted to see Polar bears so it was Dream-world LOL. What i didn't know i got see Polar bears in action before rest of public because i stay at Dream-world. By time Polar bears had finished breakfast they laid up n didn't move when public went to see them, talk about getting rip off not mention trying take photo cu#$ of crowd. After that i try navigate to Brisbane but FN roadworks on M1 i turn back cut across Ipswich went up backroad to Bundaberg which best idea as i stop at small town which had best bakery.
