  • George Foreman vs. Muhammad Ali, billed as The Rumble in the Jungle, was a heavyweight championship boxing match on October 30, 1974, at the 20th of May Stadium (now the Stade Tata Raphaël) in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), between undefeated and undisputed heavyweight champion George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. The event had an attendance of 60,000 people. Ali won by knockout in the eighth round.
    It has been called "arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century" and was a major upset, with Ali coming in as a 4-1 underdog against the unbeaten, heavy-hitting Foreman. The fight is famous for Ali's introduction of the rope-a-dope tactic.
    Some sources estimate that the fight was watched by as many as one billion television viewers around the world, becoming the world's most-watched live television broadcast at the time. This included a record estimated 50 million viewers watching the fight pay-per-view on closed-circuit theatre TV. The fight grossed an estimated $100 million (inflation-adjusted $500 million) in worldwide revenue. Decades later, the bout would be the subject of the Academy Award winning documentary film When We Were Kings

    The other thing I want to say is how calm and open Ali was with his team in the dressing area after the fight; hugs all around. Genuine smiles and eye contact. Imagine the elation and pride they had in this great man and he returned a lot of love to them. Then as soon as the lights were on and the the press conference began, there he was - Ali the showman, feeding the press with quotes and headlines. But the Ali locking eyes with Ferdie Pacheco, and in that briefest of moments acknowledging between old friends who had been through so much together - we knew this would happen - and Angelo Dundee shaking his head in wonder at Jim Brown - that’s the Ali I will never forget.

      Remember this was not the young Ali. He was deprived of 3 of his best years due to refusing to be drafted. Watch some of his fights before his being banned. He was the fastest heavyweight ever, by far. His dance combined with his incredible ability to avoid head shots enabled him to out-box, and later KO, larger opponents. The young Ali would have toyed with Foreman, or Tyson for that matter. Or even a young Joe Louis, whose speed was nowhere near Ali’s.

    I watched the full fight again this week, which I do at least once a year. Foreman looked like he was set to go in round 5, but somehow stayed on his feet. Credit to George for taking a few tremendous Ali right hands right on the button. Then in the break before round 8 Joe Frazier was asked and he said “It looks like George ain’t gonna make it”. What a great call. Then round 8 looked like a copy of round 5 with Ali fighting out of the corner in the final 30 seconds. This time he stood Foreman up with a left hook and followed with a brutal right hand that ended the fight. Afterwards Ali wanted everyone to know he was a better boxer - “I’m a pro” - and that he kept telling Foreman all through the fright - “You don’t know how to box”. What a great performance by Ali.

What knocks out top contenders and champions is getting hit with a series of punches .Punches that land back to back. But he did not take Shavers best punches. Ali’s ability to take a punch is vastly overrated. If Ali had been hit by Shavers the way Ken Norton was hit by Shavers with punch after punch after punches in consecutive order. Ali would have been knocked out too. Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) was truly one of the greatest boxing champions. In addition to such a great fighter, he was also a colorful personality with a great sense of humor. Ali boasted about many things, but humbly stated that when asked the question 'Who would have given you the toughest fight?' Ali admitted that Rocky Marciano 'would be the most trouble'. In another interview, Ali admitted that Rocky Marciano probably would have won. Ali had a great respect for Marciano..and even said 'Marciano and I were good friends' It was reported that Ali cried when he heard what happened to Marciano, who was killed in a plane crash. Ali is one of my favorite fighters in boxing history..as a fighter and a great personality! Take care

      @@jogman262 Ali did do that maybe for his own confidence builder. Inside he may have been saying, this is crazy, this is crazy. He has such good composure not letting shelf get overwhelmed by the moment. If I can say this. I've seen this fight numerous times. What the hell was wrong with Foreman??? It's like he's not right. Ali had the fast hands but then he went to the ropes, nothing magical. George was like a zombie. Not trying to take anything away from Ali he is the goat. But other than Ali I believe something else got to Big George that night.

    Yes,this was the best,greatest Boxing fight, ever ---- how a much more powerful George Foreman was eventually knocked out in 8th round by Muhammad Ali. It was Power vs Skill of Boxing Game---- all along the fight Foreman was using Power, and all along the fight, Ali was using Skillful reaction,eventually Skill knocking out the gross Power ----- and that was ineed the beauty of whole FIGHT. This fight is worth watching again and again---- SKILL over POWER.

    Ali was the ultimate defensive fighter. After being battered for 8 rounds, Ali delivered the combination that sent Foreman slowly sinking to the canvas, completely defenseless. Ali had the opportunity to deliver a killer last punch but held off, to his great credit. After this fight Foreman was a changed man, a much better man, freed from his hatred of Ali and willing to accept defeat.

    • @5star64
      @5star64 Рік тому

      Not true at all. Foreman took years to lose his hatred for Ali. After the fight Foreman complained that he was poisoned. That he was the victim of a quick count. And the legitimate complaint that the ropes were loose allowing Ali to lean his head out over the top rope and outside of the footprint of the ring and away from Foreman’s punches. He demanded an immediate rematch. But there was never going to be a rematch. Ali was to smart for that.

    • @dratz50
      @dratz50 Рік тому

      @@5star64 Here's what Angleo Dundee said about the ropes - "I thought he (Ali) was crazy with his 'rope-a-dope', lying on the ropes while George hit him. People thought we had worked on it as a tactic but no. They were saying I'd loosened the ropes to let Muhammad lean back. But I had gone round the ring tightening them and they were still loose as a goose because of the heat.". The insinuation that Ali's camp loosened the ropes has been debunked many times before.

    • @5star64
      @5star64 Рік тому

      @@dratz50 Of course Angelo Dundee was going to say that. Do you think Dundee was going to say I loosened the ropes on purpose so Ali could lean his head back outside the footprint of the ring and away from Foreman’s punches. A year later in the thrilla in Manila. The Heat was far more intense but the ropes remained tight throughout the fight. Compare the ropes from the two fights. Since when does a fighter’s trainer get to set up the ring. That should have been the job of WBA and WBC officials. The ropes were ridiculously loose. It was the heavyweight championship of the world fought in a WWE wrestling ring. Foreman was exceptional at cutting off the ring. So there were going to be times when Ali was on the ropes. The loose ropes helped Ali tremendously. That along with excessive holding and clinching wore Foreman down. Ali put his gloves behind Foreman’s neck and pulled his head down every few seconds of every round. That’s what tired Foreman out. Not the so called rope a dope. The only round where Ali laid on the ropes and stayed there was the 5th round. You can see clearly that the top rope is so loose Foreman’s head punches can’t even reach Ali’s head. I believe in a legitimate boxing ring Ali would have been knocked out by George Foreman. And that’s why Muhammad Ali never gave George Foreman a rematch.
