“You can look yourself in the mirror and know that you were, indeed, beat….by a real man.” How to insult the top two faces of the company in one line. Austin is a legend.
I love how the New York crowd booed Shawn Michaels and cheered Sid on this show. They popped when Sid came out. WHO'S THE MAN!!!! Fist bumping every fan on the way down to the ring. Another version of Taker here too! The (Bat) Pirate Taker!!!
Heels had been cheered before and at the Garden, I mean Hulk Hogan was Top babyface and worked Heel most of his WWF run lol. But never was a Heel that over overwhelmingly like SID was on this night. No matter what he did, cheers were louder than ever when Sid fucked Jose Lethario up and hit him & Shawn with the camera.
@@rustykuntz94 I loved every minute of it, especially when he hit Jose with the camera and they popped. I appreciate Shawn Michaels work but I can't stand him lol.
@@codycampbell6257 Same here Cody. Respect the mans work and he’s an all timer for sure but really was a POS as a person. As a native New Yorker, I can say as someone that was at wrestlemania 10 and 20 Michaels was not accepted by that crowd. Against razor and in the triple threat with Benoit and HHH, shawn was not the popular choice in those instances
@@danielescalera6638 I wondered also was it more the NY crowds hate towards Shawn more than a loving of SID? Especially for someone like Michaels who was such a arrogant and obnoxious Heel for so many years prior to 96.
Conrad missed the point about what upset Vince. It wasnt about ring rust, it was the line JR used that as good as Bret had been, he didnt think that either Shawn or Sid "in this ring, on this night, could have beaten Bret Hart" which prompted Vince to say "I totally disagree with that". Something upset Vince about THAT line. Maybe he didn't the picture painted that a guy just coming back was that much better than the two guys he had going on last. Maybe he didn't want the idea pushed that the WWF champ wasnt clearly the best until he loses it. Or maybe it was just because it was Shawn. Draw your own conclusion.

By literally 0 metrics. Drawing? Not top 20 In-ring? Top 5 Promo? Not top 50 Charisma? Not top 30 Accolades? Not top 10 Kurt Angle is literally just a better Bret, with the amateur pedigree to back it up.
I was a huge fan of Sid !! He was a super sized monster ! He seemed like a natural Heel just the look of his face said “badass” and no “nice guy” look to him. Such a Beast tho I hated to see his career end up shortened by injury.
Interesting enough. This was the first Wrestling VHS tape I rented from a Video store. It was a few years removed. At this point I had no idea Rocky Mavia was The Rock until I saw this show. As i was still new to watching wrestling.
That Austin/Bret match didn’t have the heat and drama of the Mania match but as a wrestling, JCP-style match, it was flawless - easily as good as Bret/Perfect at Summerslam 91 IMO. This was probably Austin’s last great technical performance before his series with Benoit 5 years later and at this point, he wasn’t covering up that he was an excellent technical wrestler - maybe the best in WWE after Bret and Owen
I didn't even know that match existed until 2017. I have almost all of Austin's DVD collections and found out that year that it's in his "Legacy of Stone Cold Steve Austin" DVD. And I still haven't seen it. Doesn't interest me. No build up, no reason to fight, they just throw Austin at Bret for no reason. Reminds me of AEW. Miracle the fued caught fire.
@@lalomontoyajr.9282 It's two of the best workers in WWE going at it and Bret's big comeback match - he requested to work with Austin. No, there's no real buildup, just a personality clash but sometimes that's all that's needed.
Speak for yourself Conrad, I like the long hall of fame. I like to hear everything the inductees have to say and all the people they want to thank. It’s sad now though how many guys have passed these last 15 years since they started televising it. 2006-2007 were the two best imo.
I was only 5 at the time and watched it on ppv here in Ireland... It was my first experience of a heel getting a babyface reaction and it opened my eyes to the fucking aura that madison square garden possessed! You guys were rabid, thank you!
Well they did (sort of) At the April PPV, they had their 3rd one on one PPV match, which was at In Your House: Revenge of The Taker. They would face off one last time at the July PPV, which was a 10 man tag match at In Your House: Canadian Stampede.
@@michaelgcuk had Bret stayed with the company, they would’ve had more matches. Bret would’ve put the title on Austin as well. I think In an interview, Bret wanted to put the title on Austin instead of Shawn Michael’s at the survivor series. Talk about a “what if”

Candido wasn't over and basically a lower mid carder. Yeah he was a great wrestler, but to the casual or average fan he didn't mean much and he was too small. Back in 95 being that small was a detriment.
@@justinmartin1831 I never watched wrestling and was like aww man this Bret Hart guy, this Shawn Michaels guy, ya they’re doing backflips and throwing themselves out of the ring and selling like Ricky Morton but man if only they were 6’7 with steroid bodies and tripped over their own baby Bambi legs, then and only then would they really be believable. There goes Conrad blowing Shawn again. Has 2nd best match on the card, crowd is cheering Sid. There's Conrad "o Shawn best in this era". What a load of nonsense lol. Then he talks about how people are babies about dropping the belt (exact same things Shawn did previously with Shane Douglas).
The crowd interaction when Sid won the title says it all. Look at all of the people Sid interacted with when he won and the crowds reaction in general. MSG on this night belonged to Sid. No question about it.
I'm calling bullshit Prichard. I normally agree with Bruce but saying Vader couldn't get the same pop as Sid is crazy. The fans were more anti Shawn then they were pro Sid. Personally I was so sick of Michaels by that time.
Vader had better reactions in 1997 when he was on a losing streak but they were never as big as Sid's reactions in 1996. Vader's best work was as a monster heel - not as a baby face. Go back to Sid's first WWF run. His crowd reactions there were louder than Vader's babyface reactions in 1997. Sid was over with the WWF crowd. Vader was not. Prichard is correct. Even with the right push, Vader wasn't going to get Sid's reactions in 1996 or 1997.
That Austin promo on Bret is pure classic.
