Wow, this hits me in the feels...Strider and Forgotten Worlds was/is such an incredible arcade port to the Genesis, especially Strider (8 Mega Memory!). You had to be alive then to truly understand how magical and what it was like to get such a faithful arcade port and experience at home, in terms of graphics and gameplay. Prior to the Genesis, when most arcade games were ported to the NES, the gameplay and graphics were completely different than what you played at the arcades.
Genesis Forgotten Worlds is missing the level before the final stage where you fight those twin giants guarding the tower entrance. The Turbo Duo version however has all 8 stages but missing the co op feature.
What I’m loving is how since Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Arcade Classics has dropped, we see a major interest in The Punisher resurgence. To be honest, I don’t even remember seeing the Genesis port of this game, but now I am intrigued! I’d love to see how this fairs on the old Mega Drive.
Are you aware some South American developers group, is currently porting Street Fighter WITH ARCADE SPRITES to the Mega Deive/Genesis? They named it Street Fighter Omega and it looks incredible!
With the obvious handicaps of color, and cart memory size, the Genesis still did an amazing job of bringing some of these arcade titles home. In most cases the crisp gameplay is intact even if the graphics (and sound) are a bit compromised. In many of the ports (even 8 megabit Strider) you can see the storage limits show up in the smaller graphics tiles with less variety, compare to the Sega CD Final Fight port which seems to maintain the graphic tile variety and mirrors the arcade closely.
Thank you very much :) It should be said that, as far as I know, both Street Fighter II/Super and Slam Masters use the resolution of those same games on SNES, because Capcom previously ported it to the Nintendo console and from there converted it to Genesis. In theory both could have a higher resolution.
I had a blast back in the day when my friend borrowed me SF2 on Genesis, my mom saw me too happy that she not even limited my screen time on that weekend, good times! Great video, I think is a good idea to have the sound of one system at the time and something on screen indicating wich one is playing, I don't know if this would result in too much work tho
Fun fact: Forgotten Worlds used a rotary joystick for the arcade original (like you'd find on cabs like Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and Midnight Resistance).
Actually, the Rolling Switch is a vastly different piece of equipment compared to the Loop Lever. It’s a spinner that’s mounted on a button, not the joystick.
Before SFII all games were programmed/ported properly by SEGA for the Genesis, as Capcom signed an exclusive contract with Nintendo. So specially those ports reflect the talent of SEGA's programmers for reproducing the arcade games and bring them home. Great work by SEGA
@@ConsoleCombat Don’t worry mate, it’s a great video nonetheless. Sega did some great work when porting CPS games. Games such as Forgotten Worlds would have been even more impressive on larger ROM sizes.
For what the Genesis was back then, the ports were very good. It is interesting to see what some of the home brew Genesis ports are looking, sounding and playing like. Ghouls-N-Ghosts is looking like the Arcade version but with a limited color pallet. Imagine if the Genesis developers back then, had today's knowledge and tools. Still, this was an enjoyable look back.
Most of the Capcom to Genesis ports are great. Mercs is one of the best. Not only do you get the arcade game, but also a good extra mission with a few RPG elements.
Boss: What's this? Developer: A perfect blue, 0000FF. Boss. Nice. Change it. And that full green and yellow, change them both and lower the brightness. That forgotten worlds background, quick mirror flip it for no reason in order to be different. Developer: Why not keep it originals? Aren't we supposed to bring arcade experience at home? Boss: Because they will be played in home televisions instead of arcade cabinets (?) and don't forget that gui, switch xy positions everything in gui
If you search 'ghouls n ghosts genesis hack' a guy called aMaru has redone the 1st 2 levels of Ghouls'n Ghosts and it looks damn near identical to the arcade. Some of the issues with genesis conversions were economics based on the cost so we got some stripped down graphics in many places, but aMaru's remake proves many of these games could've looked much closer to the originals. Many of the early ones that is. Later ones like Street Fighter I think they didn't skimp on cartridge capacity as much so at that point it became more of a color limitation.
Some ports were spot on, most were just ok and others horrible. We can say that Capcom ports to the Mega Drive were, overall, better than most other companies, specially SEGA's own ports. We can't expect 1:1 on that gen... that only happened on the Dreamcast (the first console that not only got 1:1 on most arcade ports AND the first to even deliver some better versions of current games, as with Soul Calibur). PS: Not considering the NEO GEO for obvious reasons... but could be interesting to see some CPS ports to the SNK console
The Sega genesis was the one that brought the arcade home but in its own style not everything was copied the same but it could have been the technology we had and the programmers didn't think the genesis could pull off graphics like the arcade which it could they just didn't want to spend all there time starting from scratch
@@iulianispas8634I had the world warrior, hyper fighting and Super versions of SF2 on the SNES and none of them were glitchy. Any slowdown followed the arcade original as well.
Mega drive estaba muy limitada por el tamaño de los cartuchos, a día de hoy se podrían mejorar todos estos juegos. Especial mente el The Punisher una conversión mediocre y con un uso del color malísimo.
Really nice video. And in the punisher it was nice to see Nick fury as he really is. Caucasian. I personally can't stand how all the super heroes from my childhood change race. F Disney/marvel for that. Not even trying to be racist, there were lots of different representations of race in comics already, and there's nothing wrong with creating new heroes who are different races. Plus I just personally HATE samuel l wackson anyway. Its like hes constantly just trying to hard in every role he's in. Lol. Sorry for the tangent😂. Great job on the video!
Genesis brought the Arcade experience HOME! All these ports turned out Good-to-Great.
The mega expensive Neo-geo would have been nice to own back in the day

Street Fighter 2: SFC (Genesis) was my introduction to Blanka.
Thank gwad this happened ❤. Can't wait for future fan project Street Fighter Alpha and Darkstalkers on the *Genesis/MD*
It is amazing how the Street Fighter II games looked so amazing on the 16-Bit systems of the time. What a trip down memory lane!
Very nice video. Keep working in this way.
Thank you, I will!

That is not a port but a remake as they are changing a lot of stuff in the gameplay... what makes SFO even better
They stopped in solidarity, because some retrogaming scumbag tried to sell REAL BOUT FATAL FURY GENESIS, and their devs are tight close to SSF2O.
Genesis Ghouls and Ghosts blew my mind in 1989!

Cool video man
Glad you enjoyed it
Mercs proved that Genesis could handle Final Fight, especially in the soundtrack department.
Superb comparison video. I think you’ve missed Chiki Chiki Boys aka Mega Twins though?

Would have been nice to leave the audio by segments instead of one channel per game. It does get messy 🫠 great comparison tho
Thank you for the feedback.
Well, the Mega Drive/Genesis is a very stripped down Sega System 16 arcade board essentially. And the System 16 and CPS-1 are similar in some ways.
Way better the sf2 snes a glichy mess with slow down
