@@GreyMatterShades Thanks so much for the kind words matey. Excited to share more throughout the year. I always wanted more horror games on the megadrive so I thought I'd give it a go! :)
I was really impressed by the work you have done so far and the console doesn't really have many other games like it, so I think it's one many will be looking forward to!
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials Thanks matey! I’m excited to start bringing all the various systems together. Excited to show more in the coming months.
It's an amazing console, I've been mildly collecting for it ever since I got it, I now have 76 games for it and an everdrive! I'm considering to get at least a couple new games for it they're often rare and interesting pieces of software. It's also very well fitting for my setup as the converter works very well and I got wireless controllers so I can comfortably sit in the couch and play with a friend 👍
The SNES is also receiving fan games, but not as many because it seems it's not as easy to program SNES's games than the Genesis ones (something related to the development kit).
Congratulations on three successful years, Pigsy Retro. Keep up the excellent work, Gibsy; your efforts are truly commendable. i wanna learn more about your videos and lessons.
Lots of promising stuff to look forward to this year. I've been thinking lately that with all these demos and projects, it would be cool if someone put together a sort of "Demo Disk" for the Genesis like the PS1 had. It'd be especially cool if it functioned like those PS1 demo disks with menus to launch games and that 90's style presentation. Obviously it'd be prohibitively expensive to produce and distribute carts, but it could work as a digital download, or (for a fee) even an SD card for people's flash carts, or a CD for their Sega CDs. I miss demo disks, and would love to see them make some sort of comeback. Best of luck with all your projects in the new year, Pigsy! I'm hoping this is the year I actually start making something on the Genesis.
Yeah, I've thought of that idea before. For the Saturn or Mega CD you really could just produce an actual disc, which would be nice. Just go for it, getting started is the most difficult step!
Thank you very much for all your work, videos and demos. I'm still learning SGDK and your videos have been invaluable. I've learned A LOT from them. I hope you have a great 2025. And, once again, thanks.
50 - legend of Leyria I have now completed 7 years of development and will release this game in 2025! Nobody ever mentions my game xD Although I confess that I post few updates. Happy New Year!

Great video. It's crazy how active the homebrew scene is on the Megadrive at the moment (and how good the quality is of some of the arcade ports - stuff I'd have paid top dollar for back in the day, like Final Fight, Shinobi and R-Type *cough* which I also just so happen to be a playtester for *cough*) Some of the new original stuff looks amazing too, I'm particularly interested in that Yuzo Koshiro shoot-em-up Earthion, which is pulling off some amazing visual effects. Interested in this GG Shinobi remake you mentioned, I've been hoping someone would do that!
Oh man idk when you made this video but there is a Sonic robo blast 2 port for the 32x that came out around christmas and its really fucking impressive
It's crazy how many Sega heads with yt channels have just ignored SRB2 32X on their list. even if it's only the add-on, it counts more than half the abandoned projects on the list.
I moved into a new apartment recently. My things will arrive from my previous apartment in a month. My sanity was tested without my RYZEN 5500+RX 6600 gaming pc. But when I was using my very old dual core AMD laptop, I decided to install retroarch on it to see if it will run atleast the 16-bit systems. My sanity was restored when I saw megadrive games running without a hiccup. Now I am making my way through ZOOL.
Some of these look absolutely wild. Especially excited for the ones that aren't shmups or platformers - not that these don't always look great but as genres they're so thoroughly explored that it's basically a case of how far the hardware can be pushed at this point. But Super BPM and Space Hunter also look like incredible homages.
I don't know how is going on, but MXRetroDev is also working on a official port of QUByte's 99 Vidas beat'em up for the Mega Drive (it was announced back in 2023), hope we see some news of the project this year.
Amazing stuff. Genesis/MD has just been rolling, year after year and seems to b really cooking now. Incredibly awesome scene w amazing devs. If I ever learn to code I'd try to do a lightgun game, seems like a genre that often gets ignored in the homebrew scene unfortunately. Would b cool to do a branching path light gun RPG hybrid type of a deal. The Menacer could really use some more games. Or the Justifier. Or both. Would love to see a light gun game on the 32XCD w great art and graphical effects.
Well I do consider MD-SONIC a finished product (as a tech demo), I may release an update to it someday adding a soundtrack and improving the lock-on feature. Maybe I'll convert the final game? Well, for now, I've been working on more smaller projects.
My impression of MD homebrew from this video is that - with little exceptions - when the games aren't literal ports of other games, they are extremely strict, obvious, lovingly-inspired clones. That's not really a knock on the effort being made here, because, TBH, it's a healthy, respectful engagement with retro to remake everything and port everything. It's just jarring to see a project lineup that is "A Super Metroid clone, a Snatcher clone, a G'N'G clone, a SoR clone, a Loom clone, a Super C clone..."
Love this and I’ve picked up Genesis to start writing code. Former Atari STe developer and want to write retro games. One thing I found with looking for tools is a massive learning curve and extreme difficulty setting up something remotely manageable with modern machines. For the Genesis/Megadrive devs here, where can I pick up the tools for building in c and creative auth tools to get started? Any help is very appreciated.
I think I had looked that up! I’ll grab and go. I have an EverDrive Pro cart and my dream is to write some Sega CD games (non av but use the enhanced cpu and sound.)

I featured it i last year's video, but not much news of it since then. It already looks very solid so I can't imagine that it's too far from completion now, but who knows!
I found a 2016 UA-cam video of Gradius II on the Sega MD. It was being programmed by Nendo who also did a caravan shmup called Omega Blast, but there have been no updates for several years. @MCBRemakes also recreated the Gradius III title screen for Genesis a few months ago.
@@yousefslimani99 Unfortunately no, he just did a demake of the title screen to match the Genesis' palette which he exported to a Genesis ROM. I think he did it as an artistic exercise.
Excellent updates on current gaming development for our beloved Mega Drive! I know you covered most of them but I was wondering if you have any news regarding the port of Date East's RoboCop arcade game?
A TMNT game Turtles in Time/Shredders Revenge enhanced using Hyperstone Heist which is like more than 80% of Turtles in Times. The music and sounds are already perfect on Hyperstone Heist. Just add the missing stages from Turtles in Time and add some elements from Shredders Revenge. 😁
What is the estimated size of the Castlevania Symphony of the Night ROM? I have an Everdrive Krikkz x3, but it doesn't run a ROM larger than 5 mg. Hugs from Brazil. Happy New Year.
Grato Pigsy!
You are super correct! Glad that was coming through. The brief for the composer was a lot of John Carpenter, and It Follows sound track. Edit - the comment is in regards to The bagman reference
It's fantastic to see developed games, more like I would like someone redeveloped DJ Boy on the Genesis, to look more like the arcade to give DJ more moves and animation and more lives and continued.
How is it even possible that random guys on the internet can handle the mega drive better than official employed programmers back then??? do these demos really run on mega drive hardware??? Impressive!
@@jc_dogen also all prior knowledge available, while devs of the past had nothing to reference and had to figure everything out for the first time, in a very tight timeline.
The Genesis doesn't have Scaler hardware... But the Sega CD does! Why not make that racing game for the Sega CD then instead?? I would LOOOOVE to see some Homebrew ports of Sega Super Scaler Arcade titles for the Sega CD!! We should have gotten them from Sega in the first place!
Any devs out there... Anaël Seghezzi's raycasting for Phantasy Star II, III and IV dungeons! The 2D dungeons were one of the main reasons I didn't buy PSII back in the day, just seemed like a downgrade from the 8 bit PSI 3D.
Awesome stuff coming to the Genesis created by awesome people, here are the games I'm looking forward to playing. Final Fight MD Mega Castlevania IV Shinobi Batman Returns MD Mega R-Type Splatterhouse MD Castlevania Rondo of Blood MD Sonic Mega Man The Sequel Wars (Episode Blue) And Happy New Year!
I love these - I wish it were as easy to develop for the SNES as those new games do look great as well but they are few and far between compared to new Gen/MD games.
A part of me would like you to do the John Wick game in 3d isometric, like that Core Desing skeleton game, or the GBA port of Max Payne. Mainly as a good challenge
Would be nice a Marvel Vs Capcom 2.5 with sprites from existing games. Like a Mugen like games with characters from SFII, Capcom, even DC and MK. But a pure Marvel vs Capcom game would be enough. With extra characters from SF, Dark stalker and Capcom. 😁
If we finish almost half of those, it will be a better year than some of the megadrive life ones. Fans do what SEGA don't hahaha its funny to see what can be done with money and short delivery and schedule times and without of them....
It seems like Rondo of Blood is the PC Engine port. I think the Super Nintendo version will be better graphically in select areas, namely parallax scrolling... wondering why PCE was chosen for graphics.
The transparancy effect. I always knew sega genesis could do this. The coloured transparancy effect also was seen in warsong 2 and i believe shining force. It's seen earlyer. Are it true tranparancys or a clever effect, for sure a clever effect. One thing i do knew the genesis could work wonders. Esspecially now when there are more resources. I'm amazed seeing games also colour wise even coming closer towards snes. Back in the day the sometimes even knew to mitigate this problem by using them creative. Treasure comes to mind. i never got why pc engine could display more colours then the genesis while having near similair hardware. same pallet.
@ really strange. They both have the total pallet of 512. I think they'll find a trick to get more then 64 out of the genesis. The 64 colour limit kinda hurt it. On all other technical fronts aside colour it is better then the pc engine. Pc engine is a very cool console tough. Segas genesis dit allot with just 40 colours on screen most of the time. I always imagen a few colours more. never liked the dither paterns and such to compensate for more colours through composh...t. It didn't persay made games look better. Blurrier yes.
@@ArjanSnijder There are pretty standard tricks like updating palettes part way down the screen, and using shadow and highlight. Luftoheit does a lot of the former, and some of the latter. Another one is writing directly to color ram while the screen is being drawn. That's the famous 512 color "blast processing" trick but it's not very practical in a game because it keeps the cpu too busy. >On all other technical fronts aside colour it is better then the pc engine not quite true. ;) it has a few other strengths
@ Processor speed it is better, frames, paralax, sprites on screen. 80% aside from colour. And with the hudson ports you really noticed even on sega cd. Lords of thunder for instance looks kinda ass on sega cd. Colour wise pc engine games tend to look more like snes games. If you factor in the better looking ones. Saphire for instance. That game almost looks 32bit. There are still allot of cool tricks the genesis did or does. Sonic 2 aquatic ruins is still a sight to behold, thunder force 4 paralax scrolling. Shinobi 3. The treasure games. Treasure really knew what they where doing with the genesis. Magical developer treasure. i mis them. luftheit looks awesome/promising. Als paprium looked awesome, never got my copy from that sc...mbag fonzie.
@@ArjanSnijder well, it's a bit easier and faster to play samples on pc engine. and you can update video ram more freely while the screen is drawing. that makes some things easier. there are also planar graphics tricks you can do. i'm not saying it's a better system. they all have cool things you can do. but the genesis was probably pushed a bit more then the base pc engine if you're looking at commercial software. and the current scene is a lot bigger too.
If you search youtube for "Felipe Matias" and "zelda" you will find the beginnings of a lttp port. I thought it a little too early to show everyone, so left it out of the video
With AI doing so much I assume AI will help make your job easier? Some games are decently better than the original. I would have been more excited 10 years ago but now so many things in life that its not as excusing which is kind of sad the excitement is gone.

@@yousefslimani99 Unfortunately no, he just did a demake of the title screen to match the Genesis' palette which he exported to a Genesis ROM. I think he did it as an artistic exercise.
@ welp, still waiting tho
Excellent updates on current gaming development for our beloved Mega Drive! I know you covered most of them but I was wondering if you have any news regarding the port of Date East's RoboCop arcade game?
A TMNT game Turtles in Time/Shredders Revenge enhanced using Hyperstone Heist which is like more than 80% of Turtles in Times. The music and sounds are already perfect on Hyperstone Heist. Just add the missing stages from Turtles in Time and add some elements from Shredders Revenge. 😁
GENESIS DOES!
What is the estimated size of the Castlevania Symphony of the Night ROM? I have an Everdrive Krikkz x3, but it doesn't run a ROM larger than 5 mg. Hugs from Brazil. Happy New Year.

Lufthoheit 😮
I'd love to see a port of Zeliard to the Genesis/Mega Drive!
A música deste jogo (02:25) foi "inspirada" na música tema de The Thing (1982).
Vigilante lembra Kung Fu Master (arcade)
Alguns fogos usam cores bem diferentes :D
Eu não vejo importância em usar 60fps...
Os jogos são muito interessantes. Tomara que finalizem.
Grato Pigsy!
You're welcome and thanks for the extra info
You are super correct! Glad that was coming through. The brief for the composer was a lot of John Carpenter, and It Follows sound track.
Edit - the comment is in regards to The bagman reference
It's fantastic to see developed games, more like I would like someone redeveloped DJ Boy on the Genesis, to look more like the arcade to give DJ more moves and animation and more lives and continued.
I hope fans make a sequel to gunstar heroes
A spiritual successor to to Gunstar would be epic!
How is it even possible that random guys on the internet can handle the mega drive better than official employed programmers back then??? do these demos really run on mega drive hardware??? Impressive!
better tools, bigger cartridges and no deadlines.
@@jc_dogen also all prior knowledge available, while devs of the past had nothing to reference and had to figure everything out for the first time, in a very tight timeline.
16:09 what's that say?
"Sorry we can't help you in this game"
Will any of these will have physical releases?
I’m aiming for a physical release for “The bagman”.
Lufthohiet will get a physical release . Earthion, ZPF &. Crito will also. Those i know off the top of my head , could be others.
Secret of the four winds looks like gaming perfection
The Genesis doesn't have Scaler hardware... But the Sega CD does! Why not make that racing game for the Sega CD then instead??
I would LOOOOVE to see some Homebrew ports of Sega Super Scaler Arcade titles for the Sega CD!! We should have gotten them from Sega in the first place!
The point is challenging what usually could not be done
Any devs out there... Anaël Seghezzi's raycasting for Phantasy Star II, III and IV dungeons!
The 2D dungeons were one of the main reasons I didn't buy PSII back in the day, just seemed like a downgrade from the 8 bit PSI 3D.
This is awesome!
Happy new year pigsy hope you’ll have a great day and a great year
You too!
Id love to see a port of the original Chase Hq for the Mega drive
I wish there was a website that carried all the post genesis games for sale
Did resident Evil and street fighter alpha disappear
Nice almost Brazilian developers, thats soo cool
Awesome stuff coming to the Genesis created by awesome people, here are the games I'm looking forward to playing.
Final Fight MD
Mega Castlevania IV
Shinobi
Batman Returns MD
Mega R-Type
Splatterhouse MD
Castlevania Rondo of Blood
MD Sonic
Mega Man The Sequel Wars (Episode Blue)
And Happy New Year!
For batman returns they could have at least changed the color of the batman sprite for player 2...
I love these - I wish it were as easy to develop for the SNES as those new games do look great as well but they are few and far between compared to new Gen/MD games.
someone made a genesis SDK thats why you see alot of new games.
Stuff like this puts into perspective how pointless the 32X was.
A part of me would like you to do the John Wick game in 3d isometric, like that Core Desing skeleton game, or the GBA port of Max Payne. Mainly as a good challenge
Please finish Batman Returns MD!!!
Where do you buy all these new games? I want physical, not ROMs
If we finish almost half of those, it will be a better year than some of the megadrive life ones. Fans do what SEGA don't hahaha
its funny to see what can be done with money and short delivery and schedule times and without of them....
It seems like Rondo of Blood is the PC Engine port. I think the Super Nintendo version will be better graphically in select areas, namely parallax scrolling... wondering why PCE was chosen for graphics.
probably to make it consistent, since they're porting the pce game.
Genesis/MD really lacks a great Racing game like a demake of Gran Turismo or a Mario Kart competition.
PC engine lets you use up to 32 palettes at once. Genesis, only 4, which makes color management trickier.
>On all other technical fronts aside colour it is better then the pc engine
not quite true. ;) it has a few other strengths
I wish someone could remake Narc and make less enemies in it.
A full Zelda ALTTP port on the Genesis please! 😁
If you search youtube for "Felipe Matias" and "zelda" you will find the beginnings of a lttp port. I thought it a little too early to show everyone, so left it out of the video
incredible stuff :)
Back in the day ram and cartridge size was expensive! Now there cheaper! So you could have a half gigabit cart game! Like Neo geo!
A MAIORIA NÃO SAI...ESSES CARAS COMEÇAM A FAZER E NÃO TERMINAM FICA SÓ NA ILUSÃO !!!
With AI doing so much I assume AI will help make your job easier?
Some games are decently better than the original.
I would have been more excited 10 years ago but now so many things in life that its not as excusing which is kind of sad the excitement is gone.
