Going from N64 and or PSone to Dreamcast was seriously mind blowing. Arcade perfect sprites and polys, Sega net, cel shading, enhanced ports, legit 3d Sonic...1999 was on hell of a time to be alive.
I still fondly remember the first time I turned on my Dreamcast back in 1999 and was completely blown away by the graphics, the controller and general interface. Such a great time to be a gamer😃
Yeah the graphics were godly, interface was nice and clean (still think dc has the all time greatest boot up screen) but damn that controller was awful. Terrible d pad, rock hard face buttons and no built in rumble. Triggers and analog stuck were decent but it really let the whole package down imo
@@eponymous7910 The lack of rumble i can let slide because at least you could install a rumble pack (which made it cool imo) What i can't forgive is making such a fansatically comfortable controller, and only giving it one analogue stick. Wtf were they thinking? Even PS1 had 2 analogue sticks. Apart from that, the Dreamcast gave some of the best gaming memories of my life. I miss it dearly :(
The Dreamcast is the perfectly named console because the whole experience was so uniquely Dreamcast and SEGA, so ahead if time we still feel the effect of how amazing the graphics are. There was so much magic about the Dreamcast.
"Never slowing down no matter what's on the screen" *brutally drops to 3fps after the explosion* Nice video!! To me Jet Set Radio's visuals are second to none. It has aged the best of them all.
I'm pretty sure that slowdown is due to the emulator he's using/hardware he's running it on vs. a deficiency in the original hardware. I noticed sound sound crackles etc. throughout this video.
@@yellowblanka6058 yeah sure, it's an emulator all the way bc what he says is actually true on real hardware, I just found the timing of the script with the major slowdown hilarious 😅
Ikaruga had slowdown on the DC during the screen filling explosions but nothing as bad as shown in the video. Interestingly (or not) the whole game is only 22megabytes
Soulcalibur will always be the Dreamcast GOAT game for me. I remember playing it on a DC kiosk at Toys-R-Us and saying 'I MUST HAVE THIS' then I bought it.
100%, I feel it could have easily had a few more years of great games. It’s a shame SEGA couldn’t find a way to support it like Nintendo did the N64, the N64 was profitable only selling around 30m units.
They didnt have many great games for the north American market like the Japanese market. Japan had tons of great and fun games while the North American market didnt get shyt. Dreamcast also lived past 2003 in japan lol
The DC was way ahead of its time. In many ways it ruined the rest of the 6th gen because the games I was playing in 99 were so good. It took a while for the PS2 released in 2001 to catch uo
@@thegamelounge659 Dreamcast launched in Japan 1998 during prime time of N64 and PS1 which is insane. Modern consoles are basically upgraded Dreamcast's. In 1998 there were also the insane 3DFX Voodoo 2 card for PC that almost made Dreamcast look bad. lol
It never did get any better we just got obsessed with more and more useless details and more and more hardware rather than efficient use of already hardware
The Dreamcast launched on my birthday in 1999 so i had to get one. I was a Nintendo kid, and the Dreamcast was my first Sega console. NBA and NFL 2k, Airforce Delta, Ready to Rumble boxing, crazy taxi, RE Code Veronica, Soul Caliber, Sega GT, sega bass fishing with the rod ,and the list goes on. So many fond memories, one of the best console ever
Looking at these graphics now and remembering being a teenager and my jaw dropping at what the Dreamcast was then capable of makes me feel incredibly old.
@@thegamelounge659 I remember the "9.9.99" cover of "Electronic Gaming Monthly". In the end neither myself nor friends ever actually owned a Dreamcast, but I would go on to own an X-Box, Gamecube, and later a PS2. I do have vague memories of playing Dreamcast games in store displays. My metric for 3D graphics at the time was my N64 and our Pentium II/3DFX Voodoo Banshee equipped PC so seeing what the Dreamcast was capable of outputting shocked me.
Totally agree, the Dreamcast was such a huge jump. It really set the standard. I always say in many ways it spoiled a lot of the 6th Gen because Shenmue, MSR & Co set the bar so high
Le Mans is 60fps btw. I remember playing it on a tiny 19" tv and it was as smooth as butter. Phantasy Star Online v.2 was my first EVER gaming experience online. I cherish the memories that game gave me. Especially the girl running away from me when i asked her what 'lol' meant :p Great times man.
On the mere visual aspect, I agree. Shenmue's beauty lies in the landscape details, the skin, the light of day and so much more. Street Fighter III - Third Strike has a beauty of its own. Giga Wing 2 also.
Yeah, there really were so many stunning DC games the more I think about it. Some have pointed out Daytona, Tokyo Highway 2. GigaWing 2 and SFIII are also great looking games
Phantasy Star Online is definitely massively underappreciated for its graphics. I would even go as far as to say that it is one of the most gorgeous games on the Dreamcast. When people showcase the game its ALWAYS the first forest level, and honestly, it looks quite dated by today's standards. But once you reach the later levels, the beautiful effects, world detail and artstyle cohesion is just unlike anything you saw in games from that era, most of it actually holds up to this day... I'm thinking of the the lava effect in the cave1, it looks awesome. The water caustics and alien wild life/fauna in cave2 also look superb. not to mention the beautiful looking reflections and animated textures in the high tech "mines". Unlike other games that often just pulled textures from texture-CDs. PSO was very much a more hand crafted experience, with a lot of time and effort spent in the art department.
You are 100% right here, like you say to pull footage it’s just easy to start a new game and reach the first boss. Which by itself is pretty spectacular but the game keeps getting better and better as you go through it. Stunning game!
I bought the Japanese release of the Dreamcast at an import store in Chinatown when it was released because I couldn't wait to play it. I was blown away at the visuals at the time, especially the framerates because there was nothing like it in terms of 3d graphics.
I still Love the Dreamcast all these years later and still play it on a regular basis, probably just as much as any other console. So much fun and memories with DC.
It really was an arcade at home given the huge number of arcade conversions. There are so many games that are so easy to just pick up and play even today.
Great Video....still we shouldnt forget about Tokyo Highway Challenge 2...for me the Car Models look much better here than for example in MSR....especially when it comes to light relfections etc. which in MSR unfortunately are left out completely
My Favourite: 1) Soul Calibur - The best version was on the Dreamcast: 2) Metropolis Street Racer - One of the finest Racers ever that defined what a racing game should be. "It's not about how fast you drive, but about how you drive fast": 3) Shenmue 1 and 2 - Just Simply Awesome: 4) Ready 2 Rumble - A highly playable and incredibly fun game to play: 5) Virua Tennis - Perhaps one of the best tennis games ever made: 6) F355 Ferrari Challenge - One of the purest racers to ever grace a video games console. Yes, it was hard, but it matured into a fine racer with experience and practice.
Thanks for the reply, I think Ready 2 Rumble in particular doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Ok it may not have the most depth but as you say it’s a huge amount of fun. Especially in multiplayer
Great list, man. I'm so glad to see your inclusion of Ikaruga. For me, most of the shmups on the DC looked amazing. Titles like Border Down, Zero Gunner 2, Mars Matrix and Under Defeat are graphically gorgeous!
Absolutely! For as manic and bullet-hell fast-paced the gameplay is, the visuals are easy on the eyes. Especially if you go into the settings and adjust the screen dimensions for smoother scaling, which I highly recommend. I might be in the minority here, but I've also aways thought Giga Wing 2 was a beautiful looking shmup.
Do I just wear rose tinted glasses, or did games had more variety and creativity wih the past console generations? I mean, just look at the dreamcast games. So different and interesting. And what they tried to achieve with much weaker hardware vs today. Not only graphicaly, but gameplay wise. New games frome the big gaming companies are not bad... but stale. Just following the expected formula for a profitable game. Rarely trying to take any risks, to make something new and creative. Or isn't pioneering new gameplay ideas necessary anymore?
No you are 100% correct, the issue is that development costs mean that risks are too high. Not only that but recurring revenue in games is far more lucrative. So a perfectly formed 15 hour campaign or even racing game just doesn’t make the cut. If a standalone game sells. Another less obvious ideas I have is that there is almost too much choice now. When everything went through standardised platforms and hardware there were less choices to make and a lot of the filtering in games was done for you. Now there are literally thousands of games launching all the time. People tend to simply gravitate to what they know. I guess liken it to Netflix, sometimes so much to choose from you spend too much time browsing 😂
Yes, the product was bordering on perfect. They did everything they needed to do (aside from a DVD Player) but a mix of the failure of the Saturn and success of Sony PS1 meant there wasn’t a lot SEGA could do
Thanks for the comment. Yes Headhunter seems to be getting a lot of love in the comments. It really was a great game. Although Jack was a terrible shot 😂
Yep, ironically it was SEGA who hyped up the whole “Bits” thing with the mega drive/genesis. I’m surprised SONY didn’t jump on it more. I saw a few headlines with “The first ‘true’ 128-bit system. But nothjng more
@@thegamelounge659 yeah, they were scared that folks couldn’t understand why newer consoles were more powerful. So they used the “Bit” craze of the early to mid 1990s as a measuring bar.
I can’t believe it’s been 25 YEARS since the Dreamcast was released! 😮 So many great memories playing this all day long with my family as a kid 😩🙌 Damn, I really miss the good ol’ days 😢❤
everyone always misses on speed devils racing game def a hidden gem looks fantastic and has cool hazards to watch out for one of my favs on the dreamcast
I discovered Metropolis Street Racer last year. It truly is a special game no matter what angle you look at it from. Some of those Tokyo and San Francisco track layouts are breathtaking. I only wish they were as generous with the difficulty as they were with the love that went into the environments. Not only is MSR hard from the start, it's also possible to lose progress when you have to gamble your Kudos to grind to the next level. There's still hundreds of track layouts that I haven't seen.
I always remember having no issue with progression in the game back in the day. I really need to properly replay the game and try and make some progress. There were famously a few bugs in the PAL version which helped me out. If you reached the points goal before penalties it would still allow you to progress even if the points were reduced below the target offer penalty’s.
The Dreamcast and Sega in general had such a unique vibe to its games and hardware. Very airy, laid-back and dare I say dreamy? Even if I don't have the time to play much these days I still listen to the soundtracks like the overworld music from Shenmue just when you leave the dojo and explore the streets. Instantly takes me back 20+ years.
Yes there was a unique premium feel to everything back then. It felt ‘created’ not just manufactured. I always say the fact SEGA wasn’t so focused on the business decisions was part of why it was so creative
@@thegamelounge659 That's true, their marketing descisions always seemed a bit... let's say "experimental". There's this special edition with the face of their managing director on the packaging. I mean, I love those kind of things but for the majority this probably was too crazy - at least for a game console.

The captures are via emulation. So a good chance this smooths things out somewhat. Although I have played the game a lot of real hardware and it’s pretty damn smooth
20:28 i walked into a brand new video game store with my brother in my city on 11/22/1999 and saw a Dreamcast with Hydro Thunder and got to play that and Soul Calibur, and was soooo blown away we immediately went home and pooled out money and bought the Dreamcast that same day!
What still gets me to this day is the resolution and the speed/framerate of the best looking games. Sure there were a few that suffered like Metropolis Street Racer, but 480p and 60 frames a second with a lot of geometry still looks great today.

I actually really liked the visuals of alone in the dark. Despite being pre rendered the mesh to create the lighting effects was very clever! Great suggestion
Que época para estar vivo 1999 ( MGS, Ocarina of Time, Shenmue….)
@@thegamelounge659 yeah most of my friends did, even though most of them used to go play games like virtua fighter 3, soul calibur, MVC, code Veronica..A couple of them got it when the DC was on its last legs and got cheaper
Were you basing these opinions on playing them at original resolution on a crt or at higher resolutions on an emulator the way they were shown in the footage? Its not really fair to compare games at resolutions they werent meant to be played at. Some of the effects were specifically designed for certain displays and resolutions and they dont work at others.
So actually a bit of both here. I played 90% of these games originally on a CRT, so my opinion here is based on nostalgia a lot. In fact, I can’t think of a single one I didn’t play through VGA out on an original DC, however, I have not playED THIS WAY FOR 10 years, so going back I used emulation. Even my HDMI DC hooks up to a LCD screeb
Games built from the ground up on DC or ones that took advantage of the hardware really have stood the the test of time, I use an OSSC to output at 1080P on a plasma tv, these two things outside of emulation do the DC wonders even today. My honorable mentions for best graphics would be Super Magnetic Neo Wacky Races MDK2 Street Fighter 3 Third Strike Sanfrancisco Rush 2049 4 Wheel Thunder Under Defeat
@@thegamelounge659 Why not, do a part 2, the DC has plenty of good looking games to delve into , OG hardware with scart/vga/hdmi mods,OSSC HQ2X smoothing enabled, you could even do a dedicated emulation REDREAM/DEMUL episode at 4k and show the benifits of emulating dreamcast as the DC's games and artstyles can shine when emulated at higher resolutions 16X AA etc.
I remember buying the Dreamcast knowing almost nothing about the console. The first game I booted up was Virtua Fighter and I felt so cheated. Was this the best the console was capable of? The next game was Soul Calibur and I was instantly blown away. Even after all these years the game doesn't feel particularly dated.
I’m not sure what was wrong with Virtua Fighter 3, I guess when it released in the Arcade was a couple of years earlier it had real wow factor. The model 3 architecture was very different to the DC so the conversion was quick and not as good as the arcade but side by side they aren’t a million miles apart. Yet I totally agree. Soul Calibur blew it out the water
You may want to tell people that the sound crackles and the slow down are because you are using an emulator; as the games do not look that bad on the console
@@ThoughtformsOfTheSubconsciousM Emulation per se does not suck; you have limits, if you push limits you end up with incorrect results. The rule of thumb is that emulation is good at hardware when you can exceed the original specs by 20-30x to get enough speed and headroom to account for bad programming and not perfect performance optimizations. FPGA is not perfect either; you need to write code to make FPGA "devices"; which has the same exact issues of emulators, as you need powerful devices with enough logic cells to construct the hardware you want to replicate; and you need people writing performant logic code
Great video for technical reasons, but speak for yourself at 12:32. Imo they made the hunting and shooting worse in adventure 2. The shooting in 2 is much slower, more clunky and drags in places compared to Gamma's. Knuckles/Rouge's moves and feel is better than 1, but the one at a time radar artificially lengthens playtime. Even the mostly great speed sections are more closed off, ditched the euphoric spin dash jump and have less shortcuts. I'd rather play any big or amy level more than most of 2's shooting levels.
Thanks, fair point. I think in Adventure I felt like there was just too much outside of the brilliant Sonic levels. If you dial in to the main mechanics then you may be right…

Yes native support of Naomi would be amazing, if they have done it with Atomiswave then I would hope it would be possible with Naomi. I think the Naomi board had a little more ram so the DC ports had to be optimised. Great list. Amazing people have so many different opinions
@@thegamelounge659 Yes, the Naomi has more RAM for certain games, the graphics or the fluidity would have been reduced, but with a team like that of Sega, we could have had something magnificent. Over time, the technique would surely improve. Yes, everyone has their own conception of a video game, its graphics, gameplay, etc. Likewise, it's nice to see everyone's tastes, especially when it concerns the Dreamcast 😁. My pleasure.
Shenmue was just amazing! As a Nintendo fan, I rushed to buy a Dreamcast as soon as I saw it. I had barely resisted Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur but Shenmue was just from another planet. One of my absolute favorite games to date.
MDK2 and Soul Reaver were both great looking games on DC. Not sure how they’re not on this list. I would have ranked Rayman 2 higher as well. I always thought it was one of the best looking. NHL 2K is another one that looked great.
Agree, Soul Reaver was certainly the best version of that game. Both were in my shortlist. I never really played the NHL games on DC. I will need to check them out
If you didn’t mention HeadHunter and Ecco I was going to but I would like to add that although it didn’t necessarily push the DreamCast to its limits Confidential Mission had pretty good graphics and so did another beautiful game called StarLancer! 😎
Sadly no, and now you make the point perhaps I overlooked this. The DC version wasn’t just an upscaled PS version but had a number of improvements over PS/PC
I had a Dreamcast back then too and was very proud of this console. I always thought the Dreamcast was more powerful than a PS2. Of course the graphics on the Dreamcast were always very sharp and had good anti-aliasing and the colors looked great. Despite that you have to admit that you could see from games like GT 3-4 that the PS2 was a crazy polygon machine. This game would never have been possible on the Dreamcast. Sega GT was an attempt to compete. Unfortunately the game was washed out, the curves were angular and it looked like a better N64 game. You often got the impression that a lot of Dreamcast games were actually PS One games with anti-aliasing and higher resolution. Of course there are other examples like Dead or Alive 2 or Soul Calibur. But they only looked better because of the better anti-aliasing and sharper image.
Agree, by the end of the lifecycle I think the PS2 was ahead, but I do think there was more in the Dreamcast with a couple of years of expierience we would have seen even better games.
Almost agree but REZ is more an awsome ambiant STG than top graphics title. Maybe Daytona USA (VGA mode of course) worth better, and games like Frame Gride, Air Force Delta or Spawn have to me, an honorable mention
A few people have mentioned Daytona and I have to say, on visuals alone I agree. Probably an oversight on my part. Rez I just think visually is crazy. Maybe not a technical masterpiece but in terms of design and artistry I really love the look of it
I think such lists should separate re-released games, like make the list name only EXCLUSIVE games and/or gamest hat multiplaform but best on Dreamcast. I was "disappointed" that you put Shenmue #1 because it has superior version, so that place could be used for some exclusive Dreamcast game instead also i think some other games had re-relases on PC and modern consoles
Thanks for the feedback. I partially agree. I guess it depends if you are looking at a list of the best ways to play these games now. Shenmue was mind blowing t the time and still looks good on DC today. Another list of with the best looking exclusive games could be worth it. Or simply ‘best looking games where the DC still has the best version’ (would need to rethink title 😂), because games like Ferrari F355, Hydro Thunder, Soul Reaver, Alone In The Dark: New Nightmare still have the best versions on DC
All were better than PC IMO. Soul Reaver in particular had improvements to the character model etc. the early 2000’s certainly were not a golden era for console PC ports.
I agree, for me the first game was the better fighter. With the second having more of a smash Bros element too it. Visually I think the second is the better game, but overall I prefer the first too 🍻🍻
PS was fun ... till you take all gems and break the game ... in PS2, you still have a chance to survive, that why people prefer this opus. Still have the 2nd ... I exchanged the 1st game for Heavy Metal Geomatrix ... CAPCOM rules
@thegamelounge659 was way better than Hydro Thunder (better true to life playing field streets vs underwater sewer race lol.. Sonic u got right.. i found out abt Headhunter cool
I think it was actually a 64 bit machine. Still think the dreamcast was in the same ballpark as the overhyped ps2. Ot has actually more video memory and AA, higher max resolution.
Yes the 16bit, 32bit, 64 bit, 128bit marketing was great back in the day. It’s interesting I only recently learnt that the DC wasn’t actually 128bit. Kind of sad!

True, the streaming nature from the disc would have been difficult on the DC due to the 1GB GDROM capacity alone, before you have thought about the immediate visuals but I do believe it could have been done
@@thegamelounge659 disc storage capacity is not such a big problem. I am sure it would be possible to squeeze it in. As many asset needed to be downscale for a decent DC port = naturally takes less space. It’s more down to the streaming and memory management itself. Remember that PS2 had quite a lot more memory that DC. Also if we compare with headhunter it loads all level directly so no streaming. Also the traffic as said in Headhunter is basically just a static traffic system where there is a lot more going on in the PS2 version. Also those things eats up the CPU time and DC don’t have the luxury of a dedicated unit for this at it needs to handle game logic and T&L on the same CPU = less power for T&L = less amount of polygons. But a feature with a little less geometry details/ draw distance. Or less dynamic features could most likely be possible
Thanks for the comment Luke. See I disagree here. The PS2 version has some things added, voice acting, bosses l, new hub world and some more detailed visuals in places. But a lot of the changes were just surface level. The Dreamcast version ran at 60fps with native widescreen support at a higher resolution. The PS2 only ran at 30. They didnt have many great games for the north American market like the Japanese market. Japan had tons of great and fun games while the North American market didnt get shyt. Dreamcast also lived past 2003 in japan lol
It undersold, not underrated. Its near universally loved.
Its amazing how back then I remember seeing Soul Caliber, Ecco and Shenmue and was thinking "how can this get any better?"
In 1998 there were also the insane 3DFX Voodoo 2 card for PC that almost made Dreamcast look bad. lol
If they quit making systems the Dreamcast would still look amazing LOL
It never did get any better we just got obsessed with more and more useless details and more and more hardware rather than efficient use of already hardware
The Dreamcast launched on my birthday in 1999 so i had to get one. I was a Nintendo kid, and the Dreamcast was my first Sega console. NBA and NFL 2k, Airforce Delta, Ready to Rumble boxing, crazy taxi, RE Code Veronica, Soul Caliber, Sega GT, sega bass fishing with the rod ,and the list goes on. So many fond memories, one of the best console ever
So many good games, what makes it a little sad is this was all within about a 2 year period and somehow the console still failed!
Looking at these graphics now and remembering being a teenager and my jaw dropping at what the Dreamcast was then capable of makes me feel incredibly old.
To make you feel worse 9.9.99 will be 25 years ago this year. It didn’t even release on that date in the UK but it’s still famous. 😂
Haha, I actually used to tins the PSO community super nice. Always helping, the amount of times people would just give me weapons etcZ
Shenmue was the reason I bough the dreamcast, just absolutely incredible one of my favorite games I ever played.
The people that played that game at launch truly had an incredible experience most wouldn’t see in games for many years
I have really fond memories of Headhunter and I need to go back and play it again.
I want to play it too now with all the love it’s had in the comments!
I bought the Japanese release of the Dreamcast at an import store in Chinatown when it was released because I couldn't wait to play it. I was blown away at the visuals at the time, especially the framerates because there was nothing like it in terms of 3d graphics.
Yes, I remember a friend bringing one back from Japan with Soul Calibur and everyone being blown away
I still Love the Dreamcast all these years later and still play it on a regular basis, probably just as much as any other console. So much fun and memories with DC.
It really was an arcade at home given the huge number of arcade conversions. There are so many games that are so easy to just pick up and play even today.
It was the best console of those years!
Dreamcast and Code Veronica - good times, good games.
So many great memories
Shenmue blew my head off as a kid. :-)
You and me both
Great Video....still we shouldnt forget about Tokyo Highway Challenge 2...for me the Car Models look much better here than for example in MSR....especially when it comes to light relfections etc. which in MSR unfortunately are left out completely
Very true, TGC2 was a game I hardly played at launch but is so well regarded I need to give it a go
MSR is one of my favourite racers, such a classic!
Code Veronica is one of the games I can still play happily. I’ve heard a remake may be in the works
Agree, although I worry they would lose the magic. Thanks for the comment
"Greetings, you must be the lovely Claire Redfield", this event still stucks in memory ...
Yep, classic 90’s game voice acting!
Great list, man. I'm so glad to see your inclusion of Ikaruga. For me, most of the shmups on the DC looked amazing. Titles like Border Down, Zero Gunner 2, Mars Matrix and Under Defeat are graphically gorgeous!
Thanks, yes the DC had some great looking Shmups. Although I never tried Mars Matrix. Worth a look?
I love Giga Wing 2. Brilliant game, and agree it looks great.
Dream cast was particularly superior, but it just didn't chime with the public for various reasons.
Yes, the product was bordering on perfect. They did everything they needed to do (aside from a DVD Player) but a mix of the failure of the Saturn and success of Sony PS1 meant there wasn’t a lot SEGA could do
Did you captured this footage from Ayn Odin/ Odin2? I notice the white line on the right side...
Some of it yes, it’s just so easy and I can capture on the go if I am travelling. I’m building up a lot of archive footage now though
Great video! I loved head hunter, it was frustrating at times but the visuals and style were awesome.
Dreamcast died too early.
Thanks for the comment. Yes Headhunter seems to be getting a lot of love in the comments. It really was a great game. Although Jack was a terrible shot 😂
@@thegamelounge659 yeah he was a terrible shot, god job your gun has unlimited ammo!
The SH-4 processor found in the Dreamcast is a 32-Bit CPU. The term “128-Bit” was purely a marketing tool.
It does however support a 128Bit instruction set, that's likely why they could say that.
Technically they didn't lie, they just stretched the truth.
The Sh-4 is partially 128bits and the graphics chip is 128bits too.
It has 128 bit accessories and will always be the first 128 bit console to me 😂
I can’t believe it’s been 25 YEARS since the Dreamcast was released! 😮
So many great memories playing this all day long with my family as a kid 😩🙌
Damn, I really miss the good ol’ days 😢❤
Yeah it’s insane. The Dreamcast, at least time wise is officially retro 🤣
everyone always misses on speed devils racing game def a hidden gem looks fantastic and has cool hazards to watch out for one of my favs on the dreamcast
It’s a great game, I discovered it only a few years ago. So much fun. But if shameless self promotion but it does feature in my best DC racing video
The game is not hard at all
Top list. I'm currently replying the MSR/PGR series (my favourite racing series of all time) and all of them still hold up so well.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed. I only played PGR3 all the way through after MSR. I did love PGR though
Thanks, glad you enjoyed. I only played PGR3 all the way through after MSR. I did love PGR though
Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't virtua fighter 3b pretty clean too?
It looked good, I actually think people were too harsh on it overall but I don’t think it’s in the same league as DOA2 or Soul Calibur

Wow, Mega Drive to Dreamcast is an insane leap. It’s literally 2 generations
Yes you are right Shenmue masterpice Dreamcast power Max
Can’t believe the JP version actually released in 1998!
Amazing top 20! I owned all these games but a couple.
Dreamcast is still my favorite console ever, even if I had a lot since C64
Agree, it still holds a place amongst my top consoles. Up there with the Mega Drive and Xbox 360
I remember when i first got my dreamcast and we saw Resident Evil Code Veronica. It was absolutely stunning.
Code Veronica was incredible. Such a leap from the PS games
@@thegamelounge659 I remember getting all emosh with the whole Steve outcome. I also remember thinking "I really need to just keep healing to escape", Also remember this being the time we had dialup modems so would use my dreamcast modem now and again for hints lol
The story was the first Resident Evil story that I really got invested in. The voice acting had come a long way from the PS days.
19:05 Why your record of Shenmue runs smoothly? I finished Shenmue 2 in my SEGA Dreamcast in 2001 or 2002 but it never ran this smooth!
The captures are via emulation. So a good chance this smooths things out somewhat. Although I have played the game a lot of real hardware and it’s pretty damn smooth
@@thegamelounge659
Mine also ran smoothly but not this smooth. Maybe back in the day it depends on what CRT you are using?
20:28 i walked into a brand new video game store with my brother in my city on 11/22/1999 and saw a Dreamcast with Hydro Thunder and got to play that and Soul Calibur, and was soooo blown away we immediately went home and pooled out money and bought the Dreamcast that same day!
Great times, scary to think that’s almost 25 years ago!
Hi and thx for the nostalgy ! Just i think you missed NBA 2K1 , Alone in the dark and Stupid invaders .
You are very welcome! NBA is a series that certainly should have been in the more I think about it
What still gets me to this day is the resolution and the speed/framerate of the best looking games. Sure there were a few that suffered like Metropolis Street Racer, but 480p and 60 frames a second with a lot of geometry still looks great today.
Totally agree, this is 25 year old hardware and it totally holds up

Thanks for the comment. Yes the VGA out really looked incredible. Gave the Dreamcast such a clean image that still holds up today.
You left out Alone in the Dark. It was the last Dreamcast game I played. And the best looking one. I dare say it’s even better looking than Shenmue.
I actually really liked the visuals of alone in the dark. Despite being pre rendered the mesh to create the lighting effects was very clever! Great suggestion
I love the Dreamcast ❤ Thanks for the video!

Que época para estar vivo 1999 ( MGS, Ocarina of Time, Shenmue….)
I remember being 15 when the Dreamcast was launch, I sold my PS1 and bought the DC, to this day one of my favorite consoles of all time
Love that, so many people just let the DC pass by waiting for the PS2! They seriously missed out
@@thegamelounge659 yeah most of my friends did, even though most of them used to go play games like virtua fighter 3, soul calibur, MVC, code Veronica..A couple of them got it when the DC was on its last legs and got cheaper
What emulator are you using as the resolutions are clearly higher than on a regular DC?
DC I generally use Redream or the Flycast Retroarch core. I have to say though this resolution is only 1 up from the DC’s VGA output
Games built from the ground up on DC or ones that took advantage of the hardware really have stood the the test of time, I use an OSSC to output at 1080P on a plasma tv, these two things outside of emulation do the DC wonders even today.
My honorable mentions for best graphics would be
Super Magnetic Neo
Wacky Races
MDK2
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike
Sanfrancisco Rush 2049
4 Wheel Thunder
Under Defeat
Amazing, i can’t believe all the great looking games that people have suggested in the comments. Honestly I am tempted to do a second list!
Thanks for raising, yes for some reason the ODIN I captured on seems to have issues via emulation. No reason as it is fast enough.
Exactly, and this is why emulation sucks.
If you dial in to the main mechanics then you may be right…
Just modded my dreamcast with GDEMU after the disc drive died. You just gave me a quality list of games to put on my list to add to my SD card. Great videos keep up the good

Great list. Amazing people have so many different opinions
@@thegamelounge659 Yes, the Naomi has more RAM for certain games, the graphics or the fluidity would have been reduced, but with a team like that of Sega, we could have had something magnificent. Over time, the technique would surely improve.

My pleasure.
Are shenmue controls really that bad?
Difficult to say, I am used to them having played it 20 years ago. I think if you are new to Shenmue it can maybe be a little strange

Shenmue was just amazing! As a Nintendo fan, I rushed to buy a Dreamcast as soon as I saw it. I had barely resisted Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur but Shenmue was just from another planet. One of my absolute favorite games to date.
Couldn’t agree more. I loved my N64, but the DC was simply incredible and Shenmue was the pinnacle
I still think the image output of Dreamcast beats PS2 and even Gamecube. DC with VGA couldn’t be beat
Yes, both consoles had a bit more power but you are right. Pure image quality the DC wins
Good top 20!👌

MDK2 and Soul Reaver were both great looking games on DC. Not sure how they’re not on this list. I would have ranked Rayman 2 higher as well. I always thought it was one of the best looking. NHL 2K is another one that looked great.

Awesome job!
Thanks so much!
What about Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, or Shadow Man? Both of those are visual and gameplay masterpieces!!
Soul Reaver certainly was a beautiful game. I guess as these were upscaled PS1 games I disregarded these
I don't have time to watch this right now, but I hope you included Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver
That LeManns racing game takes the cake here for best graphics ever on a dreamcast...2nd place soul calibur
I have to admit I never played Le Mans back in the day. I think if I had have done I would rate it higher
@@thegamelounge659 Lemans was a graphically impressive racing game on the dreamcast...
Maybe not a technical masterpiece but in terms of design and artistry I really love the look of it
11:19 damn I wish they would come out with another soul calibur
It’s class, a few people have commented that the game looks even better on a CRT
Can we get a soul calibur collection
I think such lists should separate re-released games, like make the list name only EXCLUSIVE games and/or gamest hat multiplaform but best on Dreamcast.
I was "disappointed" that you put Shenmue #1 because it has superior version, so that place could be used for some exclusive Dreamcast game instead
also i think some other games had re-relases on PC and modern consoles
Thanks for the feedback. I partially agree. I guess it depends if you are looking at a list of the best ways to play these games now. Shenmue was mind blowing t the time and still looks good on DC today.
Another list of with the best looking exclusive games could be worth it. Or simply ‘best looking games where the DC still has the best version’ (would need to rethink title 😂), because games like Ferrari F355, Hydro Thunder, Soul Reaver, Alone In The Dark: New Nightmare still have the best versions on DC
@@thegamelounge659 You mean even better then PC? for Soul River and AinD? or console-wise?
All were better than PC IMO. Soul Reaver in particular had improvements to the character model etc. the early 2000’s certainly were not a golden era for console PC ports.
The Dreamcast was so good!!! 👌
So true, one of the best times in gaming!
I’m probably in the minority but I highly prefer Power Stone (1). The second game was just too crazy and busy for me. 🍻
Crazy Taxi as hon mention only?!?! u gotta be kiddin
Just shows how good so many DC games were 💪🏻
@thegamelounge659 was way better than Hydro Thunder (better true to life playing field streets vs underwater sewer race lol.. Sonic u got right.. i found out abt Headhunter cool
House of the dead: Were meeting G over there. (Bored sounding voicd acting)
That was part of 90’s culture. Up there with Resident Evils “the master of unlocking comment”
where virtua figher 3?
I think it’s a decent conversion but certainly not as good looking as DOA2 or Soul Calibur…
Ready to rumble was awesome
I loved the first Ready 2 Rumble. I remember a playable Demo of the game was one of the first DC games I ever played ahead of launch
Where is Sturmwind ??
Good point, it’s a beautiful game. I didn’t include after market games though
RE:Code Veronica Remake is in development
Is that confirmed? Amazing if true
Headhunter is really impressive for the console, in some ways superior to the ps2 verison.
Absolutely, to me the game proves something like GTA3 could have been done on DC.
@@thegamelounge659texture color clarity is a lot better and the Jack shadow is far superior on DC compared to PS2
Sadly it has little to do or prove about GTA3. Very very different tech conditions (GTA3 Has a LOT more going for itself) but I always feel flattered that people kid of see the HH biking sequences as compared to GTA3 :)
Dead or alive was the best graphical game for dreamcast
It was pretty special that for sure
Rayman 2 revolution for the ps2 is the best version, it was released in 2001
Thanks for the comment Luke. It comes down to personal preference in the end and some will prefer the PS2 version but for me the DC has the edge
@@thegamelounge659I play ps2 and to me PS2 has the best games of the sixth generation, fantastic exclusives such as:

Agree, PS2 had some incredible games. It took a while to catch the DC bit devs persevered and even now I am discovering new games even now. It had an incredible lifespan too. Active for over a decade which back then was unheard of.
0:02 some one accidentally put the disc the wrong way up
😂😂😂
Headhunter still looks amazing
Yes, parts of the game are stunning
A new Jet Set Radio Game has been announced btw
That’s true now you mention it, although I’m trying not to get my hopes up
