- Hello folks, today I'd like to share with you the answer to a question which we get asked quite often: how do I properly hook a minnow?
The interesting thing about rigging minnows is that there are multiple ways to hook them. You can rig them various way through the head as an example.
In this video, we go over various methods on how to rig a live minnow and the advantages of each way.
Until next time, good luck and good fishin'

This is my favorite remark!
Never knew there were so many good ways to hook a minnow. Thanks
Solid advice. I'm gonna try all those methods on my first minnow to catch fish
That was a hell of a minnow!
Thanks for this tip. I'm going out tomorrow to fish with my son. This will be his first time fishing. We'll try out the first method. I like the idea of keeping them alive longer.
Thanks for the tips! I'm going walleye fishing this weekend for the first time and I will be using several of these hooking tactics on my minnows. Hopefully it will be a productive day on the river
Thanks for writing in and hope you have an outstanding day on the water :)
Exciting, great demonstration, thank you so much!

glad you enjoyed this episode and thanks for taking time to write :)
I know this is a older post but I have to say it give me more options. I have always used a minnow needle and a leader about 6inch or more and a treble hook. I have cought 3 or 4 fish with 1 minnow. But I have dropped my last needle and couldn't find it. Thanks for the informational video. Good luck out there.
Thanks for the great video. I plan on trying all of these on my fishing trip in a couple of weeks. :D
Sounds great and good luck - hope you have an outstanding fishing trip :)

Good stuff as always showed me some I didn't know!!!
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode doe Daniel and good luck on the water :)
I've been using the perch rig lately with Minnows, however, I double hook the minnows through the top of their backs. This way, it stays on and is just as effective. I live two miles from the Saginaw River, which is ABUNDANT with Walleye and Perch. I've had nothing but pure success using this method. Goodluck fishermen, and thanks for the video *****
Thanks for writing in and so glad to hear you are having some great days on the water :)
To Ruben - yes - these tips are also great for saltwater fishing and anchovies, smelt, ect...

Toughest minnow ive ever seen!!!
Thundermist Lures which one of these wats is best for pike fishing. I was going through the upper lip but when a fish bits it rips the minnow off the hook.
Good fishing caught some big fish with this!
Sounds like some great days on the water :)
nice video, this is very helpful thanks for posting this.
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode and thanks for writing in :)
Hi thanks for the info. I knew of 4 ways, but the one of hooking just through the top snout and then out thur the upper lip is new to me and I will definitely try it as soon as opening fishing this year in Wisconsin. Thanks again
Great to hear from you in Wisconsin Kim and good luck on opening day :)
Another method we always used, particularly when jigging rivers for walleye, is to go through the mouth, out the gill, back into the belly and out the top of the back. Keeps the hook inline and in a good position for an immediate hookset with the jig. Obviously doesn't keep them very lively though.
Thanks for sharing your minnow rigging tips with us and good luck on the water :)
I got my first yellow perch it was a jumbo, on lake Erie with a spine hook minnow splitshot and a bobber.
Tight lines everybody!
Very well done video
First time in my life I felt sorry for a minnow😢
Literally came to say this same thing hahaha after each hook I was speaking for the minnow “OUCH SHHHHHT WHAT WAS THAT?! Glad that’s over…wait…what’s he doing with that hook…NOOOO!”
Thank You for your ideas. Good video. Mr. Lures.

hey thanks Ivo, I always wanted to try using minnows
Minnows work well as bait and hope you are able to give them a try - if you ice fish at all, they work great there as well :)
***** What is the best way to catch minnows to use as bait? I can't wait to start fishing with live bait this spring!!
GreatWhiteNorth82 We like to use a minnow dip net - seems to work really well :)
Excellent!
Superb explanation!
Specially coming from a Lure driven guy...(I'm surprised, gladly surprised)
Regards.
Fred.

I love that between the eyes out of the mouth way. I’m going to try that.

That's good ..thanks for your effort
Doha Qatar Glad you enjoyed this video and thanks for writing in :)

Thanks for tuning in Robert and glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode :)
Good tips guy.
Glad you enjoyed this episode and thanks for taking time to write to us :)
Great video and even better comments about the poor minnow LMAO!!!!!
Thank you!
The whole time I was thinking poor minnow just kill it already
I use the tail hook method, it keeps the hook from going deep and setting the hook in the gullet.
The gill method works well in the faster water of the Missouri river where I live.
thanks sooo much u always a help
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode :)
Thank you
I just watched this clip and thought to myself WOW...…..That minnow is being tortured...….Then I read all the comments.....LOL

Great info for sure, and the timing could'nt be better. I've got the fishing itch that needs to be scratched and i have a long weekend off coming up this week. Thanks.
Good luck this week end - hope you have a great day of fishing :)
Much knowledge
Great tips Ivo as always. I really enjoy your videos. I have a problem of throwing minnows off my hook when i cast especially when hooking them through the back. Any idea what i'm doing wrong and how I can fix it?
Try to not cast so hard - for example, in order to get more casting distance, use a longer rod and you will be able to gently cast but still yet gain distance. Also, perhaps you can double hook through the top of the back - good luck :)
Thanks!
Very nice tip :-)
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging tips episode Ben :)
Do you know a website were you get free luresb:-?
Ben Parra not sure about that one Ben :)
Ok thanks
Thanks! :)
Great video, dont mind all the peta folks feeling bad for the minnow!
it was an honorable sacrifice... I mean maybe not a voluntary one but it is still appreciated
This is the pope of minnows it's so holy now 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol thats funny 🤣🤣
Smoking good info..
Will these tips be useful for bigger bait fish such as live anchovies or smelt ? Like for saltwater fishing ?
Nice
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode - next week on deck is night bite crappies :)
Nice tip. thx :-)
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode :)
Thank you I'll try the thin wire hooks any advice on fishing blown out rivers and muddy visibility for spring steelhead bait, color , etc. for the minnow rig does the t turn rig work pretty good for pier fishing
muddy visibility makes for tougher fishing, but you can use such things like a bright orange yarn fly for better visibility and the T-Turn bait rigs work great for pier fishing :)
thanks man
Glad you enjoyed this episode Joseph and thanks for writing in :)
your welcome
I used live minnows years ago to catch big trout (UK) I put the hook through the tail, one wrap of the line round the back of the body, put the hook just under the dorsal, then another wrap round the front of the body, then in the gill and hook ends up pointing out the mouth. Was guaranteed to attract the best brown trouts
Thanks for sharing your tips with us :)
Hall of Fame minnow!
The minnow was like. Please! slit my throat. 😖 hahahha I love your show thundermist. But i dying laughing as you kept going . Poor bastard lol jhahah. Good job and video lol
Y'all know you feel sorry for this minnow..lol Good video
I'm thinking about maybe using minnow for winter run Steelhead. Think it will work down here in Calif for steelhead?? I like the video.
Hi Stefano - minnows will work great for you - steelhead love them :) Glad you enjoyed the video
Personally I perfer the lip hooking method but I clip one of the side fins to keep the minnow off balance and wiggling more. More wiggles-more bites!
Thank you....FINALLY an honest comment....I'm trying to cement a bond with my son....and BOTH of us learn in the process.....any other tips are well accepted! Ty again!
PERFECT
Glad you enjoyed this minnow rigging episode :)
hi i like your videos they motivate me to go fishing
i like in San Diego close to the beach. do minnows are the same as the small fish u can catch in the beach shore? ive seen people catching them for bait. can i use them to take it to a lake and fish with ? i would appreciate your advice
+Leo Dlva Hi Leo....they would be very similar and used the same way as minnows and they are great to use as bait and to fish with - however, check your local regulations as it is possible that your state may or may not, allow the transportation of bait form one body of water to another :)
Nice video. Explains the ups and downs of hooking each way and shows about the main ways there are to hook up.
When I fish, i usually get bass, perch, and crappie. Will these fish take a minow?
Also, I don't think they will, but would sunnys, catfish, and carp take a live minow?
Glad you enjoyed this video and actually, all the fish you mentioned will take a minnow :) It wouldn't be my first choice for carp or sunfish though :)
Kevin Dunse Wow - nice catch. Be sure to let your dad know :) Well done!
That minnow is a martyr to other minnows!
...thanks for writing in :)
Hey! I enjoyed it. It was informative. And I know you used a different minnow each time..you just didn't show it on the video to make it short, right? :-)
@@cebuboy1976 no it was the same minnow the whole time
The reply from the "Notorious Angler" below seems to describe the "Hook line and Threader" method. I just recently saw their product and was curious as to how long their minnows live.
Have you seen or tried their "thru the mouth and out the vent" approach yet?
I have not tried that product so if you do, let us know how you make out :)
Hey nice videos especially the trout ones I fish a lot of steams in Lake Ontario tributaries. Does the thin wire hook work for big fish like a good size steelhead and brown
....as long as it is a good quality thin wire hook, it should be o.k., but if it's a bigger trout, there is a possibility of it straightening out - be sure to use your drag and not apply a lot of pressure :)
It works
Thanks for writing in :)
Hey thundermist I have a question what do walleye hook the best on I really want to know and great video by the way keep it up
Conner Smith Hi Conner - I'd have to say minnows and Worms.....a nice night crawler on the back f an SP1 or SP2 Viper spoons will catch plenty of walleye as well as a Flexi jig & minnow combo, or a T-Turn live bait rig with minnows :)
I will torture 1 minnow for every comment about how he tortured the minnow. Keep it up sissies.
Haha, you're just cruel and probably a psychopath, fucking loser lol.
Do it. Any way I don't like people torturing minnow x 99999999. Do it 99999999 times now.
I've also read about hooking on top of the back and then back out the back so that the longer part of the hook is essentially running along the back and the hook comes out and sort of forms a C. Not sure of its effectiveness. Have you tried it out?
+Alek Mellen Hi Alek - yes, that is yet another method which could be used :) Tanks for writing in and good luck on the water
Next time you think you're having a bad day, think about this minnow.
Do you have a video on the proper crappie rig?
Hi! I'm fishing a dock where our family boat is tied up. There are countless boats and many places for big fish to hide. Are minnows good for this situation? They are bass, striper, panfish and very few gar. Thanks!
Minnows would be ideal for that situation. we like to rig them live on a t-turn bait rig as they can swim around freely, with out tangles or line twist. Good lcuk out there - you should do really well :)
I always did through the mouth and out the eyes... does that work too?
I understand using live bait and hooking minnows is all part of fishing, and the fish would probably be doing it to us too if they were higher up the food chain but there's still something about it that's hard to stomach. Minnows are great for trout fishing though and I always use them or worms, that's just the way it is. Some people hook them incorrectly which is a lot worse, at least Ivo is showing people how to do it properly
Hi Aidan - very nice to hear from you and thanks for taking time to write and for your feedback - good luck on the water - hope you have a great year in 2014 :)
Thanks Ivo and the same to you and your family :) I look forward to your new videos throughout the year and I'll keep you posted if I catch any nice ones myself :)
I always do the either the tail or the bottom lip/top lip but not both at same time one or the other depends on the water cause heavy current usually I do top lip or tail because when I do bottom lip on heavy current it gets taken off easier so if waters calm I'll do tail or bottom lip ruff water tail or top lip
Thanks for taking time to write and good luck on the water :)
What size should the thin wire long shank hook be? Also could you give me the names of the hooks 3 turn swivil and the sinkers you use thanks
You can use a size 6 or size 4, thin wire long shank hook, Aberdeen style and the t-turn is size small, which is part number 7x8 and has a 35 lb capacity - you can get all this in the pre-tired t-turn bait rig number 1A or number 1A-6-G
@@thundermistlures thank you so much pro fisher man 😊
