  • Hello folks, today I'd like to share with you the answer to a question which we get asked quite often: how do I properly hook a minnow?
    The interesting thing about rigging minnows is that there are multiple ways to hook them. You can rig them various way through the head as an example.
    In this video, we go over various methods on how to rig a live minnow and the advantages of each way.
    Until next time, good luck and good fishin'

    I know this is a older post but I have to say it give me more options. I have always used a minnow needle and a leader about 6inch or more and a treble hook. I have cought 3 or 4 fish with 1 minnow. But I have dropped my last needle and couldn't find it. Thanks for the informational video. Good luck out there.

    I've been using the perch rig lately with Minnows, however, I double hook the minnows through the top of their backs. This way, it stays on and is just as effective. I live two miles from the Saginaw River, which is ABUNDANT with Walleye and Perch. I've had nothing but pure success using this method. Goodluck fishermen, and thanks for the video *****

    Another method we always used, particularly when jigging rivers for walleye, is to go through the mouth, out the gill, back into the belly and out the top of the back. Keeps the hook inline and in a good position for an immediate hookset with the jig. Obviously doesn't keep them very lively though.

    • @thundermistlures

      Try to not cast so hard - for example, in order to get more casting distance, use a longer rod and you will be able to gently cast but still yet gain distance. Also, perhaps you can double hook through the top of the back - good luck :)

    • @thundermistlures

      muddy visibility makes for tougher fishing, but you can use such things like a bright orange yarn fly for better visibility and the T-Turn bait rigs work great for pier fishing :)

    I used live minnows years ago to catch big trout (UK) I put the hook through the tail, one wrap of the line round the back of the body, put the hook just under the dorsal, then another wrap round the front of the body, then in the gill and hook ends up pointing out the mouth. Was guaranteed to attract the best brown trouts

    hi i like your videos they motivate me to go fishing
    i like in San Diego close to the beach. do minnows are the same as the small fish u can catch in the beach shore? ive seen people catching them for bait. can i use them to take it to a lake and fish with ? i would appreciate your advice

      +Leo Dlva Hi Leo....they would be very similar and used the same way as minnows and they are great to use as bait and to fish with - however, check your local regulations as it is possible that your state may or may not, allow the transportation of bait form one body of water to another :)

    Nice video. Explains the ups and downs of hooking each way and shows about the main ways there are to hook up.
    When I fish, i usually get bass, perch, and crappie. Will these fish take a minow?
    Also, I don't think they will, but would sunnys, catfish, and carp take a live minow?

      Glad you enjoyed this video and actually, all the fish you mentioned will take a minnow :) It wouldn't be my first choice for carp or sunfish though :)

    The reply from the "Notorious Angler" below seems to describe the "Hook line and Threader" method. I just recently saw their product and was curious as to how long their minnows live.
    Have you seen or tried their "thru the mouth and out the vent" approach yet?

    • @thundermistlures

      I have not tried that product so if you do, let us know how you make out :)

    Hey nice videos especially the trout ones I fish a lot of steams in Lake Ontario tributaries. Does the thin wire hook work for big fish like a good size steelhead and brown

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  7 років тому

      ....as long as it is a good quality thin wire hook, it should be o.k., but if it's a bigger trout, there is a possibility of it straightening out - be sure to use your drag and not apply a lot of pressure :)

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  9 років тому

      Conner Smith Hi Conner - I'd have to say minnows and Worms.....a nice night crawler on the back f an SP1 or SP2 Viper spoons will catch plenty of walleye as well as a Flexi jig & minnow combo, or a T-Turn live bait rig with minnows :)

    I've also read about hooking on top of the back and then back out the back so that the longer part of the hook is essentially running along the back and the hook comes out and sort of forms a C. Not sure of its effectiveness. Have you tried it out?

    Hi! I'm fishing a dock where our family boat is tied up. There are countless boats and many places for big fish to hide. Are minnows good for this situation? They are bass,striper,panfish and very few gar. Thanks!

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  8 років тому

      Minnows would be ideal for that situation. we like to rig them live on a t-turn bait rig as they can swim around freely, with out tangles or line twist. Good lcuk out there - you should do really well :)

    I understand using live bait and hooking minnows is all part of fishing, and the fish would probably be doing it to us too if they were higher up the food chain but there's still something about it that's hard to stomach. Minnows are great for trout fishing though and I always use them or worms, that's just the way it is. Some people hook them incorrectly which is a lot worse, at least Ivo is showing people how to do it properly

    I always do the either the tail or the bottom lip/top lip but not both at same time one or the other depends on the water cause heavy current usually I do top lip or tail because when I do bottom lip on heavy current it gets taken off easier so if waters calm I'll do tail or bottom lip ruff water tail or top lip

    What size should the thin wire long shank hook be? Also could you give me the names of the hooks 3 turn swivil and the sinkers you use thanks

    • @thundermistlures
      @thundermistlures  2 місяці тому

      You can use a size 6 or size 4, thin wire long shank hook, Aberdeen style and the t-turn is size small, which is part number 7x8 and has a 35 lb capacity - you can get all this in the pre-tired t-turn bait rig number 1A or number 1A-6-G
