    I was at every home game of this intense classic NLCS in StL, including the epic Edmonds extra inning walk off in G6 and of course this G7 pennant winner. There's nothing like being at a pennant winning game and seeing your team clinch the win to go to the World Series, especially a Game 7 clincher. I've been fortunate enough to witness 3 pennants won in person; 1987 vs SF, 2004 vs Hou, and 2013 vs LA. 87 and 04 both Game 7s. The intensity is out of this world.
    This was the best Cardinals team I ever saw in person, and probably the best since the 67-68 Cardinals. Its a shame that this special team somehow lost so badly to the Red Stockings, who admittedly were on a once in a lifetime roll. The Cards lost a back and forth G1 in the Series 9-8 I think it was, and had they held on to win that game I think the whole Series would have been different. And losing Carp for the WS didn't help.
    Great memories of some classic bball though. Pujols and Beltran were unreal in this NLCS.

The big 3 all topped 1.000 OPS as well and with Edmonds and Rolen all-time great defenders and Pujols emerging as a very good first baseman himself. Don't know of many big 3s like that. Was living in the Houston area 2003-2009, so I remember the 2004 and 2005 NLCS VERY well. Needless to say, I'm glad the Astros are in the AL now!! :) I can root for them full heartedly.... except when they play the Cardinals. Obviously Pujols wasn't there, and Yadi is STILL a Cardinal (though he didn't play last night), but it was great to be there when they were presented. Shame Matheny wasn't there in general, but...not that surprising.

    Watching this is a little bittersweet for me because of how the Cardinals got humiliated in the WS. Also, knowing that we were going to lose Renteria, Womack and Matheny during the offseason. It's interesting that Brenley keeps calling Clemens a "future Hall of Famer" when we all know now that the Rocket will never make it. Such a shame he had to taint a fine career with juicing.

    • @medguy12
      @medguy12 10 років тому +1

      He never would've been considered a HOF'r if he didn't use roids. He started using when his career started fizzling out in 1995. At that point he was considered a guy who had a great run, but couldn't reach that next plateau of consistency. Thus, he was traded away to Toronto and the rest is history...

    • @mattray9904
      @mattray9904 6 років тому

      Wrong. Clemens started in '98 when the Jays hired Brian McNamee and signed Jose Canseco, hence the infamous June party at Canseco's house. And he'd only use in the second halves of those '98, '00 and '01 season for stamina so it was subtle, which is why his body didn't change. His '97 season was better overall than his '98 one. The only difference is Clemens dominated the second half of '98 after struggling to start (compared to '97) while in '97 he fizzled out somewhat in August and September compared to the first 4 months. We know Clemens 2001 steroid cycle started in August thanks to McNamee, but Clemens was actually 15-1 and leading the league in strikeouts through July so in that case it didn't appear the roids helped as his ERA dropped a negligible amount. Like Bonds, he was EASILY a HOFer before steroids and should have been first ballot, especially when they put a bigger known juicer like Pudge Rodriguez in first ballot. Thankfully, it looks Clemens and Bonds now have a good chance of finally getting in the next few years, but it's already a bad joke they've been held out.

    • @mattray9904
      @mattray9904 6 років тому

      History should be factual. That's literally a made up narrative that lazy people jumped on when they saw Clemens began juicing in Toronto, but they miss the fact it was his second year in Toronto after the most dominant year of his career in '97. Except people usually choose '96 to point to his decline, which is problematic as Clemens tied his single game record with 20 strikeouts, led the league with 257 total and 9.5 per 9, was 2nd in hits per 9, 7th in ERA(top 5 in adjusted ERA+). That's actually an outstanding final season in Boston. He had a bit of a down year in '95, but that was one of the strike-shortened seasons and he was injured keeping him out until June and was still excellent with the exception of a horrible July, but he was outstanding in the shortened '94 season as well leading the league in hits per 9 and adjusted ERA+, finishing 2nd in strikeouts(both total and per 9) and normal ERA and 3rd in WHIP. So this alleged decline is an old myth that's long been debunked. Roger was outstanding from 1986 on. He had a few off years spread out over a long career, but never more than one in a row after breaking out in '86. His worst year was probably '93, which was a good 5 years before he first used steroids.

      Yes (and I really wish they won without cheating).
      They went through years of heartbreak after heartbreak (they just couldn't seem to frickin' make it to the World Series!). This might as well be considered the dark ages for them. They make it to the NLCS here in 2004 only to get beaten by the Cardinals. In 2005, they finally make it to the world series, beating the Cardinals in the NLCS, and finally getting their chance.
      They get swept by the White Sox. And they don't make it again and suck for years after this. Not only that, but they had three of their worst records during this time. In 2015, they finally made the playoffs again, but get beaten. Same with 2016.
      Then, it happened. They made it back to the world series, beating the Yankees in the ALCS, and getting another chance. An incredible (at the time) world series ensues. Finally, after so many years, they win the World Series against the Dodgers. This seemed like an all-time high point for them. Not only that, but in 2017, 2018, and 2019, they seemingly dominated. Many hometown all-stars becoming renowned throughout the league. Not only that, but they made it back to the World Series in 2019, beating the Yankees again in the ALCS. However, they lost against the Nationals. It seemed like the greatest time period in Astros history.
      Then, it happened. The scandal broke. It ruined the Astros reputation. Their championship? Tainted. Their celebrations? Pointless. Hometown all-stars becoming some of the most hated players in the league. It seemed like the Astros were catapulted back into the dark ages. Hopefully, one day they can win a real championship.

    Clemens had his best postseasons by far with the Yankees, but he was having a fine one here until he seemed to tire in the 6th. Impressive he was still throwing 94-95 at 42 years old.

    At 0:31:28, the statistics between the Cardinals and the Astros are identical from games 1 to 6: 3 wins, .246 batting avg., 29 runs, and 4.80 team ERA. That is rare in baseball.

    guys i have a question... I'm trying to find the name of a certain
    Astros pitcher that they used to bring in at the last inning or so,
    around 2003-2004...? they would play an intro theme when he'd come out
    that featured clips of him throwing fast balls with lightning coming
    out... and the crowd would go nuts. anyone know?

    This '04 NLCS was definitely an explosive series, but the ALCS was much more memorable. It had one of if not the greatest comeback in baseball history and it was between the most historic rivalry in sports and it was even more amazing after what happened the year before in the '03 ALCS. I'm sorry but there is a reason why more people remember the ALCS than the NLCS from 2004. It was absolutely historic, plus the Sox broke the "curse" in the World Series

    9/11 wasn't an inside job. This is a country known for its fads and its tendency to overreact to issues and then forget them as everyday life pushes them into the background. God Bless America until the end of the Afghanistan war when the troops all come home will continue being the seventh inning stretch for MLB on Sunday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, opening day, and the postseason. (save for New York and Los Angeles they play it every game unlike all baseball stadiums) Your thoughts?
