- Aside from Sonic & Eggman, I think it’s safe to say Tails is the most popular character in the franchise. He’s been around only one year less than his spiky blue friend and man what a crazy 29-year journey’s been for the kid. Over the years Tails has seen many different iterations and all have been of differing degrees of quality. His cute and lovable energy hasn’t been enough to protect him from being absolutely obliterated in recent Sonic The Hedgehog stories. From being portrayed as a wimp, overly needy child, and an absolute jerk; it hasn’t been an easy road for the two-tailed fox. Where do you stand on Tails and his recent interpretations?
While I like the Adventure tails, I have a soft spot for Baby-Talk tails from the TV shows. I absolutely do not like his Lost world/Forces depiction

I think the only modern interpretation of him I liked so far is tails in sonic mania adventure and the movie. Even though he's personality aren't as fleshed out here. I also do like his idw interpretation

That engine probably wasn't the best choice for 06' but I mean, it was what was available and you can't really get any better than that since it was released around the beginning of the PS3's lifespan, atleast ChaosX have used a better engine to use for Project Sonic 06', now Sonic actually shows anger with teeth grit in a Proof of Concept cutscene.

I actually quite like the character models from 06. Same goes for the Riders models. Remember when would get new models, rather than reusing the same Unleashed one over and over again...

I liked the sharp look of Sonic, the textures of his shoes, and I'll say it was the last Sonic game with cool, stylish gameplay animations.
But sadly all of this gets written off as bad because the cutscene animations are unfinished...GAMER LOGIC!
@@Ronan34753 Plus as well with what you were saying about animations, did you know that 06 had unique idle animations for all 9 of its playable characters? Meanwhile in Forces, if Sonic is left idle, he doesn't do anything. Not even blink! Are idle animations a big deal in the grand scheme of things? Ofcourse not, its just a little thing. However if you can't take the time and care to focus on the things, how can you possibly expect the big things to get the proper attention they deserve?

Tails has always been super smart and resourceful, making a lot of helpful gear used to aid Sonic and friends. But this was something he did IN ADDITION to being perfectly capable by himself. I feel like Sonic Team forgot he can be both the technician AND a character that can keep up with Sonic.

More like they didn't want him to be the latter because that would threaten Sonic's standing. They don't want him to be Miles "Tails" Prower-just Tails. Even though his tails are what allow him to be fast and combative on his own as well as flighted and pun names are geeky by definition. Or maybe they just want his real name to reference his VEHICLES, or him being a Sonic fanboy. Or maybe Takashi Iizuka just doesn't get the pun, which would be typical of him. Or maybe the devs don't want to stump the Japanese audience with a pun on a Western measure of speed. Whatever the logic, _they certainly don't want him to be fast._
Tails used to be multiple things at once a Kind Technician, Hero, and more.

In a perfect world, Sonic Forces would've been Tails' Forces: A game where you mainly play as Tails, Classic Sonic and the avatar don't exist, and there's actually a good story and character development, especially for Tails...
I'd replace Classic Sonic with Cosmo.
I mean I'm all for a Tails game but I feel like Tails attempting to take on Eggman single handedly after he takes over the dang world is a little unrealistic

Tails was pretty ok in the beginning of the 2010s while he wasn’t in the middle of the action like adventure and heroes he still had Sonic back and even helped him out quite a bit in colors. But then lost world came around and pretty much he was an entirely different character then forces just......did stuff. But hey IDW is doing a great job with Tails so hey at least for now there’s a light at the end of this tunnel.
On the other hand, IDW hardly understands Shadow any better.
On another note, It doesn't help IDW Sonic has less freedom with its setting and lore than Archie Sonic.

In sonic Chronicles, Tails is still kind of an information machine (constantly reminding you to save your game), BUT they still managed to make him have an interesting character. Sonic left for a long time, and Tails was forced to take a leadership role in his absence, even helping knuckles protect the master emerald. Lots of things have changed since Sonic left, and Tails is one of them.
Just goes to show that you can use him for exposition while still giving him some character.
The only other person vying for that title is shadow
The Lame Six, Infinite, Chris Throndyke, and Princess Elise (even if you ignore her relationship with Sonic) are still worse.
Hopefully, sonic team learns from that, and don't make the same mistakes.
Honestly, I'm not sure if anyone wants Pontaff as writers again after their stunts with certain games.
If any of you guys support the writers . . that's your opinion, I just believe that what they've done was overall bad that ruined a lot of character development, character traits and story.
I really hope we can get new writers for the next Sonic game.
I'd be okay if it was for new characters, not existing ones.
It isn't just Pontac and Graf. Ilzuka also played a part; like how he claims Shadow is only allowed to be friends with Maria.
So yeah; both Sega of Japan and Americas are at fault and need some drastic changes of writers along with a new person in charge of the series.
So far, nobody supports the Pontaff writers and I hope it stays that way!

Tails is a character I've always appreciated as a sort of softer side to Sonic's more radical nature, I feel it compliments the overall dynamic well. Since he's a younger character I feel as though discovery is the best path for him. In Sonic Adventure he discovered his inner strength, in Sonic Forces there was the potential for Tails to discover his inner weakness and come out stronger because of it, but the story failed at that. Tails has the potential to discover so much more about himself and the world around him and I hope this is something that gets focused on in the future.
I thought Tails’s relationship with Classic in Forces was kinda bordering on unhealthy. Like he was just trying to cope with Sonic’s death by replacing him with Classic

Chris- He was a weak character, and never let Sonic and his friends go home.
Elise- She was just a bad character because she literally kisses Sonic on the lips, I really despised Elise kissed Sonic on the lips, for those who shipped Elise x Sonic which I think is nobody, something wrong with ya

The cool thing I find about Tails is that he was both a hero and a mechanic at the same time. That is a very unique character if you think about it.

Tails had downgraded by an insane amount. I loved him so much for many reasons. His adorable design, his personality outside of writing, he's pleasant to listen to for the most part and had his own character arc in the Adventure games. Even with bad writing, his voice keeps me from disliking him more than I already do. Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic X is where he is at his best. He's a great mechanic and some of his creations actually amaze me, he's one of the smartest characters in the franchise and outsmart most of his friends who are older than him, he's a caring person and is willing to help and protect his friends like he did with Cosmo, he became more independent and was able to do something without relying on Sonic and he's just a nice guy to have around before he became a wimp and a total jerk, which both frustrates me and breaks my heart seeing a beloved character fall so low just by shitty writing. Sonic X Tails is my favorite honestly. He was at his best in Sonic Adventure, but Sonic X has my favorite version by far. He's still the cute, friendly and smart yellow fox we all love, but he was also kind of a badass, especially in the final season. He's such a lovable guy that I felt sorry for him when he's upset. He also showed bravery and the determination to protect his friends, even if he can't win, as shown that he confronted Shadow, who is stronger than Tails and won't let anyone stop him and Tails decided to fight him and didn't give up. He used ways to stop Shadow in his tracks, moving from place to place from laser walls invisible to the naked eye to sending Shadow into the Sonic Power Cannon, which fired him out. He nearly succeeded if not for the fake Emerald Shadow had used for Chaos Control. He fought against Shadow, even if it causes his death to protect Cosmo. And now to mention the best part of season 3, which is my favorite season surprisingly despite the fanservice and awesomeness of the Sonic Adventure games animated in the show. The friendship between Tails and Cosmo has to be the best part and match perfectly with each other. I love both characters a lot already seperatly and having them together makes me adore them. Tails and Cosmo developed an unbreakable bond and seeing then together makes me happy. They are so adorable and Tails tries to help her and comforts her when she doubts herself. He even has grown to love her and he did anything in his power to protect her and keep her away from Shadow. Seeing Cosmo's death devastated me, not only because one of the most underrated and my personal favorite character in Sonic X dies, but also because of the reaction of Tails. He cares so much about Cosmo that he can't shoot her, because he cared more for her than anyone and when he pulled the trigger, he was left devastated from losing her and that's heartbreaking. Tails used to be number 4 on my favorite Sonic characters, but due to how horrible he's treated lately made him drop down to number 6. The only thing keeping him from getting lower on the list is that his voice is still nice to hear and the ones who voice him do a good job voicing him. Imagine hearing the Tails from now with good writing.
He would've been much better in the newer games if Cosmo was brought back. Now, he's a joke.
I hate the way he was portrayed in forces, but its not gonna make me hate him..He needs his own game again..like..really...Sega just puts too much spotlight on sonic recently and no so much anyone else, not Just Tails either!
As a person who loves Tails as a character both in the games and in Xs I can clearly say that you are 100% right. He has been missed up and hurt and turned into a wimp and a jerk and I hate that. I really do. I hate it because it is unfair to him and unfair to his voice actors who are good choices but can't seem to get any good lines at all. Honestly Pontaff should step down. He has been ruining these characters for a decade or in Tail's case making him worse. I hope with all my heart that Tails can be good again and every character can be good again in either a game, movie, or tv show cause they all deserve it especially our favorite two tailed fox.

I personally don't like the movie interpretation of sonic because he just seems like a kid finding his way in the world which is supposed to be tails' role. I like how sonics theme in sonic adventure 2 describes him to be, someone who already knows his place in the world. somebody who understands life is limited and precious and lets people live life how they want to unless it interferes with life (like how Eggman enslaves animals). Sonic lives life his own way and although he is still learning about the world, I feel he's way too clueless and childlike in the sonic movie. In the games and comics, sonics a hero. In the movie, he's some kid with superpowers and it feels like a massive downgrade of his character to me.
I never thought about it that way. However it was the first movie and maybe he will grow into that role.

Yeah he is awsome in Sonic X. Its actully a really interesting take on this. Unlike Adveture and Mania Tails in Sonic X he has very little combat capabilties but his tech genius thing is turned up to eleven. He, an 8 year old fox boy, build a giant space ship, with warp function, an energy shield, laser weapons, a security system, a hangar with a bunch of space jets and that giant Sonic Power canon. He serves as both enginier and capt of the ship and the fact that he is in physical combat relativly weak makes it honestly cool to watch him try if he got backed in to a corner. When he tried to Protect Cosmo from Shadow it was cleaer he was willing to fight till his last breath. There is somthing beautiful about the weak taking action.
It’s the writer’s faults. The writers of the Colours Era even said they don’t even care about what Sonic is supposed to be. I hope they’re not writing the 2021 games.

When it comes to tails, or most sonic charcters, they tend to suffer from the same issues found in the series that it partially takes inspiration from: the writers don't really know what to do with characters outside of their initial appearance. None of them really have over arching goals, and the story structure for sonic games isn't so dynamic that charcters can fill various positions in them.

Miles Prower learned how to be independent from his blue and red friend WAY before Miles Morales did.
In my opinion, he started his character decline with Colors, I believe he had a reason to hide from Dark Gaia's monsters in that one cutscene in Unleashed. Two, actually.
1. They were new, never-before-seen-at-the-time enemies
2. He was outnumbered, and more than likely couldn't gather the courage to fight them all off before Sonic arrived, the TItan especially.

Good writing doesn't guarantee a good game. Plus you're overexaggerating. That's the issue I have with most Sonic fans. Exaggeration and pessimism has become a way of life and it bothers me to my core. It's okay to like flawed media, hell you can even acknowledge said flaws. Just don't be arrogant.

Or if the soulless marketing gimmick wasn't there, and Tails was playable instead, he would have fought back. After all, you want what the character is doing during gameplay to marry up with the cutscenes. And it's perfectly fine for Tails to be scared, he is just a kid after all and there is no courage without fear.
The moment they hired Pontac and Graff, he became a joke. He became a coward in Unleashed, but Colors, Generations, Lost World and Forces did not even _TRY_ to make him great again. Thank god IDW and Mania made him great again.
I miss when Tails was rescuing Station Square. I miss when he interacted with Cosmo and protected Cosmo from Shadow. I miss when he invented Dummy Ring Bomb in '06.

I would argue Sonic Unleashed was the beginning of the end for Tails; considering it was the game that made Tails scared of Dark Gaia's minions.
Not to mention ilzuka himself has been playing a large role of flanderizing the characters as well.

Honestly, so far from what we saw in the end credits scene from the Sonic Movie, Tails looks like he can take care of himself!
If the 2020 movie can make Sonic great again, then they should do the same for Tails, and many more.
Honestly I don’t think Tails is even a sidekick at all in Sonic x because he is so brave.
Not exactly Tails in Sonic Unleashed displayed him pretty well because he still felt like his own character but he just wasn’t the main focus but that’s ok. Oh and Tails didn’t fear from the Gai monsters because he was scared. He could of tried to attack them if he wanted to but I think the reason he didn’t was because those were basically possessed humans and he didn’t want to hurt them.
He is a bit of a sidekick in Season 1 but it goes away sometime in season 2!

I think the reason why people don't bring up the scene in Unleashed is that in that case he is surrounded by multiple unknown monsters including a giant one while in Forces it's a weaker form of an enemy that Tails has already defeated. I think it also helps that for the rest of Unleashed Tails is on character.

I remember when I first played Sonic Lost World and Tails had that sudden argument towards Sonic.
I was angry at everyone for bringing Tails down and I always said that that moment was a perfect development moment for Tails because he had to act angry at some point.
Yet over the years I had gotten so used to it then I find myself agreeing with those people yet just now when it was mentioned in this video I immediately remembered how I stuck up for Tails with that scene and I hoped that I wasn’t following the bandwagon of everyone saying that it was a prime example of how out of character Tails was.
Yet thanks to Ricardo aka Speed Super Sonic I FINALLY understand why people hate it for he actually did bring up my first thoughts over that scene which was Tails had to be angry at some point but what makes it so out of character is that he never learns from it. Now I finally understand why people hate it so much and I don’t have to feel bad about following that bandwagon and have it be my own opinion and not just follow anybody.

Imagine your favourite character arc in any media and then a new addition to the series comes out and that character arc is completely retro Ed despite the fact the thing that caused that character arc is right there. This is one part of a cutscene in sonic forces.
Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces made me lose all respect I had for tails.

I like Tails, in my opinion he may be afraid of things like lightning and ghosts but if any danger comes and he has to face it he will have to take courage and fight instead of acting like a coward and waiting for someone to save him
In my opinion Tails getting scared of Chaos in Sonic Forces doesn't bother me that much because I'm not a fan of Sonic Forces and Sonic Generations because they already ruined Sonic for me but in Sonic X at least he tried to fight Shadow to protect Cosmo. In Sonic X I don't like it when Cream and Cheese crys more than the other Sonic characters and gets scared the most sometimes. In one episode I don't like it when Cream gets mad at Chris and running away crying. She crys the most and she is younger than Tails. Tails is 8 and Cream is 6. At least Cream fights Emerl in one episode of Sonic X.

The biggest sin Sonic Forces committed aside from the Chaos 0 debacle is portraying Charmy Fkn Bee as a more basass character than Tails. Everybody gets to have a scene at the end of physical proving themselves but all Tails does is dole out exposition and fly Classic Tails around
I also hated him in The Egg Pawn scene.

My ideal Tails is in the OVA's. He's portrayed there, as being even more heroic than Sonic, just lacking the hedgehog's physicality. In their leisure time, Tails gets high on his mechanical projects like a crazy scientist, and never stops doing stuff, while Sonic's just a lazy ass... But when shit hits the fan, Sonic takes over and Tails goes along like a backup hero, ready to take the lead role if needed. It's a great duo dynamic!
Right now Sonic games just need better writers because we need to have a feel for the characters I want to see the characters be well written not poorly written and I hope tails gets fixed please
Its depressing that Sonic Team just doesn't have the passion to write an interesting story arc for Tails like the Adventure days. Not only that, but other characters like Knuxs, Shadow, and rest of Sonic's main buds who are just background characters with barely any personality or purpose. Knuxs might not be the smartest tool in the shed, but still Sonic Team royally disrespected Knuxs character in Boom and Forces. Im not even a Knuxs fan, but man Sonic Team might as well keep Knuxs guarding the Master Emarld cuz it's depressing to see how Sonic Team made Knuxs dumb as bricks. For Shadow tho, I low-key kinda wish Sonic Team ended of Shadow in SA2 and never come back cuz basically his full on Vegeta the Hedgehog. I like Shadow's arc in SA2 and especially 06. It's cool that Sonic Team written Shadow's arc in 06 where worked with G.U.N. (Literally enemies who took everything from Shadow and want him dead) and had a nice relationship with Rouge n Omega. Kinda wish Sonic Team continue the story of Team Dark instead of Shadow being Vegeta the Edgehog, but I guess Sonic Team just can't figure how to continue Shadow's arc like the rest of the characters.

If you’re talking about the times tails hid that was actually a smart move. He’s not physically strong he’s smart he’s fast getting a direct fight with any of the characters he hid from would have killed him so he hit because he’s smart not cause hes a coward because he’s smart.

When it comes to Tails in forces, I think it should have been something like this.
Tails could have fought of the Egg Pawns and Superbadniks on his own until Sonic showed up and they take out the rest of them together. And instead of him hiding in a corner, Eggman or the other villans could have trapped him in some kind of forcefield or something while sonic was being beaten to a pulp. That would have worked. It's a shame because he used to be a great character.
