- Created in 2001, Shadow The Hedgehog took fans by storm, instantly becoming a fan favorite character thanks to his cool design, name, and beautiful character arc and backstory. After 6 years of amazing stories with the character, it seemed like a no brainer that Shadow was in fact the best Sonic The Hedgehog character of all time. Unfortunately in recent years, Shadow The Hedgehog has been completely running by the current writing and depiction of his character. No longer what he used to be, we take a look back at what made Shadow special and how he’s fallen from grace.

I hated Shadow in the IDW comics. He was such a jerk and didn't take Sonic's advice to avoid getting infected. He was HORRIBLE in Boom. I agree that Shadow was a much better character in SA2, Heroes and 06.

Honestly the thing i miss the most about shadow the hedgehog was not only his character being fantastic in the past, but also his old voice actors, personally, Jason Griffith was my favourite one.

I wouldn't mind David Humphrey be given more games to fully flesh out his version of the character as I really enjoy his portrayal in SA2, however Jason nailed it especially in 06. After he left both Sonic and Shadow got Ffed into oblivion by Roger Craig Smith and Kirk Thornton respectively.

@@stevespud2707 And izuka had a good idea....except for the actual character himself ironically enough xD I really like the basic premise of shadow the hedgehog and I hold most of the problems with the writing moreso as evidence that the final form of it was rushed like crazy because they wanted shadiw in 06 and had to conclude the story in a weird way.
But shadows character is basically the one thing where I agree with the general opinion that mistakes were made and that what happened is pure trash.

Shadow was very ambitious character for his time.
He was supposed to be a dark version of sonic and I think Sega nailed it.
Even though shadow the hedgehog turned out to be a trash fire at least Sega wanted to end his ark.
Sonic heroes also added a lot more to his character.
But after 06 he slowly just became a joke.

Bring 06 Shadow back!! That’s the Shadow who has the best personality, who has friends, and is still a badass! That’s the Shadow we all like and who got me into the Sonic games and the Shadow that I love!
Seriously that was the best depiction of Shadow. He showed his softer side for his friends Rouge and Omega. A respect and trust in Sonic. Even trying to understand the motives of his enemies with Silver and Mephiles.
He was a total badass, without needing to be a jerk about it.
@@jamalhartley5863 Thank you! Again, it was because of that depiction of Shadow that made be get into the Sonic series and I ended up loving even more characters. It honestly makes me mad that SEGA is slowly reducing him into nothing more than a bully. I can only hope that one day some one will wise up and fix him... I mean after all, they did fix Amy to still love Sonic but she's much less scary fangirl about it.

@@beta511ee4 I can't honestly, they flanderized everybody including Sonic himself. How much i like the gameplay of colors and generations, i really hate the storytelling. All they do is make shitty ass jokes. I rather wacth Sonic 06's cutscenes since at least is more intresting and character actually take things seriously when they need to.
@@beta511ee4 I can say two good things about it. I liked the overall story of lost world(it falls apart when looking at the finer details tho. Like the characters being badly written and the question of "where did eggman even find all this stuff?")
and that they almost made a good villain when it comes to infinite, even tho they made him one of the worst villains in the end instead. Actually, I can say a third semi-good thing. Shadow actually at least has a semblance of purpose in his actions in team sonic racing.

-colours and generations were brief. they didnt overstay their welcome or overstep their boundaries. colours had a rather sweet ending, and was a refreshing sonic and tails adventure.
-when i was 10, i absolutely loved zazz, and i was a big fan of the deadly six. in concept they're nice - but in practice they can't work as main villains ever - and are easily forgettable
-sonic forces had a serious storyline, and that was nice. infinite had a really cool design, and the avatar's character arc was definitely an enjoyable one.
if there's something his silver vid taught me tbh, is that there are redeeming qualities about everything; and i didnt really mind the post 2010 stories too much as a kid - but it doesn't excuse just how lackluster and absolutely bastardised they truly were

I always like to think of Shadow and Rouge's relationship as like brother and sister. She's a lot less flirty with him, the little digs they take at each other too, and they are very honest with each other. Rouge can be a shifty character but when she's working with Shadow she's pretty straight laced. The opposite for Shadow as he may even crack a joke with her.
Sometimes I often think of that to, like rouge being a big sister to omega and shadow.

See you got me with the line, Shadow has a heart, a BIG heart. Honestly you can stop right there because that’s what’s missing with the current representation of the character. It just seems like Sega just sees the edge and cool factor and that’s it. Shadow’s a hero to me. He’s a guy who despite losing everything, he still found a way to find a family and friends who have his back. That’s special. All you need for Shadow to work is have some heart and soul.

Well, maybe if we're lucky, maybe the IDW comics will fix him in future issues and if they don't then there's always the Sonic movies. Shadow might be dead for now but there's always a chance for him to be resurrected and treated right again.

Uh, unfortunately, I don't think IDW can legally fix Shadow. They tried. Their idea was rejected, and they had to make him this pathetic shell of a character.
Sadly, as long as that mandate stands... we'll only have good characterization in fan works.
I noticed alot of characters gotten regressions after Sonic 06 and sonic unleashed. Knuckles went from naive introvert who with his own set of skills he brings to the group such as his knack for treasure hunting and being able to translate ancient manuscripts to the dumb muscle. Tails goes from learning not to rely on sonic and become his own person to heavily relying on sonic to do everything. Amy goes from caring, sassy and head strong to obsessive fan girl. Sonic himself goes from cocky hero with a heart of gold to just a jackass.

I feel like the problem first started whenever they changed Shadow's voice actor from Jason Griffith to Kirk Thorton because it makes him seem more like he's just edgy. His character has been "broodish, edgy, I dont need friends" kind of character since then. Even in the Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter Takeover his character is just "I hate Sonic, I hate people, I hate everything" kind of character. Hopefully in this next game SEGA can get things right with him by listening to fans and get back on their feet :(

I've only been into Sonic related stuff for a year now, and I can say without a doubt, Shadow's character is *COMPLETELY RUINED* I'm incredibly disappointed that Sega did this to Shadow, just because he looks cold and emotionless *DOESN'T* mean that he *HAS* to be like that!!! In fact it's *BETTER* for him to be the complete *opposite* of what people see Shadow as at first glance! Because that just proves that not *EVERY* brute-looking character is *actually* a brute!!

Shadow went from a genuine badass in SA2 to an edgelord in Shadow the Hedgehog 2005 to now.

One thing i heard once about shadow's recent personality is that sega has pretty much made him the sonic equivalent to vegeta. And personally i never saw shadow as sonic's vegeta so seeing him this way breaks my heart. Sega needs to remember who their own characters are..

I swear to God, Sega only did this because everyone just ignored his character and said he was a massive edgelord because of Shadow 2005
StH wasn't too bad in my opinion. Arguably StH is what impacted Shadow's character in 06
I honestly kinda prefer Shadow's arc in heroes over that of SA2. I see it as something of a progression of where SA2 left off. What makes the whole thing work in Heroes is the ambiguity as to whether he is the real deal or an android. Just like how Shadow accepts the idea that whether he is the original or not doesn't matter, revealing it one way or the other would break the arc. Revealing that he's a fake would cause the audience to disassociate with him, but revealing he's the original would undermine SA2's ending. so in keeping it ambiguous, we get the best of both worlds; the character can stick around for the sake of fandom and marketing, but the story from SA2 is still left intact.
Now the arc itself isn't especially complicated, but I think it fits him well. He wakes up knowing nothing of who he is and he falls into a sense of existential dread because of it. On top of this, the idea that he might be a replica of the original has his head spin at the idea that he might just be a fake. But through his journey with Rouge; a thief who's put her own wishes aside to selflessly assist him, and Omega; a robot programmed specifically to kill him who is now an ally, he comes to the realization that WHAT he is cannot and will not define WHO he can be. Rouge and omega don't let labels define them, so he won't either. Regardless of whether he's the original or not, he's still himself, and that's all that matters to him.
Heroes pushes Shadow's character forward in maintaining the spirit of the ultimate life form from SA2 while being able to carry on his legacy. He may not have a direction for himself yet, but he's surrounded himself with a group of people who can guide him to wherever he may find himself.
What frustrates me is that, outside of a handful of moments from later entries, like the conclusion he comes to at the end of Shadow '05 of taking his place as Earth's defender and his resolve in '06 being shown when Mephiles shows him a future in which humanity turned on him, his arc pretty much stops at Heroes. While yes, he does develop past this point, as noted by the prior examples, he's never been at this peak since.
Shadow '05 pretty much completely undid Heroes' arc to re-instate how he was at the start of SA2, completely resetting his character development only for it all to be retread. Then it's also confirmed to us that this shadow IS the original, and the story FOCUSES ON THIS which completely contradicts the point of his arc in Heroes. I fucking despise Shadow '05 for what it represents about this character. After this point, while in '06, he had moments and some strong upholding of Heroes' characterization with some juicy, satisfying lines to have come out of him after the dumpster fire that was Shadow '05, '06 was mostly just re-inforcing what he was in Heroes, as if they were trying to tell us to ignore Shadow '05 (for the most part). After this point, he went back to being brooding and giving backhanded compliments at best. And he's never recovered from this status since.
Forces had the opportunity to compound on his character in how he's going against Infinite; someone extremely immature in their motivation who Shadow has long surpassed. In retrospect, his actions from SA2 could be viewed as somewhat petty, even if he justified them at the time. He shouldn't be stepping on Infinite like some child, he should batter him with a sense of understanding why this pettiness exists in him. And through dominating him, not only through physical capability but through moral righteousness, he'd be attempting to correct his bullshit. Infinite could have been used to symbolise what Shadow would have become if it weren't for Amy in SA2 and Rouge and Omega in Heroes. Someone clambering to prove themselves superior at any cost to their dignity. But this potential is wasted because all Sega wants to do with Shadow is have him be the personification of the phrase "I'm better than you" which really just makes him exactly as pathetic as Infinite. His brooding as opposed to Infinite's tantrums just makes that harder to notice.

I know there are some people that don't like mephiles because, "he's just a shadow clone", or that its obvious he's evil because of his voice and I personally disagree. The twist with mephiles wasn't that he was evil but was that he was linked to iblis and was cleverly manipulating the characters so that he could cause an event that could easily have ended the world had sonic's friends not been able to resurrect him, as well as the fact he was involved in the solaris incident. Also he is meant to look like shadow, since he did copy his form when shadow trapped him in the past.

Shadow the hedgehog the game could have been about Shadow not giving a shit about who he is, but being forced to figure out by the arrival of black doom & his entourage. Out of necessity he ends up having to arm himself to even try to fight back, & even has to team up with the wretched g.u.n to save earth from the one eyed threat. Eventually finding out that he was made using Black Doom’s blood & in a way, that he is his father.
The Last Time Shadow was Written Good was in SA2, Sonic Heroes and Sonic 06, SEGA needs to Start Writing their Characters Good again...

I would argue for Rivals 2 being also decent and that in his own game you at least can choose to play as a bearable version (especially in the Japanese version were the scrip doesn't try to be edgier than necessary). And Battle also has some good writing for shadow.

In defense of Shadow's characterization in Shadow The Hedgehog. His philosophy at the end of Sonic Heroes was kind of contradictory. You can't really define who you are, if you know borderline nothing about yourself.
Plus, the entirety of Team Dark's reason for fighting in Sonic Heroes, was not heroic, they were all doing it for personal gain. They were all looking for answers, shadow was more adamant about that, Rough wanted to steal more shit from Eggman, and Omega just wanted to straight up fucking kill him.
I think heroes shadow was alrighty for the most part.
Honestly, heroes tried to conclude it all a bit too early. Not to mention everyone and their grandma point towards that levelintro-scene even tho the last cutscene of heroes darkstory was them still wondering what his deal was. I often say heroes is more dumb than shadow on a conceptlevel, but shadow is more dumb on an execution-level.
Something REALLY WORTH MENTIONING is Shadow's amazing story and interactions with Emerl in Sonic Battle. Super well written in my opinion; I don't think it gets enough credit since Battle is a spin-off (and it's a lot of reading). In short, Shadow is like a foil/mentor to Emerl whereas they were both created to be soulless weapons, and throughout the game they have back and forth on the ethics of their existence. By the end, Emerl through his actions convinces Shadow that, despite the way they were brought into the world, they do have souls and with them they can bring hope to humanity.

As someone who used to be a HUGE Shadow fan, this video really does explain how his character was ruined. Once the games went away from story driven-narratives, that was when Shadow died. He's essentially turned into a Vegeta knockoff and it pisses me off because I remember how amazing his character used to be. Like, people can say what they want about Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 as games, but at least they tried to do things with him! Now he's flatter than cardboard and it makes me want to cry.
I don't think Shadow was "ruined" or "killed" or anything like that. I think a better term would be that he's "underutilized" compared to games like SA2 and 06, which is an unfortunate consequence of the decreassed focus on multiple playable characters.
After Episode Shadow, I'm convinced that what Shadow needs is a main playable story for people to love him again.
Yes, I know about what Sega said but I don't buy it. I think Sega has their opinions and their mandates, but when it comes to the games, it's up to the people who write each installment. Forces has Team Dark and Shadow being concerned about Omega.

sega most definitely has a grip of some *variety* and we know for a fact, that the moment shadow's lead writer left, iizuka made shadow the hedgehog, which - let's face it - were some of the worst showings of his character
@@hihi-nm3uy I refuse to consider what Sega told Ian as a factor because we don't know exactly what the mandates even were. I think how it was executed should be blamed on Ian, I don't think Sega gave him a complete script.
And Shadow is underutilized because of the new mentality of going back into less complicated stuff. Stories more focused on Sonic and Tails than a lot of characters.
And as you said, Shadow didn't go well, that could be why they were so hesitant to give Shadow spotlight until Forces.
@@matti.8465 ian can't have much control if he can't even so much as allow him to take off his rings; let alone decide his personality or role in the plot; besides that, at the bare minimum it does show shadow's being pushed by sega at *some extent, however small,* into being a poor man's vegeta (which in of itself is an insult to a great character arc; both to shadow and vegeta).
additionally, it's been revealed (this video actually brings it up) that shadow can't have friends, and that he works for nobody anymore; and even if we don't take those at face value either, the overarching theme here, is that sega is pulling strings somewhere along the line to make shadow this way.

Modern Shadow suffers from the same issues the other characters suffer from. Flanderization. Ever since 2010 Sega has made character development and personality a low priority in favor of simple writing and cheesy jokes. The lore, story, and character arcs were dropped and we were left with stereotypes instead of actual characters.
Sonic: Cocky hero.
Tails: Tech savvy nerd.
Knuckles: Dumb brute.
Amy: Ditzy female.
Shadow: Edgy rival.
And so on.
Shadow is my favorite character and I like him of who he was. Me and my cousin are huge sonic fans and when the Shadow the Hedgehog game came out we were exited and played it but when it didn't show off his real character we were pissed. Even if Sega changes his character I'll always remember the real Shadow

You and Characters In Depth really changes the way I see Shadow and Team Dark as a whole. I’ve seen Shadow develop and grow, but I’ve never thought about it like this. And I’ve been into this franchise for almost a decade now. This video both made me want to see Shadow as more of a hero than an anti-hero or a complete jerk. And not only did you make me not like how Shadow is now, but you made me hate Boom Shadow even more. You two have really changed my perspective, big time.

When it comes to Shadow's modern portrayal problems, part of why he's turned out the way he has now is because people keep looking at him through the lens of one game from 2005 while simultaneously ignoring almost everything else he's done throughout the series. It's like they looked into his character from that game simply cause his name was on the cover, despite the fact that he'd already been established better in other games. But most people are content with just throwing around some decade old quote on quote "edge" memes that should have died of years ago.

When I was a kid when some one would ask me if you could have a supper power what would it be I would always say chaos control. Also my first sonic game was shadow the hedgehog and was my first and favorite game cube game I was 10 years old back in 2005
Sonic 06 was the last time Shadow was all that relevant.
Even before Pontac and Graf showed up, you got a sense they didn't know what to do with the character. This is an issue that only continues to this day and is perpetrated not just by Sega of America but also by the Japanese writing division as well.

Actually for ones aren't there to blame for the disasters writing of a Character.
There only wrote for Shadow in Generations which was just bland but not character breaking in the slightest, Boom Shattered Crystal which was by far the least offensive version of Boom Shadow and there translated his dialog for Forces which was also far less offensive that Boom, IDW or Team Sonic Racing Shadow as despite of all of its problems he at least had some nice relationships with Rouge and Omega in Episode Shadow and had to ill words towards sonic or any one of the main cast which is more than I can say for the other examples.
While I don't know how is responsable for the mistreatment of Shadow its certainly not Pontaff.

SEGA needs to retcon Shadow's game, make a SA3, where the story explains that Shadow was created in base of the Super Sonic prophecy
No need for the Black Arms, been said that, Shadow's game did explain why Gerald would build the Eclipse Cannon and what exactly was the "accident" in the Ark with the Artificial Chaos
So.... Add those fixes to a new game's story, what about instead of the Black Comet, Gerald made the Eclipse Cannon to battle against Chaos, he must had read about Chaos, after all, he made the Artificial Chaos, or i don't know, maybe just in case of meteorites
