Let me think about this; all analog 33.33 OJCs for $40? Or split up the record into two double LPs in a box for $150. Hard choices 😵‍💫 these won’t work for date night like the 33s

@@Palace_Hi-Fi it was interesting to hear Steve Hoffman’s take on the comparison of 33s versus the 45 double albums and flipping. Sure he has done some himself, be he feels that they really are not that much better and any improvement is marginal at best.

Thanks for the update, Bums 😀
The music on these albums definitely is "must have" for every jazz-interested person: The (for me) best jazz pianist in the best trio he ever had.
What bothers me more with these releases are 3 things:
    1) The music - and thus the listening experience - broken up into 4 sides/parts. I really don't like this "technical over musical" priority (which is wide spread in these years - Atlantic 75-series etc.). This was not the original intention with this album (which is good sounding but not "audiophile").
    2) We were told (by Chad) that the LPs in the Riverside Recordings box set (of these 2 and others) were the best and definitive versions. For that reason I bought the box (great sounding but with some flaws also) when it was announces as last repress.
But now it seems they were NOT the definitive and best versions...
I have no problem with trying to make things (sound) better - but just don't tell us this is "the definitive version", and then come up w. another "definitive version" a few years later. Makes one think: What willl the next definitive version of these albums be? Monos maybe?
    3) And then there is the UHQR-box... What a waste of resources, money and shelf space. Again: Not the original concept (Craft got it right!).
Who the hell came up with the idea: "Hey - let's make it look like some kind of book - that's more classy". But it's not - it's just bloated.
I'd like to add that it's not because I have trouble or can't pay the $150 (my MoFi "Sunday..." cost me considerably more) for a product that reflects the original with a clearly better quality than could be achieved elsewhere. But not for this release because it isn't that.
So I'll ll pass on this - and my advise to others would be to get the new Craft OJC 33 rpm. THAT is the kind of re-relases there should be more of: True to the original, great sounding and very affordable.

Hey guys just like to say I’m a year into getting into jazz and I am really enjoying your show with the three of you. You bounce off each other so well. I don’t do vinyl because I can’t handle the hiss and pop that can come with some older albums I do digital downloads and CD. But your reviews then give me the opportunity to hunt out the album and have a listen on line. Thanks

Thank you for the video! I preordered both albums, a big fan of both. I do own the 45 rpm by AP, LP’s and the box set which I bought because I only had 7 of them on LP. I like the new OJC very much, but I’m excited about this new treatment. The cost is high but it’s worth it for those two albums, still cheaper than the EC. For me, Sunday at the Village is the best Bill Evan’s album, however, as Chad said, those two albums complete each other. I don’t mind getting out of my seat to turn sides, actually, if Bill was alive, I would go watch him play standing the whole time, he is the best!

Would be interested to hear this panel's thoughts as to whether someone really needs a high end audio system to appreciate the quality of these recordings. I'm skeptical that I would with my Music Hall turntable, Denon receiver and Dali bookshelfs.

    • @JazzBums
      @JazzBums  6 місяців тому

I did mention this in the video briefly but I also think that is an overblown concept. I have a Technics 1200 with a 2M blue, a Cambridge preamp, going into a cheap Onkyo amp that powers some affordable Andrew Jones designed Pioneers on my desk. It is a very affordable setup and sounds good to me. It is in my office so isn't meant to be some audiophile wet dream. I have a couple UHQRs and One Steps and they sound great to me. I also have decided that I would not be buying these anymore unless it was just a very special release to me.
Having said all that, I can tell on my setup that the Kind of Blue UHQR sounds better than the Sony Legacy version I had before. I can also tell that I prefer the Miles MOFI stuff compared to a few originals I have. Is my system pulling everything possible out of the grooves? Of course not, but I can still tell if I like the way a record sounds or if I feel like it is missing something. The Time Out AP 45 has WAY more detail than my OG of Time Out for example.
People that say things like another commenter on this video that belittle people based on their listening setup are sad sack losers that have to try to justify their expenditures on their equipment or they are just assholes that hate themselves so much they only get satisfaction in trying to prove to themselves that they are better than someone else in any way possible.
So I guess my point is you don't have to have a $40k setup to enjoy an audiophile record. Will you be able to tell much difference between the OJCs of these titles and the UHQRs? I don't know. I am betting they are pretty close to each other, with the UHQR likely coming out a bit better with super critical listening and maybe the noise floor of the vinyl.

Thanks Bums for an excellent discussion. These records undoubtedly deserve the UHQR treatment and Chad has clearly demonstrated that the results will be astonishing. Take pity on we folk who live outside the US and have to deal with currency exchanges and international shipping. The price will be $300 in my local record store in Sydney, Australia. Not surprised. Hahaha, industry must get somewhat desperate „milking the audiophile cows“ over and over with the same titles. The AP 45s and the OJC reissues are already audiophile grade and sound fantastic to me, with the OJCs offering a superior price value. I find it funny, actually ridiculous that anyone would buy any UHQR or anything like these high end pressings WITH OUT THE HIGH END QUALITY AUDIO EQUIPMENT TO LISTEN TO THEM ON. I'm looking at the stereo equipment in the background of Chris for example and I laugh. His turntable alone would not get the cost of one of these albums in a used sale 😅, then there is the receiver too 😂. Now I'm no mega expensive audiofile owner but my system is light yrs above what 90% of you UA-cam channel VC video makers use and I'm fine with my OG or remastered copies I spin.
