The Jazz Crusaders were from Houston Texas hence the state on the cover.
Ah that makes sense, did not know that. Thanks! - Chris
which Challof Blue Serge on Capitol??
Another great introduction of an upcoming musician, and he comes across so authentic and appreciative that one can only appreciate the result of his and his band mates‘ work, and acquire the record. Many thanks to you all. I only wish that the record was made available in Europe because buying directly from the US is unpermissibly expensive.
Getting 50 year old records 2 weeks early? I’m sure I can wait another 2 weeks and just save money and get the titles I want which is significantly less this year 👌🏻
Felipe, Chris and Mike, I highly recommend you all grab The Jazz Crusaders “Freedom Sound.” I own my Father’s first press copy and its one of my favorites! Their sound here is “Hard Bop Meets Soul Jazz” and this debut cooks!!! The (Jazz) Crusaders patterned themselves after The Jazz Messengers and many of the compositions on this date pays homage to their heroes. @joeharley8396 picked a great Pacific Jazz gem to start off 2025. Chris, the State of Texas is on the cover because the band is from Houston. They formed the group in High School.
I signed up immediately. As Felipe said. No worries about Blue Note for the next year. The exclusives are nice but as you have shown, there are other copies available. It's not the end of the world. It may even reduce my conspicuous consumption knowing that I have locked in new tunes on a monthly basis. At least, I can hope.
The Walter Davis is $38.98 with free shipping. Releases 12/10.
That white Japanese blue note label looks like a promo label. There’s likely a non-promo release at the same time just after a more typical blue label.
Nice survey fellas...deep bow! Fun fact: Sheila Jordan and Duke Jordan were married between 1952-1962.
I think the last thing I subscribed to was a Snowboarding magazine in 1991. lol
Grachan Moncur for sure!
Have the Parker & Turrentine LTs and both are great music. For me - Sunset Eyes, Blue Serge and Flight to Jordan, honorable mention is Half Note Vol 2 solely cause only have Vol 1 bugs the heck out of me.
I don't view the subscription-based model as a sign that vinyl is losing momentum. Tiered subscription models reflect the current trends and their effectiveness. To me, it signals that vinyl distributors are staying attuned to the market and making efforts to adapt, which is a positive thing The certainty of knowing exactly what you're getting (aside from the quarterly exclusives) is a significant advantage. It's also reassuring that consumers retain the option to purchase only the titles that truly interest them. While memberships may pose challenges for brick-and-mortar stores, I hope their impact remains minimal, allowing the mom-and-pop supply chain to continue thriving with a steady flow of products and buyers. There are some great titles on this list! I won't be subscribing, but I will pick up a handful of these titles for the collection.
Agreed, the doom and gloom of vinyl sales plummeting seems premature. I guess everyone expected it to keep growing exponentially like it did during the pandemic or something. While I agree that it sucks for fans outside of the US, I think it is a pretty well thought out subscription service. - Chris
An insult to loads of people overseas that have supported BN. From customers to shops. Based in UK, the BN store is terrible. Never get any discounts. And this is just another brush off. Great 2025 list though 😅
Only a matter of time until they figured out how to go direct to consumer .. I am just going to pick and choose , I don’t need them all and Amazon has free shipping anyway
For me: Parlan, Pepper, Chaloff, Silver, Hamilton
Strange they are doing a hybrid of the struggling VMP. However a big kick in the teeth for the very many UK, European and Other Iinternational loyal customers .
I wait until their parents company has their quarterly sales and yearly monster sale - with free shipping - 20% to 30% off. Way provide your money up front - poor financial management.
A nice presentation of the concept and the releases - well done, Bums 👍 Also nice to see just the 3 of you together 🙂 Living in Denmark/Europa, I'll wait and see what the conditions will be for non-US-buyers (shipping, VAT). And I'm very happy to see that Blue Note hasn't gone "Let's-put-everything-out-on-45-rmp"-crazy with this series but respects the original format. My favorite picks would be • Art Pepper, • Curtis Amy & Frank Butler • and probably Dexter Gordon (must have recorded this just before he moved to Denmark). (got the Horace Silver and Duke Jordan in great soundings Japanese versions already - the would candidate if not). See you - Claus
Thanks for watching Claus!
Exclusivity runs counter to the ethos of Tone Poet imo, but if it keeps the series going I’m for it.
Can't wait to see all the hate videos about this! Like when people sign up to get the exclusives - and then they come out with non numbered editions (to sell to Europe) that can be bought at amazon for $25. I can hear the angry vinyl collectors now! I should make a video bitching about it - it would probably get 20K views!.....🤔
Not a fan of the subscription service idea. But the list of releases is as exciting as ever!
Folks, with the economy, be glad that Tone Poet are not having to make the entire thing a subscription based product. Seems fair to me, different options for all. Very excited about this list! I think its stellar. Thanks for the update guys🎺✌🏻
They have announced a balanced and interesting list, showing exactly what the series is about. Curation, discovery. People can choose either subscribing or buying individuals, so plenty of options. Let's see how distribution will happen. Thanks for watching! F
Why would the economy force them to make their obviously successful series only be subscription only? - Chris
Top 3: Andrew!!!, Some Other Stuff, and Blues in Trinity
Doesnt do any favours for small indie shops (like mine) that have always heavily supported BN since the start of the Tone Poet & Classic series started.
They just did record stores a favor by releasing the classic series as the 85th anniversary
You have the exclusive 2024 B&M/Retail BN85 series, correct? AAA, blue vinyl, and many TOP 25 BN titles (IMO).
@@dustinshaver3173LOL, I just commented the same before I read your reply.
Agree. They knew that silly Blue thing wouldn’t sell well.
I don't understand why Felipe is so flippant about the subscription thing. What about international buyers? They can't go out and buy those exclusive (to Tier subscribers) releases.
Going international presents a challenging logistics, but they are working on it and new should be announced soon. Thanks for watching. F
it could be ok if they keep the free international shipping. or Blue note could make amazon their international distributer
I can’t imagine a worse premium than a phone call from anybody.
Thank you gentlemen!
Chris, that Art Pepper is a promo white label, hence the generic label. Maybe you know but didn't say in video. I have the same copy, and it sounds very good.
Thanks for the info! That makes sense.
Tier 1 makes sense for my buying habits.
The Horace Parlan albums witht the Turrentine brothers are amazing. Stanley is definitely underrated. The sessions that I was really hoping we're coming out although probably more likely to be a classic series or the up at Minton's sessions with Grant Green
The Stanley Turrentine is a great record. Don't sleep on that one!
As always, there are some really cool titles coming up. But I'm definitely not a fan of the exclusive subscriber titles. Like - I guess - most other people I do not have the space, money, interest and listeningtime to buy every single record of this series. I always have and will continue to buy just the titles I'm really interested in. Walter Davis jr. would be one of the titles of interest for me. But now I will not be able to get it. Let alone, I live in Europe...
Tone Poet Society is all fine and dandy (discount, early shipping, merch, autographs, phone calls) OTHER than the quarterly release lockout. That rubs me the wrong way. I'm a huge fan and supporter of the series (and have spent a ton of money on them the past few years), but simply can't afford to buy every title. I have to be selective with my finances which I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. Hopefully the quarterly exclusives are fairly obscure titles and they don't lock highly desirable titles behind the paywall which would just be a bit of a screwing to a majority of the fans.
Same dude. SAME
If you are doing any tier other than highest tier you should be able to choose what tone poets you want.
Insane line-up, especially Montara. I’ve purchased almost every Tone Poet so far so I’ll go Tier 1.
For me, the Pepper, Edwards, Moncure, Chaloff, Jordan and Byrd album releases may be worth considering though, at least two or three of them depending on the reviews.
Interesting! I guess it’s not relevant for TP fans outside America. Maybe Europe is no longer important enough:-) Still it’s a smart business model to plan forward and secure ongoing purchases in the declining vinyl lp market. I will continue to buy only their releases I am excited about with my excitement getting smaller since some time. Is it maybe the swan song of the series? Still, they did an amazing service to us jazz fans which we should be grateful for. Time for reinventing themselves?
International subscription will be added. Thanks for watching! F
Membership model is another sign things are on the way down for vinyl.
That means more for me, for now time to find more space.
What are the other signs?
@@JazzBums💯 Seems the vinyl industry is fine .
really interested in: Blues in trinity Up & down Jacknife Flight to Jordan And the Teddy Edwards I mean if i could I'd buy them all but my budget is limited
I will do the Tier 1 since I get 99% of them in the past.
First…been waiting for this one
Congrats! Another great dive into new artistry and listen to the conceptual depth of diverse music creation. Such kinds of presentations are much more inspiring than listening to another UHQR & co. announcement and review. So glad that you are moving away from those and promote new album issues. I may buy the Brahja album but I am still struggling with the approach of recording individual musicians in different locations and then of computer splicing and mixing the recordings for release on vinyl. Cohesiveness? I.e. the Jerome Sabbagh approach is more of my preference when it comes to vinyl as opposed to digital production and music sourcing. Though, the Brahja cover artwork is amazing.
Fun seeing finds from the FMU fair. haha, would have loved to see Mike arguing with Audiophiliac Steve about how to play mono records.😂
Zorn , love to find his stuff
Sorry I logged off before the movie talk. If you guys ever start “Movie Bums” I’m in.
First comment: Jah Rastafari
Hi Mike, I watched your entire vid and a job well done! I ordered the 1-Step via Analog Productions a few hours ago. Did you use a mono switch or mono cartridge when listening to Frank?
Well, this stream is 9 months old and all of your perspectives are interesting. But something needs to be said if anyone cares. I've spent some time in recording studios, i have a home studio. I have had this exact conversation with other studio guys, and you gotta ask yourself - what was in typical American homes in the 40's and 50's? Tube radios, monaural. The engineers (most of them) did not master for hifi sound, it needed to sound good on a regular radio. Lots of midrange, over AM frequencies. I believe about 1957/58 more care was taken for sonic quality, then guess what? stereo came along. Even then, the average consumer was not receptive of stereo, their entire library was mono and their mono turntable sat on a stand in the corner. It was a background music player. Then the huge consoles came along and they were the center of attention in the listening room. So when you say - the piano was lacking, or the horns were wrong, you're listening to old school on your $5000 turntable and expecting too much.
I have a $500 turntable and can recognize the differences in recording engineers as it relates to recording instruments like the piano around that time period. - Chris
@JazzBums yes Chris, I'm learning so much from the conversations on this channel. It helps to understand the timeline of recording technology as it relates to recording quality. That is why I wouldn't mess with original pre 1957. Reissues are the way to go. Even the mono reissues are in their own category.
