    With ''manual focus'' lenses without hard stops (like the Sigma Art 18-35/50-100), you don't have to recalibrate the lens every time you're using it (only if you swapped the lens and recalibrated the motor). Once you've calibrated the lens, the follow-focus has learned the focus throw of the lens, so even if the gear has shifted, all you have to do is to move the focus wheel through its whole range (hit one end, then go the other side and hit the other end), and the focus range will be back into place (because every time the focus ''ring'' is gone out of range, the true mechanical focusing system is still at one end of its range, regardless of how far you turned it). So as soon as you will start turning the wheel in the opposite direction and hit the other end of the range, it will put the focus range back into place. It would not work with fly-by-wire lenses (only manual lenses, regardless if it has hard stops or not).

      Yes I recently found that out! Definitely a lot easier than I originally thought.

    Best way to calibrate a photo lens with infinity focus rotation is to hold the focus ring when calibrating reach the desired end point then hold again when reach the other end point. Basically you are creating your own hard stop. Good video 🙂👍

    Yup just picked up mine today and got it used here in Japan. Only $250 and it’s a A rated used lens. FYI, this lens is discontinued so get it while you can. The hard stop feature alone is worth it.

    I believe you are misunderstanding the crop factor of your lens. The 17-50 is a Sigma DC lens which means it is designed for apsc sensors and does not crop. The bmpcc 6k's sensor is only slightly smaller, maybe introducing a very slight crop. You are not receiving the the same crop factor as if you were to put canon L series glass designed for full frame cameras. Still a good lens though. Also the smaller sensors are not "cropped" but crop the image by not providing enough surface area for a full frame image circle, this is why the smaller image circle provided by the Sigma DC lenses prevents any crop form happening.

    • @powellfilmmaking
      @powellfilmmaking  3 роки тому

      No, didn’t misunderstand, just didn’t know how to explain it that good! 😂

    • @lee_pfalmer
      @lee_pfalmer 3 роки тому +1

      Powell explained the concept well. Yes a aps-c lens isn’t technically being cropped, but the math is all the same if your reference point for field of view is based on full frame, then regardless of whether a lens is technically being cropped or not, the crop factor math will get you to what you need to know to understand how wide/tight the lens focal length will be compared to those numbers on a full frame camera.
