Didn't even mention the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS, which should probably be the winner as it's a much more useful focal range. Fail.

      I agree with you.
With the 1.6x crop factor of the bmpcc 6k, the 24-70 is pretty useless, as the widest focal equivalent in full frame will be around 40mm…
It can be ok if you shoot very specific type of videos, like dialogues only, or maybe portrait/fashion or food videos with a lot of closeups.
But except that, having an equivalent of 40mm as the widest focal is pretty tricky to work with.

@@truemetsujin there is no logic in comparing to a full frame sensor as both EF and EF-S lens are the same focal length and same FOV for a given lens type on an S35/APS-C sensor size. It's only when you compare back to full frame which is almost pointless in this scenario.

Look into the canon 17-55 f2.8 IS. Used. (It is overpriced new) Especially for run and gun! I used my 18-35 sigma for ages and loved it, but always needed the extra reach than the 1.3 stop of extra light.

@@electronicfellows2113 it depends on what you're shooting. As an all around lens do everything reasonably well but nothing absolutely amazing, the 17-55 is way better than the 18-35 for me. I've used both and love both lenses. But i found myself switching away from the 18-35 for the majority of my run and gun work in the past. Quite often, I've found the image stabilization and reach of a 24-105 f4 to be much more advantageous (even in low light) to the 18-35 f1.8. but for tripod shots, and tons of narrative work, the 18-35 was incredible for me before i sold it.

There’s a lot of people talking about the Canon efs 17-55 2.8 here. I bought that lens and the range is indeed great. HOWEVER, the build quality isn’t and the focus ring is so plasticy and thin that it doesn’t really allow for good focus pulls. I think this is why it isn’t included here. It’s a good budget option but lacks some details to really be used professionally.
Thanks for the overview Epic Light Media!

    • @noth606
      @noth606 10 місяців тому

Old comment but I think your point is more important than many of the comments here factor in, I have the 18-55 efs IS which on paper looks pretty good and is cheap, but at f3.5-5.6 with a terrible focus ring is... um... limited - to put it charitably - in it's use. To me it's close to medium shots, controlled lighting type things where the IS is then less of a boon, but coupled with the focus ring makes it a very tight box to work in. The IS isn't very useful if you're constrained by everything else already to controlled environments only IMO, in which case you might as well use something that opens up more so you can get a bit more selective focus at least. So yeah, it's a lens that isn't "good" at anything, but sort of workable everywhere if nothing else works, like a bad multitool 🙂 it *can do* a lot of things, but you'll want to avoid it and use anything else if you can. I'll run it if I want to try to shoot something I have absolutely no control over because it is applicable to almost any situation(light permitting), but I don't expect the result to be particularly good in terms of "look" no matter what else I do.

I use the Canon 24-105mm a lot and I love it for its range. And if you zoom with an open f4, you don't lose any light. If you close it just to f4.5, it is just as you show: You lose lots of light zooming in.

It's because f/stop doesn't take into account light loss when zooming like T/stop does

The canon 17-55 f2.8 lens is imo, by far, the best lens for the pocket pro if you can find a reasonably priced good condition used one. It has IS, f2.8, light weight, and it replicates the 24-70 lens would look like on a full frame. Yes it is an APS-C lens, but so is the pocket pro.

Bingo. The 15-85, though not a constant aperture, is also VERY well build, with excellent stabilization, beautiful image, and very good focus ring---mine is a bit better than my 17-55. I prefer using them to using my FF Canons.

would 2.8 be the best aperture for strictly indoor videos? or would 1.8 be better?

    • @directoradamg
      @directoradamg 3 роки тому +2

@@electronicfellows2113 so indoor or outdoor, both can benefit from an f1.8 or f2.8 depending on how dark it is, and how much of the frame you want in focus. Just because a lens stops down to f1.8, doesn't mean you should use it there most of the time.
If you need the extra light, f1.8 willbe better than f2.8. but depending on your camera, they are getting more and more sensitive to light that often, i don't have my f stop all the way open.
Sorry i can't give you an overall answer. There are a ton of factors and often the situation you're shooting in will dictate what is best. Indoor is one aspect of many that will dictate which f stop or lens is best for what you're shooting.
Lenses like a zoom lens that has image stabilization, and a lower f stop, will be super useful in the most amount of situations, but wont necessarily be the best for each of those situations. Think jack of all trades master of none.
Based on your questions, you seem to be newer to this, and that's great! Keep asking questions and enjoy yourself. I'd advise you to stay away from the sigma 18-35 f1.8 or canon 17-55 f2.8 for now. If you have an aps-c or super35 camera and want a lens that will cost very little and give you a ton of use, look for the sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS lens. It can be found used for as little as $300 canadian in my area, and is bang for the buck, one of the best entry level all around EF aps-c/s35 lenses on the market, in my opinion.

Correct me if Im wrong, but @3:20, there is a notice about the Canon 24-105 f/4 letting in more light at 24mm than at 105mm. There is a difference in F and T stops, and even thought the lens technically would be at f/4 all through the range, the real concern here should be the T-stop. There is a reason cinema-lenses is measured at T2.8, instead of f/2.8. F denotes the aperture measurements, while T is a measurement of how much light is actually passing through the lens at any given F-stop.

I shot a video on the 6k last year using the following stabilized lenses:
    Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8, and variables:10-18, 15-85, 55-250, 18-135.
My favorite? The 15-85. Clear, sharp, the 55-250 is amazing---i found these lenses, made for APS-C (they've not heavy), have focusing is completely silent, excellent in-lens stabilization, lovely images and color rendition, respectable focus rings----the 15-85 and 17-55 both have very good focus rings---and they don't break the bank.

Would love to see for example how a C500mkii is a 5.9K sensor full frame may be sharper than the same resolution Pocket 6K, due to the C500’s sensor size? Hi man great Video! One question :Right in the middle of upgrading to the 6k pro!
On the pocket 4k I used the Tamron 24-70 with a speed booster and found the range not wide enough with (eq. 34mm) .. on the 6k the 24-70 is even tighter (eq 38mm) how do u feel about that ... That's why I got my eyes on the Tamron 15-30 .. what do u think on the focal range of the 24-70 don't u feel it's to tight ? And would u rather do 15-30 +48mm prime or 18mm prime +24-70 :)
Thanks man the video is really awesome

So you didnt use the 0.64 metabones on the 4k? 24mm should equal 29 with the 1,2x

@@warnjoke I used the viltrox 0.71 speed booster that made my 24 to a 34 equivalent... Wich was just to tight ... That's why I'm asking as he says the best one is 24-70 Wich is 38 mm without a booster on a super 35 ... Wich is even tighter than I had it .. so that's why I asked why the Tamron 15-30 isnt better suited in his opinion :)

Thank you for this awesome video. I am looking to get few of this cameras for live streaming (church on sunday) and I was looking for some options for lenses. We already have 70-200 f4 and 24-105 f4. But I am looking for a lens if there is an option in the 20-300 mm range. I know this kind of lens is slow, but having this focal lengths at least for one camera would be good. (for now we are using GH5's but I would like to transition to blackmagic cameras paired with Atem mini extreme ISO)

@@sergiubn What you're looking for sounds more like an ENG lens. Adapting that to this camera might not work very well, but the URSA Broadcast is made to mount one. In my opinion you would run into more trouble trying to use a still lens in this range. I also understand that your budget might not allow for that.

Few more that I've tested. The Canon EF L 24-70 f4. I.S on that one is great as is the image. Better than the 24-105. It's cheap too.
    Mega cheap (£200) canon EF-S 10-18 I.S. Very light , variable aputure. (F4.5-5.6)
    Also, the canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 I.S.

Hello from the future! Every lens mentioned is now obsolete when it comes to stabilization (although they're still great lenses), as the BMPCC 6K Pro (as well as 6K and 4K) now have internal gyroscopic stabilization that (in my humble opinion) is vastly superior to any lens stabilization. However, for it to work, you have to disable the lens stabilization...

Yeah, obviously the fstop changes when you zoom on a stills lens. You need a constant aperture tstop lens for cinematography.

I disagree here. As with the BMPCC test which you rated the original battery grip at 1 hour (which is 2 hours really, I own it and use it all the time and habe tested it) the Sigmas are optically beautiful lenses but their OS is not smooth at all for video. While we appreciate these tests and fun videos the informations should be more accurate. After testing these lenses too I find the original 24-105 L lens to have the most natural IS for handheld shooting.
