🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

You got me when the mom said her children don’t need the neck rings 😢😊
The name is Best Ever Food Review Show, however, it’s a lot more than that. It’s a cultural and educational well made fun and interesting show that also has food reviews. Well done BEFRS.
Agree and his positive attitude and willingness to learn really shines through and translates to others even if they don't speak the same language.
He needs his own tv show!
@@maramarquez6988 he tried but didn't get one. Idk why you people want him to have a show, when this is free and has higher quality than everything on television

That lady is so sweet and smart. I love how she gave her daughters the choice to do what they'd like. Also that sausage looked amazing
That made me realize that those women may be the last of a dying breed.

I love how sausage appears all across the world in so many food cultures. Could be interesting to do a show on these types of foods that are so recognisable and link (no pun intended) us all because no matter how different we our, food brings us together
Actually the sausage in that region can be very spicy but totally delicious! I've met the Karen people and it was amazing so much better than sitting in a bar getting drunk with several cuties hanging on!
no rise flatbread, minced meat patties, sausage made with intestines, stew and soup and forms of food every almost every single culture shares
Sunny is different than any other food vloggers. He doesn't only talk about food to us, but tell us about the cultural background of a community, which I love the most. He does his homework, and he delivers. Surely, wanna see you shine more on this platform, and people around the world know you as a "best ̶f̶̶o̶̶o̶̶d̶ reviewer"
Indeed
Mark Wiens does a similar job also..
This is the main reason why I love this show. It’s a food show mixed with anthropology and history with a sprinkling of comedy.
@@debbiemarquis3231 I watch him sometimes, but as far I've seen, he never tries exotic food, and doesn't really communicate with the locals much.
Agreed. He also shows a great amount of respect. Unlike a lot of other food vloggers that does it for clout.
This is my stress buster every weekend. Such a humbling experience to see something new, some new culture, some new normal, some new struggle every week. Thank you. This is way past a food show.
Well said.
Name of the first song
When I was there about 30 years ago, we went to a Kayenne village in Thailand. It was where they lived and they were not selling things in the village. You did have to pay to go in.
Because we were interested in learning about their culture and not just there to take pictures and leave, many sat with us and talked to us. We even played games with the children.
At that time, the Thai government was charging them to live there, but would not allow them to work or farm. The entrance fee into the village went to the Thai government to allow them to stay there and to go to the Kayenne people in then Burma to fight the Burmese military who were murdering them (which was way they had fled Burma). They would make crafts and go into town to sell them or allow travellers and tourists to take photos for a fee, to earn a living. It was the only thing the Thai government would allow them to do (and it gave the Thai government money as they were a draw for travellers and tourists)
They told us they had to flee Burma (now Myanmar) because the Burmese government was coming in and taking their men to be slaves to be in the military, or they would just kill them. So they fled for their lives.
When we asked them about the history of the rings, they said that many years ago, when their enemies would make war, the men were harder to capture, but because the women would be fleeing with children, it was easy to catch the women and kill them, which was done by cutting them at the neck. So the women began to wear the rings to protect themselves. Over time, it became a thing of beauty. And the longer the neck, the more beautiful they were deemed. They began to add rings to their legs and arms, too.
Some do remove the rings if they become ill or convert to Christianity. Their necks are not weak.
It is quite a process to put on the rings or take them off, as they have to heat them slowly to make them pliable to manipulate them, while not injuring them.
Some Burmese fled to Thailand others to India.
Thanks for the incredible history lesson, I was wondering where was the men in the village, Sonny failed to cover that.
Thank you. Very interesting history indeed
It is from Myanmar originally
Appreciate your efforts. I always wondered if their necks were weakened by this practice. To my eyes, it looks like they're ready to snap.
She’s so gentle and graceful
She exudes class ❤
Food looks really inviting and yummy 🤤
Whoever chose the song at the end that started with the lyrics "Help me decide, whether to climb the hill, or shoot for the moon" right after this amazing woman told the story of deciding she wanted her kid(s) to have a normal life in comparison to what she went through, deserves a raise. The editing and videography on this channel are amazing, but the soundcrew in all respects are absolutely incredible too. Thanks, yet another very emotional food experience over here for me.
whats the ending song? i cannot find in credits. sounds wonderful

It made me shed some tears which I never expected to do on a food channel
@Thomas The Fap Engine is English, 30-40yoa, likes w@ank and fart jokes with a few beers at his local. Am I right?
Sonny this video is one reason Anthony Bourdain would have been proud of you. Yes you still feature the food but you mix the culture and history of people into the videos so well. This is the reason your channel has grown so much. There is no other food and travel related channel that I would rather watch. Also I get it that your team helps make it special. Keep it up guys.
You know 😊 I’m just gonna say it. Ndebele
Beautiful Asian descendants from their beautiful African grandmother’s
It just is what it is. No one wants to be black but I’ll just say most of us have a black grandma in the closet. This was solid Sonny
I feel good about it. I needed to smile today 😎
I agree with this. The production of this is so interesting- the beautiful and thoughtful way it has been edited combined with Sonny's narration. It is about food, but also so much more than that. I always feel like Sonny's videos, while about food, are more about the unique human experience and how drastically different that can be across the globe. I always felt much the same about Anthony Bourdain.
These people were SOOOOO GRACIOUS to this White foreigner. Did he pay them any money for this experience, interview, and agreement to post this on UA-cam???? Hope he compensated them with a lot money. They deserve it.
Mlee is such a beautiful soul inside and out, you did a great job Sonny respecting their culture and entertaining us as well! You guys really are the best ever food review show.
I would love to see the connection between these Asian tribes that wear long neck rings and the African tribes that have the same traditions. Two totally different continents so far away from eachother, yet they both have the same long neck rings. Check out the Ndebele women and you will see the similarities between them and the Karen women.
That would be Great!!!!!👍👍

I agree. I envy the drive and will to explore as he does. Grateful I can see different cultures.
Sonny is a modern day Anthony Bourdain. I never thought there would be anyone that could fill Anthony's shoes. Writing about the foods, and the cultures. Thank you Sonny for taking us into rare places that are seldom experienced.
Dude you have a point
I love him because he doesn’t do weird facial expressions whenever he tastes something
nothing beats the food reviews/educational vids of diff cultures off this channel. always so respectful and overall produced so well. keep up the work
I don't know if calling the way they earn a living as "A human zoo" is respectful.
I think my favorite part of these videos is how proud people are to share their food and see your reaction .
That first dessert/meal is actually very common around SE Asia. In the Khmer/Cambodian culture, it's called Num Ansom, and banana is my fav filling. It can also be filled with seasoned pork, or chickpeas. The Chinese also have a variation of the dish.
One of the things that I love the most about this channel (and the other channel) is that, yes, it explores different foods from different cultures around the world, but also the unfiltered and uncensored expressions that you deliver. Hats off to you and your amazing team! ❤️
I've watched an old documentory about these rings. The rings were firstly introduced as a protective device against tiger attacks as tigers go for the neck when hunting. Later it became fashion.
It was a really old documentory that I watched 15 or something years ago and Now after reading a lot of comments I don't know if it was just a made up story.
honestly i think it's barbaric in the truest sense of the word
Interesting information thanks
@@ryann8806 I think it's cultural. What one culture perceive as fashion may be barbaric to another culture.
And vampires, obviously.

Hello down there from the U.S.A.! You're lucky to be in such a culturally vibrant region. So many nations coming together! I'd be so happy to visit South Africa some day, it's among the top three countries I'd love to experience. Generally, people from America assume that S.A. is nothing but apartheid and crime, but I know that isn't true. It's really shocking that Sonny hasn't been there yet, there's so much crazy diversity that I'm sure people would be begging to see!
@@MadamFoogie South Africa 🇿🇦 is such a beautiful place with different foods, cultures, music, lifestyle, your right.... So many nations coming together, its different. The experience is different. My husband and I make this a weekly watch. We love it.
I’m obsessed. I’ve been to this village, and felt the same conflict. I’m completely besotted with your channel; it’s fantastic, thank you so much for your humour and respectful approach.
One of my favorite things about Sonny and this channel is that he's exposing all of us to these cultures, but he always has an open mind even when they are obviously odd and hard to comprehend. Can't stress how important this type of content is for everyone to have a better appreciation of the human race.
Agreed. He should call himself an anthropologist instead of a food reviewer. Even without the degree, he knows far more about human cultures than any average individual.
Sonny is such a generous soul... How you have opportunities to even come into the different cultures you encounter and love and appreciate their customs and translate all of it to us is amazing 😍.. love you man for everything you do and every word you say
This is not just a food review channel for me they are showing verious community culture and traditions and their foods 😘😘😘
It’s really nice to learn other cultures this way, food is always the heart of a culture. Thank you for showing us.
Calling this show the "Best Ever Food Review Show" is an understatement. ❤️
I remember watching this channel a few years ago as just a food video channel. I can't believe how far it has come. At this point it is a very well developed cultural documentary. Big respect
i love how asias and mexicos food are so darn similar but yet with slight change of ingredients but same method of cooking its awesome love this show
when you look at their faces. You just see the beauty of humanity and peace.
Went to the Karen village back in 2005 when I travelled with my wife who’s Thai.
We had a lovely time chatting with one of the elders as she showed us around the village. Very relaxed time. Lovely people. Very hospitable
@Sterling Archer yes, but there’s a difference when you have a thai person with you who speaks the language and sits and chats for hours. Thai people don’t tend to go on the tours. I’m saying when my wife who is Thai says they seem very genuine there’s a difference between Mr tourist going on a human circus parade.
I love how Sonny approached this episode. He and his team are really on a roll. Top tier!

They were the most calm person and I loved their culture.
I appreciate the discussion of the feeling like they are being exploited but also understanding how it helps them. Sonny is a genuine human being and kind to these people.
Sonny....you really let us see the cultures of the peoples you visit. Its not only just about the food but just day to day lives. But some of the food does look amazing. What an amazing experience!
The last part made me cry .. Sonny this channel is not just the food review place for me. Getting to know these cultures and the people, Understanding theire way of living is amazing experiance. Glad to be your subscriber!!
This is one of the best episodes. It is a good documentary, not just a food show. This makes you think about life and social norm. Both Sonny and the editors did a great job
I love this channel so much. Not only do we get to see amazing food, we get to learn about all these different cultures and ethnicities that I never knew existed. This video made me emotional for some reason.
Thank you for your transparency around this experience
Wow I never realized how the Kayan sausage is made. I have had the Kayan sausage before. It became popular in burma in past 5-6 years. Happy that they are able to preserve their food, culture and livelihood in Thailand after fleeing the conflict in burma. It’s a good thing cos if they didn’t have this in Thailand, their race would have been completely eradicated by the civil war in burma.
Most of them left in Pan Pat(The village of Padaung tribes)

I like how Sonny broaches questions with honesty yet with respect and sensitivity.
The tribespeople are so nice and unique in their culture. Its amazing how old customs never go away in a very modern world.
Sonny, this was one of the most impressive vids from you. It's so double in feelings. I've studied tourism, and ofcourse also read and learned about the long neck tribes. But to see it in this way is almost saddening me. Such a beautiful culture on the one side, but just a charade in the other. Thank you for showing us this part too. Keep up your good work in making us amazed and smiling.💜
It seems to me that people from Egypt to Jamestown make a living from such displays. It's only been 30 years, hopefully this will keep them well until they integrate into their new home.

It's their culture & lifestyle. Let them enjoy it & prosper. If it helps them to run their life & living, better for them, so be it. Thanks Sonny, for sharing the life & culture of the Karen tribe with the rest of the world.
I couldn't agree more! As long as they're happy then that's all that matters! I personally think they are BEAUTIFUL and I respect their culture 100% 🖤🖤🖤
Totally agree. They also have rights to choose how they want to live. It's not like Thai people and Thai government are against them either, otherwise they won't even be able to work there in the first place. Being able to make enough income to support their children's education as immigrants in a foreign country is already a huge feat.
I love watching Sonny’s videos! Some are more about food and others are more about the culture of the people and their way of life! This one (I’m not going to lie had me in tears)! It honestly shows how people learn to adapt to different countries yet still keep the ancestors memories and way of life alive! I may have mentioned this before, but this is really starting to dip into the realms of Bizarre Foods in the best way possible. Yes, it is mainly focused on experiencing a culture through their food, but it also showcases local customs and lifestyle in a respectful and curious way. Serious Andrew Zimmern vibes in the way you guys approach locals with a sense of reverence and your attitude is reflected in the openness and kindness shown by your hosts; not everyone who travels (yes, Americans have a reputation for a reason, sadly) is as kind and their experiences are not as welcoming and wonderful. Thank you for treating everyone like human beings and respecting their cultures rather than a sideshow at a carnival to be mocked because they are different. This would absolutely be my dream job, but I can settle for living vicariously through you and your amazing team.
What a powerful video you guys made.
