If you asked me my general thoughts on The Phantom Menace a few years ago, I could give you a solid handful of positives regarding the film. A couple of those elements would be the Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan versus Darth Maul lightsaber duel, the castings of Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn and Ewen McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the great John Williams score. However, what I often thought of first when I heard “The Phantom Menace” was mostly negative. From making Anakin a child to the Jar Jar Binks character to the uneven pacing of the film, I would’ve gone negative on the film. Well, now I would go positive on the film. What’s interesting about this is that all of the after mentioned positives still stand, but most of the negatives I would still hold against the film. Now, I see The Phantom Menace as a flawed piece of art. I may not love everything being painted on the canvas, but there’s absolutely an artistic expression there. Now, when I think about The Phantom Menace, I think about how George Lucas poured his heart and soul into the making of the film, not about not liking the plot point of young Anakin creating C-3PO. I think that’s what can make media great. The movie or song might not change at all, but you can look at it on different levels and view points as time passes. I think that’s awesome.

It’s not perfect, it’s got a good number of flaws and stumbles, like Anakin and Padme, Jar Jar (who I don’t think is even bad really), but I’ve always liked this movie. Blame the bias. Blame the nostalgia, but this movie was always cool to me. There are still at least some memorable sequences and set pieces, the lightsaber duels go harder than anything previously, and the casting is pretty neat too.
The worldbuilding and lore is given much more attention, and while the politics always seem “boring,” At least it added a new aspect to the Star Wars universe not previously seen, as well as the inner workings of the Jedi. Not a perfect movie, but no where even close to bad imo. 7/10 overall as far as I go.

It raised the bar. It's not “of it's time,” the movie ESTABLISHED the new era of VFX. The technology had to get better for the movie to work, so they DID that!

The Phantom Menace is a masterpiece and an important movie in the Star Wars universe. The Phantom Menace lays the foundations for the Star Wars universe. From the Galactic Republic to the Jedi, Sith and Padawans, the film plunges us into a rich and complex world. It also introduces iconic characters such as Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala and, of course, Anakin Skywalker. The movie tackles profound and important themes such as politics, corruption, power and destiny. For example, the rise of the Trade Federation and its blockade of Naboo illustrate the struggle for control and political manipulation. The Phantom Menace is above all the story of Anakin Skywalker, the chosen one destined to bring balance to the Force. His introduction as a young slave on Tatooine to his meeting with Qui-Gon Jinn represents the beginning of his journey into light and darkness. The movie is packed with memorable, iconic scenes. From the pod race on Tatooine to the final duel between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul, and the epic battle of Naboo, every sequence is carefully orchestrated. The Phantom Menace also expands the saga's universe by introducing new worlds, races, technologies and concepts. The planet Naboo, for example, offers a striking contrast to the more austere settings of Tatooine and Coruscant, while the Gungans, Dugs and Toydarians bring a new dimension to the livelier, more populated and more diverse Star Wars universe. The menacing shadow of the Sith hangs over the entire movie, foreshadowing Darth Sidious's rise to power and Anakin's ascent to the dark side of the Force, giving full meaning to the title of The Phantom Menace. The presence of Darth Maul embodies this imminent threat and adds a dimension of danger. George Lucas draws on many religious traditions to shape the Star Wars universe, and The Phantom Menace is no exception. The Jedi are warrior monks who follow a strict moral code and are dedicated to protecting peace and justice in the galaxy. Their belief in the Force, a mystical energy that permeates everything, reflects concepts of spirituality and universal connection. For example, the scene in which Qui-Gon explains the Force to Anakin is imbued with an almost religious atmosphere, reinforcing the importance of this belief in the Star Wars universe.
The Phantom Menace highlights the dangers of a corrupt and manipulative government that controls the masses to serve its own interests. The Trade Federation, under the influence of Darth Sidious, imposes a blockade on Naboo to force Queen Amidala to sign an unjust treaty. This political and economic manipulation recalls real-life themes of tyranny and oppression, giving the movie a profound social resonance. The pod race on Tatooine is one of the most memorable sequences in The Phantom Menace. Beyond the spectacular action, this scene symbolizes adventure and self-transcendence. Anakin, a young slave, defies expectations and takes risks to save his family and fulfill his destiny. The race is a mixture of adrenalin, suspense and courage, showing the determination and talent of our future hero. The Phantom Menace also offers an epic adventure in a futuristic setting, with interstellar travel, advanced technologies and exotic worlds. This combination of science fiction and classic adventure is reminiscent of George Lucas's signature narrative style. The film's visual universe, from the sprawling cities of Coruscant to the arid deserts of Tatooine, is immersive and captivating, transporting viewers to a distant galaxy full of possibilities. The Phantom Menace also lays the foundations for the prophecy of the chosen one, a central concept in the Star Wars saga. Anakin Skywalker is presented as the chosen one destined to bring balance to the Force. His introduction as a young slave on Tatooine to his meeting with Qui-Gon Jinn represents the beginning of his journey towards fulfilling this prophecy. For example, the scene in which Qui-Gon recognizes Anakin's exceptional potential and decides to take him under his wing evokes the theme of destiny and the inescapable fate of the chosen one. The Phantom Menace explores the complexities of political power and manipulation. The rise of the Trade Federation under the influence of Darth Sidious and its blockade of Naboo trigger a political crisis that threatens the stability of the Galactic Republic. This complex political intrigue, with its shifting alliances and secret maneuvers, gives the movie a depth and relevance that resonates with real-world problems. The Phantom Menace establishes many coherent links with the original Star Wars trilogy, enriching the saga as a whole. For example, the introduction of Darth Sidious as Senator Palpatine lays the foundations for his rise to power and transformation into a tyrannical emperor in subsequent episodes. Similarly, Qui-Gon Jinn's mentoring of Obi-Wan Kenobi foreshadows the master-apprentice relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin that plays a central role in the rest of the saga.

I was around 7. I still remember seeing the double bladed lightsaber and thinking it was the coolest thing. My parents took me to see the re-release of Empire (in 97 or 98?) in theaters, they had a guy dressed as Boba Fett standing around the theater with his blaster. I'm in the same mindset as Cobra Kai Kid. I was born in 2001 and grew up watching Episodes 1-6 constantly and didn't separate them as the original and prequel trilogies. They were all just George Lucas Star Wars, and I personally just always enjoyed the prequels and characters like Anakin much more than the original movies. Not to say I don't obviously love the original trilogy. For me, The Clone Wars animated series is my favorite canon Star Wars content followed by the prequels, originals, then stuff like Rogue One, Rebels, etc. The sequels I definitely do not like, and it's super depressing to see the direction that the franchise has gone under Disney. We still get some good stuff every now and then like The Bad Batch and Andor, but we have definitely fallen into that Disney trap of quantity over quality, especially in the past few years

I think it’s an okay Star Wars movie that’s heavily elevated by Duel of the Fates and Liam Neeson, and tainted due to young Anakin and Jar Jar. However, at the core of it is an actual heart. It’s not a corporate product, it’s a chapter to a story someone thought was worth telling. So it has its flaws and high points, but it’s actually rewatchable because of the work George Lucas put into it.

From the perspective of someone who was 15 when Ep 1 came out and saw it again in the theater last week, what struck me was how bad Pernilla August was as Shmi.
Jake Lloyd was really not too bad as Anakin given his age. He was really a pretty typical child actor and does bring some nice heart to the film. Considering how mediocre even Ewan McGregor’s and Natalie Portman’s are in the film he is not that far away.
Jar Jar is still bad but at least somewhat tolerable now that I have been desensitized to it.
Liam Neeson is the star of the film and is the only one that really brings acting skill to the movie.

Star Wars is my all time favorite franchise!!! As someone who was born in 1998, that's just 1 year BEFORE Phantom Menace was first ever released in theaters, that's a jackpot!
Me and my cousin are Star Wars fans ever since we watched the VCD version of Episode II in 2002 and at the time, the two of us are 4 years old back in 2002!!
Fast forward to 2004 on my 6th birthday, I got three action figures and those are Darth Vader, Jango Fett, and my personal favorite R2-D2!
I got to tell you guys! I fell in love with Star Wars because of R2-D2!
Moving on to 2005 was the first time ever me and my cousin watched Revenge of the Sith in theaters!!! That was an amazing memory!!

More physical props were used for Episode 3 alone than the entire Original Trilogy. In fact, The Phantom Menace actually has fewer visual effects shots than The Force Awakens.

I see now that the most positive thing the sequels did for the star wars fandom is help people jump off bandwagons and actually give their honest opinions of star wars. This comment section is endless of people giving phantom Menace praise, and commending it for how "great" it is. People actually do love this movie. But 7-10 years ago, comments like these did not exist....like anywhere...At all. It was all bandwagon hate, you could tell because all the comments seemed like it was all the exact same person writing criticism of choreography being bad, to much cgi, jar jar, hayden and sand.
Phantom Menace and the rest of the prequels as well were enemies of reddit, youtube, everywhere. And if you even liked the prequels you were a minority that that was considered to be "not true star wars fans." I was called that many times.
Discovering that kind of hatred was damaging to me as a young teen. I grew up not showing any partiality to George's 6 film saga. There was no difference in quality between Phantom Menace and A New Hope. Empire was just has fun and exciting as Attack of the Clones, I had every single VHS and none of them were bad in my little innocent eyes.... Then i grew up and the internet barged into my life and i learned that the world actually hated HALF of my beloved star wars saga. Even return of the jedi got tons of hate back then.
Because of this experience i will never trash the next gen for liking sequels. Im not a big fan of them, but im sure there will be fanbase for then soon if theres not already.
I like force awakens. I think last jedi is a missed opportunity. Rise of skywalker is fun but messy.

I’ve had an interesting relationship with Phantom Menace at first I wasn’t a big fan of it and mind you I was like six years old then I like fell in love with the prequels because of the light saber duels, which I still love but then actually around the time when rise of Skywalker was about to come out and I rewatch some of the Star Wars movies leading up to it the prequels moved down in my Ranking I’ve used to like it more than the original, but really besides some of the action a lot of the other stuff especially the dialogue I kind of find very dull and I still like the prequels and honestly after seeing them at the May 4 marathon last week I do like them a little bit more but I don’t think they’re great and honestly with the sequels. I actually don’t appreciate the prequels More if anything it makes me less because with the sequels, I actually feel like they actually had good dialogue. Honestly, I will go one step further and say awesome acting and dialogue and I think the action is very good and I do not think they destroyed my childhood. I personally like the sequels a lot I used to have them as my favorite trilogy for Star Wars But now, thinking about it. The original trilogy is clearly my favorite so all three Star Wars trilogies were my favorite at one point in my life however honestly as a 15-year-old my ranking of the Star Wars trilogies from best to worst goes the OG the sequels then the prequels I actually enjoy all Star Wars movies with a lot of the criticisms that the sequels ruined Luke’s character. I honestly think attack of the clones was way bigger offender with that with Anakin now I don’t think it destroyed Vader however, I really kind of hated what they did with Anakin in attack of the clones also, I think the legacy characters were done well in the sequels, and I would kind of argue with the grave with that, so yeah, love the originals love the sequels like the prequels but yeah, I actually think the prequels have become slightly overrated overtime.

George Lucas's Star Wars prequel trilogy is a pure masterpiece, a wonderful, magnificent, exciting, significant, and extremely rich work that has greatly contributed to the story, universe, characters, lore, and mythology of Star Wars. They are the best, the greatest films of all time, a great cult and exciting trilogy from start to finish. It's the Star Wars as George Lucas always wanted it to be. It's the best Star Wars trilogy, the greatest Star Wars trilogy, the richest, most accomplished, most complete, the best period; everything is superb: the deepening of the Star Wars universe and its narrative elements are superb and exciting, and it explores in detail the period of the Clone Wars, a crucial moment in Star Wars history. A fundamental and exciting turning point. The Clone Wars period is the best period of Star Wars. The fascinating plot that unfolds throughout the films. The rise of Palpatine, Darth Sidious, is masterfully depicted. His behind-the-scenes machinations to undermine the Galactic Republic and bring the galaxy under his control are meticulously presented. His manipulation to form a massive clone army and eradicate the Jedi with Order 66 is a central element of the story, explaining how the Galactic Empire took shape following the fall of the Republic and how Anakin fell to the dark side to become Darth Vader, a fallen hero who just wanted to save those he loved. Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader is a superb, memorable, breathtaking scene. The connection with the original trilogy is very well done. Anakin's internal conflict between his loyalty to the Jedi Order and his desire to save those he loves makes his story deep and tragic. His journey to the dark side, with key moments such as his confrontation with Count Dooku and his heartbreaking final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. The prequel trilogy also brought invaluable richness to the Star Wars universe, with a detailed look at the Jedi Order, Padawan training, Sith, combat mastery, and Jedi teachings. The spotlight on the Sith and their philosophy strengthened the dark side of the Force, adding depth and complexity to the saga. The political aspect of the prequel adds a new dimension to the Star Wars universe, with Palpatine's machinations in the Galactic Senate and growing tensions between planetary systems, creating a richer context for the later events of the Original Trilogy, the rise of the Empire, the fall of the Republic, the extinction of the Jedi, and Anakin Skywalker's tragic story. The expansion of the universe is also great. New planets, races, creatures, peoples, and cultures are introduced, contributing to creating a larger and more diverse world. Iconic locations such as Kamino, Geonosis, Utapau, Felucia, and Mustafar provide visually captivating backdrops for action scenes, development, and key plot moments. Beloved and iconic characters, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, General Grievous, Jango Fett, Watto, Sebulba. The action scenes and lightsaber battles are among the most memorable in the saga. Epic battles such as the Battle of Geonosis, the podrace on Tatooine, the Battle of Naboo, and the battle above Coruscant are very memorable and iconic of the saga. The lightsaber duels between iconic characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul, and Yoda are executed with exceptional choreography, adding a visceral dimension to the story. The prequel also enriches the Star Wars lore with new charismatic and endearing characters, unforgettable music, "Duel of the Fates," "Across the Stars," "Battle of the Heroes," a super rich, exciting, and comprehensive lore, and a talented cast of actors, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Liam Neeson. Natalie Portman is superb, magnificent, sweet, sensual, and charismatic, giving her character Padmé Amidala queen and senator of Naboo an exemplary strength, determination, and courage. She's perfect, she's iconic. Her evolution from a queen to a senator, into a badass, elegant, and determined woman, is a central characteristic of the trilogy. Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson bring memorable class and presence to the screen. Their dynamic as Jedi Masters is palpable, and they convey a wisdom and determination that anchor the story in the Jedi legacy. Additionally, Christopher Lee's presence as Count Dooku adds a touch of class, elegance, and charisma, amplified by his Shakespearean speech. The prequel was the rejuvenation of the Star Wars saga, bringing real dramatic scope, real political context, stakes, new superb and iconic characters, iconic action scenes, a much richer universe, a more developed, more diverse universe, and a much more extensive universe. It expanded the lore of the saga, and complements the original trilogy being inseparable from it. The Star Wars prequel is a masterpiece, and the Star Wars trilogy is a masterpiece and together form an incredible whole, a single great story of exceptional galactic epic. The story of Anakin Skywalker, from his Jedi training to his fall to the dark side of the Force to his redemption as a Jedi by saving his son, destroying the Sith, and restoring balance to the Force. The story of the Galactic Empire, once a democratic Republic, and the story of Palpatine, his evolution from senator to chancellor to becoming the emperor of the galaxy, his manipulations to establish his authority in the senate, to create his own Galactic Empire, to overthrow the Jedi Order, and to keep Anakin with him as an apprentice. and the technological advancement towards digital, modern technologies, computer editing, special effects, to create new worlds, new extraordinary and extraordinary world-building, new peoples and to build the extraordinary story of the Star Wars prequel, a true expanded, gigantic, extremely rich universe, with infinite possibilities, exploring new planets, new peoples, new civilizations, new technologies, new worlds, just like Avatar.

Always loved this movie and will never understand the hate it gets. The planet, vehicle, lightsaber, costume, and sound design are all phenomenal. The soundtrack is a masterpiece and I love the filmic look it has compared to the other 2 prequels. Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul are GREAT characters, the city of Utoh Gunga, the underwater escape from the killer fish, getting to see Anakin's day-to-day life with his mother, the Podracing sequence,
getting to see the Republic capital Coruscant for the first time along with the Jedi Council and Galactic Senate in session, Queen Amidala showing respect to the Gungans and uniting the two races, the epic climax with the land battle between the Gungans and Battle Droids, the space battle where little Anakin kicks ass, Padme and Captain Panaka infiltrating the Throne Room and arresting the Viceroy, the Duel of the Fates, Qui-Gon's funeral, Yoda and Obi-Wan discussing Anakin's future, and finally the beautiful victory celebration.
It's the 5th best Star Wars movie after the Original Trilogy and Revenge of the Sith.

I think I had a rare experience when it comes to Star wars I grew up in the prequel era but I had a freind in primary school (elementary) who was obsessed already into star wars and brought in the original trilogy on VHS tapes so I was able to watch the originals before the prequels and always love the OGS way more although I still loved the prequels and were flawless to me at the time.

My take aways seeing it in the theatres for the first time: 1) Pod race was amazing on the big screen 2) Jar jar made me actually laugh for the first 15min he was in the movie, but then I really noticed how annoying he became quickly 3) The false queen reveal was confusingly done for some reason, I remember it being even more confusing when I was a kid. 4) I was more engaged with the political scenes now than as a kid.

I liked the fast choreography but I wish that there was less close up shots of the fighting. Example when Dooku and Anakin are doing their showy movies and they are being lits by the sabres. It takes aeay from all thay training thr actors did imo. Its cool to see the Jedi in their prime but that Dooku battle really suffers from not allowing more time for each character to fight. They tried to make the dynamics more about the characters fighting and less about the environment. That was what was so brilliant about the Vader/Luke battle in Empire, it was so expansive.

Have to dissagree on your pitch for obi wan, qui gon and anakin pitch. I'd argue that having qui gon jin enriches the anakin and obi wan relationship because it builds it off to a rocky start because obi wan was never supposed to train anakin in the first place. So you have a brother figure reluctantly trying to train someone under the request of his dying master who both see as a father figure. Anakin tries to see obi wan as that figure, but doesn't fully work because they are more brothers.

I have soured on Attack of the Clones a little bit, but the other two prequels I still really enjoy watching. I always felt people were too hard on them. But now that people like me are getting older, who saw them as kids, public opinion is swinging back in their favor.

Star Wars The Phantom Menace is much more than a science-fiction film for George Lucas. It's a deeply personal work that reveals his recurring themes, his malaise, his past experiences and his political convictions. To understand it, you also need to understand George Lucas' background.
First of all, the theme of the struggle against oppression and tyranny is omnipresent in George Lucas' work.
In THX 1138, George Lucas depicts a dystopian society where the government exercises totalitarian control over the population, a theme that is also found in The Phantom Menace. In both films, this control is embodied by an authoritarian regime that closely monitors its citizens, creating a climate of fear and oppression. In THX 1138, this surveillance is manifested through security cameras and flying drones, while in The Phantom Menace, it takes place through corrupt government bodies, such as the Galactic Senate infiltrated by Palpatine.
What's more, in both films, citizens are subjected to tight control over their emotions and behavior. In THX 1138, inhabitants are forced to take drugs to suppress their emotions, while in The Phantom Menace, Jedi are forced to follow the Jedi code, which forbids them to express emotions such as anger and passion. This control of emotions reflects the government's desire to maintain order and stability at all costs, even at the expense of individual freedom.
Moreover, in both films, individual freedom is stifled by a system of strict control. In THX 1138, inhabitants are assigned to specific jobs and roles in society, with no possibility of choice or autonomy. Similarly, in The Phantom Menace, the Jedi are assigned to specific missions and are subject to the authority of the Jedi Council. This lack of personal freedom reinforces the government's control over the population and creates a sense of powerlessness and despair among the inhabitants.
The parallels between The Phantom Menace and THX 1138 demonstrate the continuity of George Lucas' preoccupations with totalitarian control and government oppression across different contexts and fictional universes. These recurring themes illustrate George Lucas's insight as a filmmaker and his commitment to exploring the dangers of authoritarianism and the loss of individual freedom.
George Lucas' concern about the rise of authoritarian regimes during the Cold War is reflected in both films, illustrating his belief that individual freedom is fragile and must be protected against the forces of oppression and tyranny.
The characters in The Phantom Menace are not simply fictional archetypes, but deep reflections of George Lucas's own internal struggles. Anakin Skywalker, in particular, embodies the torments and dilemmas George Lucas felt throughout his life.
Anakin Skywalker faces a multitude of inner challenges that resonate with George Lucas' own struggles. First of all, Anakin is tormented by his inner demons, notably his fear of failure and his need for recognition. As a filmmaker, George Lucas has often expressed his own struggle with insecurity and self-doubt. Anakin thus represents this universal quest for self-acceptance and understanding, a theme that George Lucas explores profoundly through the character.
What's more, George Lucas has often said that he felt like an outsider in the film industry, trying to make a place for himself in a world that was foreign to him. Anakin, too, is an outsider, a freed slave who finds himself immersed in a world of Jedi knights and galactic politicians. His desire to fit in and find his place in this new universe mirrors George Lucas' own struggles to find his way in the film industry.
In addition, George Lucas' childhood had a major influence on his work, particularly his interest in fairy tales and mythological stories. These themes are omnipresent in the Star Wars universe, and are particularly explored in The Phantom Menace. The character of Qui-Gon Jinn, for example, embodies the archetypal mentor, guiding Anakin through his heroic journey. George Lucas' fascination with mythological tales is also evident in the struggle between good and evil, a central theme of The Phantom Menace and the entire Star Wars saga.
The film also explores George Lucas' political convictions, expressing them through the complex political intrigues of Star Wars. Corruption in the Galactic Senate and the rise of autocracy echo George Lucas' concerns about democracy and political accountability. He uses the Star Wars universe as a metaphor to explore the dangers of political passivity and mass manipulation.

The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are really told in a macro sense in terms of the Saga, and that’s why they weren’t better received back then.
What i mean is they told in a way that sets up Episode 3,4,5,6. Episode 1 and 2 are more about how Palpatine in manipulating the political process, how the Jedi Council is stuck in their ways, and how Anakin is heading down a dark path. Episode 3,4,5,6 is the payoff to those movies as you see Anakin become Vader, Palpatine become the Emperor, Luke and Leia and the Rebellion become the savior the galaxy and finally Anakin fulfilling the prophecy on Death Star 2.
The majority of fans want just the payoffs but the real hardcore fans love the setup, the lore, the world building. The Phantom Menace is the ultimate setup movie without a payoff so that’s why audiences didn’t gravitate to it in 1999, but probably have a different perspective in 2024.

Lucas wrote the Prequels backwards, and when he finally got to Episode 1 he actually had fun with it.
Edit: Lucas never tried to sell toys with the prequels, if he did he would of made them the same as the original. Which is what Disney tried to do and failed.
Edit: Lucas said for every one person who likes Episode 1 two or three people will hate it. Lucas said people will not like a comedian and a ten year old boy in it, but that's his story.
Edit: Wars are made of politics.

I personally have a lot of nostalgia for Episode 1, but even I can see the film does have its problems. Some things could be developed better, like character arcs & better pacing. That said, I enjoy the action scenes, seeing how the storyline progresses, Qui-Gon’s role as a mentor for Anakin & Obi-Wan, seeing how OT characters were back in the day were like Anakin, & a killer score. Which, rounds up into a pretty decent film. Could be better, but it’s good enough for me.
And yes, Jar Jar is the key to all this.

Denis Villenauve was smart enough not to include child Alia in Dune 2. It doesn't matter how cool the character is on paper, a five year old actor cannot carry herself as an adult. It would have looked ridiculous to have a toddler carrying on conversations with Paul and assassinating the baron.
All this to say, nine-year-old Anakin just doesn't work. They could have cast Haley Joel Osment for the role and it still wouldn't haave turned out much better.

While the prequel story we got was flawed it still told a coherent story from beginning to end. That's the main flaw of the sequel trilogy is that each filmmaker were telling their own story instead of telling one coherent story. Also, The Force Awakens is in my opinion a poor continuation of Return of the Jedi but still a solid reintroduction to Star Wars. I wanted to properly see the New Republic that the Rebellion fought so hard to restore and Luke's New Jedi Order but alas.

I have such a weird relationship with these movies. I was born in 97, so the first star wars movie that I remember being a big event was ROTS. And for a while I'd say I liked the prequels, attack of the clones being my favourite. Largely because they looked flashier and newer and all the toys were about them. But when I was 18 I rewatched the OG trilogy in one sitting, for the first time in years. And my god my eyes were opened. They were incredible, everything from the characters to the story to the world building and practical effects. I was in love. I then not long after rewatched the prequels and they were awful. Attack of the clones being BY FAR the worst. And I hated them. Then when the sequels came out, I was excited because these were the first ones that came out when I was old enough to really experience and enjoy them. And for the most part I enjoyed them. But now with some years to think and look back, my opinions now are the prequels are bad movies, with some incredible aspects. But they atleast had a vision and a clear plan. And while they're bad movies I can say they're decent star wars movies. The originals are still untouchable masterpieces. And the sequels... mixed. The first 2 are good movies! But with some issues. The plan isn't clear and sometimes disrespects the legacy. But they're still overall good movies although I can understand some of the complaints. But then ROS is fucking awful and isn't a good movie or good star wars movie. But it's still better than attack of the clones

The prequel trilogy also brought invaluable richness to the Star Wars universe, with a detailed look at the Jedi Order, Padawan training, Sith, combat mastery, and Jedi teachings. I would agree that generally speaking the prequals are not as bad as the sequals because there is artistic merit. I was born in 1999, i still say jar jar abd the gungans are too goofy and dumb. Also ive always thought one of the biggest problems is that with the exception of the gungans, shmi, and aniken every other character acts like a robot. Padme, the jedi, they all say every single line in the same emotionless, boring, monotone, and robotic way. They have zero charm, charisma, energy, or enthusiasm at all, thus it feels like they dont care in the slightest aboit anything that is going on

I went to go see it in cinemas last weekend for May the 4th, mainly because I missed hearing the opening crawl music in the cinemas and craved that experience no matter what movie it was attached to. I ended up sticking around and I actually enjoyed myself. However, this was because with every scene that came up, I would come up with a better version of it in my head and essentially just watch that. I genuinely think this film is fundamentally broken on multiple levels, which I can only say for one other Star Wars movie, and it's Episode IX. I think that says something.

Prequels fans r gonna grill me but idc
I started watching star wars during COVID time and i started with ot and really liked it.
So i naturally followed up with prequels and hated them.
They're just extremely unwatchable films to me. I liked few concepts but overall those 3 films just sucked imo.
I loved the clone wars and made the prequel era better imo and made me like the prequel lore more
After clone wars, I watched rebels and loved it as well.
Andor , rogue one and mando s1&2 were awesome as well.
But then i watched ep 7&8 finally and they were so awful that couldn't get myself to watch rise of Skywalker.
But not even once they made me think that prequels r good films.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Star Wars in general is so inconsistent. I do enjoy the prequels, but a big part of why I love the villains in particular Dooku and Grievous is because of the Clone Wars show. Watching their deaths is a COMPLETELY different experience watching the show than without having watched it. Also, Rogue One is without a doubt my favorite Star Wars movie since the original trilogy, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it as well.

Before its sequels came out, there wasn’t anything standout about it and the characters weren’t given conflict to overcome, especially with Rey. Granted: Star Wars characters have always been overly competent, but Rey wasn’t given conflict, so I found her boring. The cast of characters while played by charismatic actors, their characters are the same ones we’ve seen in the original Star Wars movie and we never got a scene of Luke, Leia, and Han once in the film before Han died.

It's the magnificent, unparalleled, and timeless universe created by George Lucas, a wonderful, legendary, mythical work, a monument of science fiction.

Far as im concerned, this movie is still bad. Bad acting, terrible writing, boring characters and a mess of a plot make this movie a slog to sit through.
At least the effects are decent for what they were.

I saw this last night on the big screen. I tried to watch it without any bias's because this film is incredibly nostalgic to me. So, i still think the film has some VERY big problems. The pacing is a little all over the place. We spend to much time talking about things that you don't really care about like midichlorians and the politics surrounding the invasion of, Naboo. The humor is pretty awful. Every joke they make with, Jar Jar is just painful to watch. Especially when he's stepping in poop and when he smells a creatures fart and going. "Pee-yousa"
The acting is pretty stale... about 7 out of 10 times when a line is delivered. I don't buy into what they're saying because i'm not really invested in the story.
Now there are things in this movie that i enjoy. The Pod Race is a lot of fun. And obviously Duel of the fates is PHENOMENAL! It still holds up as one of the best fights in star wars history. Overall: It's still a very flawed film. But it has enough entertainment value to be an enjoyable bad movie

Oh Phantom Menace is still a bad movie. Not the worst movie ever, but neither is it great or narratively coherent either. I think you can acknowledge its digital innovations, the Maul fight, and how it set up The Clone Wars narrative, but we should stop pretending TPM actually works on its own terms. That’s how audiences of 1999 originally tried to rationalize the movie before admitting it disappointed.

@@itsatrap8476 Well yeah. If we’re praising any character growth or performance in TPM, it’s not really because of this movie. It’s because a combination of two other movies of various quality and dozens/hundreds of supplementary media have created a clearer picture of what story Lucas wanted to tell over the course of 25 years. Most people usually don’t get that kind of cinematic mulligan. And even the good stuff like TCW cartoons were treated as better than the movies. Not necessarily a sign of Lucas doing something right.
