It's unbelievable that this very needed railway service did not exist for over 20 years. There is space for improvement with current service, but the very fact that it exists is a huge step forward to the right direction.
For a brief time in the 2010s, Ukrainian Railways provided a night train Kyiv-Minsk-Vilnius-Riga, which was the only direct rail connection. But then the pandemic and the war happened and it was discontinued. In the future, the Rail Baltica high-speed line will provide a direct link between Poland and the 3 Baltics, but the project is quite behind schedule. In any case, there have always been frequent and fast bus connections between Vilnius and Riga, which is what the majority of people use.
The Lithuanian Railways are allegedly in talks with Latvia and Estonia to extend this journey up to Tallinn, hopefully soon! In the future there will be a high-speed line connecting the 3 Baltic republics to Poland (the Rail Baltica project), but it will be at least a decade before it's completed. Until then, these slower but relaxing trips will have to do.

It’s a great addition to the European Rail network.
There were trains from Vilnius to Riga, but those were discontinued in the early 2000s, idk why tho.

Thank you for including information about accessibility for wheelchair users. This is so often overlooked, but very important to some travellers.
It’s important!

Currently not - you change trains at Valga.
