Yeah, after her death, just about everyone with a piece of tape or film of her live concerts tried to cash in (record labels releasing "live" albums included). Some of those performances were gems, but many of them were sub-par (bad audio equipment, her voice being strained at the end of a tour or long set, etc.). The original album releases and television performances tend to be her best and reflect the takes she wanted to get across. This band had "funk" overtones.
I agree with Frank Zappa that genre is a marketing concept and not so much a musical one. If you want to think where I think this lands, it's blues of the S.F. psychedelic sub variety but again it's not really more than a convenience at best.

The 'Ball and Chain' version at the 'Monteray Pop Festival' is far superior, and Mama Cass of the Mama's and the Papa's is in the audience, she was a big fan and friend of Janis. You should also hear 'Mama Cass in Califorbia Dreamin 'by the Mama's and the Papa's.
