NESComplex NES Review and Retrospective Super Nintendo SNES Collection Super Metroid The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past Nintendo 64 N64 Retro Gaming Is it fun? Nintendo Power Time Machine Retro Rewind
Hey everyone! This one was a huge task! I researched and scripted for about 2 months before capturing footage and even starting the edit. The editing took me over 100 hours! I'm crazy, but i wanted to do the game justice! If you enjoyed this video PLEASE share it with others on FB and twitter! After spending so much time on it I just want everybody to see it! Thank you so very much!!!
NESComplex being a huge fan of megaman I loved everything about this. Thank you for putting in all the work on this, it is excellent.
NESComplex It really shows! super well done video.
never was that big a Mega Man fan overall, but always had a soft spot for the X series.
Thank you!!
Thank you! It definitely has its own style and that might not be for everyone.
It is amazing!
Wow, I never realized that the power outages were a result of defeating Storm Eagle. Amazing details.
The lights still turn off if you haven't beat Storm Eagle. The point of it is to highlight the fireflys that attack X.
The differences are:
1. pieces of the wrecked aircraft in the background
2. no more sparks on the floor
3. the mini boss, can't shoot electricity
Spark Mandrill's entrance also has the lights turn off either way. (It would be interesting if it happened during the boss fight.)
Yeah, I love the stages being effected by other bosses being beaten. I wish the other X games did that.
Well there are certain places where outages will always happen, but after beating Storm Eagle, the outages happen everywhere
I think it's spark mandrill that shuts off the electricity storm eagle turns off the weather in sting chameleon
You can tell how much heart you put into this, and how sincere you were about Megaman X. You don't see that in a lot of content these days. Awesome man!
Heck yeah! I love this game! It's brilliant!
Aww sounds like he's your type
@codeunderground412 2 years ago you said some cringe shit. I hope you've grown up.
@@NESComplexyour voice sounds like Android #17 from DBZ
This game is truly a masterpiece. Im glad i was able to experience it day one back in 93'.
it was so good from the very start! I honestly think it's the best in the series
I first experienced it back in 2015
Me too, launch day I was playing this masterpiece!
It was something special to play this game at that time. Finding all the armor parts without UA-cam or internet in general made games feel more "majestic" and it was awesome to trade info and tech with friends.
It was indeed a special moment bring this game home from the video rental store and playing it around xmas 93. I didn't beat it then but eventually bought it and spent hours playing this masterpiece.
What a great review! Good job 👍🏾
Thank you Reggie! I love your channel man! Your GBA Hidden Gems videos have introduced me to some awesome games... CT Special Forces Baby!!!
NESComplex yes!! Awesome dude! Glad you found that cool game
Reggie do you even like Mega Man?
8-bitBishop Yep. I like it more than other certain people who gave up on video games and abandoned their friends just so they could work crazy hours at some job. 😬
Radical Reggie Wow that guy sounds like a real jerk.
Dude......this was incredible. I have actually always been down on the x series compared to original but I think you may have just changed my mind and I’ll be playing Mega Man X tonight because of you
Down on X?!?! I actually just played Super Adventure Island because of you!
Adored this game. The art style. The gameplay. The tight controls. The fact that the hadoken was REAL. Dope. Epic. Perfect.
Also, the interconnectivity of levels isn't just for feel. In sting chameleons stage, if you didn't flood the level, you couldn't reach the power up. It encouraged replayability of levels you may have already beaten. Expands the game and experience.
Exactly. I think Demon's Crest tried to emulate that idea from the Mega Man X games but it didn't come off nearly as well. Both CAPCOM titles. The game is a great example of the total package something all other games should strive for. The play control for me is the best I have ever seen in this game and probably X2.
I just discovered your channel, and I have NEVER seen such thorough, impassioned reviews of the NES and SNES games I grew up with! These are amazing! 🖖😀
Thank you so much!!! I just try very hard to express how we all feel about these games. I spend a lot of time on the scripts. These games belong to ALL of us and I want to do them justice
@@NESComplex
Super Nintendo was an amazing console.
I keep finding amazing games all the time, even obscure ones such as "Wild Guns", "Imperium" and "FirePower 2000".
Seriously, your videos look ridiculous...they keep on getting better! I remember when X came out...it blew me away!
Thank you! I'm really trying to perfect the craft :-)
I'm so glad you're back on youtube. You are one of my favorite youtubers. Your videos are really informative and super well done and edited. I'm already looking forward to the next video. I get really happy every time a new nescomplex video appears in my youtube feed 😄
Thank you so very much! It’s very encouraging!
Great video, one thing: the hadoken requires five visits to Armadillo's stage where you collect the power up at the very end, but you don't have to die. The counter is activated by the last power up after you find all the collectibles, then just exit out. Thanks for sharing! :)
Either way, the level features enough classic bats that yield extra lives so often the cliff jump at the end is practically inconsequential
Love the Mega Man X transition screen that you made. And I know how tedious cutting stuff out is in Photoshop, and then arranging it all within the video. And the little subtle things that you do, like the way you add a slight "shake" to the photos that you whisk in. I know how tedious that sort of thing is too, but hey, it's not going unnoticed. Very much appreciated.
I played this one as a teenager, but for whatever reason I just couldn't get into it as much as the 8-bit Mega Mans, and I ended up trading it. Funny thing is that the music still gets randomly stuck in my head out of nowhere at times -- the tone reminds me a lot of Breath of Fire. I did play it again when the Mega Man X collection came out for PS2, but that was the last time. I'm gonna pick it up again. Great video, Chris!
You sir are a great editor so you know what it takes! Thank you for noticing... as for the game itself. You should give it another go, but honestly i'm not a HUGE fan of the rest of the X series... 2 and 4 are good, but that's about it!
Just watching this twice in a row. Wow, man.. so, so well put together, and many of us know how much work and love goes into a video of this magnitude. Well, it paid off.. this is your best episode so far! I've always met this game with a bit of a shrug, as I grew up with the NES titles and not this one.. but I never realized how deep this game goes, so thanks for making me want to play this again! Also, bravo for using the word "kelp" in a retrospective :)
Thank you Tim! And THANK YOU for letting me use your painting for the Legacy section at the end of the video! You are such a great artist dude!
My absolute pleasure, sir.. glad it fit with your vision!
Definitely one of my all-time favorite games. The perfect action platformer.
I think you're right! It's so smooth and perfectly controls.
This retrospective was pure joy to watch! Mega Man X is truly a masterpiece and I appreciate your analysis of all that it offers. The Archie Mega Man comic is amazing, and I am happy that you showed stuff from that as well!
Wow! What a masterpiece of a video! This is the greatest review I've ever seen, tuned to the finest detail, just like the game itself.
Thank you Damian! That means a lot! I really tried to do the game justice!
When I watch videos like this it actually upsets me that you don't have more subs. This needs to change!!
Share the VIDEO EVERYONE!! ♥️ Fantastic as always man!!!!
Hahaha Thank you so much! YOU need more subscribers! I love the NEW NES Pursuit videos... and that voice at the beginning of each episode... so soothing and manly
great video, amazing. I love Megaman X sound effects, especially when bosses are hit. attention to details is everything.
They really did a phenomenal job
Megaman X is for gaming what 2001: A Space Odyssey did to cinema. They nailed every detail correctly and perfectly balanced for new players also veterans who want to speed run.
Now I gotta make a Megaman X analysis you have inspired this 90s kid :-) Born in 1989, Super nintendo was a beast of a console with the best collection of video games I have ever seen even to this day.
Love that you're making videos again, one of my favorite UA-cam channels (:
It's been fun, if not a full-time jobby... Thank you for your kind words :-)
It really is a masterpiece. It's one of the first games I ever played as a kid. Very near and dear to my heart ♥
Yes!!! And I'm off today to watch it early!!! Your way of conveying the overall message in a video is hands down the best on UA-cam. You should have been a writer.
Thanks Jay! Sometimes i actually hate writing because im too much of a perfectionist!
The best thing about X and even X2 that they started to drop the ball on was you were always in control. There were no auto scrollers or forced motion style game play with the exception of a a few moving platforms parts. The best part of Mega Man is jumping and shooting and in X even dashing so anytime you weren't doing that fell more like of a hassle just waiting. That being said I love Mega Man and own every North American title and I mean every title.
Back in 93' I naturally found the Hadouken. I was replaying the levels over and over again and randomly jumped at the end of the minecart in Chill Penguins stage and was like what the hell?? No one believed me, so I had to bring them over to my house to check it out.
Haha don’t you mean Armored Armadillo’s stage??? 😂
Man, who knows, it was 30 years ago
Still my fav game of all time. I have a history with this game and it made me feel like I never did for another one.
This is one of my favorite games on the SNES. I'm glad they did the re-release on the Switch! Loved replaying some of the early X series games!
Another great video.
U're a really good storyteller, man...
I'm happy that I was able to experience this game back when it was launched... today, it's part of my SNES collection along with X2, X3 and Megaman 7...
I played this when I was 4 years old. Thank you for this tribute to a game I truly love and will never forget.
Great Video. I also feel that Mega Man X himself, simply looks much cooler than normal Mega Man. Less like a child and more the cyborg you wish you were :D
I remember when I first saw the preview in Nintendo Power for this game. I knew then that it was a master piece. 3 Pictures told me that. Then I got it on my Birthday. months later. Loved it then, and love it now.
Mega Man 2 was the 1st game I've played on the NES and Mega Man X was the 1st SNES game I've ever played. This franchise holds a very special place in my heart. Thank you for this review, you brought back so many nostalgic feelings!!! :)
I’ve played this game regularly for over 20 years. I love speed running it. I’m no where near the world record holder my best at 56 minutes I’m pretty happy with. The replayability of this game is unlike any other. It’s fantastic
I don't know who designed the cars of the future, but if they look like the cars of today ...0:39
Love that Game!!!! Also your videos are always Awesome!!!
Keep up the great work !!!!
Thank you Coolgreek79! I'm keeping up :-)
NESComplex wow you actually reply!!!!! I love your channel even more now!!!!!
I do. Lol. even to replies to my replies. Hahaha
This is another fantastic video, entertaining and informative from start to finish. Very well done, Chris! Although I've only played Mega Man 2 on the NES, I really want to have the chance to play this masterpiece. By the way, do you know who else recorded video game music on tape directly from the TV speakers? Yes, I did and I listened to it endlessly. "What separates good games from great ones is the attention to details", and that's also what separates your work from all the rest. All the best and thank you!
Thank you Carlos! I really do try to pay attention to the details. How cool you also did the cassette thing. Lol
Wow..Your Videos have Leveled Up this summer..I hope to one day be able to create such quality..
You will... thank you! I really have been putting my all into it
NESComplex Thanks. I figure it will take some time to develop the Channel👍
You did this incredible game justice with a similarly incredible video. Thank you
This was amazing and beautifully written! Watching it brought a tear to my eye. The nostalgia rushes back; epic gameplay, music, upgrades and so much more. Keep up the great work - I am happy to come across your content!!
Thank you! Mega Man X is such a masterpiece!
this game was my childhood... little did me and my twin know we were speeding running this game in the 3rd grade. also spoiled me with my taste in music to this day lol
It’s so awesome that your regularly uploading again dude!!!! The editing is superb!!!!
Thank you! I spend WAY too much time editing
This is what our gamer community needs! games like Mega Man X is a piece of art and it must be known!
On a side note, you actually don't have to die to unlock the haduken. You can exit the stage after accessing the ledge at the end of the stage. And keep doing this until the capsule finally appears.
Really? Ooooo. Awesome. Still I think dying might be easier than restarting each time. You can stock up on extra men with the ball bat near the beginning of the stage.
I am so glad you've returned to UA-cam! Please keep up the excellent work, your videos are among the best on the entire site.
Wow! THANK YOU so much! I will try to keep it up :-) These videos are a really labor of love and i'm just glad people are enjoying them
This was *amazing*! I remember playing this when it came out. I don't recall even hearing of the Hadouken thing, though. Very cool indeed.
Also, @9:46: "the perfect high-octane steroid rocket fuel ingredients"--I think you might have overdosed on '90s. I'm not sure what the treatment is. Surge and Lunchables, maybe? :-D
Haha... definitely it was the Squeeze-it!
NESComplex, your video quality, commentary and writing for your videos is top notch.
Thank you!!!
That was a perfect retrospective! Big Mega Man X fan, and I can never get enough of digging back through it's history and development. Awesome job!
Thank you! I try to do the best I can. I appreciate the comment!
Never knew about those cause and effect of the environmental details. The only thing that popped in my mind was "didn't this level look a bit different?'' that's it. No connection at all haha.
A fantastic video on my first and favorite experience with the Mega Man series. Always loved this game. Always will. Great work, buddy!
Thanks Tipster! It really is the best! Thank you for the share too man! Much appreciated
The PSP remake of Mega Man X is also worth playing. It's not a simple retread of the original, as it mixes up some of the item locations, among other things.
Insta-like.
Thank you!
Probably my favorite SNES game as a child
What a masterpiece of a review and retrospective, NESComplex. You must have placed a ton of work into this, and it's definitely one of your best videos ever. Thank you, my son and I really enjoyed this so much. It means so much to us that there are people like you out there creating such great content like this for us to enjoy.
Thanks for noticing JMatt! I definitely give it my all! Quality is always preferred over quantity imho. I’m trying to make sure that every video is top notch!
I remember my dad took me as a little kid in the 90's to the store "FUNCOLAND" I WONT FORGET these times the employees allowed you to actually pick a game a they place it on a console with a TV. Not no demo. The real game! And my dad bought me for NES the first megaman. And since I saw megaman X and he looked so cool
The rest was history. I loved the game and still play it!!! I have 2 kids now and my dad being a grandpa would remember those days at the game store. Thanks dad
I loved Funcoland! So many amazing memories there!
Beautiful...thanks for sharing
Glad i still got the game it's one of my favorite games ever
You have good taste!
I only recently started to play Mega Man X with the SNES classic. Not sure how I missed this game growing up? Great video as always man!
Thank You! I definitely poured my heart into it
Well better late than never! It is IMHO the pinnacle of Mega Man games I think it's the best one of all of them before and after
You can tell, I'm always amazed at your production value.
3:39 looks like what MegaMan would look like if he got all the chaos emeralds.
Vaul, Dog Warrior HYPER MAN!
GREAT WORK! I loved it, man! Always a pleasure to see you go to town... I remember you commented on the F Zero X video in the past, I'm finishing a comparison series of the NES vs Genesis! Like beating and reviewing both while commenting on all the differences of the audio/visual and gameplay. I think you would like it as well, man!
Yah mega man x is one of my favorite games ever
There was a time I was not high on the X series, I remember renting the 3 SNES games, never able to do anything in them at all, did fine in the original series. I now have the Mega Man X Collection on the PS2, but I also have the SNES trilogy, well the first game on SNES, the other 2 the Super Famicom versions as they are cheaper. I will likely have to buy X1 again as the copy I have is from a friend's sister, and since she didn't take care of her games, the game bears no label at all, I literally had to sharpie on the front of a bare cart so I could remember what game it is. If I do buy the game again, it'll be the Japanese version, so that it'll match it's 2 younger SFC siblings.
That friend's sister gave me the SNES games she had for free, not one of them doesn't have some sort of label damage, and I can tell from the copy of Battletoads Double Dragon that either a cat, or dog peed on the thing well over a decade or so ago, the cart label is gross. Of course the game works, and I actually gave it a small cleaning when I got it in case of any kind of smell that might come from it.
But back to my original point, it took a couple decades, but eventually I warmed up to the Mega Man X series, the first 3 are incredibly beautiful games for the SNES.
I used to record Mega Man 3 and 4 music to cassettes too lol. Nintendo music helped me appreciate techno
How funny! I guess lots of us did that
HAHA at 6:30 ish you said "PECKER BOTS!"
Indeed! Lol. :-0
Boy am I SICK of waiting for Mega Man X Legacy Collection!
It won’t be long now! I’m stoked too!
Or finding out that X's friend Zero is Dr. Wily's final, culmination robot who happens to contain an extra special code for a certain Sigma. Also of note, it's the future and the robots are now sorted ANIMAL SPECIES.
I need to play this game.
Fantastic video. This is a childhood favorite and extremely nostalgic. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Shaun! I just hope there was some information you didn't already know.
I was familiar with most of the secrets but the history and development was all new to me. Lots of great information here very comprehensive. 👌
This video has crafted for excellence
I'm 41 now, got this game the year it launched, but not til Christmas. Didn't even ask for it,mom just hooked me up i suppose. It was my fav game for a year lol. The good old days...
LOL you don't have to DIE to get the Hadouken. You can just quit out of the stage, and come back again like 6 times. I think you did have to arrive to that last capsule with full health, though.
Dude, this is perhaps your best vid yet. Keep them coming, because I'm absolutely loving all of it!
Thank you so much. It was a labor of love that’s for sure!
fav game ever , fell asleep a couple times with the intro playing over and over again and i have no idea how i did that with the alarm blasting rofl but i was like 4 or 5
Your passion for nostalgia fueled story telling is EPIC. I still watch your legend of Zelda a link to the past video because I just can't get enough of the EPIC nes. Hahaha see what I did there. Thankyou for doing what you do.🖒
Hahaha. Thanks Greg! You are welcome, but thank YOU for watching!
Does anybody else realize Mega Man is just Robo Cop?
It is the other way around.
soundtrack was so good, idk how the snes did that. one thing i didnt really understand at the time is what a risk it was to not only bring it to the snes, but also make something new.
edit - if you play MMX for the first time, re bind dash to the R shoulder button. thank me later. :D
Great video! I remember playing this for the first time and being blown away. A masterpiece indeed. Great work!
Thank you and you're absolutely right! Masterpiece!
Wow such a great review man! Got yourself a new subscriber and new fan! Much love and Mega Man X lives on in hearts! 😎😎😎
Great new videos dude! I love seeing more videos from you!
Thank you Wally!
One of my favorite games and favorite megaman games. I love the videos man. Your one of my favorite content creators.
Thank you Andrew! That means a lot to me! What is your favorite Mega Man game? I think X has just beat out 2 and 3 in my ranking
NESComplex yeah x is prob my favorite then 2 and 3. 7 was fun as well. I havent played any of the other x games cause they are too expensive but im gonna pick up the mega man x collection later on this month for switch.
Good call X2 and X4 are both pretty amazing
Wait, you don't have to redo the entier Armored Armadillo stage to get the capsule to appear? You can just die? o_O
Every song on this game gives you unbelievable confidence you go running straight into BUTT KICKING AFTER BUTT KICKING 😂😂😂😂
You actually don't have to die for the hadouken just warp out of armored armadillos course a couple times after you have all the items and it will be there
Mega Man X was incredible, no doubt about it. However, saying it was his best is a stretch. I would say Mega Man 8 for the Sega Saturn/Playstation was probably his best. Aside from the goofy voice acting, it took the anime flair of X and cranked it to an 11. It had huge boss characters, and that sweet Red Book Audio was untouchable.
Earthbound, Contra, Mario 3, A Link To The Past, Final Fantasy VI, Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Souls, Ocarina Of Time… I’m trying to round out my 10/10’s and come up with my personal favorites of all time. I’m gonna brain on it some more
I love this game. I actually enjoy it more than X2 and X3 for the SNES. While visually, the later two games looked great, the passion of X1's music which is a powerful driving force of the game, was just not preserved in X2 and 3. X1 has energy. Lots of it. Storm Eagle and Spark Mandril stages has my favorite Mega tunes. Really gets you amped up when playing as the little blue bot. :'D
Fantastic retrospective, it's given me an even deeper love for this amazing game.
Thanks. I had a lot of fun with that one! I left with a greater appreciation too
Watched the Chrono Trigger, Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid retrospectives. Thanks for posting these. Think you were a little bias towards Super Met, but I can understand the personal nostalgic romanticizing of a favorite game. Do you plan to make another? Early Super Nintendo games that come to mind for me are Final Fight and U.N. Squadron, the latter of which I have not seen any content.
It's also the background for me, it's so techno futuristic. Especially the beginning stage with the city and towers at the very back. I'd imagine heavy industry going on, billions of moving parts and lights. That's what i love about Japanese design. I feel the same way about other works like Einhänder, Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 2, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and even the miniature sets on Power Rangers during the Kaiju battle segments.
10:58 you don't have to die everytime. Just exit the level...
This... plus it is totally possible to find that capsule by accident because i did. I used to play through Armadillo's stage multiple times to fill up my E-tanks before doing the Sigma stages, and stumbled upon that capsule one time not knowing what it was.
I love MMX. X2 is my favorite SNES game, but I've poured HOURS into MMX. Wish I had known back in 1999 about speed runs and all, I'd have had a record.
8:20...nothing beats SparkMan Drill's music.
ua-cam.com/video/Hnl-oScFatk/v-deo.html enough said. THE best...period.
I just wanna point out the transition @ 4:38. The amount of health that's missing is JUST ENOUGH to extend the bar to the missing health @ 4:39. I see you @NESComplex.
Demon's Crest by Capcom from Gargoyles Quest/Ghost and Goblins fame tried to emulate the same idea of stage changes and backtracking to pickup new items but it didn't come off nearly as well as in the Mega Man X series. I think X2 was also an awesome game but Sigma was way to easy, unless you have to fight Zero 1st.
I prefer the title super Mega Man cuz Mega Man X makes no fucking sense it has no relevance to the series. Okay his name is supposed to be X ? Well who the fuck knew that back then or even cared. Should have just stuck with the super Nintendo formula. I mean didn't the Nintendo 64 version call it Mega Man 64?
The play control for this game was the best I had ever seen on any action game period. It was just that good then and still today. so precise, the game can be made very easy by getting the armor upgrades and heart tanks early in the game or more challenging by avoiding them completely and going with just stock X. The music outstanding, the story excellent, the bosses were fun and I think more inventive. You can tell all the work that went into X1 and X2. I think they rushed X3 and it didn't come off near as good as 1 or 2. There was no easy way to harvest energy off enemies in X3 and with the difficultly that became a major problem in the Sigma stages. Whereas in X1 the bats were great even the caterpillars leading up to Sigma's shaft. X2 had the Energy capsules haul in the water stage.
Mega Man X was one of the best Super Nintendo games. It has aged very well. I think the X series was much easier than the old NES games. It was a little more forgiving and you didn't have those really hard water stages with spikes everywhere. So that could be the only drawback is that it can be an easy game to complete. Unlike Castlevania on the NES which seems damn near impossible to beat without cheating. After playing Mega Man 7 , I thought it was much harder game for the SNES in the old style but nowhere near as fun as MMX.
Dude these retrospective/reviews are great. The first one I watched was Chrono Trigger. I've never played it nor am I a traditional RPG fan but I am a fan of Akira Toriyama and it was awesome hearing about his involvement as well as information on the other creators. I'm about to go harvest a bunch of marijuana while living in a tent, and I foresee myself binge watching everyone you've put out as UA-cam is the only app I can watch while living out in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for the uploads dude. You're going to make my harvest this year easier to bare.
My all time favourite game
The first time I played it, a buddy of mine brought his snes over to my house on my birthday party. I set it up in my brothers room, lights were off, that title screen started, the guitar music kicked in, that golden X flashed and “CHING”Ed
Instantly hooked
Side note, that buddy ended up becoming my step brother
I kinda knew him from school but not much, started talkin to him about X as he perused the game section at the video store
We became friends, then our parents started dating
I already have a tattoo of megaman, I’d like to get the golden X as well, not just for my love of the game but cause of how it reminds me of my family
I just worry it wouldn’t be good
Great job. Please review shmups.
Oh yeah! I love Shmups!!!! Gradius 3 FTW
Just found your channel and been going through the vids (Chrono Trigger is the best game ever)
You didn't mention it so I thought I'd point out something cool about X. When you get the armor upgrade, X's damage animation changes. Instead of being thrown back like something exploding in front of him, he puts his head down and crosses his arms in a block in front of him. Neat detail.
This was my first megaman I completed I'm surprised it even worked my sister's boyfriend gave me half a cartridge at the time with only the chip bottom half intact. I loved this game as a kid It got me into megaman x4 and x5 I didn't play 6,3 or 2 until 2004 when I bought the x collection either way x1 and 4 were the best in the series the sound track on x4 is a masterpiece.
Why is this game so complete. The secrets that exist only created more rumors back in the day. You thought L is real created rumors in SM64, naw, this game made you think why wouldn't it be real. Aside from glitches makes you wonder if there are still secrets ppl don't know about
Woooooooo. I played it so much back in the day, i made a "speedrun" and recorded it. In...98...i think. Saw it again last year. Im sure i can cut my time down to a 3rd of what it was now. Meeemoreees. Great explanations. Never truly noticed the layers of each stage. Peace.
This is going to sound odd, but what made me like this game back in it's heyday was the ability to wall jump. Up until that point, every game I played that featured a bottomless pit meant instant death with very few exceptions such as exploration areas. MMX's introduction to wall jumping however gave me that rare 2nd chance to live when encountering a pit.
