Just a couple questions raised for me. Does the Famicom manual have the same (or similar) information about the story and world of the game? I feel like this is significant, since it can kind of be ignored if it's just creative localization. And my other question - the game has 256 levels (most of which are garbage data). I'd be very curious to hear the explanation of this (in layman's terms if possible). Especially considering how the developers creatively kept the game as small as possible. An something anecdotal - I'm pretty positive that I discovered many of these levels when I was a kid by altering an existing set of Game Genie codes that changed your starting level. I'm guessing there may be some information out there about this.
The most interesting thing to me, about this era of games, was one of the first points you made: the size of the game. It is almost a lost art really.... creating a great game that fits in X amount of storage space and can only use X amount of ram. There's some other videos that go further into how they pulled this off and all the programming and graphical tricks they had to utilize. It is a very interesting subject matter.
I’m making a gameboy color game and I have to worry about the memory usage all the time. The maximum it can be os 4MB and I have tons of other limits like only 7 sprite palettes (only 3 colors per sprite) and 6 background palettes. Plus only 192 tiles per screen and only 25 sprite frames per scene! It’s challenging, like a fun puzzle
This is great. The time and love poured into it shines through. So much insight but under 20 mins, total reverence for the subject while being cut through with real humour... Miyamoto asking us to 'smash the like' :D... And the editing is amazing, especially during the music sequence (which I had no idea about). This channel is just brilliant.

Well....i'm kind of shock that those themes are not 100% Kondo's composicion. But the guy is a genius, he turned them iconic and i'm sure SMB3 soundtracks are 100% of his own....... Right? Awesome video!
I read somewhere that the Spinys thrown by Lakitu only go straight up and down because of a programming error. They're actually programmed to keep Lakitu's momentum and even bounce off walls, but their sideways movement gets nullified due to a wrong command in the code.
9:08 -- That very likely is why in early Sonic games when Sonic bops and enemy it turns back into a friendly critter. Plus Sonic's trademark speed is inspired by one or more of Sonic's creators by the idea of completing SMB's World 1-1 as fast as you can.
I think the lore implies the Toads that were turned into bricks are just the ones that give you items. Also, the 1-up trick is a glitch in the first game. It was made intentional in Lost Levels.
I suppose the reason why I didn’t see the sliding glitch when you resurface out of a pipe was due to the sheer number of glitches in the game. You can only cover so much content in a single video. Nice job, as always.
Just wondering, where did you get all of those Super Mario Bros developing notes from? I really like to see the hand written designs of these games before they put them into the computer. I'd love a video explaining that entire process.
@NESComplex: You should talk about the FDS Super mario bros. 2 that his Super mario bros. the lost levels and a lot of the false rummor behind it. World 9 can only be played if you finish the game without using any Warp zone including the reverse one, for the FDS version this his not truth because the FDS version his not capable on checking if a warp zone pipe as been taken, so instead it check if you beat all castle level instead, so don't worry if you go into a reverse warp zone, the reverse warp zone takes you near a warp zone to return to the world you where backwarded from, 3-1 warp zone to world 1, find the vine in 1-2 to go back to world 3, and also in 8-1 if you found the warp zone to world 5, fine the vine in world 5-2 to go back to world 8, you will still have world 9, as long you did not hit retry on the game over screen, also in world 9 you only have 1 life you miss you have to beat all castle again for another attempt at it. World 9 was made as a reference to glitch levels. Only the Super nintendo version of Super mario bros. the lost levels can check if you enter a pipe name Warp zone to remove world 9 from your save file if you save after doing so. That rummor spread because world 9 his only access by not using any warp zone in the all-stars version SNES they auto assume that the FDS version to unlocked world A through D his to beat world 8-4 a totall of 8 times without using warp zone, this his false, you still have to beat 8-4 a total of 8 times in the FDS version but you can used warp zone to do so, and because it still take so long to unlocked the trade off his World A through D his easier in this version compare to the Super Nintendo verson except of C-3 but that his only because of a glitch. In the FDS version once you got 8 stars on the title screen used the continued code to start in world A, you get one star on the title screen every time you beat 8-4. On the GBA version of this game exclusive to Japan the title screen return the continued code, because of the save feature, only in the GBA version of the game to get world A after getting 8 stars on the title screen hold B instead of A.

I wrote some amateur novels back around my High School days, and I thought they were great ideas with light homages. But reading back through them, I see I was clearly ripping off my inspirations. Its tough to be entirely original these days!
Dude this video is so good. Thanks for working so hard on this! I didn’t know half this stuff
Thanks Jack!!!! Glad you enjoyed it!
You are literally in my top 3 UA-cam pages man, eventhough you barely release new videos.. I can feel your love for the games and collecting in every video you post..
I appreciate that greatly! I don't release often because i am a methodical perfectionist!
Well you create perfection for sure my friend..
