@@TheYorkMan IT Has better art style, level design, Music, secrets, and IT feels like open World game. Big part of SMW's charm is exploration. Masterpiece.
@@TheYorkMan For me personally, it's probably the nostalgia. One of my first memories I have was me and my dad beating it for the first time when I was like 3 years old lol. I probably go back and play through it 2 or 3 times a year just because it takes me back to those days. Overall though, it does have a certain charm to it that I just don't find in other Mario games, that could just be me though.
This was truly when I loved the Mario franchise. Many hours we spent as a family playing this game. That nostalgic memory in itself is hard to replicate nowadays. I think this title was best realized by the folks working for Mario.
I remember when this came out at the mall. They had a system to play at the game store , and there was always 2-3 kids waiting in line to play it.The game, Super Mario World. The time 1991.
All the different themes being a different variation of those notes is incredible. It just adds another layer of cohesiveness to this masterpiece! It set a bat that few platformers even come close to.
IMO this is the greatest pure "video game" ever created. It's so simple, so accessible and so understandable and yet the learning curve to mastery is also something to behold. Everything about this is perfect - the controls, the feeling of weight, the positive feedback from the satisfaction of reaching areas that can only be accessed as your own competency increases... It's simply perfect.
LMAO "Yoshi is extremely useful. As Mario PUNCHES him in the HEAD his frog like tongue lashes out" I've never noticed how brutally abusive Mario was to his pal, Yoshi.
I beg to differ. He Is clearly hitting yoshi in the head. “Just pointing” wouldn’t make yoshis head fling forwards. And Mario/Luigi clearly hit him with a fist.
This game was pure magic to me back in the days... It was my initiation to gaming and it didn't loose any of its fascination until today. In the times of emulation nowadays I have it always in reach in my pocket ;-) No platformer is better than SMW, hardly even close to this genius masterpiece!
Super Mario World is definitely one of my favorite Mario games, and still play it from time, to time!! Thanks for the memory lane. Miss those good days!!
Really? There are 2 basic themes for pretty much every level, with added percussion when riding Yoshi, One theme for 70% of the overworld, with some repetitive jingles for Vanilla Dome, Forest of Illusion and The Valley of Bowser... You have access to UA-cam... Look up the SNES soundtracks for Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI, Castlevania IV, Chrono Trigger, Mr. Nutz... To name a few..... And then look beyond the SNES, and find the music used in games in the 80's arcade games (Bubble Bobble, Outrun... to name just two), and then the Playstation, Saturn, Dreamcast, Neo Geo.... and every console (and on the PC since 1990)..... Jesus, literally thousands of games with better music than SMW!!!!!!
@@doctorfeinstone6524 But the fact that what is basically the same arrangement with slight variations is almost more amazing. As a kid I could not tell such a thing and the music of each level did not seem to be as similar as they really are. Its actually not easy to make small changes to something yet make it seem so different.
I find it boring compared to SMB3, which had different themes. I never liked the wagnerian "leitmotiv" in music. The tunes I like the most in SMW are the ones for the world map.
I watched this entire video with a smile on my face, loving every minute of it and got a little emotional at the end. These earlier Mario games are the only ones that do that to me. Just by looking at these characters, scenarios, listening to the music, all of it just brings me back to a time when everything was easy, fun and full of love. Living with my grandparents, playing it with my friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, the entire family would get together to play and watch each other play. Now life has taken its course and those gatherings are just memories. Treasured memories. Thank you Mario, for being such an important part of my life.
Another classic video on yet another Nintendo classic. You capture that magical moment of the 90s as we anticipated this revelation, inviting both nostalgic and nostalgia-curious an opportunity to feel it all over again. Dare I say that no matter how many times you watch it, you’ll want to hold it close and watch it again!
Just beat this game for the first time last night. Unfortunately i was not alive when it came out, but i bought a super nintendo last month and have been having an awesome time playing super mario world. I really believe this is one of the greatest games of all time. The ending music put such a huge smile on my face. I love it!!
This game was a masterpiece. I'll never forget getting SNES when it first came out and playing this as a kid, it makes me want to dig out my Super Nintendo now and play it
Alright so I've played this games about 30 times in my life. Most of them getting all 96 exits. I never knew 30 coins for the green star box!!!!! I thought it was a time interval or amount of points you had.... Great Video
So jealous lol. I wanted a SNES so bad for Christmas in 91, and my parents got me a genesis. I was slightly disappointed at first. I'm glad they got me one though cuz I probably never would have checked out Sega's games had they not got me it.
Just discovered your channel man, and have spent the last hour or so watching your content. Highly impressed! Amazing stuff dude, please keep it up! Thanks
After watching the beautiful docu about Mario Bros 3 by The Gaming Historian and being so impressed with it, I had to watch this one again. It is just as good! You guys should be working for the Discovery Channel or something. You are both that good! So entertaining, yet so much info and research. I love every second of your work!
Just played through this about a year ago on 3DS virtual console. I never beat it as a child so it was very satisfying to get to the end this time. Great game man
Definitely one of my favorite games of all time, I’ll never forget getting this with the SNES for Christmas in 1991, I couldn’t stop playing it. Finding the hidden levels like Star Road and all the new mechanics this game presented made it an instant classic, I downloaded it on the Wii years back and completed it 100%, I’ll probably download it again on my Wii U or Switch just to do it all again, this game is timeless.
We must be about the same age. I got mine summer of 92 so it had been out for a bit and I’d played mostly at a friend’s house... those were amazing times with family and friends
Yo, this is an amazing video all around but I think my favorite part is where you stitched Kondo's overall theme together in all its different implementations. Flawless, bravo!
Super Mario World is the greatest game ever created. I will fucking __ ***DIE*** __ on this hill, I would fight until I dropped dead to protect this game. There is no other game where I listen to that title theme and I can’t help but smile remembering the levels and how much fun I had playing it. SMB3 was revolutionary for being on the NES, breaking charts, but Super Mario World managed to not only sell over 20 MILLION copies and introduced many ideas and enemies that have stayed since. The game brings back a sense of joy and nostalgia I cannot comprehend or put into words. I will genuinely die on this fucking hill, the copy of Super Mario World I own is more valuable than my fucking life. Super Mario World has probably been the only game that I’ve played and has stuck with me ever since, it’s an integral part of me now and I’ve been changed by it.
This was a graceful cover on what is my favorite game of all time. Is it the greatest game ever made? I doubt it. But it is by all means MY favorite. I guess it has to do more with where I was a child and how it made me smiled every time I played it. Even now just thinking about my childhood time with the game, it kept me as a gamer (though very lightly these days) even in my late 30’s. This was a special treat. Bravo on a very awesome cover.
Unfortunately Mario titles never seem to edge out BEST GAME EVER or Best game on systems, because they are the first, and therefore test subjects. But it's important to note that because of Mario, we have other great games. Super Metroid and Zelda:LTTP wouldn't exist or have had the funding to be developed in depth without the groundwork laid down by Mario games. I think the system where Mario games shine out above all others in flagship titles is the N64.
J Mario games will never edge out any game as the best of the year. Mario games are catered towards the younger crowd. It’s made to not get too frustrated or overly long when playing. Not to say us adults can’t enjoy them too. The only game I can think of that might have a chance to win GotY was Super Mario 64. That was such an achievement of technology and gameplay that I don’t think can be duplicated again. The jump from 2D movement into a 3D atmosphere was such a game changer. It literally shift how we play many games today.
Thank you! It truly is a magical game and it’s all bound up with the amazing Super Nintendo! After spending as much time as I did playing the game, thinking about it in every way, and creating this video... I have an even greater depth of appreciation for it!

I applaud you and I think I speak for all of us 90’s kids in saying, I can’t wait for the next one!
This was the peak of the 2d mario games. It was such a good game. Great soundtrack, a good world and level design, lots of hidden secrets, and fluid controls. It holds up great, and remains to be my favorite game of all time

I'm glad to have this channel randomly suggested to me, cause I'm definitely subscribing. And that Takashi Tezuka quote at the end is why this game's still loved to this day. When you have that kind of approach to making games, you make a classic that's lasted 30 years.
Super Mario World was one of the first games I played on a console instead of an old computer - also the first Mario game I played. This game was a cultural reset. Growing up we didn’t have enough money to buy the SNES nor play Mario World, but I remember going to my neighbors house and playing it there and being absolutely bewitched by this game. I was probably 8. Those were the best years.

I still love playing through this game every now and then! It's my all time childhood favourite!
This was truly when I loved the Mario franchise. Many hours we spent as a family playing this game. That nostalgic memory in itself is hard to replicate nowadays. I think this title was best realized by the folks working for Mario.
the transition at 7min 20 sec sound and visual. freaking great editing.
I was one of those kids in 91, test playing it for the first time at the local store. It was a magnificent time.
I remember when this came out at the mall. They had a system to play at the game store , and there was always 2-3 kids waiting in line to play it.The game, Super Mario World. The time 1991.
That’s an amazing memory!!!
Wal-Mart as well. It was wild.
Yup I remember Sears would have the displays.
I remember the SNES under the Xmas tree at Xmas. Those were the days i was so happy😎. 1991
@@hjames78 me too and my own TV that same year. Simple times
Expertly edited, narrated and written. May just be the best SMW retrospective out there! Great job man
Thanks Tyler! That means a lot coming from a man I respect as much as you!
Dude, you've been my favorite person for the last 4 hours. Amazing work, thank you.
Haha! Thank you! So glad you found the videos and are enjoying the channel! Retro Power Activate!
The ending quote brought tears to my eyes! Thank you so much for this video ♡♡♡
All the different themes being a different variation of those notes is incredible. It just adds another layer of cohesiveness to this masterpiece! It set a bat that few platformers even come close to.
I agree. It’s so cool that the main melody ties it together
This is the best video I've ever seen about Super Mario World. Thank you!
Thank you so much!!
Definitely.
I've been playing this game just recently after about 20 years of not playing, what a fantastic game. It's a masterpiece.
Like fine wine, this game's been holding up very well. Even the GBA memories are kicking up a storm with this.
LMAO "Yoshi is extremely useful. As Mario PUNCHES him in the HEAD his frog like tongue lashes out"
I've never noticed how brutally abusive Mario was to his pal, Yoshi.
just like some humans with whips... whipping the horses so they run faster... sad isn't it... like a slave.
To me he is just pointing the direction
Vegan outrage! Animal abuse! SJW jedi twitter storm!
He's actually pointing. It just looks like a punch lol
This is probably the best retrospective on Mario World I’ve ever seen. Well done!
Super Mario World is definitely one of my favorite Mario games, and still play it from time, to time!! Thanks for the memory lane. Miss those good days!!
I’m really glad I discovered your channel.
The way you present this information is entertaining and educational.
Thank you!
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
I'm glad you included so much about the music. SMW has one of the best game soundtracks of all time, and its genius is so often overlooked.
Actually it has the least amount of variety of any of the games. Its mostly one song with several different arrangements
@@TheYorkMan lol you didnt get it, having variety is not being the best everytime.
The nostalgia is real with this one. This was my first console and first game ever. 5 years old Christmas of 94. Major turning point in my life.
Another classic video on yet another Nintendo classic. You capture that magical moment of the 90s as we anticipated this revelation, inviting both nostalgic and nostalgia-curious an opportunity to feel it all over again. Dare I say that no matter how many times you watch it, you’ll want to hold it close and watch it again!
the sound -- from music to effects -- is extraordinary
Man, this video brought me so many good memories... fantastic work
Thank you so much! It’s funny after all these years it seems so fresh in my mind. I really appreciate it SBW
What an excellent homage to one of the best games ever made. Very well done!
Just beat this game for the first time last night. Unfortunately i was not alive when it came out, but i bought a super nintendo last month and have been having an awesome time playing super mario world. I really believe this is one of the greatest games of all time. The ending music put such a huge smile on my face. I love it!!
Another great video, NESComplex! Please keep them coming!
Great Video
This surprised me as well. As a kid I had convinced myself that to get the extra life you had to hit the box just right by twirling your cape lol.
I remember beating SMW at a kiosk in front of the local Kay Bee Toys when I was a kid. Man growing up in the 80s and 90s was THE BEST ❤️
I agree... the memories are the best! So cool you have that memory of SMW
Ya back when we could play the whole game not some crappy demo lol
as the sound of super mario starts i get this nice feeling of pure joy.
This video has become as nostalgic as the game. I re-visit this video periodically.
This game brings back memories of Christmas morning! This was the best X-Mas present EVER!! #HellaClassic
Same
So jealous lol. I wanted a SNES so bad for Christmas in 91, and my parents got me a genesis. I was slightly disappointed at first. I'm glad they got me one though cuz I probably never would have checked out Sega's games had they not got me it.
1991 was the best christmas of all time i had mario, f zero, pilot wings, and paperboy 2 at launch
You must have been spoiled lol
I don’t think kids will ever experience that joy now
I didnt know the drums come in with yoshi, I didnt know the music basically has the same melody, crazy facts bros
It just goes to show the level of detail Nintendo employed.
It’s quite easy to tell that the leitmotif is the same in each track, only that it comes later in the ghost house track.
Thank you for the retrospective about my favorite #1 game, this really brought tears to my eyes, MAN the nostalgia hits hard
Thank you! I’m glad it was moving for you... I’m always trying to capture a feeling in these videos.
Wow this is a great video. I mean I had some expectations but this level of detail, structure and language use blew me away. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much!!!
Have I ever said how incredible this retrospective is? Also at 6:53 I see Master System games!
Always looking for master system games. And thank you Tyler!!
Just discovered your channel man, and have spent the last hour or so watching your content. Highly impressed! Amazing stuff dude, please keep it up! Thanks
Tank you Sean! Welcome aboard! I'm just glad you're enjoying it.
Great game man
I can't hear a clip of the OST without humming along. So many hours of playing Super Mario World, I'll never forget those tunes.
I personally think New Super Mario Bros on the DS is the strongest of the 2D Mario games, but this game is a close second. Excellent video!
Brother, this is an outstanding video. Still one of my top 5 favorite games.
Great look at the best Mario game of all time Chris! I still remember getting my Super NES in September of 1991 when I was a freshman in high school.
We must be about the same age. I got mine summer of 92 so it had been out for a bit and I’d played mostly at a friend’s house... those were amazing times with family and friends
@@NESComplex Class of '95 here
Thank you for you work on this video and awesome job!
Never knew it was the same melody all the time.... completely blew my mind 🤯
Simply amazing!
Thank you Mr Addict!
I was 4 when this came out and it will always hold a special place in my heart. It's unreal how much charm and character was in this game.
What a great video! I was smiling like a fool the whole time I watched it. Awesome job, Complex!
Thank you for you kind words of encouragement and support! I’m just glad you enjoyed it!!
Amazing explanation video. Thank you much for sharing.
Cool, found a new channel to binge watch!
This was absolutely beautiful. A masterpiece indeed. Thank you for this.
This is just a great tribute to my number one video game of all time 😭
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
After the month I've had so far, I definitely needed to watch this awesome video. Thank you!
Thank you Wheels! I’m glad to know this helped, even if only a little. But honestly... thank YOU for watching
This is by far my favorite Mario game of all time.
J
Mario games will never edge out any game as the best of the year.
It can be argued that it is the greatest game ever.
Absolutely amazing video! 20 minutes well spent. You oh so perfectly reviewed a game (and system) that meant so much to us 90’s kids and you toss in some awesome facts that some of us may not have known. Well done sir. Very well done! I applaud you and I think I speak for all of us 90’s kids in saying, I can’t wait for the next one!
Great Video! Lots of memories were created on my childhood due to SMW
Didn’t expect to tear up at the end. Great vid!
This was the peak of the 2d mario games. It was such a good game. Great soundtrack, a good world and level design, lots of hidden secrets, and fluid controls. It holds up great, and remains to be my favorite game of all time
*Good to see a new upload from one of my favorite channels! Cant wait to see a new Nintendo Power review. Keep up the great content!*
That means a lot! Thank you!
@@NESComplex But of course, sir. It would be an honor if you could find the time to sub to my channel. I dont always upload but when i do i choose Dos XX.
These Retrospectives are amazingly well put together! By far, this is still my favorite game from the Mario franchise. Thank you for these videos.
My pleasure!
@@NESComplex I remember playing Super Mario World. Me and my sister used to play it after we've got home from school.
I'm glad to have this channel randomly suggested to me, cause I'm definitely subscribing. And that Takashi Tezuka quote at the end is why this game's still loved to this day. When you have that kind of approach to making games, you make a classic that's lasted 30 years.
Thanks Todd! When I saw that quote I instantly knew it would be the closing words! It’s a masterpiece!!!
What a beautiful review and retrospective! Please, continue to make videos like these!
Thank you! I absolutely will. I’m NBC already deep into the next one, but they take me a long time!!!
Beautiful piece...this is still my favorite game of all time.
Great video!
Thanks man! I was watching your “more dinosaurs in dinosaur land” rom hack video today actually. Oooo a sleeping Galoomba... lol
Super Mario World was one of the first games I played on a console instead of an old computer - also the first Mario game I played. So it was great to see a retrospective review about one of my favourite games [complete with details I didn't know about] put together with that NESComplex touch. Looking at the editing alone, this must've taken a while to do. Thanks :)
That’s awesome! I always scour articles old and new and search for interviews etc. I’m always hoping to find interesting bit people haven’t heard before. Thank you for the awesome comments! It is great to know that all the work I put in is recognized. Again... fantastic comment!
I was definitely in the key age demographic of "Mario 2" and I never understood the hating on it.
My friends and I loved the dreamlike world of "Mario 2"
Dude, the breakdown of the music themes at 16:24 was really enjoyable! Awesome stuff! 🤙🏼
Thanks man! Aaron told me you posted a video! So good to see an upload
@@NESComplex thank you, it’s great to be back!
Omgosh! 9:50 mark, you said "3 extra men" instead of lives. Oh man! I haven't heard anyone refer to lives as men since the 16-bit era. This video gets a like just for that alone!
Haha! Thank you! Yeah I still use that terminology. It was beat into our heads to say that.
This is the best game of all time.
It really isn't!
@@TheYorkMan It really is

TheYorkMan it is definitely one of the best of all time. It’s the complete package - it has a great visual style and well written, catchy music, it’s amazingly playable and great fun. If it came out today I’d still buy it! I don’t think there’s much that can top it. Waaaaay better than the endless string of unoriginal first-person shooters that have been coming out over the last 20 years.
@@TheZackkary1 I am actually watching one of your videos right now man. I am watching Luigi's mansion 3 walkthrough for the switch. I've recently bought the game.
I really enjoy your videos keep up the good work.
The end credits themes were amazing and easily among my favorites in the entire game.
This game was a cultural reset. Growing up we didn’t have enough money to buy the SNES nor play Mario World, but I remember going to my neighbors house and playing it there and being absolutely bewitched by this game. I was probably 8. Those were the best years.
I haven't played this game in over a decade and the theme for world one still gets stuck in my head on a weekly basis
Such a classic. Easily my favorite of the whole Mario series.
I am also very impressed with how the whole soundtrack is just one melody. Koji Kondo is amazing, whether it's Mario, Star Fox, Zelda or any other game he works on.
