    Imagine being on the platform and you hear “the next train is not scheduled to stop here, please stay away from the platform edge” and a single HST power car awkwardly coming past. Then, 10 minutes later, you hear the same announcement and a set of coaches comes past full of passengers

    Many years ago, when I was a train-spotter.. I photographed a set of HST powercars running close to my home - with no carriages in between. That was back when they were still in the original yellow/blue livery. Still have the photos somewhere.

      @@jessicaandtrains7768 They're not in digital format. They were taken on 35mm film. I have literally tens of thousands of paper photos - amassed over 40 years.

    I was once the only passenger on a 1960s diesel going from Hadfield to Manchester and I swear the driver had it pinned, absolutely full wack. I was scared! 😂

      In BR days they had to have a match coach behind them ,but after privatisation, was not deemed nacessary , i videod a single GNER power car move from donni to neville hill great rare capture.

    Light engine moves (including power cars) limited to 75mph , although power cars have very good brakes the rule still applies. It's fairly rare to see them singular like this as rescue if it fails is only available from the front end and even then via the not quick to apply emergency bar.

      Power cars can brake their own weight (brake force) there’s no technical reason it can’t run at 125mph. Other light locos can run at 100mph like 67’s and 68’s with dispensation granted. Others are limited to 75mph with line speed 90mph or above. Line speed below 90mph is 60mph

      @@stevesje71 Thought all light engine moves were 75mph but you live n learn , I know light engines get nicknamed Scuds because they are nearly unstoppable when there,s poor rail adhesion

      Here in the US light engine moves are limited to 50mph...those limits across the pond are generous

    There is no speed restriction on power cars I drove two back to back many a time! Great fun 0-125 in about 10-15 seconds and the brakes are phenomenal

      People where I work think class 323's and 331's have got great acceleration and they think they're the fastest accelerating train on the network, they're sod all compared to a high powered light weight locomotive running light engine

    I saw a while ago a pair of HST locomotives ( or power cars ) missing their midle coaches on a light engine move from Nevile Hill to Crewe. For me coming from abroad, looked odd when first watched classes 153,155, 156 or 158 resembling coaches that missed their leading locomotive due to the gangway structure at the front end. Nice capture.

    Apparently an HST power car once did an emergency passenger service on the Newquay branch with passengers standing in the luggage area

      It did indeed, the front power car derailed on Luxulyan bank so the few passengers were moved to the luggage van of the rear power car, the gangway doors closed and locked, the power car was then detached and run back to Par.

    The HST Power car on it's own looked strange , but what an amazing sight to see occur!. I have many happy memories of travelling on these iconic machines. The best of British. Derek.

      I believe that when they were being designed having a rear cab was part of the plan, don't know why the idea was dropped

      @@jwalker7567 Think it was just to make shunting easier. It's not like a Class 91 where the blunt end is a full cab laid out just like the pointy end, just a tiny wee space to move it around depots.
      Production ones didn't have it, probably because they were designed to run in fixed formations of 2+however many mk3s (depends on region + operator)

    That braking power of those power cars is amazing. They have both disc brakes and brake blocks, known as tread brakes.

    It wasn't till the driver got to the station and realised he left the rake behind lol. Jokes aside . Great video. Personally I've never seen a class 43 as they don't hit the southern network, and to see one "naked" lol is quite something... cheers. 🚂🔥
