- Wow.. There can't be many better sights/sounds that seeing/hearing a Deltic at Kings Cross - Including multiple engine starts!
See D9000 'Royal Scots Grey' working the Steam Dreams weekend tour to Edinburgh for LSL on 23/11/23.
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching.

18 cylinders 36 pistons 3 crank shafts . Two stroke . A masterpiece of engineering.
Absolutely incredible the deltics are! Subscribed 😊
Nothing sounds (or feels if you're close enough) like two Napier Deltic engines giving it what for.........takes me back to my childhood.
Good memories Harry 🙏👍
I totally agree, tough tools for tough jobs.
My favourite diesel loco!
Absolutely
Yes, when it's at speed, no other diesel loco sounds as good. But when it departs from stations it's not as good as either the 125 (Valenta) or the class 68 with its multiple noises and deep bass. But yea, when it's at full speed it's the best.
I plugged in my subwoofer especially for this video. Insane sound.
Good plan! 👌👍
i saw her up here in Glasgow at the Eastfield depot ten years ago but she was in br livery and only running on one engine from what i can remember. she looks magnificent in those colours.
I can still vividly remember seeing, for the first time, the prototype DP1 Deltic pulling in to the south end of Peterborough (north) station 65 years ago in the summer of 1958 on a London bound working. As an avid 11 year old train spotter I was well aware of the coming of the diesel age, and knew that steam's days were numbered. The Deltic prototype was so unique as a design, using those twin Napier two stroke marine diesel engines that made a sound like nothing else. Standing next to her on that platform as it opened up when pulling away made a sound and vibration that sent shivers through this eleven year old, I thought it was the best engine noise I'd ever heard, an opinion, it would seem, that still holds true today!
nothing quite like the sound of a 2 cycle diesel whether it be Deltic or EMD, they both sound like railroading, speed, power, efficiency and stamina.
So lovely to see & hear a Deltic
The horn, hiss of the brakes being released and the opening up of a napier never fails to send a shiver down my spine 😍 a textbook deltic departure by the driver too, I hope those multiple start ups aren't a sign of anything, very similar to its first trip from KX earlier this year when they lost a unit and were trying to restart it at Grantham and she wasn't having any of it
Beautiful just beautiful. Thanks for sharing 👍
Great video of two gorgeous machines. 😊
A proper Loco With Red and Cream coaching stock what a sight great vid
i love these unusual sounding locomotives good video as always 🥰
A great sound, a great look, a great loco!
I did a rail tour of the US in May. The GE P42 locos they use there are the second loudest I've stood next to, but I think for sheer microphone overdriving capabilities the deltics still have the edge.
That noise when they start up!
I’ve replayed that clip a few times already today 🤣👍
The old and the new departing /arriving !!
hello l like the class 55 running on its second engine at 4:13 and you can hear the priming pump while its running on its second engine and I do like the second engine on the class 55 more at 4:13 than the Frist engine on the class 55
Got it at doncaster br jcn was 3 mins early and flew through sounding superb.
My grandad used drive Scots grey had uniform BR and wear a cap with peak sometimes uniform one old ones had BR lion on sliver buttons smart grandad polished shoes tie gave his badge 50 years on the railway badge had a track on it and blue and red. brought me home station caps from friends retired different lines on the caps red sliver and gold to station manager strips on his shirts and his little black bag with logs inn il used to watch the class 55s full speed through grden City on ecml early late 60s and 70s 😅noise was great coming towards you from bridge and old signals used lift up noise so knew something was coming down the main line
I caught it just south of York. Great video btw 😊
Brings back memories of a bygone time great video.
Nice capture. Amazing to see the Royal Scots Grey at Kings Cross. I caught the 55022 at Brookmans Park
Very enjoyable, but why the multiple starts? Seems rather odd. Nevertheless, the loco looked and sounded in great condition. A credit to the owners and English Electric.
Majestic and almost magical.
Catching her on the way back sunday hope to get her flying like hell through retford 😀😀😀😀 i vollunteer for the dps the noise is fantastic 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Quite the soundtrack 👌💯
Thanks for sharing this……the charge of the royal scots grey
Beautiful
5:16 u just caught Francis 😂😭
5:07 is that Francis?? 😂😂
How much better does Kings Cross look now all 3 tunnels are in use!
KX remodelling project which reopened that tunnel also raised permissible speed through the station throat, so (in theory at least) Deltic drivers can pull the handle back sooner than they ever could in BR days😀
Excellent mate Very Nice 👍👍
Great video, just a minor point, pity it is displaying 1A16, when it is leaving the Cross, going north, surely a northbound head code would have been better.. but I bet this brings back many memories of those lucky enough to remember a line up of Deltics at KX, in the 60s to their end in 1981..note the Mk4 set arriving alongside the platform to the right, around 5:45 into the video. There is nothing the "V" of a Deltic exhaust.
D9000 immaculately turned out 😀👍 Have the Napiers just been overhauled? Very little white smoke.
Had to keep things as clean as possible in case Sadiq Khan was knocking about!! 🥴

An unreliable source tells me that, out of shot next to the fuel tank filler is a new Adblue filler cap. Probably.
Lovely footage. Thank u for sharing.😊
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Excellent video.
Great video as always 👍
I would have loved to see D9000 hand to tour over to 60007 but it’s not happening at my local ECML station even though I thought it was plus I have work.
I’ll show you the video later on today 👍
I could feel the ground shaking stood next to one at idle on the gwr.
I still remember as a little kid at Doncaster Station in the 1960's standing alongside the first Deltic I had ever seen.....even then I realised it was something very special - with the platform shaking as it strained to be let loose!
Great footage, just subscribed 😀
Thanks very much 🙏👍
Another cracking video well done great camera work as usual I am really enjoying your lovely videos and camera work keep your lovely camera work up I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on UA-cam bye for now Philip
The trailing diesel locomotive seems to stop in the tunnel while the Azuma is coming in on the left. Did the Deltic stop?
Let's hope she makes it this time!!
Never in doubt 💪👍
She's In York Parcels Sidings tonight
@@calebmumby5803 Let's hope she's wrapped up nice n warm, we all know what the Yorkshire weather is like 👍
Why do they always run a Class 47 at the rear? Backup in case of failure of the Deltic, or is it pushing to reduce load on the Deltic ?
The inbound working to Kings Cross from LSL’s depots at either Crewe or Southall needs to switchback on itself so the rear loco is used for that - It also provides insurance also in case of any issues. 👍
Great video. What camera did you use?
Most of this was on an iPhone 15 Pro as it was up close filming..
hi brings back my teenage years. pity KC york rd is not there any more, D9000 well turned out, well done to the team responsible.,but why don't the clowns get the original one back on track ?
Restoring the two Deltic engines installed in DP1 to running condition is not feasible. The engines (Type E158, D18-12) although similar, differ from those used in British Rail Class 55 locomotives (Type E169, D18-25B). Aside from the original issue with the severe oil leak in the phasing gear cover, significant engine components were removed for use as spare parts for the Royal Navy prior to DP1 being donated to the Science Museum as the locomotive was not owned by British Railways
Re-painted and numbered since I last saw it, then 55022.... Is it still owned by the same guy?
Wow that was long
Hold on, was this today?
Yes
Does anyone know where deltic is staying until sundays return or whats the dep time off york plz?
Parcel Sidings at York at Southern end of Platform 11 is where I believe it’ll rest up
It’ll leave York around 4:30pm
@@Bolshevik_beekeeper ok cheers
@@graemekornicki6810 You can see it on Railcam UK live cam at York
In my day as a secondman we always sounded the horn on departing whats going on with these silent departures.
It did sound its horn before departing though?
What's causing all the smoke? Is it doing a DPF regen ? ;-)
11 coaches plus a `47` what does that weigh?
most mk1/2 coaches are 39-42 tons x11 plus 142 ton class 47 say 600 tons that's a fair weigh to drag.
I wonder if they will, at some stage, change the law in the UK to allow the sale of anoraks in colours other than black.
Why did it stop with the 47 still in the tunnel?
I’m not sure - It was only a brief stop though.
Thanks@@trainsplanes
Signal stop, probably awaiting the rear of the arriving Azuma to clear. The signal at the tunnel was showing a yellow aspect, so the next signal was red.
RSG still pulling the crowds in then......
Wonderful sights and sounds. We should be so proud of our wonderful railways, yet so much is dragged down into the pigs trough of political greed by strikes and disputes by those who don’t care about our railways and the service they could provide. Just their own egos.
Not much of a trip though. 100 yards down the line and then stops in the tunnel 😄
That looked like a signal stop? The signal entering the tunnel looks like it's yellow, so the next one is red. It might of had to stop for the arriving Azuma to clear?
That second engine doesnt sound like a deltic at all i will say!
That’s very true! 🤣🤣
I lived through the end of steam and all of the rest of the railways of Britain in my time. Times when these, in the main were not even glanced at. Nice restorations, but far to clean. Sadly you cannot recreate the romance and atmosphere of the past.
