Geoff has an opera trained voice. He truly has a beautiful voice. He announces his words so perfect. He has a tremendous range. He is a true baritone and can hits that E5 so clean and quick it makes tenors be in awe. My favorite band ever! Every band member plays their instrument exceptionally well. Having dual lead guitars is always a bonus when they play in harmony so well. The power this band creates is over the top and Geoffs vocal power is angelic! He has so much power but its also like chocolate! He's in his own league singing. Im just sad they spilt up. Ive seen them 11 times, 1 time w/o Geoff. And I've seen Geoff twice. Always great. Operation Mindcrime is the greatest album ever. You gotta sit down with NO interruptions and listen to it. 1 more point.... their lyrics are always powerful! God bless you guys
Tate, along with Dio, Dickinson and Halford comprise the Mount Rushmore of metal vocalists.
@@shanebrown4146 Yes, Dr. X.
Add Latorre Hes an ELITE VOCALIST
Totally Agree with those 4!
I would throw Chris Cornell into the discussion, but that is a VERY nice 4 you got there!
@@brettkenschaft4239 You can probably tell I'm a child of 70's/80's metal. But, Cornell is a legend and would probably make to 90's/2000's cut.
Also, Ann Wilson deserves a place as probably the greatest female rock vocalist and #5 on the Mount.
Their album "Operation: Mindcrime" should be listened to in its entirety, start to finish. It's all one big story. Excellent, as well.
Facts! 🍻🤘
One of the best albums ever made.
@@shanebrown4146 My personal favorite is the Operation: LiveCrime DVD. Still watch it a couple of times a year.
Very relevant to today too
@@shanebrown4146 yeah. Love me some old school Fear Factory. I also try to get reactors to watch Queensryche Unplugged. No takers.....yet.
Geoff Tate was in his hey day at this point and he was virtually untouchable. He was my vocal idol from the moment that I heard Queen of The Ryche. Unbelievable vocal range and always spot on.. way before autotune.

I saw him do a tour called Jeoff Tate Operation Mindcrime a few years ago. The entire band was new (and honestly not great), but Geoff's vocals were still on point, and he's in his late 50s.

The whole band is just supreme
"Eyes of a Stranger" has always been one of my favorite Queensryche tunes
The entire album Operation Mindcrime. ''nuff said.
Operation Mindcrime was a BAD-ASS album
Its my fav song of all time. Every year I go through my music and try and decide if something can take it's place... and I've tried and LOVED so many great tracks and differnt genres over the years.... but nothing has been able to match the utter magnificence of and emotional effect Eyes has on my mindset. It just places me into my best headspace.
When Queensryche debuted in 1983, the Seattle band was the American take on heavy metal bands like Judas Priest & Iron Maiden... their 4-song EP was so good, fans couldn't believe it was a demo! And the singer Geoff Tate was just an incredible talent at the time. The band was signed very quickly and debuted their 1st album 'The Warning' in 1984... but as great as the band sounded, people didn't get it at the time. They were more popular in Japan than in the US by 1985. Guitarist Chris DeGarmo was the band's leading songwriter, and the other members were Michael Wilton (guitars), Eddie Jackson (bass), and Scott Rockenfield (drums)... both DeGarmo & Jackson were backing vocalists for Queensryche.
Unlike most metal bands, Queensryche were always looking for a new direction to take their music. In 1986, the album 'Rage for order' brought in electronic sound to give them a futuristic feel... But it wasn't until 1988, when the concept album 'Operation: Mindcrime' broke them big in the US... Hoping to capture a mainstream sound, the 'Empire' album took them to a commercial peak in 1990.
Unfortunately, the 90's brought in the alternative rock scene, and Queensryche started to drift away from heavy metal music... despite their success, their 1994 album 'Promised land' was a largely acoustic record w/ dark themes of disappointment... In 1997, Queensryche stepped completely out of the metal sound & delivered a basic rock album 'Hear in the now frontier' ...largely written by DeGarmo. It was a commercial disappointment, and their record label ceased operations that year. Disillusioned by the music business, Chris DeGarmo quit the band in 1998.
Unwilling to end the band, lead singer Geoff Tate rallied the remaining members Wilton, Jackson & Rockenfield, and recruited guitarist/ producer Kelly Gray and released the 'Q2K' album in 1999, but the record sales were again disappointing. Gray was fired in '02 and DeGarmo helped co-write their 2003 album 'Tribe'... but the non-metal sound was not bringing back the fans. Mike Stone (guitar) joined the band for the tour.
Around 2006, the members of Queensryche claimed that singer Geoff Tate was using studio musicians to 'substitute' the band members to record Queensryche albums... starting w/ the sequel album 'Operation: Mindcrime II'... which did better in sales. However, Tate's using studio musicians on the next few Queensryche albums 'American soldier' (2009) and 'Dedicated to chaos' (2011) proved to be creatively disappointing... In 2012, Geoff Tate was fired after an altercation w/ the band members after they voted to terminate Susan Tate (Geoff's wife) as Queensryche's manager... Lawsuits were filed and the split was ugly.
Following the split, Michael Wilton (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) and guitarist Parker Lundgren, opted to hire new vocalist Todd LaTorre in 2012 and returned to their heavy metal roots w/ the self-titled album in 2013, and 'Condition Human' album in 2015. Geoff Tate has been touring as a solo artist since, and relies heavily on Queensryche songs in concert, having given up his rights to the name.
In 2017, drummer Scott Rockenfield took a break, but has since remained out of Queensryche... Former Kamelot drummer Casey Grillo & former touring guitarist Mike Stone, have been added to Queensryche's line-up today w/ Michael Wilton (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) & Todd LaTorre (vocals) and are working on a new album.
Geoff Tate is absolutely one of the greatest Metal vocalists. I did an interview with him for a magazine back in '89. It was funny because he kept bumming my Marlboro's during the interview. True story!
Dude kind a of the same thing happen to me I saw Queensryche in concert around that time and got lucky to meet them after the concert on there tour bus and the lead guitar player sorry I forgot his name and i feel bad about that being a guitar player myself but he was bumming Marlboro's from me. But he was cool he got the whole bands autograph for me.

The whole Operation Mindcrime album beginning to end. I was fortunate to see Queensryche perform Operation Mindcrime in its entirety once and I've seen Geoff Tate solo do it twice. I saw Queensryche perform Promised Land in its entirety once on the Promised Land Tour. They performed the whole album, half of Mindcrime and other stuff. I saw Geoff Tate solo perform Rage For Order and Empire in their entirety too.
@@mikenastasi8927 Wonderful. My first time seeing QR was in 1985 at L'Amours in Brooklyn and I've seen them numerous times throughout the years and multiple tours. OMC was a fantastic album. My favorite band.
Can't believe that the one time I miss you guys live is when this finally won a poll! Yes, Geoff Tate was right up there with Dio, Bruce Dickinson, and Rob Halford as the most amazing metal vocalists of that generation. He went through a period later on where his voice was in rough shape, and he got fired from Queensryche about 10 years ago (not because of his voice though), but over the last couple years he's worked on his voice and is delivering really solid shows as a solo artist supported by a new band. He performs a lot of the classic Queensryche songs and although he can't sustain the high notes the same way he used to he is still very impressive.
I bet he can still hit them.
Bach
Tate's vocals are elite. Arguably the best metal vocalist in history.
...that isn't Ronnie James Dio
@@DanJackson1977 I put Dio in second next to Geoff, then Bruce Dickinson third. But that is just my personnel opinion.
He's 1 of them definitely.
@@allisterfiend_2112 I have in my opinion Bruce , Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, in that order and then my favorite singer Klaus meine fir the scorpions also my favorite band.
Yeah, I'd put Tate above Dio. I'd also put Ray Alder from Fates Warning up there.
There's a lot of "vocal coach reacts" vids of this track and one of the less obvious things they all tend to remark on is how amazing it is that Chris Degarmos's backing vocals have enough range and power to actually hold up Geoff Tate's inhuman talent. Degarmo's voice would have been good enough to front a lot of other 80s bands.
I seen a few of those reactors , only one mentioned backing vocals
Amen!
Yeah it’s actually shocked me the first time I heard this. The whole band was talented and the drummer…man oh man with those crashes.
Yes, you were commenting on how pure and smooth Geoff''s tone is. This is another thing I love about his voice. And he actually SINGS those high notes (E5's in this song), he doesn't scream them.
He's classically trained as well. He has so much expression, power, range, control, great and well-placed vibrato.... he's just crazy good!
Geoff never took 1 lesson in opera. He did however take 6 lessons over 6 months (1 per month) with a local vocal coach in Seattle who had many other students including 2 members of Queensryche (Chris DeGarmo and Eddie Jackson). Geoff was just a born natural talent. Here is a brand new 2022 interview of Geoff shooting down the "trained opera singer" myth that has plagued him for 4 decades.
ua-cam.com/video/hN_PuYp--Eg/v-deo.html
@@MetalMcfly
I had heard this interview before, in which he tells about his early training. But I assumed he wasn't going into full details because he had mentioned in a DIFFERENT interview, probably years ago, that opera was very constricting. And that you had to sing something exactly as it was written with no deviations or improvising, and that that didn't appeal to him. This sounded like, at some point, he was considering going in that direction. But maybe he was just discussing these things with his aunt, who, I understand was an opera singer herself.
And maybe the 6 lessons he did have drew on the classical style, technique- wise. I've heard voice coaches who do first time reaction videos, and don't know anything about him at first, say that the way he "approaches" and places the vowels (and other technical things that I can't recall exactly) sounded like he'd had classical training. Maybe everyone just surmised and extrapolated that he had from little bits and pieces of information that are mentioned in his interviews.
Whatever the full answer is, it's obvious he also has a HUGE amount of natural talent, and is the kind of guy that would put the work into perfecting whatever abilities he had.
One of the best Queensryche songs. Check out the entire Operation Mindcrime album.
This can't be said enough times. One of the best albums of all time, IMO.

Geoff Tate's voice is very theatrical and operatic. Very clean and strong. One of the best vocals in metal.
He is one of the best vocalist in MUSIC not just metal
Wow .. Hard to imagine this was 38 years ago . I went to a small club in 84. Paid five dollars at the door . Queensryche was going to play that night . I got a barstool on a balcony overlooking the side of the stage . about 10 feet away . all night Geoff kept on pointing to me and the rest of the band too . It was during this songs lead , Geoff climbed up and took my hand and stayed with me for awhile . That night I felt like Queensryche was there just for me !! .. They sounded perfect !! . Take Hold of The Flame .. The song is about struggle and learning to believe you can .
Lucky enough to have seen them live in their heyday, such a great group and singer!
I'm so jealous. Hearing this and Queen Of The Reich live in person in this era must have been mind blowing.
Hi Todd
One of the greatest rock singers on earth ever !
Geoff Tate sang this song at the end of a 2 hour live incredible performance & proved to the entire world how powerful & talented he was as a vocalist. Tate is considered as one of the GOAT Metal singers ever, though he is definitely a shadow of what he once was able to do. But we all are getting old & have to accept the wear & tear on his vocal chords would probably fully mute most people.
Was an encore performance too wasn't it?
@@RafaleC77th no, last song of the set! He still had all that power??
@@patches6309 That is a helluva thing. To still be going That hard after a 2+ hour performance.
@@RafaleC77th yeah, agreed. He got major props from alot of big Rock magazines after that performance. I remember reading Rock magazines all the time back in the 80's and I was impressed by how many critics praised Geoff back then. He really was at the top of the food chain as far as lead vocalist back then.
I saw some of the best singers at one show, Maiden, Queensryche and Halford band.
Guitarist Chris DeGarmo an amazing musician & singer in his own right definitely was the driving force behind QR creativity & it showed after he left. They were never the same after Promised Land. I met everyone in the band except Chris. Geoff was the most approachable super nice guy then something happened that led to the divorce. Todd has taken over the vocals.
Chris and Scott banging it out. unmatched.
The original band is in my hard rock / metal top 10, they were amazing and still listen to them in regular rotation.
Queensryche was never the same after Chris left. Him & Geoff’s harmonies together were incredible.
Geoff had the voice, but Chris DeGarmo was the principal force behind their songs. He had a great ear for melodies and could incorporate them and some classical elements flawlessly into metal songs. He's also one hell of a guitarist.
One of their best tracks and thanks for watching the live video from back in the day. They were one of the best hard rock / metal hybrids of the 80s and 90s and could rock out with anyone on the bill, I saw them with Sabbath, Priest, Maiden and other great bands of the period and they always put on a great set, no matter what. I saw Operation Mindcrime live and it was one of the few times it felt Floyd-like in the hall from the incredible concept album, with all the bells and whistles, going on.
For more classic Queensryche, try The Lady Wore Black, Sanctuary and On the Road to Madness. They always deliver, Enjoy! 🎸
*So excited seeing this today....I hope it is their Live - Tokyo performance. But I bet it will be a lyric video...given how Brad loves to read while listening to music. Here we go! ......I'm back; Dang! You are watching the video I hoped for, yes! I was into this band in the early 80s...I had these earlier albums. I didn't buy their later albums because those songs were played often enough on the radio. Another great EARLY song by them is "Queen of the Reich. Hey Lex...his name is Geoff Tate. You need to hear Queen of the Ryche sometime, which was the first song on their first EP. I got hold of that EP somehow when it first came out and it blew me away. That first scream that begins the song made me an instant fan. In my opinion they blow Maiden out of the water.
I didn't even recognize Silent Lucidity as Queensryche when I first heard it.
They are definitely old school metal of the best kind. There were different vocal styles in old school metal. There was the more pure and soaring kind of vocals of bands like Queensryche, and the harsher, grittier and more throaty vocals of bands like Accept (which has little or nothing to do with drugs, btw, it's just a particular style), and many variations.

Queensryche is an amazing band, but yes, it's definitely better if _Silent Lucidity_ isn't the first of their songs you hear. It was made a good few decades in when they were expanding their range and trying new things. If you want some of their more old school metal songs you could try "I Don't Believe In Love", "Operation Mindcrime", or "Empire".
Almost any of their songs from the 70s-2000 were amazing, but "Anybody Listening?" is next level and definitely one you should listen to.

One of the only bands that sounded just like the CD when I heard them live. Rush and King Diamond are the others that comes to mind. They open for Metallica on the And Justice For All….tour. Daytona Beach, Ocean Center. I will never forget it.
Great reaction. One of the best original lineup s imo. Never the same after Chris DeGarmo left. They have so many great songs in their catalogue. Please keep doing reactions to them. NM156, Is There Anybody Listening, Operation Mindcrime entire album is stellar. Your reaction to them made my day👍
This was supposedly the next to last song of a concert…..can you imagine his voice abilities.
Finally getting to a great performance...Geoff Tate premiere rock vocalist..
There's that unforgettable Geoff Tate voice. Queensryche is a kick ass band. You do find men that have that angelic sound in their voice. Bruce Dickinson has that type of voice. You need to listen to Myles Kennedy too and react to some Alter Bridge or something.
Saw them on their Empire tour where they played all of Operation Mindcrime and some songs from the Empire album. It was amazing! They sounded as good or better live than they did on their albums.
Live...Zero auto-tune....These guys were/are a machine.
It would be a project, but like Metal Mark said, it would be incredible if you guys did the entire Operation Mindcrime album.
It's an amazing concept album. With the way you guys do lyric videos, you would really get the story. Even though some of the songs do stand alone, you really have to listen to the album beginning to end to understand it. So...definitely a long one if you guys decided to do it. Fingers crossed. 🤞
He definitely can sing!!!
"BEAUTIFUL 😍 ❤ HIS VOICE IS AMAZING 👏
The bands lead vocalist Geoff Tate is a classically trained singer with a 4-octive vocal range. And the lead guitarist Chirs DeGarmo has nicely added backing vocals. They both blend very well together with their harmonies. Geoff and Chris wrote this song. However, the majority of the songs are written by Chris DeGarmo. Another classically trained hard rock and heavy metal singer with a 4-octive vocal range is Mark Harnell for the band TNT. With songs like "Desperate Night", "King of Seven Seas" and "10,000.00 Lovers".
Great if not one of the GREATEST voices! Nuff said!
I think Lex got confused on this one. I went back and looked and they did NOT do "Silent Lucidity" yet. Their first Queensryche song was "Empire".
Check out "Eyes of a stranger" - Queensrÿche, another great song!
The origional line up and Scott Rockinfield drum set wow!
Geoff Tate was classically trained and he did theater I believe in HS. I'm pretty sure he was the lead in the King and I
He trained to be an opera singer. Met them before back in 96’. Seen them several times. Oh and that’s live. No auto tune crap.
the majority of all the GREATEST Heavy metal vocalists we previously opera singers
.this was the early and classic Ryche..great band back in the day
Check out Queen of the Reich and Lady Wore Black from their first EP
Queensryche is one of my top 3 bands. I've seen them live three times. Scott Rockenfield is also one of my favorite drummers. By the way, Lex lookin like Mickey Mouse with her hair up like that. 😂😂😂
Dig In to Queensryche's catalog. They have an unbelievable concept album called Operation Mindcrime, and you will also like a lot of the stuff from the follow on to that called Empire.
Geoff Tates voice is a masterpiece seen him live twice my favorite metal singer
Geoff Tate & Chris DeGarmo were one of the best writing duo’s of their time, and they were Queensryche!
Geoff’s voice was 2nd to none in his prime, he had control no matter what octave and always put on a performance at the same time.
A version of Queensrÿche is still making records and touring today, no disrespect, they are still just a tribute band to the original.
Yup. One of them moved on to be a pilot. And the other ran the band into the ground before being fired.
