Absolutely. Operation Mindcrime was his baby. I love his guitar style. As a guitar player myself, he offered so much. A lot of neat modulations and chord progressions on Mindcrime in particular, but really all of his stuff. This guy talked about Chris's solo but his rhythm guitar was incredible. Michael too. And the rhythm section, second to none.
I heard, though I don't know, he quit because they were giving him grief over the writing on "Hear In The Now Frontier." I liked it fine. Their goal, as I understood it, was to write from every different metal genre. So, it didn't have the same commercial success, it still had its qualities. My thoughts anyway, miss them.

Guess what? I used to call him Geoffy because every time they came to my town, I was there. I’m pretty sure he knew who I was as an audience member because I was very responsive, loud and physical. I didn’t just sit there. I was a fan from the very beginning and have seen them live I think about 21 times. Geoff would respond to me from the stage and I think he started to recognize me as a fixture when they toured TEXAS. So, I felt kinda like we knew each other and I nicknamed him Geoffy. They always played clean live and put on a great show. But some nights they are really ON and it bumps up a notch. Those are the shows you want to be at. Full Power live energy with the right vibe. The Band IS ON!! ROCK PRIVILEGE!!

Range, musicality, expressiveness, showmanship. The whole package. The word "operatic" is overused in popular music context (like "symphonic"), but it's the one that come to my mind, not because his technique but due to the richness of his phrasing.
Queensryche was the unclassifiable result of musicians that grew up loving and listening to opera (Tate's aunt was a singer), Pink Floyd, Rush and other music styles and had the fresh influence of the NWOBHM. And let those influences emerge in their songs.

Baltimore MD . It was summer of 84 and my friend told me Queensryche was playing Hammerjacks .. Paid five bucks at the door and wandered around and found a seat .. It was a bar overlooking the left side of the stage , Pulled up a stool and waited .. Then it happened . I was flipping out and so excited , I couldn't believe the clarity and I couldn't believe the vantage of being a few feet away and overlooking this amazing spectacle . .During this song , Geoff kept on looking at me and pointing " Take Hold " and then , Then he climbed up to me atop the PA system , Shook my hand and stayed with me during the lead .. Something I will never forget . I was fateful to me .. I needed that lift in life to keep going , To dream big and fight .. Last year I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and giving a few months to live . Throughout my experience in this horror . I would play this song , remember that night and cry Take Hold .. For some miracle . The tumors on my brain have vanished and I live ..

Just proves that greatness transcends time and will always be appreciated.
I take a bit of umbrage to your assessment that the solos are never mind-blowing. Trust me, they have the skill to MELT your mind, if ever they wished, but they were far more concerned (thankfully) with melody and song-structure.

Queensryche with a devastating live performance. The best live rock vocal of all time. Just a timeless fantastic song. Thank you for this one!
Geoff Tate has been on tour for the last few years, with no original members, and is still absolutely fantastic. Covid shut sown his 2020 tour, but there are lots of videos.

As a vocal coach, I can assure you that This man has trained and practiced extremely hard to achieve the magnificent head voice he has, and then drop to the warm baritone! I don't know what this man is doing today, but if he had a decent clean lifestyle I'm sure he probably still sounds great!

I saw them four times on the Empire tour. 6-7 years after this. From the second show of the US tour, to the third to last, they did this song as an encore each time. Sounded just like this all those years later. Plus all of Empire and Operation Mindcrime, both in their entirety, complete with appropriate theatrics. Amazing! By the way, Geoff acted out the part of Nikki from Mincrime while singing it. It was basically a rock opera. He even shot a hoop on "Best I Can" from Empire. So, yeah, he had great interaction. There is a concert video they released of "Operation Livecrime." Worth the watch if you are a fan and can find a copy. Its exactly what I saw with few edits. And Pamela Moore sung live on "Suite Sister Mary" at that concert. Madison Wisconsin, I think.
I took my boy to see them years later, after Chris left. Geoff could still do this song. Although not quite as high, but almost. Only a very familiar ear could tell, he transposed it so professionally. Man, I miss them and that entire era.

I would recommend the studio version of "The Lady Wore Black"... My personal Queensryche favorite. "Take Hold of the Flame" does come in at a very close second place though.

Geoff Tate live is AMAZING. So glad you guys and so many others are discovering some of the greatest bands ever. I saw Queensrych for the first time in 1984, a small club before they broke out. They weren't on MTV yet, but once they made their first music video, club days were over and it was welcome to the arena show. Keep digging! So many great bands from the metal years.

I was fortunate to see this tour and just about all their tours in Sacramento, CA. And yes, they are this good. They got even better (if possible) on the Rage, Mindcrime and Building Empires tours. The Empire tour is when they peaked....playing the Operation Mindcrime in it's entirely. Geoff Tate's stage performance made you believe the Mindcrime story. Check out the Empire live concert.

I'm a fan of Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Ronnie James Dio.
I've always felt like Geoff's voice was the overall best of the bunch.
    Great reaction, btw.
I love seeing young people's reactions to the classic greats!

Geoff Tate was an absolute god in the 1980's.. contender for best male vocalist on the planet. Unfortunately he lost much of his voice going into the 90's. Their best music is also from Tate's "strong era" (in my opinion, it is very very difficult to top a successive album chain of "The Warning", "Rage For Order", and "Operation Mindcrime" (one of the best albums i've ever heard, still gives me chills to this day).

agree completely on those 3 albums and Operation Mindcrime is still my go to cd for road trips. It came out the year I left for college and my roommate and I were complete Queensryche fanatics. Lost my friend 4 years ago, and these bring back such good memories of youth, when we were invincible and would live forever. Now in my 50's, I appreciate what a special time that was.

I could name sooo many songs but if I had to choose:
Roads to Madness...hands down showcases the complete package that is Geoff Tate and Queensryche. You would have to stick with the studio version as I haven't found a live version with decent sound quality.

I subscribed 😉 Especially if I get to see more reactions to Queensryche! Geoff Tate is fantastic for sure. He's a baritone so he stands out among the rock & metal singers with those low, rounded & rich tones, but his range is incredible at 4 octaves. He trained with Maestro David Kyle for a handful of lessons studying Bel-Canto technique (opera) to learn how to sign for hours at a time and probably picked up techniques that opera, classical and theater performers use like phrasing, breath control, etc., but the rest is just natural talent.
I would love if someone -anyone!! - would react to Queensryche's MTV Unplugged performance. It was amazing, especially "I Will Remember" and "The Killing Words". Also don't overlook their version of Scarborough Fair. Other QR suggestions: The entire album of Operation: Mindcrime, live versions of Walk in The Shadows and Lady Wore Black (both from their epic Building Empires tour), Empire, Silent Lucidity, Anybody Listening?, Someone Else, Roads To Madness and of course Queen of the Reich.
