7. Take Hold of the Flame [Queensrÿche - Live in Tokyo 19840805]
• 7. Take Hold of the Fl...
This is Queensrÿche's 2nd concert in Japan and outside North America, luckily for us fans it was captured on film -- it was later released in 1985 on VHS and Laserdisc, but has long been unavailable and out of print. This having once been officially released on video, it was originally edited so the tracklisting was different (see the playlist link in the bottom), and it contains some vocal overdubs (like Geoff laughing in the beginning of Nightrider, as well as other bits throughout the show). This bootleg is already to be found on UA-cam, but in rather poor quality, so I thought I'd upload a better one.
The concert itself is great, the band is playing fiercely and Geoff is screaming and wailing to the best of his ability, nailing those high notes.
All of the songs are great versions, even if they contain overdubs throughout.
Enjoy!

Every reaction video for this song starts out the same. “Oh, what a nice song. He sings so nicely...”. Then Geoff hits that E5. Jaws hit the floor. Minds get blown.
i'm always sitting there...wait for it....waiiiiiiit foooor it.....NOW
And rarely does the listener pay due respect to the fact that this is live in the times when there was no autotune and all this cheating software.
Plus he’s a natural baritone capable of moving directly to E5 in the blink of an eye.
I LOVE introducing someone to Geoff lol
Yep
“Did you hear that?!” She asked. Yes mam…for about 40 years I’ve been hearing that!
😂i was just about to comment the same exact thing!! It is still as incredible to listen to as the first time.
He hits E5 three times in that song and he sustains it perfectly and does it on call and effortlessly.
Even more insane is that he’s a natural baritone. It’s mind blowing.
5 times. 3 sustained.
One of the most underrated rock band
The ENTIRE Operation: Mindcrime album! You won't be sorry.
Maybe Operation: LiveCrime instead? Incredible all the way through.
this! Every single song is a masterpiece on its own, and together they form one of the greatest concept albums ever.
@@johnsoma6485 even better!
@@johnsoma6485 anything besides mindcrime at the moore
The Best.
Geoff Tate & Chris DeGarmo were a magical combo - they were Queensrÿche!
Geoff in his prime was pure sonic brilliance with his range & control, and he made it look so effortless to.
He shattered every set of ear drums at that concert, and by the way he strutted around on stage, you could tell he knew it. 😎
Yet another music gift from the Seattle area..
This was one of the 5 best ever bands of heavy metal.
I maybe a little biased in this, Geoff's vocals are second to none
Well... back then they were second to none. Now, unfortunately, they're second to all.
@@Tobyc1315 Agreed. Back then he had no equal.
Like i always said...Ronnie james dio on steroids.....
I saw him last year before covid in Houston. He is still extremely great and he is 60.
@@Tobyc1315 This is what happens when you simply blow everyone else out of the water with gobs of talent. It is impossible for that kind of ability to last, and virtually all great singers lose their voices, just like all guitarists eventually lose their playing ability in the later years.
Geoff Tate, Queensryche's vocalist, is considered by many in the know to be one of the all time best metal vocalists! His power, control, delivery, and range was second to none! Incidentally, 'Take Hold Of The Flame' was from what is considered a 'master class' metal masterpiece album called 'The Warning'. A must own!
Geoff in his prime was beyond incredible
Its been said but worth repeating. Operation Mindcrime - pure genius from first to last.
Live. No auto tune in those days. Amazing. Amazing. I always knew he was a great vocalist. The band...on spot.
Yeah, and note for note from the album. They really took their songwriting seriously, and never deviated one bit, that is until they went Alternative Rock, that is.
Yup! You either nailed the note, as Geoff did here, or you looked bad in the attempt. No Autotune safety net!
Take Hold of the Flame... one of their greats...out of so many greats!
"Road To Madness"
"The Lady Wore Black"
"I Don't Believe In Love"
"Suite Sister Mary"
"Eyes of a Stranger"
"Another Rainy Night"
"Is There Anybody Listening"
And that's just a start!
"Road To Madness" is my favorite road trip song.
You forgot Queen Of The Ryche.
One of the beat vocalist in rock history.and this was live!
"We realise that fate must hide its face from those who try"....damn Geoff
Probably the best rock vocal performance ever captured on tape. So amazing. Great song too!
Right Side of My Mind ( the live version) is another amazing vocal performance by Geoff
This is live, at the end of the set. Working musicians you know how special this is.
Queensryche are such a great band during their early incarnation they were untouchable .Geoff tate one of the great voices to grace any stage lucky enough to see them support dio great memories
Same show in Tokyo, Queen of the Reich, you will not regret it, I guarantee... 👍🏻
If memory serves, this was also their encore for that performance. Vocals remained strong!
You’re right. They’d played 1:40 prior to this.
This album came out when I was a Sophomore in high school. I had to buy the cassette 3 times because I'd wear it out from playing it so much.
I was in 8th grade, and I think i went through at least 3 cassettes also!
That's fucking awesome. I found this song when I was 19 in 2004 and it's been my favorite song since.
At least 3 for me too. Then a CD, and now I have it on my computer so it will never wear out.
One of the greatest Rock vocalist ever!!
My favorite song by Queensryche, Love his voice.
DID YOU HEAR THAT??? I LOVE IT!
My favorite Queensryche song ever :)
My first concert was Queensryche. Damn, Geoff was so amazing back in the way back.
Geoff and Queensryche is one of the best!
Hard to put into words how great this band was. From there first EP everyone knew they were miles ahead of the rest of the heavy metal bands at the time. Operation Mindcrime best concept metal album. So many great albums
It comes out so effortlessly that it's ridiculous. LEGEND!!!
Keep in mind, that song was typically an encore.
Queensryche is a criminally underrated band.
Love this one
Rewatched this... I feel so lucky to live in a reality with that particular performance. Its just so FUCKING perfect. Geoff and TV at lineup of Queensryche was very talented.
Here is why I love you guys. EVERYONE else pauses the song. You guys play it then talk.
I LOVED your faces at the first double octave skip...Geoff Tate is one of a kind...I saw them live in the early 80's....one of my first introductions to Metal...I was awestruck for realz...Great reaction!! 🤘🤘🎸🎸🤘🤘
Legends
And remember this song was the encore. They were amazing to see live. Love that 80's simons drum sound....
The encore of their second show of the day. Geoff was a fucking BEAST when he was younger.
When music was pure! No autotune, singers sang, guitarists played, musicians had real talent!
Looking forward to if/when you start digging into Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" album. "Revolution Calling" is very appropriate for the times.
sadly... still, the overall story of the album is a cautionary tale. The vast majority of revolutions in history have been giant disasters.
I know. I listen to “Revolution Calling” and think, “ This is going on now”
Yes, it is brother. Extremely appropriate.
@@bryanparker2925 the album was dedicated to the Bush administration whom was just taking over for Reagan. They were a left wing progressive band, Geoff Tate still is very political.
@@annahanguiano8931 yep. I’m just saying it’s like that with every political race. This one included
Damn! That takes me back to being 20 years old.......my college days!
Ya got me on this one! I’ve been listening to these guys since the late 80’s. Yep I’m showing my age! Don’t care. I’m 62 now and waking up to Queensryche while my husband is paying bills is the treat of all treats😂. ALWAYS MUSIC IN MY HOUSE FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS! And now both my son AND granddaughter r very accomplished musicians! We love heavy metal!
Those reactions to Geoff hitting those high notes are priceless.
Geoff🙏is Queensryche ‼️him voice, WOUAH 🎼Wonderful 💕I’m listening him older, and it’s only very nice🔥just « No Hairs »🤷♀️I’m Smile, your reaction... perfect🎶Bye Guys😂
You guys should check out their live version of I will Remember & Anybody Listening live on MTV. Geoff Tate has an amazing voice!!
Love seeing the young folks react like this. Shows this music spans the generations. Awesome react folks.
His singing was even more impressive when you take into account that this was an encore performance.
2:21 and 5:10 that's the whole world's reaction right there. 0.0 Love it!
did you hear that ,like a dear in head lights ,octave 5 can break glass!!!! one of the greatest singer of our time !!!!!
The most awesome part of this reaction is when the two of you simultaneously froze when Geoff went out of this world 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻
Geoff Tate is not human... I saw him perform live 5 years ago and he sounds just as good!
Queensryche is what happens when absolute perfection comes together.
I caught this tour at Lamour in Brooklyn. They were even wearing the same outfits.
Absolutely incredible.
Probably my favorite live preformance of all time Goeff is a BEAST!!!
Love Suzi's reaction to that last octave beyond anybody's imagination.
I saw them supporting DIO in ‘84 and they were outstanding!
Welcome to Queensryche! The entire Operation Mindcrime album is one you should listen to. It's a concept album but it is one of the greatest of all time. Check out I don't believe in love off of that album it stands on it's own and doesn't need the rest of the album to make sense!
Maybe a little...
MINDCRIME isn't A concept album, it's THE concept album
Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger
Back in the 1980's they were this amazing live - just like the albums, they were always amazing to see live weather in clubs or an arena show
Mind crime album considered by......instrumentalist’s and vocalist as a master piece. They could jam but they were precise and excellent musicians. Not to mention one of the best leads of all time
Yup, I heard that back in 1984. No autotune, just talent.
Geoff Tate is a legend. They were so far ahead of their time. The first real progressive metal band. Followed by Fates Warning (The Specter Within and Awaken the Guardian.)
Greatness. No other word for it.
Queensryche was doing that live before vocal processing!
Saw them in concert 1988 Michigan. One of the best concerts ever!
No shit…that is exactly the script. The best part is knowing the band and Geoff’s vocal abilities and waiting for that moment to come…then it’s “Whaaaaaaattt!?!?!?!” 😮
Formidable queensryche was lucky to see these guys in 84 supporting dio absolute great show
Eyes of a stranger....masterpiece!!!
Ah, this brings back the feels to me. I did a version of this for my high school talent show senior year. Took second due to us having a soprano soloist in our choir program that was fielding offers from the UMKC conservatory of jazz, Berklee in Boston, and Washington University in St. Louis and she killed it on a couple of Puccini arias. Our director had fulsome praise for me though, because I used the melody lines from this particular live version, complete with the ocrave+ jump at the end of the first verse. I hadn't developed full control of my vibrato in head voice yer and was simply running out of air to carry the last couple of rounds through the chorus for their proper duration.
In a lot of their songs, they do duel leads that are things of legend in rock.
Geoff Tate is the best Metal vocalist of all time. The Warning album is an absolute masterpiece.
I'd have to say Bruce Dickinson. But Geoff is definitely up there in greatness!
I'd take either of them, maybe slight edge to Geoff. To me, Operation: Mindcrime is the ultimate masterpiece. And I love all their music through at least Empire.
One of the Greatest Rock Anthems of all time. Period.
Geoff is one of the most unique, incredible singers you will ever hear. I was fortunate to see them live a few times when he was still with them. Awesome shows every time. So many awesome songs, Queen of the Reich was their first big hit, give it a try, I think you will like it.
Chris Degarmo wrote most of the songs. He is the lead guitar.
I have watched 3 videos of you guys.........you are fantastic 😁😝. The fact you preform but also respect other music is amazing. Love from the uk x
This is what us Grandpas' were rockin out to back in the day.
The best ever... No one compares then or now.
RycheCAMPAIGN83/84! One of the many flawless performances.
No auto tune folks. Loved the look on their faces when he belt out the scream. She’s like “ did you hear that” lol 😂 yeah Geoff Tate one of the best hard rock singers in the 80’s.
I've been following him since their EP just called Queensryche with the hit song called Queen of the Reich they've been nothing but incredible ever since
I was hooked when I first heard them on their EP. When this song first came out, and I heard that first E5, I was blown away that Geoff was still killing it. One of my top 3 favorite bands
In my opinion Operation Mindcrime is one of the best metal albums ever. Heard it like 25 years ago for the first time, still gives me the shivers today.
Fun fact: The singer, Geoff Tate, is now a member of Avatasia, with an unbelievable stage presence even today. Love the guy! l..l, ,l..l
The fact that he's a rare baritenor....ugh amzing
Bloody Hell. A classic.
I saw them twice in Houston and he sounded good then as he does in this video. Badass singer!
Saw them in 1984 in a bar in Pittsburgh PA. Unreal good.
Jeff Tate and Queensrÿche was fenomenal during this tour back in 1984. I saw them supporting DIO in Sweden 1984 and they were amazing.
I live in Bremerton Washington and I remember seeing them in 1982 playing at a skating arena.
Thank you both for the reaction! Sublime song.
I was jamming them when I was way younger then y'all but I play them every day glad to see your gen getting into them.🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
just wow! Queensryche with Geoff Tate; his voice is great. I saw them live several times, last at the Wacken Open Air 2019. I love the album "Operation: Mindcrime"
To most singers in the eighties Jeff was an absolute God ... in his prime he was a machine the entire band was.
I've been listening to them since the day they arrived in the 80s absolutely one of the best voices of all time
This was so easy to take for granted when it was new but all these years later, it's so amazing because it isn't common anymore. Such an amazing vocal talent.
+ 1 Operation mindcrime
First really good story album....i was just captured by it when it came out.....
Suite sister Mary.....
Geoff Tate is STILL touring and recording under his name. He can hit those E5 notes tuned down. He was 25 in 1984 and is now 63. Rock on
Geoff Tate had the greast voice. Four octave ranged and well-trained. Those notes he hits are incredible.
gives me the chills every time
I've been waiting for you guys to do this one, and BOOM !!
Saw Queensryche back in 84 in the UK as opening act for Dio. I've been a massive fan ever since. 👏
“Did you hear that ?” Lol. Yes. Yes I did. 1992 in Baltimore to a packed house
Also, if you watch that whole concert, that was the last song of the set and then Queen of the Reich as the encor. Tons of power and control.
Nothin but respect for playin through it all my guys . Thanks and that was great
