I taped for many years. I also could not get the cutter blade sharp enough to cut easily. What I did on my banjo was I riveted a piece of hacksaw blade to the front of my banjo cutter blade. Easy cuts for years.

The tape buddy is my speed. I'm not a pro but I'm always looking to get better. That's why I appreciate your channel.
I like the tape buddy but I use it differently than you showed. I get a bucket and just pull out a bunch of tape into the bucket. I then go to the wall with the bucket and start slapping the tape on the wall. Then I go back and inbed the tape with my knife. Works for me. Thanks for the video.
Currently using the tape buddy finishing a large game room and I find it to be a nice alternative to a banjo. Once you get some practice with it you can get good consistent taping, embedded properly without any guessing. But as reviewed above; you need to makes sure that the mud is thinned out, keep the tape level as you pull it out and develop a consistent pull then cut technique. I think I will use my partner next to enable much longer taping draws....
The banjo in the right hands can be a dangerous tool! If you cant afford a bazooka they are priceless. That new tool I have tried and I used to think the banjo was a messy tool but the tape buddy made it look clean, I was covered from head to toe while trying to use it! Might be great for tiny projects but cant compare to a banjo for production purposes. You should review that new banjo type tool I think it's called the mud pro. It has a cutter and corner wheel as well.

Thanks for the tips Guy. I went ahead and picked up one of these tools to test on small jobs. I initially thought the tool was a bit queer, but after watching your demo, I decided to give it a try.
I did my whole basement remodel with it. Me and the wife’s loved it.
that tool is what we called a texas mudsllinger and have been around forever, used mostly for fire taping, they were galvanized tin. I was a 47 yr. bazooka man who hated playing the banjo
Thanks that’s what I need for diy weekend warrior and I need to tape like 100 sheets but not at once.
I've found the Tape Buddy to be an effective tool. For taping a room it's great... for a house it would be slower than a banjo or bazooka but faster than a pan and knife. I had a helper one time and we were able to pull out 11-12' lengths and apply them to the joints together. That was long enough for the joints in that room... a win!
Faster than a pan and six inch knife? Not for a Pro

Hand tools. I've worked behind too many guys on banjos and the such. They almost never do the prep work, the mud is thin and they don't fill the recess. Run right over blow outs, popped screws, crushed seams, and delamination. I've never seen anyone do a really nice job with them. And unless you are tag teaming it, it's really not faster than a pan and joint knife. I'm fast on a joint knife, and everything is up close and personal, everything gets fixed
I love my tape buddy because I never learned how to use the banjo but now I just learned how to use the banjo and how to load it properly thanks to you so gonna try it again tomorrow and see if I can learn it but if not I will be back to my tape buddy cause I am loving the way it works yes it takes longer but it makes nice smooth taping for me thanks man your videos rock

I tried the "tape buddy". As you said, it does a good job for small projects. I've been using a banjo for several years and yes, it is a workout but it gets the job done. I'd love to have the bazooka but I just can't justify the expense of that entire system. If I did just drywall work, I would probably invest in the bazooka equipment. Whatever the case, thank you for the review of these and all the other pointers you have given.
Try looking at the Mud Pro its alot like a banjo except it has a cutting blade and corner wheel. Cost way more than banjo but half of bazooka and you dont need a pump.
Adding a 2nd comment, as something came to mind and I didn’t want it lost. The one job that comes to mind where I’d pick one of these up is, Fire Taping. Probably isn’t done much at this point (replaced with foam) but this was often a patch work of tape out of view.
Fire taping would be best for that thing! Yep I'd use it for some areas. Still, I am all for Goldblatt banjos. I've used them since 1978. That's 44 years of "Wide Open 100 mph!"
I never knew the banjo or any other tool would put a nice coat of mud on the tape. Thanks for the knowledge. Also I agree the one tool over the banjo.
During your great presentation I found myself looking at the way the sheets of sheet rock were placed on the walls. Perhaps you could make a video on how to place the sheets. Does one work from the ceiling and then down towards the floor or vise versa. Also the staggering of the joints.

Not for me, kilt. Banjo or tape reel is what I'll use. It's faster
The green mudding tool is good for DIY homeowners, as a construction worker Banjo is my favorite, Bazooka is amazing and the mud Boxes for taping but the price on them doesn't work for me. Banjo again may work for intermediate to high skill professionals and are very affordable solution for fast taping.
Just have the chance the use a the banjo on a 30 board job mainly ceilings.... It definitely speeds the job up alot, but it's a production tool, so everything has to be just right because your already sacrificing quality for
So guy brought 1 to bigger tape job, works OK but even he kept using my banjo after the first few hours. Once the banjo starts playing fly through a room.
Stopped using paper tape for fibrafuse, tears where you need it easy looks great, and can second coat in the same hour.
Thanks for the review! I'm a banjo guy for anything between 20-60 boards anything under 20 I use a mesh gun with hot mud loving the mesh gun you should do a review on that? I'm rocking the hot mud.

None of these gadgets compare to a bazooka, but for small do it yourself jobs a banjo will get the job done.
I've been doing this method with a five gallon bucket for decades.
Tape Buddy looks like a better way and I'm getting one.
One thing I always keep handy is a half-full five gallon bucket of water to wash my hands in.
the Tape Buddy needs a cutting head like my Goldblatt banjo has! yep, Tape Buddy would be good for punch out work or homeowners. But for professionals, we favor Goldblatt banjos and Ames automated taping tools. I use both. I might buy this Buddy tool to use for training newbies I'd have taping light boxes and pipes.😎 (I've been finishing since 1978.... tried every tool known to mankind. one things for sure, I'll try any new tool just in case it saves time, is fast, and makes me money!)
I just purchased a banjo after already having and using the tape buddy. I thought I was going to love the banjo, but unfortunately I hated it and only used it for about 3 minutes. I may have had too much mud but I had a difficult time slapping the tape to the ceiling and the tape kept falling off. I cleaned it out and used the tape buddy to finish 😂
I did mention that I have a love-hate relationship with the banjo myself. I can make it work because I’m a pro but I still I’m not fond of it. Tape buddy is much easier for novices.
The Tape Buddy you need is one wiping down behind you.
I have to chuckle at this (new) product,my dad was using this in the 60’s I started with it in the 70’s,ours were made of wood,the fastest technique is to pull like 8’ of tape loop that halfway hook it on your pinky don’t tear off,pull 8’ again loop it halfway hook it on your ring finger,continue this until you end up last loop pinched between last finger and thumb,we would have 50’ or more in one pull,fastest with one man putting up tape and one man wiping behind him,when I was younger I could compete with a bazooka,never thought about patenting that wood box duh on my part,did my dad have the original,I don’t know but it’s kool to see.
We call them slop boxes. Mine is made out of stainless steel. From the late '70s. And agree out can pull alot out
@@bobc3451 I remember my dad calling them slip boxes,I think reason was it was shaped like a pig feeder design with the sides angling out sort of a v with a flat bottom, ours were sturdy you could mix a whole bucket of mud fill your box, lay your bucket on its side on top of the box and keep it full of mud til the 5 gallon bucket was empty,also if you ran out of tape,you could leave the last couple of feet of tape in box,put on new roll of tape slide new tape under the tape you left,and the weight of the mud would pull the new roll to the front,ready to pull another 500’ if you didn’t do this you had to empty mud from box then pull tape through then put mud back in,I know that’s a long description but I’m sitting at the hospital with my mother bored crazy.
Not slip but slop,also if you had any trash in your mud you had to get it out or you’d have little streaks on your tape with no mud,hated that!
I pull out a half of a roll into a bucket and use it as long as I want

I tried your type of banjo back in early 80s...i ended up bouncing it across the garage floor. I always used the Goldblatt banjo. Kinda rounded and shorter. Perfect in closets too. When I first started, I wiped down behind two seasoned drywallers! On stilts or on the floor, I wiped down all angles corners flats, plus kept their water buckets and taping mud buckets near to them. But after I became a seasoned finisher (about 3 years!) I was out-taping everyone! Goldblatt banjos! The best! Tampa Bay region was our turf late 70s 80s!
could you draw out a load into a small bucket then walk around the room slapping it on? That way you don't have to piece and join as much. I was thinking a tape buddy containers worth, then refill and do another round?

Hey "That Kilted Guy" nice video you look like you have some skills!! I'm a 23 year pro, I've seen that thing around for a while now and with your video I know not to even waste my money!! Anyone with the slightest ability can run a banjo!! I always opt for a serrated blade on my banjos and have seen coworkers even rivet a pice of hacksaw blade on their banjo's which is far superior to a sharpened blade. I would be a lot happier if I saw your hawk and trowel. The pancake flipper style knife has no place in drywall finishing for the pros. I'd be willing to bet your work turns out great though!! Great video!!
Knives work just fine. Skill is more important than the tools

Been using the banjo for some 35 years, never cared much for the bazooka, can't stand the slope box, that being said, the only banjos I've used that works, the Colorado taping banjo, and the Kraft banjo.......
Fiba fuse tape is all I use anymore you never get blisters. Wonder if it will run through the tape buddy.

You compare a banjo to the Columbia's super taper? Failing that Do you just have a recommendation on the Columbia super taper versus one of the nicer banjos?

Do u think drywall finishing can be taught, or is it a natural skill?
I think that it can be taught to anyone, but only a few will excel much like any skill.
there are two types of plastic. Plastic that is broken and plastic that is going to break.
And metal dents, rusts and bends so nothing is perfect
IMO, if you have 0 skill it will get the job done on a small job. On the other hand with a bit of skill it will be faster to get some mud on the joint and lay on the tape. :)
You can't beat the speed of a banjo honestly especially, but hand taping can definitely give more consistent quality results. But if the banjo mud is the right consistency with easy access to more mud and the banjo has been broken in and you are fit to run it, its a game changer.
Basically a super taper.

I don't mind the titty-high mudding/taping but if that thing keeps me from having to apply mud on inside corners - especially the wall/ceiling inside corners - then I'm all for it! I’ve learned to not dress the way society thinks I should dress, I dress for comfort or in the style that appeals to me because I really don’t care what other people think about how I live my own life. I’m only barefoot in situations where it’s totally safe Since I often work on customers finished homes so it would be no different than being barefoot at home.

It’s also good for builders and contractors who only do like minor remodeling, etc. Not just ladies. Besides that, I know a number of ladies that could probably run circles around many drywallers lol. so no need to be making misogynist statements in here.
