Anyone trying to dismiss or erase Jimi Hendrix is clearly not legitimate and clearly do not understand anything about music. What Hendrix did in music was revolutionary still influencing today.

Thank you for doing this with such passion! I am 70 years old. I was 11 when Jimi came on the scene, and because I have a musician older brother who showed me immediately, I have been not only a fan, but an aficionado of Jimi my entire life. I was 15 when he died, and we all got in trouble for wearing black arm bands at school on Monday, the 20th of September 1970 in showing our collective loss. Now, I have seen others present UA-cam lessons on Jimi's "Villanova Junction" but none of them has delved into the "voodoo spirit" of that amazing improv performance at Woodstock. From the first time I heard it, I have always heard a classical symphony, as if that was what was in Jimi's head at the time. That performance is a masterpiece on the unbridled genius level of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. For me, the outstanding pieces from Jimi are "One Rainy Wish", "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)", "Pali Gap", "Drifting", and "Midnight" which I named my band after (note my avatar here). Midnight was a song, much like Jeff Beck's "Beck's Bolero", which was eons ahead of its time. Obviously, "Midnight" is a retooling of "Foxy Lady" but taken to another dimension entirely! The production values in that song were so completely ahead of its time!!! Just mindblowing!!! Another thing that should be delved into is the fact that Jimi, had he lived, was going to evolve into a jazz musician, much like Jeff Beck. We need look no further than the Electric Ladyland album for this proof (I agree with you 1 million % on "Come On" as it has always been one of my bucket list songs). Working with the guys from Traffic (another Jazz rock band beyond compartmentalization - "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys"), Jimi revealed his forward path which jelled in the "Gypsys, Suns, and Rainbows" ensemble assembled at Woodstock, which was a lot like the Santana band at the time. A lot of the so-called "Psychedelic Rock" back then was really jazz before it could be understood as such. It was simply 'misgendered' out of innocent ignorance. As much as I was blown away by R U Exp, it was "Axis: Bold As Love" that resonated in my heart and soul. The songs I mentioned above are a direct furtherance from Axis. I always wanted to play like Jimi until everyone else began to, and then I lost that because for me, I didnlt want to play as his hands did, but as his spirit did, which I have always referred to as his "Voodoo Spirit". I don't want to just play guitar, I want to play music. I don't want to be a technician. I want to be an artist (which I am - no brag, just fact). I want to paint with light and sculpt with sound. And that's what I learned from Jimi (and a good bit of 'clear light' and 'yellow sunshine' - if you catch my drift - the early 70s were a perfectly 'trippy' time to be into music as a lifeblood). Dark Side of the Moon, Houses of the Holy, James Gang with Tommy Bolin (who was buried wearing Jimi's big black ring). Tommy Bolin is the most underrated guitar genius in the world!!! He inspired Jeff Beck. Look on Tommy's album notes where he wrote: "Thank Jimi, Thank God". They are all like a solar system of titan planets orbiting one-another closely. Classical masters reincarnated in the world of electricity. Lightning bolts! Anyway, please do more of this, and do Tommy Bolin a solid. The entire "Teaser" album is a masterpiece. "Mystery" and "Alexis" from "Bang", "Getting Tighter" and "Ode to G" from "Come Taste the Band" (I think you might have already touched on these last two). But deeper dives. Deeper dives into Jimi's sweeter, softer side. The genius masterpieces that most people have zero knowledge of. More Robin Trower (who relieved our pain of loss with his musical homages to Jimi). And all those people who others say are better than hendrix, just ask them what they think. See Steve Vai performing "Midnight" with Randy Hansen. I have been lucky to meet a number of these people (on your lists), and I can tell you, they all worship Jimi! Carlos, Randy, Robin, SRV, they worshiped Jimi!!! But ask them all, including Jimi, who was the absolute best, and they will all say, Jeff Beck. The story goes that Jimi asked Chas Chandler to introduce him to Clapton, but that is urban legend. Both Jimi and Randy California wanted to meet Jeff Beck. It is a crime against humanity that none of the jam session between Jimi and Jeff were ever recorded for posterity, being that they both always went to each other's shows when they were in the same town at the same time, and always jammed together whenever they had the chance. Oh, what might have been!!!! Imagine Jimi with a Jeff Beck strat, or any of today's pedal boards and amps (he had such shitty equipment, relatively speaking) . . . Imagine the strat the custom shop would have made for Jimi. I always do!!! Again, thanks for doing this. Please do much, MUCH MORE!!!

Exactly. It's a guitar conversation, not a guitar battle. And when you approach your record or CD collection, sometimes you want to pop in metal, sometimes punk, or R &B. Nothing's better than the other.

I’ve been listening to Hendrix since the early 90s when I discovered him through my dad’s record collection. Every time I come back to his music I’m still amazed by his playing, the feel and nuance. There’s so much in just a few bars of his playing.

Amazing video & very needed right now. I started playing as a teenager in 1987, in the middle of the Shrapnel shredder era & at the time, the blues-based players sounded slow & boring to me. Boy, was I ever WRONG, LOL! 🤪Hendrix’s skills, knowledge & artistry were world-class. And that’s before you consider he was playing RHYTM & LEAD guitar WHILE SINGING! Just Unreal! 🤯

Beautiful! Great choices for songs. One Rainy Wish is a real gem too. I don't think there is anything to worry about with Jimi's legacy, for every one who doesn't "get" Hendrix, there is one or two that do. Hendrix was, is and will always be recognized as a special talent and a unique musical force.

I'm glad you mentioned the feel his playing has. Definitely a big part of his sound and style. I agree 💯 with you I love players that are known for their lead work but their rhythm playing gets overlooked. Him and Sir Edward both. I've been on blues kick lately, and Americana style music I think this lesson is going to make me do another look and listen to Jimi. His ability to comp chords was amazing. His chord vocab was amazing. Take care man. I think for the style of music I really like to play and create, Eddie and Jimi are at the top of the list

People who criticize Jimi, maybe don't know how somewhat simplistic most the music of the day was. When he came on the scene with his fist album, we did not know initially what those sounds were. Ahead of his time for many decades after.(fuzz, vibrato, motorcycle sounds, ufo sounds) it was very new for 1967

My mother, rest her soul was a musician and guitarist. She passed in 1983, when I was 3 of cancer (#FKCANCER) She is the reason I picked up the guitar. JIMI is the reason I still play it. I heard Red House, and seen footage or heard a recording of the star spangled banner around the same time, 8-9 y/o, and have been obsessed with Hendrix ever since.. I’ll probably be one of the jerks that comment twice. But at 2:29 I wanted to open because all of those other great musicians you’ve shared . Roger Mcguinn!? Leslie West!! Powerhouses! I just wanted to really say how awesome it is that you’re givin them love too. Guys like them get forgotten about. And I’ve been seeing this dismissive language, And even actual videos made questioning jimi’s legitimacy and talent I don’t wanna name a big tuber here but it’s unbelievable. So thank you for helping keep the spirit alive man. Love your stuff!

Aloha I had the pleasure of knowing Jimi, and meet him 😊in 1968, in San Francisco . All I can say as a musician and guitar player, I had the utmost respect for his music . Jimi, literally without malice, blew everyone away, with his style of playing. It’s really in the soul, and I’m 74 years old now and moved back to Hawaii in 1979 with my kids. I will always cherish the fact that I was blessed to meet the brother. God bless and merry Christmas 🎁🎄 great channel I watch it often.

I think the fact the fender Strat is still the most widely purchased guitar in 2024 says a lot. I think people forget that the era before Hendrix was like the US industrial output before world war 2. You could maybe see what was the Potential could be…but once it happened and you looked back you could say, wow….that was one hell of a change.

Great rant. I think some of the "backlash" on Hendrix is how his legacy is being managed/monetized, but that should have no affect or diminish how Hendrix re-wrote what rock guitar could be. The fact that when he debuted in the UK, nearly every legendary British blues rock legend was gob-smacked by how talented Hendrix was. Another "modern" player who definitely channels Hendrix is John Fruscante of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Such a distinct and interesting guitar player . Jimi will ALWAYS be an icon of the electric guitar. When I think about Are You Experienced coming out in 1967 it doesn't seem possible. Even The Beatles were copping his licks and ideas, hell Brian Epstein wanted to manage him. Not to mention when the great players of that era are asked who is the best they nearly all say Hendrix.

It's a Behringer. I don't know the model. The sound is more in the fingers than most people would assume, though.
The best thing I've done for my tone is play without any amp. That makes me work harder at getting a good sound, witch leads to being able to lay back a lot more when playing through an amp, greatly increasing dynamic range.

I started playing guitar in the mid 70s. While there was always a lot of boisterous talk going on about Hendrix, but when you look at the music scene of the 70s so little of it was influenced by Hendrix or Clapton. Looking back now I think Pete Townsend was the most influential guitarist from the 60s. The 70s was all about Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. There will always be players who worship Hendrix, but I honestly dont see him as big as some much more deserving players of the time.

    Are you experienced?
Are you a guitar player or Are you a musician? Competition? No one could compete with Jimi back in the day, he raised the bar and imagination what could be done with the guitar.
Jimi was a musician, writer, composer but most of all he was a messenger. Not of this earth sent far from across the universe.

The dismissing of Hendrix may be due to present-day bias. Younger people want to believe that the best music is happening in more recent times. Of course, guitar players of the last ten or twenty have developed a personal and recognizable style that influences newer players. John Frusciante of RHCP comes to mind. However, I still see Louis Armstrong and Lonnie Johnson as standard bearers of great soloing artist. Thanks for playing more Hendrix and making me want to go back again and listen to Electric Ladyland.

Jimi Hendrix is one of the most significant human beings who ever walked planet Earth and to me he is godlike (for real not the imagined kind like most other gods) his spirituality is in every note - listen to Machine Gun on Band of Gypsies for proof. Long live Jimi Hendrix he is immortal
