      I liked how you had side video and paused on downswing to explain bent elbow! That really helped us visualize. Would be great showing that from behind too. When you explained why you look at foul it makes since, what doesn't is are you really looking straight at the boards there on foul line or maybe a couple feet in front of foul line? Hard to imagine how you change marks when your angles are more exaggerated because your looking straight down at release.

    • @hihbowling
      @hihbowling  4 роки тому

      @@Alldayertexas It's all imaginary angles. I stare at the boards at the line, thr grain itself, black line separating them, and in the right gutter when if I'm standing like 10-15 (Rare). If I'm told to hit a certain spot I could no problem.

    I'm active duty and currently trying to get back into bowling competitively. Growing up, I remember getting criticism from other kids from youth leagues because of my rev rate. Man I love this... an aggressive release used to be met with criticism and someone trying to change your game.
    Keep hitting it harder man, bowling needs this side of the game to balance out all of the other sides. There is never just one right answer or one way to do it.

    Excellent video! I've been watching your stuff for years, so I don't know how I missed this one. Two big takeaways:
    3:50 - I've been bowling leagues and tournaments since 1981. From 2015 and before, my layout had my ring finger too far forward. I took three years off. I came back in the fall of 2018 with new equipment and a new PSO who moved my ring finger about 1/4" back. I picked up about 30-40 RPM with just that move.
    8:00 - I never understood the yo-yo confusion before, but you explained why it's so confusing perfectly.

    Been bowling 18 years and up until now NO ONE told me anything about the finger order and which one is the vocal point. I've asked so many people and watched a ton of vids.
    The arm bend was an instant rev increaser for me but I did torch my wrist in the process. Gonna have to tweak it a bit more to relieve some of that stress but was pretty happy with the results. Our house shot has some rough backends after a while, so having those extra revs really got it to finish at the backend which was what I was looking for. I have 2 balls currently and there have been times where both just were not getting back no matter how straight I played it. This has definitely helped with that. Better than buying a new ball which was what I was gonna do.

    4:40 pay attention to this everyone. This is 1000% true. I noticed this long ago when I tried to aim at arrows. I now aim at dots before the arrows. Rev rate way higher.

    • @die7fox
      @die7fox 4 роки тому +1

      This improved my rev rate and also tamped down my tendency to loft the ball at the arrows.

    • @TraumaER
      @TraumaER 4 роки тому +2

      @@die7fox exactly. Your eyes play a big part of what happens to the ball. In theory, you could aim at your feet and your rev rate would be even higher, but then your accuracy would suffer. My take is that I aim at the dots before the arrows (less than 10 feet out), but I can hit that same board pretty accurately vs. arrows or even the range finder 30-40 ft down the lane. But yeah when I tried the arrows, my ball speed skyrocketed and I started missing boards a lot and even started hitting the right gutters. Now I average 211 with 400+ rpm and 17.5 mph (strike ball), 20 mph (spares).

    • @Litjlien
      @Litjlien 4 роки тому +2

      I asked my bowling coach about this particular part of the video, where your eyes are at, compared to rev rate... He told me that this is partly true, because the shorter your eyes are on the lane (dots, foul line etc), the lower speed your ball gets, therefore more rev rate). Have you compared your ball speed while having your eyes on the foul line, compared to having your eyes on the arrows, or even further down the lane?

    • @Litjlien

    So for me 2 things stand out : 1 the yo-yo wrist. I never thought anyone can yo-yo a bowling ball especially at the speed of the ball at release. Your description of the reverse yo-yo makes more sense. 2 the targeting , when you say you look at the foul line are you picking the end of a board ( let’s say the 30 board ) to hit the 15-18 board at the arrows ? I was just learning and had very little rev, didn't really know how to get it off my hand properly, then I watched your "bowler breakdown" video. In the video, you said about the release, "I don't know how to explain it; it just works." Watching that video, it finally made sense.
    You asked me for an update, so here it is:
    In trying to emulate your release (or as closely as my 5'4 height with a 4" span can using a 15lb ball), I couldn't. But, for the first time, I realized that it wasn't because I wasn't strong enough, but because I had the wrong thumb pitch. Corrected that issue and continued to work on it, and in short order, found myself far into the rev dominant side of the spectrum. Went from everyone telling me to move right to hearing "move 10 boards left!" Thumb release is seamless, and now I'm working on getting it off of my fingers a bit smoother because I'm hitting it harder than I have the speed to match. 250-300rpm at 12.5-13mph at the deck (for the record, I was 15-16mph before all this rev slowed it down). I'm working on building speed too, but I'm small, and I have lupus and RA and issues with my right hip, so that part is slow going. I've been bowling less than a year and a half. I'll get there.
    People make all sorts of astounded comments watching me bowl. To anyone reading this, whatever Jason says, it works. I'm a little scared to watch this video 🤣, as I already have to resort to plastic at times, but I'm going to watch it anyway, as I love your videos. Thanks again, Jason!

      @@hihbowling Please! No more rev! 🤣
      It's a great video. You mention some things that I haven't seen touched on before. I already target at the foul line, always have, except right side spares, then I use the pins. I actually started to bend my elbow less to get it off a bit cleaner. I'm also auditioning different kinds of finger inserts because I sure don't need the tacky ones anymore lol. I see you don't use them, but with the swelling from lupus and ra, vacu grips are a necessity, otherwise my fingers will actually get stuck in the ball by the end of the night. I think that getting it off of my fingers cleaner is the key though. Now, increasing my speed increases my rev as well, resulting in the same overreaction. I'm great on fresh oil. Just bowled on Autobahn with a polished tropical surge lol. But on breakdown/second shift, I need the release to be a bit cleaner.
      The ring finger thing is interesting. I actually sized up in my ring because it would get sticky at the end of the night and cause accidental backup balls when trying to come more up the back. Before I got vacu grips and sized up, I used to take my ring finger out altogether, throwing with just my thumb and middle, come the end of the night when I needed less reaction. Also, I can pull harder with my ring to get more forward roll, or harder with my middle to get more rotation angle. Seems like I'm the opposite. I've never tried throwing with just my ring, but trust that I'm going to give it a shot to see what happens lol. Thanks again!

    Well done. I went from being a Cranker in the late 80's to becoming a power stroker/tweener after having major carpal tunnel issues from bowling. i was always looking for max revs, but had some bad advise regarding span, caused the wrist issues. I went 2 inches reverse with 1 inch lateral, driller didnt shorten the span and boom went my wrist. I had to quit and heal over 3 years. When I returned I tamed it down and learned to be more of a stroker. With that said, I have never looked at the relationship of the ring finger. I have a much better driller now and bowl with out pain. I still would like to get some revs back and your video gives me some tools to try with out fear of hurting myself. Jason great video. You mention here that you look at the foul line 100%. I'm right handed and stand on the 15 board aiming at the 8 board. I can see using the foul line as my focus because I throw straight up the lane. I now have a new ball, Roto-Grip MVP pearl. I was told I have to get the ball out down the lane to allow it to utilize it's back end potential. I now aim at the 6 pin all the way down the lane. I want to be more consistent. How do I focus on the foul line and still get the ball angling out? I see how successful you are at it, I thought I'd ask you for your advise.

I can sometimes put a bit of pressure on my index finger to keep my wrist from breaking but it needs work. i 100% believe you about what you said about the difference between 1 handed and 2 handed release.. i am a two hander (because with 1 hand i get about 250rpms xD)
    but i still cant get much more than 450 rpms with two hands.. its maybe easier to get some revs with 2 hands instead of 1 but with the proper training and strength you can get more with 1 hand.
    i wish i had your 600 revs with two hands.. but i think with my 16,7 mph speed my ball would be much to slow.. :D
    And to look at the foul line and the dots helped me a lot to get my ball lower at release.. when i was looking at the arrows i was always kinda throwing the ball to far on the lane. ;)
    So great Video!! Always a pleasure to watch you hit it hard.. :D

  • @bowl1820

    First the "Sarge Easter grip" is a fairly uncommon grip, Mainly it's used to alleviate pain in the ring finger. One of the most well known Pro's that used is Mike Fagan, He went to it do to injuring his ring finger and because of years of abuse to his hand.
    One of the common misconceptions about the Sarge Easter grip is that it lowers revs (and yes some bowler's try this grip to try and lower their revs.), But in reality it only lowers your rev rate initially when you first start using it. Once you get use to the grip your rev rate will go right back where it was and has nothing to do with "Hitting" on the ball this has been well known for years.
    As for the drill it's called the "Foul Line drill" or "Release drill" and is a excellent well known drill. It teaches good balance and finish and hand position. Search for Joe Slowinski's foul line drill for more information. (Note: It doesn't involve grabbing or hitting the ball.)
    As for the terms "Hit", "Hitting" In the video he doesn't appear to be doing what is considered or defined as "Hitting", "Hitting Up" or "Lifting" the ball. So IMO it's not being used properly here and giving a wrong impression.
    "Hitting" (aka: Lifting- Which is slightly lofting the ball and hitting the ball on the up stroke at the release. Basically a late release.) on a ball that was from back during the rubber and plastic ball era (and early urethane) when they were having to make the balls hook.
    Lift fell out of favor when resin balls appeared, because it would create erratic reaction or hook too early with the ball going through the nose or blowing corner pins. Resin balls didn't need the extra "help" from putting Hit/lift on the ball to make them hook.
    "Grabbing" is basically "Hitting up" a little extra hard with lift on the ball at the bottom of the swing, It's a form of muscling the ball (There is also grabbing at the top of the backswing which is just as bad.).
    While targeting at the foul line might compensate for the grabbing a little, Most peoples accuracy will suffer. A small miss at the foul line is amplified greatly down the lane. A small miss targeting the arrows won't be as bad, Targeting the breakpoint your accuracy at the arrows will look fantastic.
    Targeting down the lane doesn't automatically make you rev rate suffer, A poor release is what does that. Look at the Pro's they are not targeting the foul line and they have plenty of rev's.

    • @hihbowling
      @hihbowling  4 роки тому

      Sarge Easter your ring finger will have a semi or conventional grip. That will for sure decrease rev rate. When I used inserts up until 2 years ago I jammed my fingers in the ball causing me to pretty much be a semi finger tip grip. Ive always done that. Once I went to no grips and actually used fingertip correctly my rev rate went up.
      This vid was above increasing rev rate, not overall hook. While I know exactly what you're saying about lift, grabbing, hitting, the terminology has changed over the years amd was simply expressing it how many would understand.
      As far as the targeting goes I dont know where everyone looks but Wes Malott moves his target while he walking to go from break point to foul line. Liz Johnson (greatest female ever) looks at the foul line.....

    • @bowl1820
      @bowl1820 4 роки тому

      hihbowling A true Sarge Easter grip uses a conventional full finger grip for the ring finger. You cant base how the sarge easter affects revs on the fact that you used a fingertip grip incorrectly and that your revs went up when you used a fingertip it correctly. The span would been too long for a semi and if you shoved your fingers through a set of properly sized inserts, they would have been too tight for you to cleanly release the ball and of course you had low revs.
      I understand this video was about revs, lift back in the day was about increasing revs (to increase overall hook). Yes terminology has changed, thats why you have to be careful about applying old terms to newer methods. Lift, hit, grab are terms relate to things your not supposed to do and using them in the wrong manner can cause problems if a bowler seeks more advanced coaching.
      As for targeting a lot is personal preference and what works for you, But most bowlers are not Malot or Johnson and most pros dont target the foul line.
      Thanks for posting the video.

    One of the biggest tips people miss out is really using that ring finger to hit it harder. I guess considering the pinky tuck allows faster hands they'd think the ring finger matters less than the middle finger, but that's simply not true

OK question at the release point you also mentioned the ring finger opposed to the middle finger, again never heard of that either. Exactly what do I concentrate on at the release point the of the wrist and ring finger as I have never done anything like that before. I was a classic power stroker in the mold of Jonny P. The technique of clearing the thumb properly is maybe the most valuable skill in bowling & the one's that can master this skill, become bowling God's to everyone of us that just can't get that kind of speed & proper rotation, props to you sir for sharing🤙
