Gas fireplace repair - WON'T Work, Start or Light - piezo ignitor spark igniter

As always shut off the gas before you do any repairs and if you smell gas, let it clear first. If you can not see a spark when pushing the ignitor, first clean the metal surfaces of the thermopile, thermocouple, igniter, and pilot. A light sanding with sandpaper, wire brush, or steel wool works great to remove the soot. If your piezo ignitor (also spelled 'Igniter') is broken they are a cheap and easy replacement so don't worry too much about it. I think Home Depot and Lowe's sell them. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Let me know how your repair goes!

    3 questions:
    1. What’s the hi-low knob to the left of the pilot knob?
    2. What’s the flow knob on the far far left for and how should it be set?
    3. Why are there 2 wall switches for the fireplace? It seems like 1 of them doesn’t do anything.

The superior dt or dr 500,600&800 are one of my favorite fireplaces to work on. Please refer to your owners manual for log placement and ember placement on these models. It’s a much better experience if you don’t plug any of the ports and place embers on all of the solid surface of the burner pan in dime size pieces. For an extra effect, you can place platinum embers, half in the flame and half on the Rockwool for a bright white to blue to orange-ish flame

Great video and helped us get our fireplace started for the first time since moving in, however, after a short bit the fire went out. While we were able to relight the pilot, the fire place would not relight. We heard about a reset button located on the right side of the furnace which needed to be pushed to make the system work. We were told that it is red, but have been unable to locate it. Do you have any videos that show the placement for a Lennox MPB3530 gas fireplace?

  • @logmeindangit

Thank you for the well-done video, Adam. I've had my Lopi freestanding gas fireplace for 14 years, and about 5-7 years ago the igniter started "misfiring" - I get no spark when pushing and hearing the loud snap-click. Sometimes it does it on the third to fifth click, sometimes never, ten or twenty clicks... So I open up the fireplace and light the pilot manually.
I will take the spark igniter button off and test it on my hand to see if it shocks me. That's a far more reliable test than trying to catch the spark with a hand-held Volt-Ohm-Meter. Literally "first-hand" information! (:::Laughing::: "Don't tase me, bro!")
Disclaimer: I am mechanically inclined and know wiring, too, so know how to do things like this without blowing myself up. Don't think that since I can, and it was fine, that you can, and it will be fine. "Darwin Awards" are always ready to be handed out to people who manage to get themselves killed doing something stupid. Don't do something stupid. Hire Adam.

Lyle Coe mine has a three position knob. Off, Pilot, and Run. You only get a small flame in the pilot position. After it warms up you Press and turn the knob to Run and get a full flame. Pilot is the mode for standby and lighting it. Of course my model has a pilot light, yours may or may not. Try pressing the knob and see if it turns a bit more.

I have a very old gas fire (1983) which has a piezo igniter but no thermo-couple device. It sparks fine but will rarely light. I have changed the peizo but its the same. I have cleaned and altered the spark gap and it will sometimes work a few times (days) but then it gets difficult again. I light it with a sperate gas lighter and it catches well every time. I am at a loss with this and my mind whirls as I wonder if this spark is made weak by a HT leakage? However it looks OK if the white colour is OK for the spark? When it is lit I can see the gas all around the spark discharge points. It makes no sense to me at all. I find myself wondering if this is a critical gas/air mixture that's not quite right? If so why would that be? It reminds me of an old Ford car... that's a very bad starter!
Any help with this would be most welcome. It makes no sense to me. Rgds BerryG

My thermo pile and coupler didn't have a lot of buildup on them, simply cleaning them didn't work. I did notice that the flame was not reaching all the way to the pile. The flame was weak and I could even see that some of the pilot flame was leaking out, having a small flame under the bracket that holds the pilot. My guess was that the pilot hole was partially plugged up. I took the whole pilot assembly out. That means unscrewing where the gas and couple lines are attached to the electrical connections box. Once out I could really clean the pilot holes. In my case it was the inside of the pilot that was full of crud. I used water from the sink, a pin to poke up in there, and a toothbrush.
It took some time, but this is not hard work.
When reassembled the pilot was strong and the flames encircled the pile and coupler with a good blue flame. The wall switch turned on the main burners and all was well. In my home, the gas fireplace keeps the whole up living space pretty warm and the furnace rarely comes on. And this is in 0 degree weather during this freeze we are having.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! VERY HELPFUL!

Hi Adam, thank you! Awesome video. Question: we switched out our light switch (to one including a dimmer for the lighting in the living room) and now our gas fireplace won't start. We can manually get a pilot light but not with the light switch. Is there something we failed to do with the switch for the fireplace? Thank you!

Hi Adam I have a Regency I31 operating with natural gas. I have gas to the pilot, and the piezo ignites the pilot. However, no matter how long I hold the pilot knob in, the pilot flame never stays lit when I let the knob come out. Very frustrating, can you make any suggestions?

My fireplace tuned off by itself and I tried to lit it on but failed. My igniter sparks but pilot won't lit. What's the problem do you think? Thank you

Hello, thanks for sharing, I have different issue, my fireplace is fully o automatic, with a remote, so the problem I have is the fireplace very often won’t light up, ignitor works fine, and then valve supposed to open lighting up the fireplace, but it’s not happening most of the time, so it’s waiting, and after 20-30 sec it’ shuts off, then, after couple minutes it tries to do the same, itself, it getting signal from remote where thermo sensor seats, so it’s trying, if no success (most of a time), shuts off again, and it does this trying 3 times, if no success kits shuts off,
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance

One more thing. I live at the top of a cliff. Today we are having wind gusts to 50 mph. This is blowing into my sidewall vent and causing the gas to shut off. So if your fireplace keeps shutting off, maybe it could be wind gusts too. This also happens with my ttw blower on my Bryant high efficiency furnace during blizzards. Not fun!!!.Luckily the vents are on 2 different sides of house, but when the wind is Northwest it can take down both. Nobody thought about this when the house was built obviously. I need a fireplace on the Southeast corner for ocean blizzard days, which are many here in Gloucester, MA. Nor’easter storm winds are brutal and cause a “Perfect Storm” attack on my gas vents!
