Could you do a 120ST with the Pro Racing induction kit perhaps? Best of both worlds seems like, but very pricy. And what's with titanium rings!? Titanium is a reactive metal. I have hear horror stories about AR rifles with titanium firing pins that scored and ended up fusing with the bolt under high heat conditions after repeated firing. Wouldn't titanium rings gall up or fuse to the pistons? Valve springs is ok because they aren't in the cylinder and they get cooled by oil and aren't friction parts.
The RX kit would fit right on the ST, the R just gets a more aggressive cam and a bullet cam plate with a high volume oil pump. Other than that they are the same motor. They must be coated or something but they haven't had any issues with the rings sticking.
As for me , Yes. I want to change my 96 engine to 120 engine.)) That's f.cking good engine. Give's me more power and fun. Appreciate that video. Helped me understood more
Ran my 120r for over 55,000mi. Never had any problems whatsoever. 134hp, 129 ft/lbs. modified it to 124” t-man specs. Now 156hp, 151 ft/lbs. never seen a S&S motor stay together that long, or put out those numbers
I recently purchased a 2014 Street Glide with a 120R in it. Its basically my daily rider in Australia. I can confrm it doesnt like traffic and loves to run. I love it. Many thanks to the team at Harley Heaven in Melbourne.
Does it Heat up in traffic I suggest the ultra cool 3.0 dual fan oil cooler and get the matching finned reusable oil filter. Mine never runs hotter than 240.
@rodgerbaer6382 well its currently getting a rebuild at the moment. Im on a loan bike. 😁 So far i have had it for 3 months and put on about 6000 miles on it. All parts on slow row boat from USA.
Is it worth getting the motor? What was total cost for you for motor and the injectors and induction system? Looking at this kit instead of building line
Great to hear! Those 120R's are awesome motors, I've talked to several people who do cross country touring with them. I was really surprised to hear that! But they are basically the same motor as the street version just with a hotter cam which makes a huge difference!
I have a 2001 Fatboy. I installed the 120R engine about 4 months ago. It has bit over 6500 miles now with no problems at all. Gas mileage, when riding long distance is about 32 mpg. I installed an oil cooler because the summers in south Texas are brutal. Added a SE ignition system module and high capacity coils. I've had no problems at lower speeds. If you do, just drop it down a gear (I have a SE 6 speed transmission) Personally I love the engine and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
Just did 1000mile trip this week with my 120r, ran like a top, and I was getting about 25-35miles more per tank then my dad with a 103 kit. Power is fun at first but leaves you looking for more. Thanks for the video, not enough videos on these motors.
Thank you! I appreciate the comment on a long trip with a 120R, a lot of people say they aren't reliable. If anything they are more reliable than the stock motors with that heavy duty crank and premium components.
My 2008 Ultra has the 120R and my 2014 Wide Glide has the 120RX. Experience has taught me that the HD lifters are wanting. They have cost me a lot of money when they have failed. I managed around 160,000K's or 100,000 miles on the 120R before a crank up engine rebuild. Awesome motors, they should have been available as optional original equipment. Stay upright. Cheers all.
The lifters have been the main issue l've heard a lot about. 100k on a 120R is impressive, they built them solid for sure. I really like that billet crank they put in there.
G'day team, it was interesting to hear what you had to say about the 120R and thanks for your comments. Currently I have one fitted to my 2009 CVO Springer Softail and it copes quite well with day to day traffic and riding but in saying that this would be different for everyone because we all live in different areas and population. Mine is fitted with a 55mm HPI throttle body only because it was originally for the 110 motor and a D&D 2 into 1. I had the o'l girl on the dyno and it came out at 108hp and 128 torque, yes the numbers are low and possibly due to the 55mm TB but it's a tough street motor and yes it pulls at wide open so hang on if you decide to get one yourself. A few items I would highly recommend you also fit is an upgraded clutch and basket, I fitted a Barnett item and it's great as you would expect. If you decide to head for the 120ST version spend a bit more and add the cam plate and oil pump as an upgrade. which ever choice you make remember to have a good look at the compensator because it may need updating as well. I believe that the one big advantage is the Screamn Eagle Crank Shaft as the Twin Cams suffer from a poor crankshaft and the improved crank bearings as well so if you did a price comparison with upgrading the current twin cam to buying the 120R it's a no brainer. Just one other thing with the 120R is they have an issue with the lifters failing so make sure you change out the SE valve springs for a set of bee hive one able to hag on to the 266E. I hope this is of some use to anyone out there, keep the shiny side up won't you. Regards VM.
That's what l was looking for, you have one and you have a first hand account of how they run on the street! Thank you for mentioning the clutch and compensator, lol need it or not at the time those aren't bad to go ahead and upgrade also.
I feel the same way.bigger TB, Beehive springs a must, Thunder Max cost a good bit but worth the money .Last but most important Barnett clutch .we have good results with this combo .
I have a 2010 Fatboy Lo with the 120R. Bought the bike new in 2010, had them split the cases before I took possession and installed the 113 Stage IV kit. I had V&H Big Radius 2 into 2 exhaust, very loud and hit hard, bottom end power wasn’t great, but the engine came on hard at 3k to red line. That engine was stout, but an inner cam bearing came apart around 16k miles, destroyed engine, so I bought the 120R crate engine to replace it, has a Freedom Exhaust 2 into 1 and used same induction I had on 113. 120R with Freedom exhaust has much better bottom end, and actually is more low speed friendly, rather docile. Around town riding is fine, much better manners than the 113 setup, but did produce a lot of heat, so I put a Jag fan assist cooler on it to remove some heat. Still comes on hard from 3k to redline.
That's awesome to hear that 120 has some bottom end. Looking at power curve on the dyno it goes almost straight up after 3k rpm. It's been a while since I heard anything about a 113.
I run a 120R on the street and track, I am very happy with it. I have taken a few long trips with it 500+ miles. It performs great and 45 mpg on the road. That's not as good as the hopped up 96,but I'm happy with it. My best is 7.05sec. 100 mph in 1/8 and 11.0 sec. 118 in 1/4. I run a thunder max tuner and pump gas. I would not recommend this set up for a new Rider. It can be a hand full on the street. But it is strong and I haven't broke it yet.
That's awesome to hear, with the power and torque it makes it makes sense it can be good street motor. Lol if you can resist staying out of the throttle. Definently not a engine for a beginner, they are not very forgiving when they get loose.
2010 street glide running the 120R, Thunder Max tuner, Bassani 2 into 1 exhaust with ghost pipe, Baker 6 speed grudge box and fan assisted oil cooler. Change the oil every 2k miles with Harleys 20/50 and she does fine. Had motor installed 2 years ago, absolutely no regrets,,,,, ADVISE FOR THE HARD RIDERS TOURING MODELS,,,, get the Baker 6 speed, you will need it. 👊😈🤙
I just purchased the Harley Breakout CVO FXSEE 2014 with a 120R in it. I love this thing. It is incredibly responsive and the most fun iv'e everhadon a bike.Yes - not great at slow speeds and in traffic, but if you ride it like race bike it's gotta lot of love. You gotta respect this bike - i feel it could lift the front in 4th or fifth gear it's got that much torque and power.
I have 2016 RGS with the 120r Pro RX with hurricane heads . I ride city and Hwy and you can feel the chug on city streets in stop and go traffic . Nothing you can’t get use to . I did add the ultra cool elec twin fan oil cooler which made a huge difference with heat . I can run 90 degree days no problem . I have encountered a few so called fast guys on the road . Smoked them in 3 gears well over 100mph . If your into wheelies or burn outs no problem . I also added a vision tuner just in case I want to ramp up the horsepower. Bikes Bad Ass !
The best combination, and I know from my own experience by running a 120R (and 120RX) in my FLD for me is to modify the combination with the 267E cam only without the rest of the RX mods and take it to the track on race gas and the roads on pump gas. Still learning with this idea for now. Updates later, and soon. Have made 133hp, 129lbft tq so far with this combination. Cycle-Rama and Tampa HD improving the bikes chassis with Ohlines shocks etc. and Cycle-Rama tuning the engine after improving the 120R heads.
Hey! I love Wes and Pam!! They did my head work on my sporty and are currently finishing up the last litle bit i could not. I’m buying a flhx with a 120r today and am pumped. I might bring it to Wes to do a little more to it. We will see. Lol
@@kriskirk7814 Wes of Cycle Rama did some head work on my 120R. The result with the 267 cam and without the Hurricane Heads is 135 hp and 131 ft. lbs. of torque on pump 93 octane gas. The 120R with Hurricane Heads will not run on pump gas, only race gas, without retarding the timing or lowering the compression to 11.5; Wes helped by modifying the Harley heads that came with the 120 R. I will modify the engine for bagger GT racing next month and hopefully gain more power and torque with a cam more suitable for road racing and what-ever-else modifications it takes to reach the maximum horsepower and torque possible with this engine.
DAILY driving a bike I just bought. 2008 Road King with 120R. Ported polished oil pump, 660 cams, head work, 64mm throttle body, high flow injectors. This thing has some intense power. Only had it a few days. Much more power than my S&S 113 in my rigid Swift chopper.
10 years now with my 120R in E-Glide. Both daily street riding as well as long-range continental. Alaska Highway to the Keys, AZ, TX, Sierra Nevadas, 101 - you name it. I blew the head-gaskets while heading two-up through Phoenix in August to see the Def Lepard / Journey show, stuck in grid-locked traffic. Other than that, absolutely problem free....
Both engines are pretty impressive. I think for my riding style and my bike, I’d probably find a motor from S&S more fitting for me. But that’s a long way off. I’ll be running my 96 into the dirt before investing in a swap like that. Enjoyed the video man
i work for an unofficial Harley shop and we got a Fatbob in with the 120RX hurricane on the dyno we got 264 Torque and 235HP result even the boss that did the ride test was shaky after he got back to the shop...hes words in a slight scream was " this thing is a death wish" this bike is so powerful you barely release clutch and it starts running its scary actually😅
I ride a 120rx in my road king every day as my daily vehicle and he’s right, those .660 cams and all that compression make her want to fly all the time. But if you take your time to learn the engine, it’s my favorite street engine. Just added dual coolers so it wasn’t so hot
@@GixxerFoo I’m not to savvy breakout is still my first bike I have the 103 in it (noncvo). If you had to build it for everyday and wanted a bada$$ monster too, what would you do? I currently have stage 1 k&n (heavy breather look alike) and Magnaflow by Arlen ness exhaust with a dynojet power vision auto tuner. I’m trying to unleash that thing something fierce or should I just buy a crate engine? Was look at s&s hot 124 setup and all sorts of other mods.
Really? The widbands are just a Bosch sensor, you can get those sensors and change the plug on the end. The stock sensors are narrow bands and won't read that wide range.
I just picked up a 2014 street light special with the 120R crate motor in it running the 58 mm induction. For straight riding what are the shift points they're best suited to that engine I know in the video he said wide open throttle. Just trying to get a feel for it.
That's awesome!!! Those 120R engines are honestly no joke, they have the biggest factory cam you can get in one. Honestly a very reliable engine a lot of people comment on going cross country with them and I've seen a few myself.
@GixxerFoo My light came with a 4 inch basani 2 into 1 pipe, didn't see anything baffles, I was looking to possibly put true duals with deeper tips any suggestions And they also failed to include the Screaming eagle tuner.😢
Great video, i just to have a 103 with stage 4 kit on my fatboy 2013 feels powerful but i decide to do a swap for a 120 R, and yes, is another level a lot of power all the way up, very fun to ride in curves and straight lines as well, good for long haul. I added an oil cooler and works perfect. On an engine for racing there will be no guarantee. Keep posting. Twin cams are very strong
I have a 06 street glide with the 120r. It’s been almost 1000 miles and it goes like a raped ape. Faster than any other bike I’ve ever ridden with. Highly recommend.
So for a 2003 FXDWG anniversary model will the 120R fit in it with no problems? Also if the S&S might be better what size of S&S engine would that be or what is the name of that engine?
I'm looking at another $4K for pistons, cams, lifters, pushrods, cam plate, oil pump, pushrods, valve springs, retainers, and keepers to take my SE110B/117 Stage IV to the next level. Honestly, $6K plus a cam swap almost seems like a better deal.
@@GixxerFoo I don't pay to have anything done, I've been building stuff for forty years, I trust VERY few people with my stuff. But, honestly, I could buy a new 120R, if they're still available, swap the cams out, use the 58MM throttle body and high flow injectors from the 117 Stage IV onto the 120R, and go have it tuned. It would probably be quicker and easier. And perform as well or better. And, I'd still have the 117 to play with. Maybe if my wife decided she wanted something different, I would just swap the 117 in place of the 96 on the Night Train. It's just something I started thinking about, when I started adding up the parts, and my time, that I'd invest in upgrading my 117. Funny, on back to back dyno pulls, an S&S 124T had less than a 12HP margin over my 117. Otherwise, I might look at an S&S engine.
👋 everone, what would the dealers install in these 120R build across the nation , in all dealers ? For instance: with a 64mm throttle, what size & type of cams , what timing would be set , what compression , what fuel grade , what is the normal running temp , Thanks
Exactly, I would rather have the dependable Long haul bike then one to see how fast you can get to the next ice House. It takes more than just money to handle those ponies. Just saying
Agreed. Honestly once I upgraded 88 to a 95 the motor has done very well (Oil Cooler Added) It just won’t die. If I were to upgrade I think I would go to S&S 124 as well.
@@GixxerFoo Tony Nicosia designed this engine for strength and power. No one else in modern history else in modern history of motorcycle engine design for both strength and power has more knowledge and expertise. While S&S is a favorite of mine as well, the master of power and strength cannot be denied.
I run these LED projectors from Sunpi in my bikes, they look just like the Harley-Davidson Day Maker. I've been running them for 5 years and had zero issues, it's a major difference over stock. They make these in smoke and chrome, you'll just have to verify if your headlight is 5 3/4 or 7 inch. www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Headlight-Davidson-sportster-Projector/dp/B018LXCV4U/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1FD89GKB7XND7&dchild=1&keywords=sunpie+headlight&qid=1616274536&sprefix=sunpi+headli%2Caps%2C266&sr=8-5
I have a Wisamic from Amazon on my 07 Night Train. It cost $55, and looks and functions just like the Harley Davidson Daymaker on my 2016 CVO Pro Street Breakout. In fact, it has an LED halo, you can see it for a 1/2 mile in daylight, on low. Makes me real happy, my wife is a new rider and rides my Train, I like that it is nearly impossible to not see her.
Im stroked out with a screaming eagle 103 twin cam and 543 reaper cams...and even tho i hang with m8 114 and 117s..i still eant more power...but i have a 04 softail fatboy trying to find out if i can get a 120r in there
Chain drive 32/51 re geared...performance springs Gorilla lifters and modified s.e heads! Plus the s.e stroker crank...I haul ass..but I know I can be faster
Guys I am looking for some help I found a beautiful 09 RG that’s got a 120R built and installed by Cox HD I am in love with the bike and the power but I am hearing a lot of negative things about the motor saying it runs very hot and blah , blah , blah. I am buying a bike because I lost my last bike to MS and I want to ride again. I’ve asked him questions but he doesn’t seem to really know much any words or wisdom
The 120R does run hot, but a good rich tune, oil cooler and free flowing exhaust really helps keep the heat down. I've seen guys that ride with a 120R motor as a daily and do cross country touring on them. They have all the Screamin Eagle parts in them top to bottom, my honest opinion they are more solid than a regular off the line Twin Cam 103.
You would have to run octane booster or really drop the compression down to make it work on pump gas. The compression is so high on those you need some good high octane fuel.
@@GixxerFoo We tried octane booster to no joy; then one engineer decided to retard the timing 5 degrees; that made the engine stop pulling on upgrades. When we first installed the RX kit, I had to run it on race gas (110 octane) and it made a great deal of horsepower, but I didn't have the engineer dyno the bike at that time :( I ran it on a country road and it was very fast; I decided it was at a ridiculous cost so I asked if the engineer (H-D shop) could find a way to make it run on pump premium gas. The result was retarding the timing 5 degrees, which caused losing power going uphill. At present I have it at Iron Horse Performance (a H-D certified shop); the owner is a master HD engine builder. His plan has great promise for big power; details too much to mention here, but will post them when the engine is finished; I will include photos and cutlines.
Is it not true that belt drives are limited to 100 HP or less because they snap at higher than that? I ask because I have seen some high-horsepower Harley's with double and triple row chains. That's the reason why I'm asking.
The 120R is surprisingly a very reliable motor, a lot of people go cross country touring with them. A little secret though, those motors are the same engine as the ST street version just with a hotter cam!
Hey man, thanks for this video. I've wanted a general summary and comparison of these equivalent motors for quite some time. We should note that "horsepower" is a fictitious number derived from measurable torque x RPM meaning usually, that horsepower number gains denote increased flow at higher RPM and conversely, sacrificing torque at lower RPM (waiting for the blowback as soon as I hit "send"). With your explanation here I'd likely stick with the "R" (no X-pro) and find a torque cam for it being I really never redline or race stop to stop (my days of doing that are long since gone). In the comments I also see people tour with these things (I tour on a stripped down Softail) so that eases concerns however, what additional mods would be required downstream; i.e.: primary chain, clutch, (existing 5 speed trans) and belt? No need for specificity but your general thoughts would be great. Footnote: I'll never understand in comments why people must put others down so offensively for some items not included in anyone's UA-cam productions we get for free. Impressed you took a higher road not feeding on chum thrown add-hock to sharks. Good job and thanks!
Thank you, l appreciate your support of the channel. These are really good motors, l would definently add an oil cooler if you don't have one already. For me the two things l would do installing one of these is upgrade to a Screamin Eagle compensator and and look at a good high performance clutch upgrade. Definitely a compensator, the clutch would just depend on how hard you plan on riding the bike.
The 120 cylinders wouldn't bolt on, the cases would have to be bored to fit the cylinders. To get a true 120 you'd have to get a stroker crank and pistons as well.
The 120R is goes for sells for about 5$695 for 06 up Dyna and Touring models, 07 and later softails are $5999, 02 to 06 Dyna and touring $6195 and 01-06 Softails $6195. If you have a dealer doing the work, that's about the same cost as what buying a Stage 4 kit and having it dealer installed would run. But doing the 120R you can keep your spare motor or sell it to recoup cost. Plus you have a documented paper trail from Harley-Davidson for your bike showing that 120R belongs in that bike since the motor won't have your bike's vin.
Not a problem, l love to get the word out there. Thank you, l appreciate your support! Let me know if you have any video suggestions, l make a lot of videos from viewer feedback.
That's a good question, with the only difference mechanically being a cam. But the R does have a bullet cam plate and high volume oil pump. The ST would have a "legal" tine which is gonna be very lean if you kept to legal specs.
Hey man finally i have a video suggestion. Could you show how to clean a sporster properly. Thanks man. Love your videos but that intro sound is making me laugh every time i hear it. I guess thats a good thing
This is the kit I basically put on my bike the only difference is is I used the 4 and 3/8 in crank I don't need all that extra stunk I only weigh 160 the heads and my 67 g's mean with the shorter crank I can run up to 7200 RPM that's how I get my 124 horse out of a 111... My torque is still low enough I can handle the bike barely and the horsepower is off the hook
That's a huge benefit to building your own motor, there's a lot of ways to get the power. Sometimes l think Harley goes the long way to make the spec sheet longer 🤷♂️.
@@GixxerFoo Harley literally delivers the bottom of their market their engines can make crazy power but they don't need it it's like you said an 88 does just fine for your regular guys I am an idiot and like to go fast
To get to a 110 you'd be looking at splitting the cases and going back with a stroker crank and the big bore cylinders. The 95 inch kits are bolt on big bore cylinders and a set of cams. They will up your power to over 80 horsepower and get your torque up to 100ftlbs. That's with a kit that has mild cams. The 88's shorter stroke works very well when converted to a 95 inch.
A Screamin Eagle kit with cams is about 1K, but aftermarket kits are a bit less. 95 kits are a great way to go on the 88 and still keep the reliability. Cams alone provide a nice boost, but the 95 is the way to get the most out of it.
GixxerFoo Ok thanks and sone more thing where would you recommend I get the kit. I’m on the east coast but I guess who ever you recommend will ship the parts
If you're interested in the Screamin Eagle kit you'd have to get that through a Harley dealer. I personally like Fuel Moto and S&S, they will ship right to your door.
Same here doing a short stroke M8 motor now. 4.310 bore x 4.375 stroke 128ci. Good rod to stroke ratio good ring life. Factory plus one valve CNC ported heads & intake aftermarket moderate lift cam. Pretty easy to get safe tune 150/150 WHP TQ motor that lives.
They've proved to be really awesome motors in the ST version, you can pop an aftermarket cam in there and you pretty much have more than a 120R. 120R didn't come with a throttle body like the ST, but you don't really need a 64mm throttle body which is what they try to sell you.
Yes Harley Store or Harley whatever it's a dealership under Harley franchise I don't know but a Harley dealer. Get a load of this I take my nightster in 7 thousand kilometers I was sending it to a fellow out by Montreal for head work cams etc. The dealership calls and say we have a company through Harley does heads we have all Harley stuff. I'm sold the mechanic working on the bike was ok and have had no problems to date with mechanical other than natural stuff consumed clutch. So I wanted to order the Nightster fender and parts as the Canadian version did not look like the nightsters advertised. They told me it was an illegal mod. It should be illegal to put something together at that price with e dynos the last one being the final dyno setting the engine timing ect. They changed nothing from some can map for a 551. My complaint was how do you do that the numbers are different between the cams. Anyway sorted now took 2 years and a camera went looked inside to see pitted pistons .imagine the head is the same. So now I'll use other runners not the Harley peo tune.funny other company's have maps for Harley cams. So I'll get Andrews or s&s or redline no more Harley expensive parts I'm Gina pay I'll pay but I'll pay now for specialized as Harley don't hold their own. Sad. I love harley
The "download" as it is often referred to for tuning on some of the Harley Dealer installations is awful. If you're sticking with all Harley performance parts it's well worth getting the Screamin Eagle Tuner. I don't think I've ever seen a bike that ran right with the canned download map for their parts. In my opinion even the factory tune on new bikes isn't really that great, but it works alright since the standardized assembly process. Even a with a Harley Tech doing the install, doing everything right, the canned map just doesn't work. If you buy the tuner and the dealer installs, the technician will map the bike with the tuner and run it on a dyno. If the dealer doesn't have a dyno, a good dealer will run some auto tune sessions and make sure it's right before they send it out.
The pro runner was the saving grace.i knew something did not sound right going through the throttle to excelerate and I'm talking normal excelration I'd go through the one set of numbers reamed havovic. The pro runner soon as I seen it like how is one cylinder 14 degrees higher than the other and then a 1000 rpms away the other cylinder. I start slow one cell at a time worked to a basic map with no advance and slowly added some back in it did work a 6000 rpm but who lives there on a street bike and even them no would jugle around for no apparent reason like 26 degrees dropping back to 23 and in the next cell jumping to 29 made no sense. They justified it on irregular firing of the Harley motor. So my response was a 536 cam has been around along time before EFI and apparently it's the same grind with the exception of some difference on the cam for EFI but the grind is identical so I asked them how did you need able to do this with points as I see no difference well big difference but the actual rotations are all the same. Thank-you for the light you show us on problems we can face and for you help suggestions and advice love it Thank-you
Thank you! Fuel injection love it or hate it on a Harley, it's given us the ability to tune each cylinder individually. This really helps with cooling down that rear cylinder and allowing us to get more precise VE tables.
Lol well talking about this reminds of some of the hot rod Harleys I've had the opportunity to ride. A Harley that puts the big power down is a ride like none other.
Yeah it won't work for the Softail, butnthe 120R will fit and it's basically the same engine. Just a more aggressive cam and an upgraded cam plate with a high volume oil pump.
@@GixxerFoo so, the 120R is a balanced motor ? Nice, but way too aggressive for the street in my opinion.....I like the occasional holeshot , but I don't want to be at the bar 3 pitchers in by the time everybody else catches up 🤪🤣
Not sure why someone would want or needs the 120R but to each their own. The only reason i can see is the person who wants this needs & craves attention among his group of riders. I have a 107 i my 2021 Street Glide and its more power than i will ever need, hell the speed limit is 70mph
The only reason the Harley says the 120st doesn’t fit in dyna models is cause it comes with an electronic throttle body. Does this guy even research what the hell he’s talking about!!!
That is true, also Harley won't warranty it if you put it in a Dyna and swap out to a cable throttle body. But yes you are correct, technically it can be put in a Dyna.
@@GixxerFoo I tried the careful tuning route but I don't think I found the right engine master tuner :) so, if you know how to do the trick, please let me know?
I'm done with Harley racing parts. They don't stand behind their products. I had a multi gauge tack speedo fuel gauge for 1000 bucks roughly and Al I got was the rpm and speedo rest of it including sending unit. They left me on my own and it was their tech did install. So to make thing worse on the same build 536 cams not to mention a bill on nearly 10 grand for all the work on the bike it ran like shit the timing was a mess it look like Harley threw handfuls of random numbers. Bad experience from now on I go to other companies for performance stuff I love Harley's but that's it there worthless with the support you need. Who sells a cam and after installing it tell you gee we can't get a map for it. How do you think I feel. From Kingston Ontario canada
Oh wow, l am sorry to hear that, was this from a dealership? I've had some bad experiences with dealers out there, fortunately my local one will eat the cost to make it right.
Would you upgrade a 120ST or go with a 120R and add you own induction system?
Could you do a 120ST with the Pro Racing induction kit perhaps? Best of both worlds seems like, but very pricy. And what's with titanium rings!? Titanium is a reactive metal. I have hear horror stories about AR rifles with titanium firing pins that scored and ended up fusing with the bolt under high heat conditions after repeated firing. The RX kit would fit right on the ST, the R just gets a more aggressive cam and a bullet cam plate with a high volume oil pump. Other than that they are the same motor. They must be coated or something but they haven't had any issues with the rings sticking.
Buy an S&S motor.
I would go with something that makes even more power
S&S
As for me , Yes. I want to change my 96 engine to 120 engine.)) That's f.cking good engine. Give's me more power and fun. Appreciate that video. Helped me understood more
Ran my 120r for over 55,000mi. Never had any problems whatsoever. 134hp, 129 ft/lbs. modified it to 124” t-man specs. Now 156hp, 151 ft/lbs. never seen a S&S motor stay together that long, or put out those numbers
Hi, do you still ride that engine?
Cheers
I have over 20,000 miles on my 120r and it still runs amazing!!!
That's awesome! It really is a good street motor with the proper maintenance and cooling!
Is it worth getting the motor? What was total cost for you for motor and the injectors and induction system? Looking at this kit instead of building line
@@CodyMcDonald89 I love the motor and the power of it. I can't remember what was all installed since it was 8 years ago when I put it in.
Love my 2015 120r road glide 5 years running like a new bike 10,000 miles running top speeds 140 plus with ease. Great motor!
If you do, just drop it down a gear
(I have a SE 6 speed transmission)
Personally I love the engine and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
Damn you have one hell of a nice ride! Those 120R's are really reliable engines, some people run cross country with then in touring bikes.
@@GixxerFoo you may have a problem sir....😳
What happened?!
@@GixxerFoo lol..this power thing can make a person go mad!!!😀
😆😂 it's a rabbit hole for sure, it just keeps going. It depends how much you want to spend and how far you're willing to go.
Dose the 120R get hot like the 110SC ?
@@juanmendoza3213 I don't know anything about the 110 motor, I know mine gets hot but they are air cooled and that is to be expected.
Yeah it runs warm, a good oil cooler, air cleaner, exhaust and tune will cool it off quite a bit.

Love my 120r! 2005 deuce! 6 speed screaming eagle trans.rhinhart 2 into 1 exhaust. She rolls!
How long have you had your 120R in there? I bet it hauls ass in that Softail frame!
What kind of mods did you have to do to get it to fit? I have a 02 fxst.
I went from a 96 to a 120rx. What a beast! Tons of power,now I want more..lol yearly overhaul will include a 124 upgrade for sure
Dang going from a 96 to an RX that had to feel like a rocket!
That's interesting, keep me updated on how what you find with this!

Thank you, l appreciate it! I remember searching high and low for things and l wanted to put as much as l could in one place.
Both engines are pretty impressive. I think for my riding style and my bike, I’d probably find a motor from S&S more fitting for me. But that’s a long way off. I’ll be running my 96 into the dirt before investing in a swap like that.
Enjoyed the video man
Thank you, yeah S&S is probably a better investment. They are built without the factory issues and arguably higher quality parts.
Is that a special option or does it come with the engine already?
It's a pretty tight tolerance too and you gotta hope it stays that way too.
It's not an issue if you're getting a new motor from S&S, especially in the long run with their cranks.
Baker is proud of their products but they are worth the $$
Great video, I prefer the 120R. The 120ST is a good engine too, it just depends on the way you ride. Both engines can be modified to fit the rider.
Thank you! O think the 120R would be the way to go myself.
i work for an unofficial Harley shop and we got a Fatbob in with the 120RX hurricane on the dyno we got 264 Torque and 235HP result even the boss that did the ride test was shaky after he got back to the shop...hes words in a slight scream was " this thing is a death wish"
this bike is so powerful you barely release clutch and it starts running its scary actually😅
Holy crap! Is that someone's street ride?! Well, at least the Fat Bob is a really good handling bike 🤷♂️.
264tq and 235hp?! Are you sure you don’t mean 164tq and 135hp?
I've got 27000 miles on my 120r with a wood cam. Tons of low rpm torque and plenty of power for everything
Love it ! It's got a issue gonna be pulling the motor soon probably going with the bigger kit for the 120R
I ride a 120rx in my road king every day as my daily vehicle and he’s right, those .660 cams and all that compression make her want to fly all the time. But if you take your time to learn the engine, it’s my favorite street engine. Just added dual coolers so it wasn’t so hot
I've been always said a really hot rod engine can be a good street engine if you keep them cool, dual coolers works very very well.

It really is a better deal, and labor cost is a lot cheaper to just swap a motor if your paying to have it done,
@@GixxerFoo
I don't pay to have anything done, I've been building stuff for forty years, I trust VERY few people with my stuff.
Hi , do you know what is the minimum fuel pressure for the R120 Engine ?
👋 everone, what would the dealers install in these 120R build across the nation , in all dealers ?

😄😂 It's never enough once you start down that road, it keeps going till you're broke if you let it.
GixxerFoo broke engine or wallet - 😂
Lol just depends which comes first 😆😬
Exactly, I would rather have the dependable Long haul bike then one to see how fast you can get to the next ice House. It takes more than just money to handle those ponies. Just saying
For that money I'd go with the S&S 124 and get gear drive cams plus their flywheels which are much stronger.
S&S is hard to beat, they fix the weak points in those twin cam engines.
Agreed. Honestly once I upgraded 88 to a 95 the motor has done very well (Oil Cooler Added) It just won’t die. If I were to upgrade I think I would go to S&S 124 as well.
The S&S in my opinion is a much better engine, they engineered out the factory weak spots.
@@GixxerFoo Tony Nicosia designed this engine for strength and power.
Can you tell me how to get the 120RX version to run on pump premium gas?
I'm kinda nervous about to buy a bike with a 120r crate engine in a street glide will be a daily driver hoping I don't have any issues lol
The 120R is surprisingly a very reliable motor, a lot of people go cross country touring with them. A little secret though, those motors are the same engine as the ST street version just with a hotter cam!
@@GixxerFoo any tips you can give me would be much appreciated I'm new to the harley scene the engine only has 900 miles on it
can this 120R engine be install it on street bob 2016?
I am getting about 165 hp on my 120rx.
Damn that's awesome, that's impressive on a two valve head! Hell that's what the new M8 131R race motor puts out.
Crazy question.....Will it fit a 103 block or a 110?

Plus you have a documented paper trail from Harley-Davidson for your bike showing that 120R belongs in that bike since the motor won't have your bike's vin.
i bought the second 120r to hit street in 2010 its a bmf
People tour on those motors and ride them daily, keep them serviced and taken care of, they are pretty reliable street motors.
Would this bolt into my ‘17 FXSB Softail Breakout ?
The motor will fit in the frame but you might have to update the compensator on the 2017.

Ah , ok thank u for the reply . I just happened upon your channel today. Instantly smashed the subscribe button . Good stuff 👍🏽
Not a problem, l love to get the word out there. Thank you, l appreciate your support! Let me know if you have any video suggestions, l make a lot of videos from viewer feedback.
I wonder how long it will last beating on it stoplight to stoplight daily I imagine the ST will last longer than the R
That's a good question, with the only difference mechanically being a cam. But the R does have a bullet cam plate and high volume oil pump. The ST would have a "legal" tine which is gonna be very lean if you kept to legal specs.
Needs fueling race lifters
Hey man finally i have a video suggestion. Could you show how to clean a sporster properly. Thanks man. Love your videos but that intro sound is making me laugh every time i hear it. I guess thats a good thing
Lol makes it memorable, yeah I'll see about getting a video together that. Not a bad idea, bikes are different than cars
I know a guy with a 120R in a dyna on street. He said just change lifters eve 20,000 kilometres
Dang, yeah that big cam is not very friendly to the lifters. Did he go back with SE lifters or swap out for something from like S&S.
I put 350 TBI chevy lifters in my 88 and they been working fine
Engine direct from Hell.
😆😂 no kidding, they are really unforgiving. You make a mistake with one of these motors and you will pay for it.
Top video tiger 🐅
Thank you!
Is this street legal in Australia?
My buddy has a 120R in a Dyna making around 130/130 bhp/tq. with a ThunderMax ecu.
It is for sale if anyone is interested.
No warranty on these things in Australia.
I don't believe you get one on the R here either, you get a year on the ST.
Does anyone have experience with a Dragon 143 S&S motor? I'm running a 106 stoker with nitrous n ALWAYS chasing the precious HP!!..🤑😊
I'd be curious to know just how many of those 143's were actually sold, that was one insane motor!
I run a 120 rx.I get 165 h.p.You better hold on with both hands.
So what can I do for my 2003 ultra classic to upgrade. What would you recommend. I want more power and torque. Can I go up to 110cu
GixxerFoo ok thanks so you would recommend the the 95 kit then. What should I be looking at price range?
I like the shorter stroke 117” , longer ring life pretty equal power.
There's a lot to be said about short stroke motors, they will run hard!
What cam are you running
A video idea why is the deuce such a redheaded stepchild?
I have often wondered that myself, same thing with the Rocker.
Dont forget the fxs blackline.
how much for the R
Just a motor about 6k, not cheap but they are a monster.
120R with a more mild cam..Perhaps the 260.
Lol that's a mean cam compared to to a stock 103 cam.
120st is great for the street, it would be powerful enough. Atleast for awhile
They've proved to be really awesome motors in the ST version, you can pop an aftermarket cam in there and you pretty much have more than a 120R. 120R didn't come with a throttle body like the ST, but you don't really need a 64mm throttle body which is what they try to sell you.
Put a S&S D carb with 3 thunderjets
Probably put down over 160 hp
You dump the fuel and have a good tuner work their magic there's no telling what it could do!
Thank-you for the light you show us on problems we can face and for you help suggestions and advice love it
Thank-you
Thank you! Fuel injection love it or hate it on a Harley, it's given us the ability to tune each cylinder individually. This really helps with cooling down that rear cylinder and allowing us to get more precise VE tables.
120R is streetable. Just gotta pull her hair or she'll get pissed😉
That 120R likes to run!
That shelf behind you is crying for help.
😆😂 that has become quite the conversation piece on the channel.
@@GixxerFoo oh I see... taking advantage of us OCD folks, eh? 🤣
😆😂 oh it makes me crazy too. I have a new shelf but there's been so much discussion about this one l have just left it there.
mhow much $$ for SP
👍😎
I appreciate the support!
120 motors will drop right in a dyna but not even close in a Softail those bikes require a junk B motor !
They do make a B 120R for the Softail, l am not super confident in the B 120R with those balancers.
Those mannerisms you talk about translate into the bike jumping sideways with the front wheel off the ground it's an attention getter
Lol well talking about this reminds of some of the hot rod Harleys I've had the opportunity to ride. A Harley that puts the big power down is a ride like none other.
@@GixxerFoo I'm thinking about going to a right side drive and see if that'll straighten it out
I have ran the R for years and seem to be quite streetable but should run around 25 to 27 on the tack on the street it works for me
That's awesome, l love to see those engines running on the street and working well.
To bad they don't make the ST in a "B" motor. Seems perfect for my Heritage
Yeah it won't work for the Softail, butnthe 120R will fit and it's basically the same engine. Just a more aggressive cam and an upgraded cam plate with a high volume oil pump.
@@GixxerFoo so, the 120R is a balanced motor ? Nice, but way too aggressive for the street in my opinion.....I like the occasional holeshot , but I don't want to be at the bar 3 pitchers in by the time everybody else catches up 🤪🤣
Lol yeah they have an R that fits the Softail. A little milder cam and you have basically the ST.
With enough money and time you can do just about anything ur heart desires
Pretty much, or skilled hands. Fabricators can do whatever they want and make it look factory.
@@GixxerFoo having a little mechanical ability can go a long way. Especially working on harleys, such simple machines
Oh yeah, they aren't bad at all. There's nothing over complicated about the motors, even the new M8.
The 120RX kit ONLY RUNS ON RACE GAS!! You didn't mention that! Why?? Didn't you know??
Yeah l wouldn't recommend it for the street with that compression, a lot of octane booster and careful timing it could be done.
@@GixxerFoo I tried the careful tuning route but I don't think I found the right engine master tuner :) so, if you know how to do the trick, please let me know?
I did find an excellent and knowledgeable tuner in Bill at Iron Horse Performance...I'll update you when he finishes his work! I'm very encouraged :)
Bad experience from now on I go to other companies for performance stuff
I love Harley's but that's it there worthless with the support you need.
Why? It has enough power stock! I could ride a 96 cube, and be content.
It's a monster engine, the power curve is really wild on it. It definently wouldn't go in something l rode all the time.
Good morning! I just woke up here in north Dakota, and the powers out! But looking at harleys is a great way to start the day!
Looking a Harleys makes everything better, hopefully you get your power back soon!
dont waste you money on that motor, buy s&s 124 be done with it much more power for the money.
It's hard to beat S&S, the motors cost more but like you said it's more power. They also engineered out the factory issues.
