  • An expanded viewfinder is an accessory that mounts on your underwater camera housing to create a clear, unobstructed, glare-free view of the entire frame at a more ergonomic and practical viewing angle.
    In this video we’ll break down all of their benefits for SLR, Mirrorless, and even compact cameras, and we’ll show you how to install them on your housing.
    This is essential knowledge for underwater photographers who want to improve their photo composition and quality of life while shooting, and start coming back to the surface with more keeper shots. If you’re like us then you’ll take one look through an expanded viewfinder and never look back.

    I think the external monitor is clearly superior for video, but for photos the expanded viewfinder is better. A monitor costs twice as much, is bulky and heavy, protrudes a lot from the housing (HDMI cable, arm, clamp ....). For video, the rear LCD screen of the MIL can also work, which is certainly not like an external monitor, but an acceptable compromise, for many photographs the 45 degree angle viewfinder is exceptional

    As a shore diver that sidemount dives and at times have deco cylinders as well, adding an extra few inches off the back of my camera doesn't sound fun. I currently dive with an A7iii in the north west pacific where we don't have the bright sunlight issues. I have been using the rear LCD with out issue. I would love to try an expanded viewfinder but its a lot of money to just try.

    Can I ask a question, I use a Sony a7s3 for video, is it helpful or does it enlarge the image a bit? At the moment, I'm using a Ninja monitor, but it's terribly heavy and bulky, especially for macro I Considering switching to a viewfinder

      Macro is where it's the most helpful. It's arguable that a monitor is superior to a viewfinder for most video, but macro is the exception. The new Nauticam viewfinders offer a wider field of view than before making it super easy to see the entire frame through the viewfinder: www.backscatter.com/Nauticam-Full-Frame-Angle-Viewfinder-40-0.81

    Hola ,buenos días. después de ver este video me gustaría saber que viewfinder me recomendarían para mi rx100 VA con carcasa nauticam. Actualmente tengo una lente correctora totalmente recta y básicamente es una lupa correctora pero he visto las limitaciones que tiene respecto a la capacidad y comodidad de un visor con Angulo. La pregunta es, para mi equipo que recomendación me harían.
    Gracias y espero su respuesta

    If one wants to spend this amount of money on a better view option, one might aswell spend 5-600 more and buy the Nauticam 502B-H SmallHD 502 BRIGHT monitor system 🤷

    • @backscatteruw
      @backscatteruw  2 роки тому

      That is certainly the superior option for those that are primarily shooting video. We still feel that an expanded viewfinder is the best tool for the job when primarily shooting photos.

      @@backscatteruw why ?
      I know a few divers who tried both, they prefer the monitor and we mainly shoot macro photo here because of the dive conditions, good visibility is rare here in Denmark 🤷
      And glare is never a problem, because at depths deeper than 10 meters, its often like night diving here 😐

      @@TheBronzorN To be fair our reasoning is mostly subjective, not objective. We simply prefer a viewfinder for the 'immersive' element it can add to composing photos. We prefer to be less distracted by peripheral elements and to "in the scene" a little more, which is what we feel a viewfinder creates. That being said, when shooting macro photo exclusively and without any glare to contend with, we'd be equally happy with a monitor setup :).
