    Ultimate Guide to UW Photography: tutorials.brentdurand.com/learn
    This video shares the best settings for underwater photography. I discuss the general concepts on why these are the best settings, specifically sharing the ISO, aperture and shutter speed for macro and wide-angle on cameras with 1" sensors, micro 4/3 sensors, 1.6x crop sensors, and full frame sensors.
    4:35 - Best settings for 1" sensor cameras
    6:25 - Best settings for Micro 4/3 sensor cameras
    8:20 - Best settings for 1.6x Crop sensor cameras
    11:05 - Best settings for Full Frame sensor cameras
    These underwater camera settings are meant to be starting point in exposing your scene. From here, you will adjust as needed for the specific scene (using some of my other tutorial videos to help with that!).

    Thank you Brent for another informative tutorial. I love the clipped slate graphic! My camera is the Olympus OMD EM1 Mark ll with Nauticam housing and 2 Sea&Sea Strobes and 2 video lights. Using 60mm and 7-14mm and 12-40 lenses. My wife is going to try the Olympus TG-6 and take video using Gobe lights. Next trip "fingers crossed" is Anilao in December! Any suggestions on video settings for both cameras, or helpful hints for Anilao? Thanks for your helpful comments!

      Also using 1/250 sync speed and around F5.6 -F11 and 1/2 power on the strobes. This will be the first real maco experience in Anilao so I will need some practice before the trip at home! Thanks

      Hi Jack - thanks for the kind words... and noticing the dive slate! The easy way to capture video on both settings is to just press the red button, especially on the TG-6. On that one, your wife could try using the aperture mode if she's really looking to control the depth of field (e.g. shooting a small nudibranch up close at f/8).

    A7III, 16-35 or prime 18mm + 2 S&S-YD2j ! Mostly use AF-C. Can't figure what metering mode to use though ? Great videos, as always!

    • @BrentDurand
      @BrentDurand  3 роки тому +1

      Nice! When you're shooting in manual mode the metering mode doesn't matter. You're manually controlling each setting, so the camera doesn't make any decisions using the metering mode.
      If you switch to a semi-auto mode (e.g. for whales and dolphins in ambient light), then the metering mode really depends. In that specific case, I'll use a matrix type metering and then play with exposure compensation.
      Alternatively, you could try spot metering if your subject is really dark against a light water background. Really just takes a little experimenting to dial it in for that shooting situation. Hope that helps!

Also in some point of your video you said something about shuterspeed and the depth for the micro sensors is that the same with all the sensors, so if we go deeper we go to the 2*shuterspeed approximately for the wide angle photos? Also what white balance should I use? Thank you again

    What about compact cameras with 1/1.7" sensors (like the Canon G16)?

    • @BrentDurand
      @BrentDurand  3 роки тому +1

      Great question Gabriel. Default to the settings I labeled as 1" sensor. For macro shooting, use an f/8 aperture (the max). For wide-angle you can still start with f/5, but know that you can use a lower number for most compositions except for close focus wide-angle. It will really depend on the housing and wide-angle wet lens you're using, since different combinations produce different image qualities. Sorry I can't be more precise. Hope this helps!

      Brent Durand, in a nutshell, trying to research for my first set up with the goal of being able to create potentially commercial quality still images and short clips with a wide range of versatility as far as subject/image types from macro up to wide angle and allows for growth as a photographer. I don’t mind making an investment for quality, but don’t know which of the main types of cameras (mirrorless, DSLR, etc) to start with.

    • @BrentDurand
      @BrentDurand  3 роки тому +1

      @@zebrastrong9291 Hi Zebra - This is a topic that fills magazines and forum pages with no definite answers! In the end it comes down to a lot of personal choices (outlined in the video and article linked above). Something like the Sony a6500 could be a great all-around choice. I would go mirrorless if buying everything from scratch, as DSLRs are on their slow way out.
      I do work as as affiliate of one of the major uw camera retailers in California (when you purchase from them I get a small commission while you still get best price available), so if you're comfortable purchasing from them, send me an email and we can really dig in to some specifics!

    Hi thx for this very helpful video. I shoot under water video manuel mode with auto iso support it by histogram and exposure conpensation (wide angle). But iam very confused on which meterin mode to use with ligths or without. Any suggestions? Thx

    • @BrentDurand
      @BrentDurand  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ilker - Since you're using a semi-automatic mode (Auto ISO), the metering mode will make a difference in how the camera determines correct exposure. As a general rule I would use the broad mode (Evaluative on Canon, Multi on Sony, etc.). This way you balance the ambient light exposure in your wide angle scene with the foreground exposure from the video lights. I discuss these exposure principals (focused on manual mode) in these videos, which is still good to understand:
      Light Positioning: ua-cam.com/video/YEcbVIgUanY/v-deo.html

      Hi! My best advice is to write down your favorite settings and things you've learned at the end of each trip so that you have that as a starting point for the next trip... hopefully letting you reduce the learning curve on the next trip. There are no magic settings beyond the starting points I've suggested as they are different for cameras of different sensor sizes and the lens/subject you're shooting.
