Cautionary tale for sure man. This song actually influenced me not to do anything too terribly stupid in my youth. I mean, I was stupid, sure, but stayed away from needles and spoons. Thanks Skynyrd.
I just watched your channel for the first time. Insightful comments. Skynyrd wrote and produced songs about real life issues. Enjoy them. I am a subscriber!
That "choir" is 3 back up singers call the "Honketts". Added to the roster in 1976 and originally featuring the talents of Cassie Gaines, Jojo Billingsley, and Leslie Hawkins, The Honkettes are more than just backup singers. They made back up singers noticeable.
I've been playing guitar since 1976. Steve Gaines, the guy who plays the lead in the middle of the song, was a master. Pretty much my favorite song from this band.
Love this song. Thanks for doing this. Skynyrd is a really, REALLY good band. Props. Please check out the beautiful, almost anthemic, "Tuesday's Gone". Soooo sweet on the ears. Enjoy, indeed.
It was tragic in the sense that the crash happened when the band was starting to try to pull themselves back up. That's part of what this song was. A wake up call to the band. What I also love about this song is how it demonstrates the prowess and chemistry of guitarists Gary Rossington,Allen Collins, and Steve Gaines (who had replaced previous guitarist Ed King). As a guitarist this song is a treat to my ears. And yes,you do hear the creepy in the song. It was a really dark time for the band. The world of great Lynyrd Skynyrd songs is vast.....enjoy your exploration,my friend!
This had the best guitar jams of any Skynyrd song. Steve Gaines, the madman on the Les Paul who slays everyone in this song, was one of those who died.
The Oak tree is referring to Rosington hitting a tree. Drunk. There are actually 3 guitar players in this song. Rosington, Collins and Gaines. Steve Gaines was special.
From here: for a fantastic story song, "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew." For a swinging, high-octane blues boogie, "I Know A Little." For sheer instrumental devastation, "T For Texas," live from Knebworth 1976.
The spookiest thing about that whole situation is the album cover that you just showed the three with the Flames around them where the three that died on the plane crash and that smell was there last hit now that's spooky
Got goosebumps watching you react to that one. That's what I like so much about reactions. Sometimes I can actually feel like I am hearing it for the first time. Yeah, I was blessed to find recovery many years ago, wish I could have brought SO many others that I have lost in my life with me but you know man, we all have our own journey and God-given free will.
Jay Rah, thank you for reacting to my all time favorite band. I can suggest so many of their songs, but I'll limit my recommendation to one, and that is "Call Me The Breeze". Btw, the backup vocalists were Cassie Gaines (she died in the plane crash), JoJo Billingsley and Leslie Hawkins.
That was the original cover of the Street Survivors album that you showed, the band surrounded by flames. The album came out 3 days after the plane crash. The record company freaked out and had to scramble to change the album cover.
* Actually, it was the other way around. The album came out first, the plane crashed 3 days later. It had to be a shocker to the record company; the album predicting the plane crash.
I remember that story about scrambling to get the records off the shelves. I was one of the lucky ones who bought the album before they pulled them off the shelves. So if anybody has that original album cover, I would hang on to it You never know what it'd be worth in the near future
@@sammybeck7794 It's gotta be a definite collector's item. I wonder how many were sold before MCA changed the album cover. The only thing is, for me personally, that's not a rare item that anyone with a conscience would feel good about trying to profit from.
@@sammybeck7794 I have one of them, though not exactly in pristine condition. I doubt that it will be worth much, and I'd sort of hate to profit off of someone's demise, unless it was someone like Adolph Hitler.
This is the first reaction I've seen from you. Very insightful. I was in high school in Jax when the news broke over the radio about the plane crash. Years later I was at a party thrown by a gal whose brother was bass player Leon Wilkeson's accountant. Leon showed up and we ended up burning on and just talking. Nice guy.
Yeah, the whole band had abused drugs and alcohol, but at this time, the band was trying to clean up their act. They all were in their 20s still, some as young as 24. Gary Rossington, for whom the song is written wrecked a car and it caused the band to postpone some tour sates on the STREET SURVIVORS album. The band fined him for this. Ironically, he is the only surviving band member who’s still with the band. The choir you hear are “The Honkettes,” which consisted of JoJo Billingsley, Leslie Hawkins and Cassie Gaines; Cassie was killed, along with her brother, Steve Gaines (one of the THREE guitarists) and of course, the singer, Ronnie Van Zant. Miraculously, most of the band survived the plane crash. Their friend and manager, Dean Kilpatrick died, as well. The drummer, Artimus Pyle ran through the swamps and woods, injured from the crash to get help the night of the crash. Had it not been for him, more could’ve died.
@@ParchmentScroll poor decision on this one. The pilots knew the plane had issues. The guys were getting ready to buy a jet and one of the Honkettes refused to board the plane.
Even the members who survived were BUSTED UP! Bass player Leon Wilkeson may have been injured the worst out of the survivors, he almost died! He "coded" twice on the way to the hospital. He suffered a closed double fracture of his left leg, a severe double compound fracture of his left arm, 6 broken ribs (one of which was an internal compound fracture which punctured his left lung), upper/lower jaw/nose/facial bones extensively smashed and 15 teeth (basically all of his teeth except the molars) knocked out!
WRITTEN for a BAND MEMBER ONE OF THE GUITARIST. WHO AFTER GOT A NEW CAR. WRECKED IT IN CRASH INTO A TREE. After he was hammered...THIS BECAME MY FAVORITE..."GIVE ME 3 STEPS" "SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL"
OMG, this song. Wow! I grew up in L.S. Heaven, Cabin John, MD. Skynyrd were considered GODS where I grew up (along with Molly Hatchet, Doobie Bros, Marshall Tucker, The Outlaws, Little Feat, etc.). I haven't heard this song in a long time and I was just rocking out again, remembering how truly SWEET this song is! It's a perfect combination of Soul, Rock, melody, jams and song-craft. It is one of Rock's greatest tragedies what happened to this band. I know they have re-formed over the years and toured extensively. But the "Street Survivors" album is, I think, their best album.
The album cover showing the band in flames was immediately recalled after the plane crash then later redistributed with the same pic but without the flames. The original release is a serious collector item.
Probably my favorite Skynyrd song. I still got the vinyl record with the original album cover with the flames. ( They changed it after the plane crash. )
I actually lived this life, am recovering, only smoke weed, drinks on the weekends, and occasional mushrooms.. but a lot of other things were on the table in the past.
The song was inspired by the slide guitarist, Gary Rossington, drunk crashed his new car and delayed the tour. Ronnie was pissed. Gary is still alive. Ironically.
Great reaction! If you're gonna do more, do the classic stuff and pick from the live album (One More From the Road) T for Texas will blow you away!!! Tuesday's Gone also one of their best.
"call me the breeze" best driving song ever caution listening to it while driving may result in speeding ticket also " you got that right" and " I know a little" kick butt ✌️♥️ we will make you a fan of um before it's over that's my vision 👊♥️
The female singers were known as the Honkettes, sadly one of them died in the crash. Cassie Gaines along with her brother guitarist Steve Gaines who also died in the crash. This song however it was about either original guitarist Gary or Allen crashing their new car into an oak tree. There is actually a picture of it on the internet somewhere
Amazing song....this was in my top 5 of all time that they did....You should hear this live on the Vicious Cycles tour on dvd from Nashville. To see it is to believe it. Great review by you.
Yes, this was about themselves, inspired by guitarist Gary Rossington he got drunk and high and crashed his bran new car into an oak tree and almost died they had to cancel 6 concerts, and the band fined Rossington $5000.
😎😎😎If you do anything else you have to listen to “Needle and the spoon” and “On the hunt” and “Saturday night special” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, old school Classics with a lot of bass! Trust me on these three you won’t regret it
I don't remember anyone overdosing on quaeludes but I hear that one member had a problem with them and they have caused many wrecks. I've had them damn oak trees get in my way before because of them.
Cautionary tale for sure man. This song actually influenced me not to do anything too terribly stupid in my youth. I mean, I was stupid, sure, but stayed away from needles and spoons. Thanks Skynyrd.
So much guitar firepower in that band...
"Gimme Back My Bullets" by Skynyrd is a jam!!....😀💥💥👌👍
I've drunk enough whiskey to float a battleship around!
The background vocals, the guitars, the perfect timing from everyone in the band. 45 years later, and you won't find a better sound
I just watched your channel for the first time. Insightful comments. Skynyrd wrote and produced songs about real life issues. Enjoy them. I am a subscriber!

It's ironic the song is about Gary Rossington and he is one of few still alive
Thats what I was thinking too. 😔
It was also about Allen Collins. Allen and Gary were both involved in serious car crashes while drunk and on drugs (on the same day).
The best band period.....check out Curtis Lowe from Lynyrd Skynyrd
I think you would like Call Me the Breeze, it has a little different flavor.
Gotta do it live from "Tribute," 1987. Billy Powell's piano solo = 🔥🔥🔥
The balled of Curtis Lowe is a must!! You'll love it.
I've been playing guitar since 1976. Steve Gaines, the guy who plays the lead in the middle of the song, was a master. Pretty much my favorite song from this band.
The entire album is a masterpiece.
Steve Gaines kicks ass!
"Gimme back my bullets" studio version!
Love this song. Thanks for doing this. Skynyrd is a really, REALLY good band. Props. Please check out the beautiful, almost anthemic, "Tuesday's Gone". Soooo sweet on the ears. Enjoy, indeed.

Every guitarist in this band SMOKED.

Yes, "Call Me The Breeze" live 1976, "The Balled Of Curtis Loew" , "Sweet Home Alabama", "Tuesday`s Gone"
It is literally about the band. They were all into some heavy drug and alcohol abuse. Needle and the Spoon live at Winterland 1976 is a must!
From here: for a fantastic story song, "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew." For a swinging, high-octane blues boogie, "I Know A Little." For sheer instrumental devastation, "T For Texas," live from Knebworth 1976.
One of their best bad-ass jams- and they’re tellin it like it is! Love this Song!
The spookiest thing about that whole situation is the album cover that you just showed the three with the Flames around them where the three that died on the plane crash and that smell was there last hit now that's spooky
Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the hottest southern rock bands on the planet in the 70's, they lost members to a plane crash and fans were devastated.
" You Got That Right " or ' I know a little " call me the breeze is one of the best road songs ever ✌️♥️
The Honkettes were three ladies that did the backup singing. Cassie passed in the crash. Jo Jo has gone now too. 😔
Lynyrd Skynyrd- one more time good song.
Got goosebumps watching you react to that one. That's what I like so much about reactions. Sometimes I can actually feel like I am hearing it for the first time. Molly Hatchet- the fall of the peacemakers. That's a awesome southern rock song. Molly Hatchet has some really cool album covers.

Thank you! ;)
Yes. I don't know how lyrics written yesterday ended up copyrighted 1973.
Substances can be fun and useful. They break down a false self quickly and open the soul to light
that is unless they kill you 1st.
imo the best put together Skynyrd song and a powerful message.
Great reaction .. Welcome to the greatest American band in history ..enjoy the ride
Probably my favorite Skynyrd song. I still got the vinyl record with the original album cover with the flames. ( They changed it after the plane crash. )
Try call me the breeze, Gimme three steps, Simple man
I actually lived this life, am recovering, only smoke weed, drinks on the weekends, and occasional mushrooms.. but a lot of other things were on the table in the past.
The Needle and The Spoon is a good one. This is the first band that I ever saw in concert. June 6, 1974. In New Orleans. I was 16 yrs. old.
The piano kills in Mr. Breeze
Just another great reaction, from a simple kind of man. Thanks man.
About Gary Rossington the guitarist it’s a true story all that happened to him and Ronnie wrote it in the hospital when he was in there
The song was inspired by the slide guitarist, Gary Rossington, drunk crashed his new car and delayed the tour. Ronnie was pissed. Gary is still alive. Ironically.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - I never dreamed
You'll love The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe
Best Band hands down! Love Skynyrd! Awesome song!! Try Tuesday's Gone...

Hey Jay! You gotta check out "The Needle and the Spoon."
This is the sound of my childhood. ☺️ Call me the Breeze is a much happier tune. The Ballad of Curtis Loew is my personal favorite.
Pretty much Ronnie Van Zant's anthem to Gary Rossington's dumb a$$ ways. Ironically Gary Rossington is one of the few remaining members.
If you want a wicked bass line check out the band Blackfoot...song ..Train...
What a classic opening line.
