He’s been through SO MUCH garbage with this team. When he somehow re-signed with the team as UFA, he solidified his connection with the fans. We love him because he’s the one guy we feel like has been through all of it like we have been and still remains here. He’s the on-ice embodiment of this tortured fan base sticking around by choice, even after having ZERO reason to for YEARS.

He is to us what Marc-Andre Fleury is to Pens fans. The 1st overall pick from the middle of their moribund stretch that sticks with the team for a long time, and contributes to their eventual playoff success (and unlike MAF, we didn't have to give up Nuge in either expansion draft!)

Just the best. Hyman said I think last season. He plays on the PP, the PK, top line, second or third line centre when you need too, when you’re up a goal holding onto the lead, down a goal looking to tie the game, 6 on 5 or at the end of games facing the 6 on 5. One of the most underrated players ever tbh. He’s literally everything, on and off the ice

Being an 18 year old oilers fan, when I was young Nuge was the first player on the oilers that I started following. I went to my first hockey game in 2013 when I was 8, it was against the Avanlanche and we were down 4-1. Although I was young and was just starting to be aware and learn about hockey, I saw Nuge score his first goal of that season. It was a nice one timer and that goal started a comeback where we won 6-4 against the Avs. After that I was in awe of him, my dad even bought me one of his jerseys after the game. Seeing how Nuge has finally started to get the credit he deserves has made me very happy. Great player that does amazing wherever he’s put, and seeing him be a key factor in this team getting further in the playoffs has been amazing. My favourite player of all time, and I’m excited to see him (hopefully) lift the cup

Oh, and my guy growing up, was Doug Weight. My favourite Oiler ever, personally.
Guy took a team that had no business being anywhere near the playoffs, through two upsets of behemoths in Dallas and Colorado, in 97 and 98.
Cujo was a major factor, but it was Weight's leadership that really pushed that pre-cap, small-market team, and made them do incredible things. Was rough seeing him leave when they simply could not afford to keep him any longer.
It was also the fact that he was on Carolina in '06, along with my infinite respect for Rod the Bod, that softened the pain, of losing to them in G7 that year.
Weight had said in a later interview that he doubted any Edmonton fans cared that he was on that Carolina team. You were wrong, Doug.

I remember being an eight year old kid watching the Canes beat the in ‘06. Back then my favourite Oilers player was 100% Hemskey or Smyth. Ever since Nuge was drafted, it has been him. He is just a rock solid guy, a total team player, always doing work in the community, and he helped push the team through the decade of darkness. I want to see him (and hope Nuge feels the same way) stay as an Oiler and retire as one. I remember some people calling for him to be traded 1 season after he re-signed to surely retire as an Oiler. This guy is untouchable, imo though. Management would be flayed alive by the bulk of the fan base if they traded this guy, without his asking.
Ryan Smyth is obviously a fan favourite, with 1 stain on his legacy. His petty departure from Edmonton. That was on him, not the team. I still think he's deservedly one of the most fan favourite players in the team's history, but if he is with that stain, then what is RNH? A guy who has played there his entire career, through terrible years and all, and sure, got a nice payout in his first contract, but also didn't try and fleece the team when re-signing to stay where he started, and be an Oiler for life.
When his teammates and coaches talk about him touching every facet of the team's game, they aren't just saying words. This guy is easily one of their most valuable players, in ways that don't show up on stats sheets.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, "is" a 1st-overall caliber player. Not every 1st overall goes on to show only tangible results. Any team in the league would take this guy at more money than he's making now, and he's easily one of my favourite players in this franchise's history. Unsung hero to the fullest.
P.S. The fact you couldn't hold back your laugh at 0:57, is hilarious. What a clown. One of the absolute worst busts, ever.

Then we had all our 1st’s that went one way or the other, but it’s just been incredible to see Nuge not just experience - but actively participate in getting us this far. Especially after all those years hearing my folks’ stories about running into Coffey and Gretzky on Jasper ave after cup wins. I started watching hockey in 84, first Oilers Cup, so Messier was my guy. But in the crappier years I became a huge Hemsky fan. The guy was so talented and the only reason to go watch games. Unfortunately for him, he was here in the wrong era. First because you were allowed to destroy elite players which caused him to get badly hurt all the time and secondly he had nobody to play with that could compliment his vision and play style. Could you imagine Hemsky on this current Oilers roster. I guarantee you, he would thrive and be rightfully recognized for how good he was.

Grew up watching them lose to Dallas in the playoffs for what seemed like forever, and even as other top players left for bigger paychecks Smytty stayed here at home. The 2006 playoff run cemented his place in Oiler history, probably his finest moment was returning to Game 3 of the San Jose series after being injured in the second period and setting up Horcoff's game winner in triple overtime (a Pronger clearing attempt had hit him right in the face). It's weird to think of Nuge as the longest serving Oiler but it's been awesome to see him evolve into a top notch two-way player and he's definitely a fan favourite now. My favourite Nuge moment is when he fought Toronto's Justin Holl after Holl had laid a hard hit on Kailer Yamamoto.

Growing up my favourite players were smytty and nuge so it’s nice to see that the pride of Edmonton and true heartbeat of the oilers, barring Sammy G is putting up points during the playoffs where the team will hopefully lift a cup. Crazy what nuge is done considering he’s only 19

Jarome Iginla, Shea Weber and Miikka Kiprusoff are my favourite all time players in each position. All-time favourite is Iginla though. Growing up watching him be the best all around Captain in the league on the Flames was great. My most favourite Iginla moment is his assist to Crosby's Golden Goal in 2010

my guy(s) growing up were Ryan Smyth and Rollie the goalie, goalies have always been my favorite so I try to have a favorite player too but still to this day it's always the goalies for me, I've been rocking my Skinner jersey all year and I can't wait to see him hoist the cup

From 1979 to today and and Nuge has played for half of the coaches in the teams history. He has certainly seemed to be positive and resilient throughout the teams ''decade of darkness'', hopefully there is a bright light for all he has been through

Grant Fuhr was my guy. Enthusiastic, self-depreciating and always about the team. Capable of stunning playoff performances when needed the most and he never quite seem to shrug off the "I can't believe I'm really here" which I loved.

Always a pro. How he conducts himself even in dark times exemplifies a tough mindset. Remember, after the first playoff appearance, there were talks of trading him. He stays focused and secures a long-term contract while still producing on both sides of the ice.

I nearly walked right into RNH on 107th in front of this fancy steakhouse. I had just gotten off work tying rebar at the LRT expansion (Pre New Arena). I was sipping my coffee when I looked up and saw this towering looking dude with a bit of surprise in his eyes. I probably looked like a homeless person. I instantly recognized the young man as the EDM Oilers' 1st RD pick! But I kept it cool and said "Heyy Nuge" giving him the head nod expressing "Not a crazy person, just getting off work and I look like crap person". Ryan Jones was standing right beside him too. It was pretty awesome. Should have been there.

Not an oilers fan per se, but nuge might be the most underrated top end player. 100 points a season ago, constant up and down the lineup, he plays wherever. It’s amazing.
As for favorite player all time, gotta be iginla. I grew up in Detroit, but something about a power forward captain that’s able to put up 50 goal seasons and is an incredible role model on and off the ice is special to me❤️

He’s got a great shot from that area and closer in. Usually that’s his move during shootouts. Not strong when the defense is on him but when he has space for a shot watch out

"My guy" was Tomas Plekanec. Not a fancy player, but he never missed a game. He was not getting any accolades and was not looking for any. He came to the rink, put on his turtle neck, did his job, and went home. That's pretty much how I live my life now, without the turtle neck.

I’ve been a Nuge fan from the very beginning. I knew that a guy who looked 10 years younger than his age and was still a great player, was going to be special and so he was. He soldiered through the dark years never complaining and every coach the Oilers have had, have all marvelled at what a complete hockey player he is. I’m so glad the Nuge is being rewarded for his hard work and patience. No surprise to me that he is a huge fan favourite. His face still looks like a young rookie, except now you can see his moustache is finally starting to show. He’s a keeper 😁👍.
I’ve also been a huge Bouchard fan since he first made the team. I saw he was a special player that just needed time as all great defence men do. His defence play needed time , but his contribution to offence, is a rare talent that only comes along every so often. That kind of player gives your team a special edge, that only a few teams are lucky enough to get.
This city has waited a long, long time for this kind of team. I’m happy for the fans that never gave up. These last few years have made up for the dark ones. It’s exciting to be where we are now.

I think about the Nuge alot he never complained about salary, been with Oil all his career ( I remember him when he was drafted in 2011 thats 13 years ago) he is the type of guy thats like every fan out there he is just a hockey player that plays hockey and never has any bad thing to say about him. As fans we an relate to him thats why fans like him.

Nuge has always been huge in the city. He's a clean kid, unlike Hall who got a bad rap here once he started snorting snow and... well... we don't talk about Yak. Nuge is calm, unbothered, just a really Edmonton attitude. 'The worlds on fire, ok but first, donairs?' kind of calm.
Growing up: Ryan Smyth. Still the #1. Maybe Dougie Weight.
Your Rebels story reminds me that I use to watch Skinner play for the Lethbridge 'Canes. Wild how far that kid has come.
