      Draisaitl also missed a wife open net. Which he typically doesn't miss. It just wasn't the oilers game, despite skinner doing great in net. Hill was standing on his head and one missed snipe from.leon changed the whole game.
      Let the haters hate, it was a great game of hockey. Oilers keeping their opposition to only scoring 2 on skinner will lead to overall success. Oilers score 3 or more goals most games. Letting in 2 every game and scoring more than 2, sounds to me like a recipe for longevity in the season and hopefully translates post season

      so, instead of contraversally firing keefe months ago, you hold out and make the guaranteed move when leafs don't make the playoffs, or lose in the 1st round again. then, nobody is going to be hunting your head for a questionable decision.

      The leafs invested in 4 forwards with minimal heart. Maybe if they were actually power forwards they would carry the team, but instead it's a miracle if they backcheck, they coast to the bench at .2km/hr, and the only time they perform like superstars is when a contract is on the line.
      They need heart. They're missing muscle and fists, and you can't just purchase that willy-nilly (Bertuzzi and Reaves)

I will say that realistically when the league does take travel, strength of conferences, # of games per week, strength of schedule balancing into it. The probability of getting a long stretch of games for multiple teams isn't likely. Simply because it also means they will get a brutal stretch to compensate for the easy one.

      I think something that is lost here is that prior to the 16 game win streak they also had an 8 game win streak. Including the loss to vegas, they’re 24 wins in their last 28 games. Will that come down? Yea for sure. But i question “old habits”. That’s nearly 1,700 minutes of game, plus probably another 3,500 minutes of practice.
      They look like a completely different team - the team everybody expected them to be right out of the gate. If anything - when you look at the second half of last season, and the first half of this season, the brutal start of the 23/24 season looks like the anomaly, and not the norm you seem to be implying.

    • @ulrichsuter3548
      @ulrichsuter3548 3 місяці тому

      @@ryanbaldwin4849 You have a lot of good points here.
      I didn't want to imply that they are as bad as at the very beginning of the season - not at all. But they still have their issues many want to brush under the carpet because of the two super shiny objects they have upfront.
      They were not that bad of a team before they fired their coach, neither did they just learn how to skate, pass, or defend since then. It was always in them. But the same goes for the bad stuff - it is always in them.
      Where I want to go with this is momentum and confidence. It is a powerful sword - when you have it, just as well the absence of it. It then really comes down to what can they deliver on a constant basis (what is their true talent level).
      They massively underachieved before the coaching change, and they did, with quite a margin overachieve since. This is why coaching change bounces wear off.
      Hence, the true level of the Oilers might be somewhere in between the amazing win streak they just put up and the hockey they showed us before the coaching change. Just as well as they are one injury away from struggling again...what if #97 or #29 go down?? The two together are much more powerful than the sum of their individual talents alone.

      @ryanbaldwin4849 3 місяці тому

      @@ulrichsuter3548 yea that’s all fair and i appreciate the discourse.
      I think the oilers are often seen as “just mcjesus and drai”, but as a life long oilers fan they are so much more than that now. Ryan Nugent Hopkins has turned a leaf and has averaged roughly 1ppg over the past 1.5 seasons. Zach Hyman has blossomed into a legit threat with roughly 1ppg as well. You have Bouchard who is just shy of a 1ppg dman. On top of that you have Ekholm, Kane, Nurse, and Now Perry, which makes the team literally tough to play against.
      The team has a lot more depth than they did two years ago, and more than last year. The big question i have, and it has been the same question for 30 years, is goal tending. I know skinner has been closely watched his whole life and he has a lot of respect among players, but so far it hasn’t translated into consistent play (until recently). And then there’s campbell which is just a huge turd of a signing. Frankly, i think the team can stay competitive as much as any team who loses their star player, but if Skinner gets wrecked, or gets overplayed and exhausted, or loses confidence? We are sunk.
      Look at us, having decent conversation on UA-cam of all places.

    Great video, and you`re one of the few guys out there that understands the combination of defense and goaltending. People still think it was goalies that let the Oilers down to start the season. In fact it was bad team defense paired with subpar goalies. The gaps, space and absence of any pressure have been a feast for other teams forwards during that 18 games.
    The Oilers, i`m not sure about them. 16 W is impressive. But the schedule was soft and the first proper opponent did bring down the streak.
    How good is their middle 6 and their D really? How good is their goaltending at all? They are running Skinner + Pickard, which is by no means a great tandem in the league.
    They could use a 2nd line RW, a 3rd line Center, a top pair RD, a veteran backup. Good luck without cap space to figure that out.
    Right now, if i look at Florida, NYR, Bruins, Nucks, Jets, Avs, even Vegas when healthy, they seem to have more pieces in place.
    Look at the Avs, add a goalie and some depth, and that`s a cup winning team.

I hate to say that the All-Star Circus probably ruined their momentum (wouldn't be surprised if McDavid makes that point too), but there's one thing that's getting overlooked here when it comes to this particular record. The 92-93 Pens that set the 17 wins in a row during the regular season did this without a shootout match or any ties. If this Oilers team was given the same circumstances as the record holders did, the Oilers would have ended their streak some time ago.

    The only thing that keeps me from jumping through UA-cam and strangling for using the word "failure" in reference to just about anything involving McDavid, is that you had the forethought to use "quotes" the irony of the title almost killed me. More to the point, my lack of initial notice of the irony is what almost killed me. Billy Beane said it in "Moneyball"..."I hate losing. I hate NOT WINNING even more!" (or something like that) McDavid's reaction to the loss is great. almost feel bad for their next opponent.

    Adin Hill is an elite goalie. His GSAA -- which is a cumulative stat, by the way, it doesn't pro-rate to 60:00 minutes like GAA -- is more than Demko's IN HALF AS MANY STARTS! His save percentage is 39% better than the league average. His goals allowed average (opponents' S% normalized so that 100 is average and 99 is 1% better than 100) in Vegas's cup run would have been top-3 in the league had it played out over the whole season. I hear everyone coming out with their mock Olympic rosters, and quite frankly, Adin Hill WILL be the starter for Canada (barring injury). Hell if the Olympics were tomorrow, he'd be my pick.

    Excellent breakdown of the factors that spurned a very dramatic turnaround for Edmonton this season. Vegas is a very strong team, and they’re tough to beat at home.
    I still think the truth lies somewhere in-between the pathetic early-season Oilers and the superb recent version of Oil - they’re not a laughingstock, but they’re not a juggernaut, either.
    Still, in a very (overall) weak Pacific division, Edmonton is back on track for (what should’ve been all along, this season) a relatively safe/easy playoff appearance. I don’t think we can say with certainty that this newfound focus on defense in Edmonton is real (or not) until we see them in the playoffs.

    • @almuthebebrand7487
      @almuthebebrand7487 3 місяці тому

      The so called " still overall very weak Pacific division" has the Vancouver Canucks currently ranked 1st in the league, the VGK ranked 7th in the league, the Oilers ranked 11th in the league (by points although they have played very few games), the Kings ranked 15th in the league (have fallen off lately) so nothing easy there to get into the playoffs with the Flames and Kraken still in the mix...

    • @BahamutBreaker
      @BahamutBreaker 3 місяці тому

      @@almuthebebrand7487 When a division is *overall* very weak, that does not imply that the division is completely devoid of quality teams. It implies that *on average* the division is weaker than the other divisions. The presence of both Anaheim and San Jose in the same division sinks the average quality of the Pacific division teams well below the other divisions. The other six teams in the Pacific, this season, have combined to score 100 goals, and only allowed 46 goals during 23 games versus Anaheim & San Jose. In other words, the other six Pacific teams essentially get 7 “free” wins this season, just by existing in the Pacific. Teams in the other three divisions do not enjoy that luxury.

    in those 16 games, the oilers faced such paper thin oponents that it should be it's own analysis. beating only 4 teams above .500, LA mid implosion, the flyers who are an anomaly, the leafs who constantly beat themselves and the rangers; that one was legit, huge win. then you have the sharks, cbj, ducks, hawks, habs and sens at the top of my head. winning 16 straight is hard enough, but you gotta look at the opposition. the streak was never sustainable. the oilers home stretch is even harsher and could prove to bite them for playtoff standings
