- Ken Griffey Jr., AKA “the Kid,” is one of the all time greats. Arguably the sweetest swing this game has ever seen, he made hitting the ball out of the stadium look effortless. But Griffey Jr. didn’t just hit, he was a true 5 tool player. His speed was most apparent when in center field, where he showcased incredible range in route to winning 10 gold gloves only 2 behind The Say Hey Kid, Willie Mays. Griffey Jr. was a titan of the Home Run Derby festivities, winning a record 3 derby crowns, and did something that has never been done before or since. But more importantly, The Kid was an electrifying player that rose to the top with his charisma and all time great talent.

@@johnb6546 it was everything my dude… the athleticism. The backwards hat. He was just such a cool guy on a really fun team. Add in that batting stance (the smoothest swing and the coolest swing wiggly stance) and all the home runs, stolen bases, and the home runs he robbed in center field, and it’s no wonder he was a legend. Plus he was a guy who actually didn’t steroid up. That in itself is crazy for the 90’s. I never got to see him live. It’s one of my biggest sports regrets.

@@johnb6546 he’s the reason I played organized baseball as a kid. Little league and Pony league. Everyone tried to copy his batting stance. At the time, none of us realized that that stance requires incredible bat speed that none of us possessed. Lol. We were late on basically every swing.

I grew up going to Mariners games. It was rough not seeing them ever win the big one, but also a pleasure to watch those iconic players.
It’s also so odd that they have the record for most wins in a season but it was without Ken, Alex and randy
Griffey Jr. made baseball cool again. After he made it big, everyone wore their baseball hats backwards. Probably the most pure swing on a batter you will ever see. It's fast, it's powerful, and it looks completely effortless.
If he stays healthy you gotta imagine he has 700 HRs by the end of his career. What an amazing player and even though I never was able to watch him I love the guy to death for what he did for the Mariners.
He also played his home games in tougher homerun parks.

He’s the goat. He’s the greatest baseball player to ever step on the diamond. If he NEVER got plagued with career dampening injuries at age 30-he’d literally be the only player in history with 800 home runs right now. Without debate. No way he shouldn’t have won MVP in 96 and 99 too.
Griff is my all-time favorite player! Weirdly enough, I think his impact on the game and his run of dominance both on offense and defense in the 90's are severely underrated. Especially considering he's the only guy during peak "steroid era" that was never even suspected of cheating the game. Overall, he truly is a credit to baseball and humanity as a whole.

Every time I see a new Griffey video it makes me understand how great he was. A stellar career and stayed clean the entire time. A good ambassador for the game and so likable towards the fans.
I wish MLB would have him around the game more as well as others like him if they were willing. Show this generation how great the game was and still is.

I was 11 when he came into the league. My number was 24, my hat was backward, the griffys shoes were awesome and that swing was so sweet. Still my absolute favorite player in any sport!
I don’t believe there will be another MLB baseball player like Griffey Jr. He was a natural talent and a true prodigy. What could have happened if he had less injuries. I’m sure glad he made it into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. You go (KID!!!)

No one before, and no one since as of this writing, played center field more electric than Ken Griffey Jr. His athleticism was off the chart in the 90s.
As a lifelong Cub fan, Gruffey Junior was the only baseball player that tempted me to be a Mariner fan in the 1990s and early 2000s. His swing was the sweetest. And I could watch his defense highlights all day. And his bombs in the Home Run Derby was insane. Hitting the Warehouse at Camdem Yards in Baltimore is insane! And his father Griffey Sr was amazing too. In 8th grade, my classmates and teacher tool us on a field trip to a Cubs game vs Reds in Griffeys first year for the Reds. He and Sammy Sosa homered that day so I got to see my two favorite baseball players hit homeruns. The Reds won that day but I was happy just being at Wrigley Field and watching Junior and Sosa!!!!
I saw him play against the Pirates in Pittsburgh in 2000, the last year of Three Rivers Stadium.
My dad and I used to go to Wrigley to see Ernie Banks play and watch the Cubs get beat...which happened a lot in those days...we would also go to Comiskey to see what new craziness would happen there. I'll never forget the year we went to Wrigley to watch the Miracle Mets end the Cubs' playoff hopes...what a series. Got to watch Seaver pitch, Agee hit, and hard nosed baseball played the old fashioned way.

I, like many idolized and loved Griffey Jr while growing up in the 90s. I’m sure he inspired many in America to play and love baseball.
Nobody had a bigger impact on baseball around the world than Jr. He and Jordan were easily the most popular athletes in America.

There will will never be another Jr!! He was so smooth as a player, from his swing to his fielding. And how about that swing! Unlike anything in baseball history!! So effortless and yet exact! One sweet stroke and the ball would fly, fly away! Thank you Dave Niehaus for the play call! The memories...I miss them. Thank you Jr for not only the player that you were but for the man that you are! You're the best, thank you!!

The HR Derby at Camden Yards is still the greatest memory for me. I was on Eutaw Street when Jr hit the warehouse, the ball flew over my head and it was madness. A poor beer vendor who was trying to get home run balls all afternoon was the one to grab it. Then a few hours later, ran into Bill Murray as he was leaving the ballpark and he talked to me and my uncle for 15 mins like they were old friends meanwhile I got an autograph and yelled I loved you in ghostbusters. Great times

I grew up going to Mariners games and watching Griffey was so awesome. Even though the Mariners never did much in the playoffs, it was so much fun watching Griffey, Edgar, Randy, A-rod, Ichiro, etc. And '95 was just magical. It was a fun time to be an 8 year old playing baseball and collecting cards when Griffey was a rookie.
Griffey and Mantle were the two most talented players ever. Too bad the injuries took some much away from what they both could have been. Jr was simply amazing

Being able to grow up watching him in his prime, along with Randy Johnson, Jay Buhner, Omar Vizquel, Edgar fucking Martinez etc was absolutely the greatest core memories a kid could have. I remember watching Griffey Jr. the most though at the Kingdome. He was always hitting homers and making freak catches. Unreal talent

The Mariners did bring the Turn Ahead the Clock uniforms back in 2018 for a game against the Royals. Also of note, Griffey helped design the colors and logo of these uniforms as well.

I am lucky enough to have lived in Washington during the griffey years. Although I didn't have season tickets, I did see as many games in the kingdome as I could. Griff was and still is my favorite player followed closely by Frank Thomas. Griff wasn't just a great player, he was the Mariners at the time. If I look close enough there may still be beer stains on the ceiling when Edgar hit that double and scored Griff in 95' to beat the yanks.
I had the pleasure of living in Seattle while Jr played there and there was so many happy memories. My favorite was the Spiderman catch in right center field as I was at the Kingdome when it happened and it blew my mind when I saw it happening in real time.
There will never be another Kid.

Agreed, I always think Big Jim is underrated (maybe that’s the wrong word, maybe “overlooked” or as you put it “least talked about” would be better). I still think he should’ve placed much higher than 7th in the ‘02 AL MVP 😂.

One of my favorite athletes. Far and away my favorite baseball player of all time. It was a real treat growing up in the Seattle area and getting to see him play as much as I did. And what was most fun about watching him is how much he had playing, joking with teammates, and even having fun with us fans. He was always a kid at heart. And what too rarely gets mentioned is the fact that of all the players of his generation worth comparison, he was the only one without any connection to performance enhancing drugs.
Greatest of all time. Played for the love of the game and missed games for literally sacrificing his body for his team. The sweetest swing and a human highlight reel.
Hands down my favorite player. I collected all his memorabilia.
Ken Griffey, Jr. is the best baseball player I’ve ever seen. It’s almost impossible to compare him to anybody in his era, or maybe any other. I’ve been watching baseball since the 1960’s.
I love learning he started wearing 42 to honor Robinson, I can't wait to pass that knowledge on to others now, thank you.
They did do the “turn ahead the clock” jerseys again a few years back. They even played against the royals again like the original game. They were selling those jerseys at safeco for like $300 a piece
The only problem withe The Kid is he played himself into shape during spring training. And when he hit his 30s that didn’t work anymore, and he refused to change. He started piling up injuries and his bat speed slowed down. And yet he was still one of the all-time greats.
As a fan it’s hard to think about how much he left on the table, since his prime was so high and given his skillset his downhill slope shouldn’t have been so steep.
I seriously wonder if that would've changed his injuries. A lot of the time he could only be great, not just okay, you don't have to run straight into the wall in an April game and break your hand. With all those injuries at his younger age, could the preparedness have saved his body from the wear and tear that would continue? I don't know but it would be beautiful to see how it turned out.

I miss watching him play so much! I was about 11 years old on his rookie year and man did he make Baseball Exciting! I’ve always been a Yankees fan and Always Will Be But Who Couldn’t Love And Want To See Him Play Baseball ⚾️!!!! Mariners fan since I can remember. I was 10 during the 1995 seasons, when Junior left for Cincy, I was a broken teenager.
Had Griffey been an Iron Man of a specimen and missed very few games - there is NO DOUBT who would own the all-time HR record. The fact that he was often injured and missed so many games and YET STILL put up those career numbers is insane. Biggest mistake was going to Cincinatti.
You just knew when he came up he was the deal and you were already watching an all-time great. Him and Frank Thomas, you just knew.
I watched every game I could live and recorded most. I love watching Ken Griffey Jr. I had to educate people who he was. I'm from England and fell in love with baseball, it was probably what kept me out of them streets.👏🏾👏🏾

I grew up in Gig Harbor in the 90s. My first baseball game my Dad took me across the narrows bridge to the King Dome in 95. Griffey hit a walk off home run wearing their aqua colored home uniforms. One of the best memories of my life. Ill never forget listening to Dave Neihouse call the games in the 90s on my Grandmas porch. Thanks for everything Griffey.
My favorite player ever. I was a 10 yr old little league player in 93 as he was becoming the man. I wore 24 for yrs because of him. He was just as good of person as player. Pushed mark and Sammy while not having the same leaded fuel they were running on!! Griffey fan for life. Also, he deserved more mvps, so many guys barely beat him being just offensive players. He was great all around. I think he should have won over frank thomas 1 yr and there was another or 2

It's crazy, now in my late 30's, how younger fans will only have stories of how truly gifted Griffey Jr. was early in his career. I had the pleasure of watching him play during a time in which baseball was my life. And as a lifelong Reds fan, I couldn't believe that I was going to get to watch him play for MY team. The rest of his career wasn't as electric, but he will still go down as one of the true GOATs of the game. Also, I'm kinda surprised the Back 2 Back shots with his dad isn't more well known. It's hard to even imagine what it must have been like for them. I miss how the game was then, how it made me feel, ya know?

It's hard to say how cool it is to even have videos like this to watch. As a fan I mean. But great job on this, and all your videos man! You've done a very good job. I know I'm not the only one out there who can say that I really appreciate your hard work.

I've always acted older than I was so in a way you're not wrong in feeling like I should be older than I am.😅 Baseball is something I talk about nonstop, I live and breathe it. The game has so many great players and legends to honor. I'm incredibly grateful for this series because I get to learn and gain respect for players I never had the chance to watch. Their careers, and more importantly, their lives deserve to be celebrated!
Growing up every kid wanted to swing like the kid...legendary..im from Baltimore and remember when he hit the warehouse it was all over Baltimore news channels back then

Growing up as a baseball lover in 90's Seattle was amazing. The Kid, Tino & Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner, Randy Johnson, Jamie Moyer, (we don't talk about A-Fraud), Dan Wilson, Mike Blowers, Joey Cora, Lou Pinella, commentated by the legend Dave Niehaus (Rick Rizzs deserves a shout too)... Even the commercials were good most of the time. For awhile their slogan was "You gotta love these guys," and you really did. So much fun to watch, and it was never really the same after the 90's ended.

Everyone should be able experience what we did in '95. The Kid was out for awhile and we thought it was over. He comes back and BOOM they went on a tear. It was so frickin exciting that I can't even describe it. I think they were behind like 10 or 11 games in early August and then came all the way back to tie Texas in the last game of the season. Of course they won the extra head-to-head and then the series against the Yankees was epic.
Yeah I love the family first attitude. On top of being a great player. Watched his dad play with the Big Red Machine in the 70’s. He quickly became a favorite of mine. And I had “Ken Griffey Jr’s Baseball” on NES. I used to kill it!!!! Cool thing is I was in Cincinnati watching Reds/Padres and I caught his 590th homer off Will Ledesma of the Padres.

He was the Michael Jordon of Baseball in the 90's. Had he stayed injury free, he would have broken all the records. He played so rough in the field he got hurt a lot, but he was special. Too good to put in the DH slot, but in retrospect maybe they should have put him there. Imagine how many homeruns he would have had.
