In 1950, Toronto had a small wooden airport terminal. You could pay a dime to go to the rooftop and watch the North Stars take off. The piston engines were very noisy but it was a treat for us to see the planes. By 1958, a new terminal and turboprops changed everything.

Intriging! What airport could this be? An airport where Eastern Airlines would have its own maintenance falcilities and where National would fly. In 1955, the TCA US routes from and to Canada consisted of Boston - New York - Cleaveland - Tampa and, in the west, Seattle. So, I figure, it's got to be Tampa.

Canadair Northstar DC-4M- The M must stand for Merlin. These planes had Rolls Merlin engines. Since they are V engines, the exhaust comes out of both sides of the engine as opposed to at the bottom like round engines. I understand the seats directly next to the exhaust were almost unusable because of the noise, The Merlin was a beautiful engine, though..

Those were the days my friend. Unfortunately they did come to an end... and I am nearly 64! Sod it.

I miss the sound of those rotary engines spooling up, roaring past as the airplanes performed their takeoff rolls, then trailing off during climbout. As a boy, I loved seeing and hearing aircraft ops at SDF.

Yeah, but what about the Merlins on the Canadair? Ever heard those? And four of them at once? There is some noise.

Most people see famous airliners. I see a snapshot of America and Canada during the Thirty Glorious Years period after WW2. Those folks had NO IDEA of how far we'd fall to our current dysfunctional state. Even worse, millions and millions of Sheeple think that everything is just fine right now.
The masses have no mind at all. Big Brother told them that life was hard and unfair back then. BB says that we are blessed with Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity, and the mindless Sheeple believe it.

TPA maybe? Only place that TCA/NA/EA cross, and it's not NYC or BOS for sure.

Possibly a very early version of PHL, because of the Eastern facilities, and at 00:19, that sure as heck reminds me of the pre-1961 tower at PHL; at 00:22, far right of the image - there was a diner on PA-Rte 291, near the entrance to PHL, until 1968, when it was moved to make way for exits to, and from I-95. National had a sufficient presence at PHL, from the end of the war, until '78 thru '81, when the Pan Am acquisition began, and completed. (most of the PHL "MIA" -bound departures were either National, or Eastern, until Air Florida, under deregulation, began beating everyone up with their 737's and "$169.00 round trip airfare to/from Miami") Wish that my father was still here, he'd know....
