Loved the reaction. For more Spiritbox and Courtney I would say "Rule of Nines" one take vocal is a must. Another example where you can clearly see her close up technique. The other band to give your expert opinion on is Jinjer. The live session of Pisces will also give a great chance to see Tatiana's close up technique.

Hello Singeo ladies! You didn't play the end of the Circle With Me live performance video and she did some very cool mixed clean/harsh vocals in the last chorus! If you liked and/or were intrigued by Courtney's vocals, I highly recommend checking out the song Pisces (live in the studio video) by the Ukrainian metalcore band Jinjer. Metal head here. I can't scream, but i've been trying to figure it out for 6 years, and have a basic understanding of what she's doing. The lows we call False Chord Screaming. you relax your true fold enough that they don't activate at all, and the sound is produced completely by your false chords (hence the name). The higher screams are Fry Screams. it's a combination of a clean note for projection, and fry for the distortion. It's such an strange way to use your voice that its INCREDIBLY difficult thing to learn. Like I said, after 6 years I still can't do it properly
Hey guys! Nice reaction, though I will say that the end of the Circle With Me One-Take is fantastic, and I hope you guys watched it off camera. Courtney does mostly false-fold growling. Her true vocal cords are not involved in any way most of the time she’s using distortion. That ability to flip between growls and cleans is how you know she’s doing it correctly and healthily. What she’s doing is passing air (a lot of it-more than with cleans) over the false folds and essentially allowing them to rattle around. She hits different pitch centers by manipulating her resonance cavities-elongating her neck, tilting her head down, raising or lifting the soft palette, and changing the shape and openness of her mouth. Hope that helps for a bit of explanation until you can (maybe, hopefully) talk to Courtney! 😊

I'm not gonna lie, after listening to alot of Metal Vocalist and being able to scream for years now, the switching from Distortion and Singing is actually very very easy and most Metal Vocalists can do it. Really interesting to see what's difficult from singers of other genres!
It's not "very very easy" especially not as fast, controlled, and consistently as Courtney does it. After years of practice it can be done, but it's not "easy."
@@cloudoftime I'm not trying to downplay Courtney's vocal talent and singing, but I'm serious when I say it's super easy when you use one of the most common screaming techniques like Courtney and most other bands. It shares the same vocal chords as your singing/speaking voice. You can even do it too after only weeks of practice. I've done it when my band needed a 2nd harsh vocals after only a week or so of practice. Both Fry Screaming and False Chord screaming can do this. It seems like most people are impressed by this because maybe Spiritbox is the only metal band they listen to because bands from decades ago have been using this type of screaming/singing back and forth for years now. Bands include but not limited to; Memphis May Fire (Matty uses this ALOT, listen to Vices by them) The Word Alive As I Lay Dying Novelists FR (The singer here also uses this alot) Veil Of Maya It's more of a style really. Cause pretty much most metal vocalists can do it, but it may sound rather whiney (which is the case with Novelists. Some songs are just a bit annoying to listen to.) Basically, if in your screams you can hear a bit of your singing/speaking voice coming through, then you can easily switch it back and forth. Unless you're using a scream that activates your burping vocal chords like Tatiana from Jinjer.
@@PotatoWagon Many people are impressed because they are unfamiliar with it. That said, you're just wrong with the description generally. It's not "very very easy" to have that kind of control for most people. "Very very easy" is not an accurate way to explain it. "Very very easy" would mean that anyone could do it immediately. This is not the case. And I don't need examples. I've been listening to, and performing metal vocals since 2000. And I think you mean false chords.
@@PotatoWagon Did you even read my comment? You're apparently just here to listen to yourself. I have been performing metal vocals since 2000. That's 23 years. I know what it takes for various different people, not just myself. Calling it "very very easy" generally is just not an accurate way to describe it. Not at Courtney's level of control and consistency like I said. But you obviously aren't here to actually read what I say and engage with it substantively.

Hm... Any other songs? In this s similar genres? OK Spiritbox - Rule of Nines** (live sing-thru) YT file = vVDXTFeGYwc Jinjer - Pisces (whole band playthru) YT file = SQNtGoM3FVU Jinjer - Perrenial (live Wakken - 2019) YT file = bxi3i9wzQBk Jinjer - Vortex (official video... shows some incredible versatility) YT file = AiaOSGZTwtY Jinjer - I Speak Astronomy YT file = KJoPIgg17U4 Nightwish - Yours is an Empty Hope (Floor does all the growls in this one) YT file = vyLsU7Q333k There's man, many more...but that's a decent start. ** Very important... you may or may NOT want to fully understand what the Rule of Nine is. As it involves triage/prognosis for severe burn victims. btw, I can speak briefly to the relatively safety of harsh vocals. (I'm a private practice DMD who spent my first three years in a faculty position at a dental school in charge of medically compromised patients, including head/neck/throat reconstruction/trauma-patients)....basically, if done properly, it is no more dangerous than any other form of vocalization...since (with the exception of vocal fry utilizing partial closure of the true vocal folds) these sounds are produced by false folds, the root of the tongue, tissues of the posterior nasopharynx, etc...the true folds are not involved. There is a slowly growing body of scientific knowledge surrounding harsh vocals. You might want to watch a video in which Will Ramos (of the band Lorna Shore) has a laryngoscope video'd in the clinic of Dr's Ingo Titze and Amanda Stark, to investigate HOW Will makes some of the sounds he does. Hosted by Elizabeth Zarhoff (opera soprano/Charismatic Voice on YT), this is a must-see for ANY vocal coaches and those interested in vocal production, speech pathology, speech therapy, etc. The YT of Will is = Ua8SuWNPrLE?t=1450

As a metal vocalist, you can get that low end sound simply by altering your mouth shape, you'll notice when she's doing the mid range scream her mouth is much more open but when she takes it lower is much more closed and her chin tucks in. There are a range of sounds you can achieve just through minor alterations, the technique in your throat remains the same but by adjusting your mouth shape and tongue position you can drastically alter the sound that comes out, this same principle works with both a fry based scream (which Courtney is using here) and a false fold scream.
@@ASMRyouVEGANyet Not really in the same way, no. To alter pitch when you're singing there is a lot more change in what is happening in your throat. Like sing a note with an open mouth and you get an "aaa" sound, close it up and it becomes more of an "ooo" sound it's only really a vowel sound that is changing not the overall sound of the voice, in the way a metal vocal would.
Vocal fry was used sparingly during the 5th century in Gregorian chants. The purpose of the vocal fry or slack was to give the illusion of the bass voices sounding an octave lower.
In answer to basically all of your questions: A microphone. Harsh vocals are quiet (for the most part), think electric guitar vs acoustic. The reason we don't destroy our voice is because it is not a belt, chest or even head voice. It is almost always like this: True chords relaxed (open like regular breathing), false chordes resonating (slower resonance), upper glottis / back of tounge - higher resonance -but controlling airflow (normally very restricted for pitch control, filling the role of the true chordes). For the most part it is a lot of pressure, very little flow. The trick is learning to remove the true folds from the equation; because they are easily damaged at high pressure. That said there are some harsh vocalists who can really shake thier false chords at very high flow.... and they sound really loud like bears! The skill comes in fine tuning the flip between the pitch and volume of your clean vocals and matching this / flowing it into your harsh vocals. There are a lot of really good examples of people who have mastered this.. Loads of singers from metal core bands, early hardcore bands.... but even back to the late 80's in glam metal bands like Skid row. For me Sebastian Bach was the one of the true pioneers of harsh / mixed voice.
If you want to see a really cool video, check out The Charismatic Voice's channel and watch the video she did with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore. She took him to get a camera down his throat and you can see what's happening with his vocal folds and everything else while he does different harsh vocal techniques

The Charismatic Voice channel got together with Will Ramos, lead singer and screamer of Lorna Shore, to create comprehensive warm-ups and exercises aimed at folks who want to learn to scream without getting hurt. Solid, and proper technique is taught and explained. Courtney is amazing!
I would appreciate a reaction to the complete song I was so excited to see a different perspective on vocal breakdown, I feel let down on the length and overall time on the actual songs themselves
Monuments is another band with an incredible skilled vocalist in this genre. Andy Cizek is their vocalist. Makeshift Harmony is spectacular. Anything from the In Stasis album!

also other commenters have mentioned tatiana of jinjer and if i'm going to be real, she's the best female metal vocalist. there is nobody who's close and that's recognizing how much of an absolute badass Courtney is.
My first recommendation would be to finish Circle With Me. I'm sure you had your reasons, so no hate here-Don't want to wrongly give the impression that their fans are jerks. But just to let you know, that was physically painful for many of us lol!
Courtney is a legend. I know everyone goes straight to Jinjer my mind went there too. You can also check out the bands Vexed and Monochromatic Black as well.
Heeeeyyy metal vocalist here. A lot of the pitch between the distortion is caused by face head shape. You see her drop her jaw and O her mouth to create more space and resonance in the apparatus, which drops it into a low.
It's most impressive from someone capable of contrasting great harshes, frying or growls, with astounding powerful and/or distinctive cleans. Courtney's great that way, Tatiana from Jinjer is very impressive, Devin Townsend and Bjorn Strid of Soilwork are some of the very best among guys. Enjoy the discovery!
The best part is the fact she's not the only one or even the first one. Jinjer Arch Enemy Infected Rain Butcher Babies Otep Seas On the Moon . . . and even more!
So I want to hear your thoughts on two songs. This lead vocalist was not vocally trained at all and I am in awe of his talent. The songs are by Falling In Reverse titled Zombified and then I’m Not a Vampire Revamped.
You should see more of female fronted bands with that kind of voice! Some Mentions: Arch Enemy - Deceiver, Deceiver The Agonist - Days before the World wept Jinjer - Who is Gonna be the One? / Vortex Monochromatic Black - Wall of Dissonance Once Human - Scar Weaver VEXED - Hideous Ankor - Prisoner Nervosa - Guided by Evil Infected Rain - The Realm of Chaos
My all time favorite voice like this is Randy Blythe of Lamb of God. Okay, no, that's not right or fair. Courtney LaPlante is on a level all her own. She is absolutely incredible. The way she can switch word to word from growling to singing is so unique. I've never heard anything like it. She is so awesome. What I meant to say is that my all time favorite voice that's _nothing_ like this, except that he has a mean gutteral growl, is Randy Blythe, singer for Lamb of God. I'm also a huge fan of him as a lyricist. I think he writes some of the coolest lines in metal. So maybe that biases my opinion of his voice a little? There's an interesting question. If anyone else were singing his lines or if he were singing someone else's lines, would his voice still sound as good to me? Does a singer who is also a songwriter sound better to the ear if their lyrics resonate with the listener?
This is new to you? Well, try out "Rule of Nines" (there`s also a vocal one-take version) or "Blessed be" - actually you can choose about every of their songs and never get a bad one... And - well, you should check out the Ukrainian band Jinjer: Best entry into the rabbit hole would surely be "Pisces" (live session) or Tatiana`s vocal one-take of "Judgement and Punishment" 😊🤘 Ah, and don`t forget some other really good female singers in that genre: Of course Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy with "Handshake with Hell" or "Reason to believe", two of the very rare songs where she does not only growl, then there is a faszinating band, also from Ukraine, Velja, with "Rigor Mortis" or with (🙄) "A Suite for an ugly Trombone" (hope I got it right...), and then there is another great singer from that corner of the world, Moldova, with her band Infected Rain "Earth Mantra" for example or with Seas on the Moon`s "Sanctuary" or "Bad Omens": Lena Scissorhands... Well, try it out it might be worth it! 😁🤘

Thank you for watching and congratulation 🎊you have been selected among my shortlisted winners....

Bands include but not limited to;
Memphis May Fire (Matty uses this ALOT, listen to Vices by them)
The Word Alive
As I Lay Dying
Novelists FR (The singer here also uses this alot)
Veil Of Maya
It's more of a style really. Cause pretty much most metal vocalists can do it, but it may sound rather whiney (which is the case with Novelists. Some songs are just a bit annoying to listen to.)
Basically, if in your screams you can hear a bit of your singing/speaking voice coming through, then you can easily switch it back and forth.
@@cloudoftime It IS very very easy. But I'm not here to argue. You just gotta try it out yourself and then you'll know.
Tatiana from jinjer next please..

Hm... Any other songs? In this s similar genres?
OK
Spiritbox - Rule of Nines** (live sing-thru) YT file = vVDXTFeGYwc
Jinjer - Pisces (whole band playthru) YT file = SQNtGoM3FVU
Jinjer - Perrenial (live Wakken - 2019) YT file = bxi3i9wzQBk
Jinjer - Vortex (official video... shows some incredible versatility) YT file = AiaOSGZTwtY
Jinjer - I Speak Astronomy YT file = KJoPIgg17U4
Nightwish - Yours is an Empty Hope (Floor does all the growls in this one) YT file = vyLsU7Q333k
There's man, many more...but that's a decent start.
Jinjer - Pisces

As a metal vocalist, you can get that low end sound simply by altering your mouth shape, you'll notice when she's doing the mid range scream her mouth is much more open but when she takes it lower is much more closed and her chin tucks in. There are a range of sounds you can achieve just through minor alterations, the technique in your throat remains the same but by adjusting your mouth shape and tongue position you can drastically alter the sound that comes out, this same principle works with both a fry based scream (which Courtney is using here) and a false fold scream.
Thos isn't just a metal thing. You can do this with any vocal style.
Love seeing people get into extended vocal technique. For more female growlers: Jinjer, Arch Enemy, Abnormality, Konvent… just to make a few…
I second this!!!
You ladies should check out Jinjer. You won't regret it.
Nooooo, the ending is the best moment to listen/react to! Bummed you skipped it. Also, check out Unleash the Archers!

Great reaction! Concur with others on Rule of Nines one take. I would also add Rotoscope, offical music video. Concur with others on Jinjer and Pisces. I would also add Alissa White Gluz from Arch Enemy. She mostly sings in harsh vocals but has a beautiful clean voice as well and occasionally uses both in a song. One of my favorites is Handshake with Hell or her collaboration with Nita Strauss The Wolf you Feed.

We need them to watch will ramos 💀
Definitely check out the other Spiritbox one takes.
This one is fantastic, but it was shot after they finished a large tour. So this video is very indicative of what she sounds like on tour.
I would love to see you maybe do a comparison of her voice being road worn in vs a fresher live take

Definitely need to check out the band Jinjer now! Tatiana is just as amazing a vocalist as Courtney
You need to get on that Will Ramos, Lorna Shore, vocal ting. He does some strange stuff
Gotta react to will Ramos one take vocals
you’ve got to try jinjer now 😃
WHY DID YOU CUT OFF THE END 😭. The end of the “Circle With Me” live take is THE BEST PART 😭!
Oh the best part of the video and her vocals is the end of the song when she switches so seamlessly. Kind of disappointed you didn't show the reaction/breakdown of that
Oop. Definitely missed the best part of this one take at the end.

also other commenters have mentioned tatiana of jinjer and if i'm going to be real, she's the best female metal vocalist. there is nobody who's close and that's recognizing how much of an absolute badass Courtney is.
My first recommendation would be to finish Circle With Me. I'm sure you had your reasons, so no hate here-Don't want to wrongly give the impression that their fans are jerks. But just to let you know, that was physically painful for many of us lol!
I love the ignorance in the proper ‘knowers’. Welcome to music. Finally.
Tallah - Shaken not stired combines a lot of cool techniques together as well.
It's called false chord screaming. When you scream correctly, it makes it easier to switch between the heavy vocals and the cleans.
This is awesome
It's most impressive from someone capable of contrasting great harshes, frying or growls, with astounding powerful and/or distinctive cleans. Courtney's great that way, Tatiana from Jinjer is very impressive, Devin Townsend and Bjorn Strid of Soilwork are some of the very best among guys. Enjoy the discovery!
Pls react to more of them they have a bunch of really good music
This was outstanding! You should seriously cover Dark by October Ends. The vocals in it are insane!
The best part is the fact she's not the only one or even the first one.
Jinjer
Arch Enemy
Infected Rain
Butcher Babies
Otep
Seas On the Moon
. . . and even more!
So I want to hear your thoughts on two songs. This lead vocalist was not vocally trained at all and I am in awe of his talent. The songs are by Falling In Reverse titled Zombified and then I’m Not a Vampire Revamped.
You should see more of female fronted bands with that kind of voice!
Some Mentions:
Arch Enemy - Deceiver, Deceiver
The Agonist - Days before the World wept
Jinjer - Who is Gonna be the One? / Vortex
Monochromatic Black - Wall of Dissonance
Once Human - Scar Weaver
VEXED - Hideous
Ankor - Prisoner
Nervosa - Guided by Evil
Infected Rain - The Realm of Chaos
If you haven't seen the laryngoscopy of will Ramos, y'all would really enjoy that. It was done with the charismatic voice
Why didn’t you finish circle with me??? The end is amazing
You ladies should really check out the acoustic version of constance by them , her voice is beautiful in it
Lorna shore- to the hellfire one take vocal. No filter no auto tune just amazing
Screw cutting the song short. Any headway getting Courtney on the channel?
You missed the most impressive part of her One Take Version of Circle With Me. She does godlike transitioning in the end of the song
Godlike 😂
Just use the word "expert"
Where is the rest of the song? The best part.
You guys missed the part of the Circle With Me vocal performance
And - well, you should check out the Ukrainian band Jinjer: Best entry into the rabbit hole would surely be "Pisces" (live session) or Tatiana`s vocal one-take of "Judgement and Punishment" 😊🤘
Ah, and don`t forget some other really good female singers in that genre: Of course Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy with "Handshake with Hell" or "Reason to believe", two of the very rare songs where she does not only growl,
then there is a faszinating band, also from Ukraine, Velja, with "Rigor Mortis" or with (🙄) "A Suite for an ugly Trombone" (hope I got it right...),
and then there is another great singer from that corner of the world, Moldova, with her band Infected Rain "Earth Mantra" for example or with Seas on the Moon`s "Sanctuary" or "Bad Omens": Lena Scissorhands...
Well, try it out it might be worth it! 😁🤘
