Let's not forget that Mace Windu himself considered OBi Wan as THE master of Form 3 and an excellent duelist. When someone like Windu gives praise that means something!
Well Mace himself would not have been able to use his most powerful strength against Obi Wan either as Obl did not use any Darkside powers which Mace could use against him with Vapaad!
@@deveryshepardson3640 That's not quite the way Vaapad works. Matt Stover's "Clone Wars: Shatterpoint" novel describes Vaapad as a "superconducting loop" for the force. Whatever you put in is just sent right back to you with minimal effort. So blasting a Vaapad master with force lightning would be like blasting yourself with it while your opponent is basically unscathed. The problem is Vaapad is that it requires the user to straddle the edge between the light and the dark sides of the force - if there is any chance of a Jedi falling it's likely going to happen, as it did for Windu's pupil Master Depa Billaba on his homeworld Haruun Kal in the Shatterpoint novel. Incidentally for the love of god if you haven't read it please do. It's basically Apocalypse Now meets Star Wars - and I'm there for that 😁
Kenobi defeated Darth Maul when he was still a Padawan, trained the guy that defeated Count Dooku, then defeated and crippled that same guy after Palpatine turned him to the Dark Side an took him as his apprentice. Considering that Obi-Wan had a direct hand in wrecking all three of Palpatine’s apprentices, you’d think he’d have a little more respect for the clear threat Kenobi posed.
I dont think Palpatine respected OBI's stance. He feared Yoda and WINDU ...as he knew those were the only duelists who could take him... he knew he could take out OBI... hell DOOKU took out OBI..TWICE..
Obi Wan Kenobi is my favorite type of character. His powers are middling, yet his wisdom, skill, and experience are without question. He's extremely effective and tenacious. He subtly changes the flow of major events without ever being truly recognized for his importance or potential, and he doesn't crave recognition either. As if it were by his own design, his roundabout tactics, mild manner, and aversion to violence cause people to underestimate his ability to act. And because of how easily he can go overlooked, he catches everyone off gaurd. And most importantly, he never gives up. Woe to anyone who takes him lightly, or finds themselves on the receiving end of his wit - He's the ultimate underdog, and the ultimate survivor. Obi Wan Kenobi is a true Jedi Master.
Going further, in a sense (a few flaws not withstanding), Obi Wan probably most represents what a Jedi should be - even more than Yoda. If there'd been a whole order full of Obi Wans Sidious would have stood no chance.
I believe everything you wrote is true, except you left things out. Obi-Wan was beyond the masters at times, the true apprentice of his master, he used his emotions and his attachments to make him stronger when he needed to. Master of his forms, wise, but he did something the others did not allow, Obi-Wan loved deeply, and when he felt thise people were in danger, or when his master was killed, he used his emotions to fuel the force, not using the dark, not exactly, the jedi wouldn't like it, but love made him stronger , that's why he'd win over and over in some situations, yet get smacked around in others, when he had no passion, like against Dooku , he'd lose quickly, but against maul for his master, against grievous to end the war and save the jedi, against anakin and then Vader his power , skill, and force abilities would skyrocket. He was a true force user in these times, not just a jedi master, he was even more then they were, he'd use his love and passion without going dark. With maul , his arrogance left Obi-Wan an opening which helped a lot, but he was using passion.
@@beentheredonethat5908 That's another thing. Although he *very rarely* showed it, Obi Wan leaned into his emotions heavily, and even drew on them for strength - yet he never skewed towards the dark side the way others would. He was a true master of The Force and of himself...
Obi wan, was not seen as the most powerful, yet he was always stepped up to whatever challenge he faced. The Galaxy may have been under control of the Empire for many, many years without him. Not the strongest but still the best Jedi of his time.
It depends on how you define power. How much damage could he do through the Force? Probably not a lot. How much could he endure the tests of a lifetime, inspiring all others around him, keeping hope alive and always maintaining his own dignity? In that case, he'd be the most powerful in the Galaxy.
@@Count.Saruman He has always been my favorite. The story showed in my mind that he was the greatest Jedi of his Era. Who did they trust with the Future of the Jedi. Yoda baied, all the others went and hid with no responsibility but not Kenobi, he watched over Luke. Kenobi gave everything to the Jedi and never complained. In the end he gave his life as he could serve the Jedi better as a force ghost. He was the greatest Jedi that I know of if you consider the whole package.
I like how much you reference “Palpetine simply believed Obi Wan was Lucky” Because as Obi Wan says himself “In my experience there’s no such thing as luck”
@@Syrus2006 I just feel like cutting Maul in half should have been a big tell for even the most vain and arrogant of intergalactic dictators. Obi Wan; whatever his origins and beginnings were, became an elite human Jedi, one of the most formidable of his era and was shockingly humble about all of it.
Obi-Wan is the best example of a Jedi Master who excels every aspect of the Jedi. He never really had a true weak area of his training. It all culminates as one.
@@matiasluukkanen7718 Dooku was a dueling specialist. His entire fighting style was dedicated to defeating other lightsaber wielding Force Users…and he was a Force user who was on par with Yoda in terms of power. In AOTC, Dooku defeats both Obi-wan and Anakin with his blade…and only Yoda himself drives him off. In ROTS, Dooku just uses raw power to push through Obi-wan’s defenses and rag doll him. It’s only because Anakin has grown so powerful at this point, and is now starting to draw on the Dark Side that the same didn’t happen to him, He doesn’t defeat Dooku with skill, but just raw power. Trapping Dooku’s blade, and then severing both arms before he can recover. Like brawler getting inside the reach of a more skillful boxer. But there is a reason why Sidious chose Dooku as his first apprentice, and why Yoda considered the loss of Dooku to be such a catastrophe for the Order. He thought Dooku would succeed him as Grandmaster.
@@matiasluukkanen7718 I know SW likes to take a crap on him these days, but Dooku was a legendary master who trained specifically to counter Obi-Wan's method of duelling. You can't really call that a weakness.
Out of the 7 fighting styles Dooku had number two fighting style (the # doesn't mean anything in terms of power just the style # it happened to be categorized) ... which happens to be the best form of dueling when it comes to one vs one. That alone should tell you enough. Style #7 was Mace Windu who had the purple light saber, power behind that style and anger but was able to stay away from the dark side. Style #5 was Anakin's ... diverse with raw power, speed behind it & using the force at the same time with one free hand when given the chance. #4 I believe was Yoda a lot of flipping and versatility since he was smaller and had a shorter light saber.
I've always thought that Kenobi's power comes from his heart. He loves deeply and shows compassion in all situations. I think this really shows in his reputation as a negotiator and his dedication to a defensive form. He is driven by his compassion. I think this is also why he is often seen as "Space Jesus". Not just because of his appearance but for his calm and gentle demeanor as well.
I've always seen Qui-Gon jinn as space Jesus because of his wisdom also his kindness and being super defiant and willing to shake things up for the better and calling out the top church leaders (Jedi council)on what they are doing wrong.
I believe Palpatine was too focused on raw power and did not consider enough important aspects like wisdom, kindness, and selflessness, which create a strong link w/ the light side of the Force. To me those were key elements in Obi-Wan's personality that made him a great Jedi.
@Repent or you will likewise perish. your very existence and will of typing this is proof enough that what you are preaching is nothing but hate. Please reconsider how tour spread the word of God
Indeed, Sidious was hung up on power and the Sith outlook on the galaxy and how it worked. He'd never be able to understand Obi Wan or how Obi Wan's personality and character could in fact make him far more dangerous to the Sith than his overall 'power level' could account for.
Obi-Wan was more Zen like an air bender in avatar the last airbender. He was really connected to the spiritual side of the force. This made him calm and stable.
The Tim Duncan of Jedi. Perfect analysis! Tim Duncan just put in the work, before and after practice and games. Solid, capable, not flashy, but consistent, skilled and highly intelligent.
I also love the comment about Kenobi “being a thorn in Sidious’ side.” That’s so true: he defeated & crippled Sidious’ first apprentice (Maul), trained the guy who killed his second apprentice (Dooku), killed the general of his army (Grievous), and defeated & crippled Sidious’ final apprentice (Anakin). At every turn, Kenobi was there to thwart him!!
It's a great example of Sidious' arrogance - despite all the times Obi dealt him setbacks or outright defeats Sidious never once stopped to reconsider how capable Obi actually was.
That was a great analogy that you used with Tim Duncan and Obi-Wan. As I watched Ian McGregor portray Obi-Wan I begin to really understand and love Obi-Wan in the prequels and clone wars. He clearly is one of the best characters in SWs.
Obiwan is an example of a best all around Jedi. He displays perfect balance in all aspects of Jedi practice. Never any flash, all substance. Great video SW.
I’ve always thought it was interesting how Kenobi and Sidious are the only two force users to single-handedly defeat Savage and Maul in combat simultaneously… I bet if Sidious knew that, he’d have reconsidered his evaluation of Kenobi’s threat level.
What you said about Sidious’ arrogance is spot on. Obi-Wan was said to be weak in the force, and yet, he achieved the immortality that he was seeking, and never got.
@@nate8604 Sheevy just cannot understand that there are other kinds of power than the ability to bring death and suffering. In terms of bringing hope and inspiring those around him, Kenobi is surely the greatest of all time (bar Legends Luke).
@@xblfanatic360 Sith can become force ghosts but only if they bind themselves to a certain location or item. For example, Darth Bane binding himself to his tomb, or that one Sith who bound himself to his mask, and was able to possess anyone who wore it.
One thing I always recognized watching the clone wars was that Obi Wan was typically the face of the Jedi order going into any conflict. He was very based and calm discussing politics and always had the answer that Yoda wanted to hear. I do agree that Maul always knew that Kenobi was the only thing that would hold the Sith back. Then again, Maul also knew that Skywalker was the chosen one far before the creation of Vader
i feel like obiwan was like the only force user to reach their max potential. Maybe Yoda too. I see Obi as someone with less talent but the best work ethic. Hard work beats talent
I think it was Qui-Gon's teachings of the 'Living Force' that shaped Obi-Won into the unique Jedi he became. The Living Force gave Obi-Won a very important part to play in destiny...
What I like and find to be better about Qui-Gon is he was not so traditional, he was not so tuned into "The Jedi Code" but was very tuned in to "The Will of the Force." Qui-Gon always followed the will of the force even when it meant having to stand against the council, while the rest of the Jedi followed a code that sometimes was contrary to the will of the force.
Obi-Wan maxed out the efficiency of what he was able to do despite not being as 'powerful' as Anakin, Windu, or Yoda. His raw force power was weaker than theirs, but his connection to it might've been the strongest as he was able to become One with the Force and let it flow through him in combat. The perfect skill for a person who's more of a duelist than an insane force juggernaut Dueling skill wise, he's up there with Anakin, Windu, and Yoda, and is probably one of the best in the entire franchise. That combined with a tactical mind, genius battle intellect, creativity with maxing out what he's got, Obi Wan performed insane feats like beating Maul as a Padawan, taking W's in their rematches, matching and beating Legends Asajj, eventually becoming Dooku's equal in skill in RoTS, absolutely destroying Legends Grevious, beating Anakin/Vader, and even when degrading in power and skill, was able to match a calmer more experienced Vader and didn't even lose but both sacrificed himself and literally became one with the force
Tbf Obi-Wan didn't really necessarily beat Maul as a padawan under normal circumstances. Maul could've killed him at any moment, but chose to toy with him and let his guard down (somewhat similar to Anakin/Vader as he really only survived that fight due to personally knowing Anakin and baiting him into an attack he had specifically made sure he knew how to counter, not necessarily due to his skill or power). Also he wasn't really Dooku's equal in ROTS. Dooku still embarrassed him. ANH Obi-Wan was him at his strongest as he only grew in his exile (and the light side tends to grow stronger as you get older) and Vader was past his prime. Everything else is 100% true. Obi-Wan was an absolute master of using what he had to work with and is probably one of very few Jedi to actually reach their full potential.
@@ignisinfernal1843 Even though I believe Dooku to be a step ahead of Obi Wan in skill despite his age, his Form 2 is the best counter to Form 3, so if they're both the masters of their respective forms, it basically becomes rock paper scissors.
What is interesting to me is how almost all of the other major characters in Star Wars are tempted or fall into the dark side, Obi-Wan was one who stayed with the light side from start to finish - and lasted much longer than nearly any other character in the Star Wars continuum. He also killed some major characters like Darth Maul along the way (and many others).
@@michealkachurak3834 Mace was around for three films, that is it. Obi-Wan lasted four films. Yoda is correct, forgot about him as he was also in multiple films (I think he appeared in 4 films as well, and as a Force ghost in at least three others, but he was a Muppet in any case).
@@Buc_Stops_Here agreed, but Mace did play a pretty important role in anakins turn cause he denied him the rank of master(or at least was the one who said it) and had he not rushed palpatine like he did, the story may have of not been the same
no the answer is simply, Anakin's over and ignorant confidence is what made him lose against obi wan.if he had just went and did what he was going in the first place obi would gotten killed, high ground wasn't what it seemed to be, Anakin was beaten from himself
He had excellent dueling skills, and knew Anakin's weaknesses, and might've gotten a bit lucky. He was also very wise and patient. Palpatine was also very wise and patient overall, but prone to emotional outbursts or ego strokes that caused him to make errors. Obi-Wan rarely lost his cool or his resolve, allowing him to win in the end.
It's more of Unstoppable Force vs Immovable Object. Anakin specializing in Form V meant he was almost purely offensive and one of the best at that form. Add in his fall the dark side and becoming Vader and you have one of the most lethal combatants on all time. But he squared off with Obi-Wan who was labeled by Windu as the Master of the form. Obi-Wan's defenses were so great that a fully enraged Vader stood no chance of breaking him down, but since he was under so much attack from Vader Obi-Wan had no chance to mount any offense. There is only one advantage in a Form V vs Form III fight and that's conservation of energy from Form III. Obi-Wan would have withstood long enough to win as his opponent fatigued if it was anyone else but Vader. Vader's rage gave him the ability to sustain his attack far longer than anyone else would have.
@@InfiniteMind9 *Anakin survived because of the plot Obi wan could have just used a force push on him. Anakin knew how Obi wan defeated Maul and wanted to use the same jump
Luke said it in return of jedi "your confidence is your weakness" He was too confident and obi was able to defeat maul, defeat vader, train and hide luke, shut down the tractor beam allowing luke to escape etc...enabling the destruction of the death star...
Sidious became Arrogant(a weakness) with a good reason. His plans did take down both the Republic and the Jedi Order both of them are viable threats to his power did make Sidious arrogant. Also flipping Anakin one of the most powerful Jedi of all time to the dark side as well make Sidious arrogant.
That is one reason I always loved Obi-Wan. He wasn't flashy or prideful. He was happy to let others take the fame while he did the work. He always stepped to the side. He also wasn't so black and white about light and dark. He was willing to work with people like Dooku and Ventriss. Obi-Wan was wise enough to know that most dark siders wanted to live more than anything. Whether they wanted to live so they could get revenge or other reasons he knew who he could count on. He was also smart enough to not turn his back on them because they would gladly kill him when they didn't need his help anymore. When Clone Wars finally showed us the last encounter with Maul is a great example of how wise Obi-Wan really was. All that Maul had taken from Obi-Wan and all the damage he did. Obi-Wan still understood it all.
Brooo I'm from San Antonio so the fact that you said he was the Tim Duncan of the starwars galaxy/universe blew me away!! Much love from down south ❤keep up the good work 💪
He also trained the person who defeated Dooku/Vader and who later killed Palpatine himself. Literally had a hand in everything that happened through the Saga, the Saga that matters that is...
Obi may not have been considered the greatest but yet he always seems to win. Obi has that X factor that you can’t exactly put a finger on but it helps him to win in ways that isn’t flashy but is smart. That X factor may have been his better control of his emotions so his mind wasn’t clouded with hate and anger.
I believe in the Plagueis novel, they commented that with Obi-Wan being a basically Masterless Padawan wouldn’t be up to the task of mentoring Anakin into a Jedi Knight, so Palpatine would use that towards his advantage. So, during his time talking with and reading Anakin hopes, grips and worries, Palpatine probably didn’t find much reason to reevaluate his and Plagueis’ initial conclusion. When Obi-Wan went into hiding, after defeating Anakin, he probably just wrote him off like the rest of the survivors. Obi-Wan wasn’t getting any younger, and the other Jedi hadn’t presented Darth Vader with much beyond experience points.
@@Chrasta666 In the Phantom Menace Obi-Wan was a Padawan who lost his Master (Qui-Gon Jinn). But, to honor Qui-Gon’s request for Anakin to be trained as a Jedi, the allowed him to be apprenticed by Obi-Wan, promoting him to Jedi Knight for the task. So, from Plagueis and Sidious’ perspective Obi-Wan was not only a Jedi Knight by technicality, a Knight promoted before merit, but also one without a Master. So Anakin’s Master was a masterless Padawan. And the general assumption was that Knights spent years under a Master’s guidance. They likely reasoned that Obi-Wan would be fast tracked to the rank of Master without that benefit.
I always thought it strange that Obi Wan beat Maul. On reflection he always chose the path where fighting was the last resort, even if that included surrender. That is a sign of strength and confidence.
Watch the break down of that fight. A lot of that was him being fueled and focused from having just seen his Master cut down by Maul. Best duel in the saga as far as I’m concerned
I think he was using his anger aka the dark side of the force.. I think he originally used Ataru, but then changed to Soresu.. Maul caught on he caught Kenobi slippin... Almost cost him his life
@@MrRasheed7 He was using his anger at first, but Maul nearly threw him off. Only after he rejected his anger and becalmed himself could he defeat Maul. Obi-Wan isn't Anakin or Luke. His greatest strength isn't his emotion and raw power; it's his calm, calculated thought and strategy.
Qui-Gon taught Obi Wan so much about the living force that he became its agent. For a man who doesn't believe in luck, it sure was his friend until his mission was accomplished. Same concept as Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One, when you are that attuned to the force, you become it's incarnate vessel regardless of your actual strength. The force has a will and people have destinies in Star Wars. This is the in universe explanation for plot armor that is stronger than Beskar.
He didn’t see that as anything special because it was believed it took Qui gon and Obi wan to take Maul down. If sidious had seen the real circumstances of that fight he might have taken him more serious
BROOOO I LOVE THE TIMMY REFERENCE! Big Tim Duncan fan as well and I love seeing him get the respect he deserves. He got disrespected so much but he was a fantastic player. Perfect comparison with Obi-Wan!
He is the 'perfect Jedi' as the Jedi were defined at the time. What makes his character truly noble and compelling is that he learned of his own flaws, which derived from thise of the Jedi, and taught Luke how to overcome them and surpass him.
Perhaps that's true, from a certain point of view (pun intended) but he wasn't the perfect Master to his padawan. I'm not trying to shit on Obi-Wan, as he is my favorite character, but you gotta admit that he largely contributed to Anakin's turn to the dark side. Their whole dynamic in AotC really shows that Obi-Wan failed to be strict enough, and understanding enough as a teacher. To be fair you can't really blame him, since he became Anakin's master without entirely finishing his own training (RIP Qui-Gon) and also because he had to be a mentor to him during very troubled times, during which he had many other matters to attend to.
@@royalkelin I think you’re correct as well from a certain point of view. I think someone stronger in the Force should’ve trained Anakin like either Mace Windu or Yoda. Anakin needed more discipline(not as an spankings 🤣) but some one who was capable of showing comfort and discipline. One of the things that bothered me was the disrespect at times Anakin showed Obi Wan. Because Ani was so strong in the Force I believe this was the reason he saw himself as being a greater Jedi than Kenobi(see his chit chat w Padme in Lars Home).
2:40 "...During the clone wars he was regarded as a powerful and skillful Jedi but was not seen as anything particularly special among the members of the council..." Bruh the council considered him INVINCIBLE if his lightsaber was lit. He was regarded as THE Soresu master.
This is the greatest video I've ever seen. What an amazing analogy. Tim Duncan the greatest power forward in NBA history and Obi Won. This makes me think of David Stern as Palpatine for good reasoning
That Tim Duncan comparison was PERFECT. He absolutely was Mr. Fundamental. And it showed, especially when he had his twin tower, Robinson. His list is insane. Like 14x all star, stuff like that. Solid video. Solid.
Anakin was stronger faster and more tuned with the force the only reason obi wan won the fight was because of Anakins pride and the fact that they were together all the time. Form 3 is all about waiting for a strike and exhausting your opponent to open up said opportunity. Once Anakin drowned in his pride and power obi won had set the condition to win. Also Anakin was fuming about Padme and even though obi wan was hurt about the whole situation he remained calmed and truly stuck to who he is.
lol obi wan won because HE TRAINED Anakin and taught Anakin most of what he knew but not all of what he knew Obi wan held back the fact he had some very very forbidden sabre moves in his repertoire. Moves so forbidden that not even the Sith would use them anymore such the one he used on Anakin on Mustafar which is designed to so kill slowly and painfully that the Sith forbid the use of it.
Mostly because he trained anakin and knew him. Djem So, aka Form V, was anakin's favourite and was historically created to be the solution to the extremely defensive Soresu , aka Form III. From a lightsaber technique theory, anakin had the advantage.
Don't get Anakin was fuming about Padme as why He lost? If you look at the Battle's of Luke and Vader you see Vader in E.S.B. completely annihilate Luke once Luke Hits his Armor. Pure Rage which gave Vader more power! Then when Vader mentions Sister Leia on ROTJ......Luke goes ballistic and defeats Vader like He's nothing. Vader literally F'd up Luke in a matter of seconds and took his Hand Off in ESB by far the Best Star Wars Movie! Regarding Obi Wan, He did it his way and survived many encounter's. He chose when to leave!
lol with a critical hit. The other aspect though is that Obi Wan and Anakin obsessed over that move and defense when Obi Wan defeated Maul the first time. They analyzed it bone dry and both knew the perfect defense against a jump from the low ground. Anakin even attempting was meant to disrespect Obi Wan and highlights how arrogant he was in this fight. Obi Wan's strength of defense allowed him to capitalize on Vader's arrogance, impatience and panache and I fkn love it
He won cause he trained Anakin. He knew all his moves and Anakins pride (he had secretly always seen himself as more powerful than Obi-Wan) was his downfall.
@@Mukation The novel stated that they spent thousands of hours of sparring time on top of them working together on enough live combat missions to the point where they needed full trust and understanding of each other's moves. Obi Wan trained Anakin yea, but it's been noted that a combination of Obi-Wan's lack of experience due to taking on a Padawan literally right after graduating from becoming a Padawan himself and Anakin's own natural talent carrying him along as well as Anakin and Obi Wan having different fighting styles (Obi Wan didn't specifically teach Anakin his main style of Djem So) That and the novels and many other sources outright stated that as combatants and duelist, Anakin and Obi Wan were dead even as they had a complete understanding of each other. Anakin got amped by the Dark Side Emotions and Obi Wan got amped by giving himself over to the force. Obi-Wan had the advantage of being able to let the force guide his body and movements without having to think while his brain could think of plans and strategies mid fight while Anakin was focused on murder
It doesnt go both ways, its like a father playing his high school son in basketball. The son is more athletic, younger and can run circled around his dad but still loses to his dad one on one. Dad knows his son much better than the son knows his dad. Dad knows all the sons weaknesses while the son thinks he is younger and can rely on his athleticism to win the game. I think think this is a more accurate description of obi wan vs anikan. Also obi wan was in his prime, nobody is defeating their mentor in their prime in anything.

Really loved the comp with Tim Duncan! Indeed, It makes a lot of sense
My favorite Obi-Wan moment of all time is when he was fighting Sauvage and Darth Maul and Maul goes we are two you are one. Then Kenobi just looks him right in the eye like a bad ass and goes “you are mistaken” ignites the other light saber and proceeds own them both
Like what Methos said in highlander series. Just because I don't like to fight doesn't mean that I can't. This is why I love Kenobi of all the characters in Star Wars, that's why I can't wait till the series comes out and I hope it shows a layer new of him, the book Kenobi I read so many times did that and I hope the series comes close to that.
I'd die if Obi-Wan would pop up every time Sidious was in the middle of something. Ghost trolling him for years and no one else in the room can see him or figure out why Palps is frying everything in sight.
Obi Wan Kenobi was as Anakin said "as wise as Master Yoda , and as powerful as Master Windu". Not light praise coming from where it came. Anakin in episode 2 was one of very few that saw all that Obi Wan accomplished, so Anakin wasnt lulled into thinking Obi Wan was just average bc of not being flashy. Anakin saw the real Obi Wan.
Indeed, there's a really good case to be made that Obi was in fact the ideal Jedi, certainly for his era if not ever, he was everything they aspired to be while being free of many of the flaws that had crept in by then.
Good insight. Thank you. Obi One is another example of what good quality story telling and how it sets apart Star Wars when it relied heavily on its characters and their stories and not all the glitter and glam that comes from being owned by the mouse.
Obi-Wan has always been my favorite Jedi. He's a "Jack-of-all-trades" without falling into the "Master-of-none" trap. Sure, he's not as powerful in single aspects of being a Jedi or the Force as other of his contemporaries, but you'll be hard pressed to find another one who is so skilled in ALL of them AT THE SAME TIME.
@@XanderVJ As he would say ".....from a certain point of view....". He is my fav as well. He is to put it in sporting terms someone the opposition fans often overlook but his teammates see him as the real star of the team. He is evenly awesome with no genuine weak links
Excellent video. What most fans fail to realize is Opie wants initial connection to the force was very weak. But over the course of his life he became an overwhelming powerhouse and unbreakable defense. Of the highest level. Obi-Wan is low-key the goat.
Obi-wan was a example of what a Jedi master who is completely surrendered to The Force looks like. He defeated Greivous. He defeated Darth Vader because he could root himself in the Light, in a way that was unshakeable. So he could draw whatever he needed, and do whatever the Will of The Force required of him. Even to willingly sacrificing himself so that Luke could escape the Death Star. OTOH, the Dark Side comes to dominate a Sith. Ultimately blinding them to their own flaws and limitations. Maul gloated over seemingly helpless Obi-wan, creating the opening he needed to defeat Maul as a padawan. Grievous was helpless against Jedi that he couldn’t intimidate and use fear to weaken their connection to the Force. On Mustafar Vader tried to use blind rage and raw power to overwhelm Obi-wan, only to have the Jedi Master accept the beating until Vader made a near-fatal error born of Dark Side fueled arrogance. On the Death Star, a more cautious and cunning Vader tried to use contempt and mockery to weaken Obi-wan’s stance in the Force. Only to have Obi-wan toy with him and use the Sith Lord to advance the Will of the Light at his expense. Ultimately setting in motion the events am that destroyed the Sith and redeemed his lost apprentice. Although Yoda trained Luke, Obi-wan was the foundation that Legends Luke Skywalker built his own Jedi Order upon.
I actually thought Legends Luke was far closer to Anakin than to Obi-Wan. He even blamed Obi-Wan for Anakin's fall multiple times, while Anakin was being put on a pedestal. Frankly, I thought it added some depth to his character, that he was able to recognise some of Obi-Wan's flaws and build on them. As for completely surrendering to the Force, I think that's what happened in a New Hope, but not in ROTS. In ROTS, his defeat of Anakin was an act of pure willpower on his part- as well as the clear strategy and calculation he used to defeat him. That wasn't the will of the Force at work; that was the will of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
@@Count.Saruman Disagree. Anakin and Luke in his youth were very similar. Emotional. Impulsive. Carrying themselves with an angry edge. So did Obi-wan. The difference is that Obi-wan and Luke (Legends) grew out of it. While Anakin and Luke (Last Jedi) did not. The reason Anakin fell to the dark side is because the Order failed him, not Obi-wan. Anakin was filled with rage from his life as a slave and fear from being taken from his mother and losing all the important people in his life. Yoda offered him nothing to deal with those emotions in a healthy way. Perhaps as part of a species that lived for a thousand years, he grew to be comfortable with loss in a way that humans simply cannot match. So Anakin was vulnerable to being corrupted by Palpatine….and Yoda repeated the same mistakes with Luke and came close to losing him as well (Return of the Jedi). Only seeing the fate of his father gave Luke the resolve to pull back from that fear-driven abyss. Luke Legends learned from this, and didn’t repeat the mistakes that Yoda made with his Jedi Order. He let his Jedi form attachment and grow and learn to make peace with loss. Rather than insisting that it didn’t exist, and that it could be ignored (My failure, this is.) Yoda deserves credit in that he faced his own failures and didn’t run and hide from them like Luke Last Jedi did. He learned from most of them and passed it on to Luke…but not all of them.
Obi-Wan Kenobi had The High Ground actually George Lucas said the Force was with Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan was also on the defense he didn't want to kill Anakin , he's like my brother
I love that Obiwan and Anakin are such polar opposites, Anakin was a prodigy and was born with insane potential while Obiwan had to work and train himself to become the Jedi he became. And I love the Obiwan is the Tim Duncan of the Star Wars universe analogy it was spot on.
Such a great point. That Obi Wan, whom his/Palpatine's second apprentice mocked brutally, yet that third apprentice who killed the second finally in humiliating fashion; Obi ended up dismantling that third greatest apprentice, the highest potential one ever, i.e., Darth Vader, and he also set the other, Luke on the path, to derail the empire (also protecting and hiding him, from the empire). And Obi ultimately achieved great power in the force, that he then became a force ghost and therefore, lives forever (something Palpatine greatly wanted). I agree, not Jordan or Kobe, but Tim Duncan, well played sir, on the sports analogy, works well here. 🙂👌🏼 A great champion, that is not flashy, works hard and super disciplined, that ppl truly underestimate in their raw gifts, until you look up in awe, and see what they actually achieved, overall.
Comparing obi Wan kenobi to Tim Duncan may be the best analogy or comparison I have ever heard! They are both Mr Fundamental. As a huge star wars fan and a long time basketball fan, that really made my day
Brilliant basketball analogy, I love Tim Duncan. You nailed this! And yeah, Annakin defeated himself via overconfidence from bad luck....stuck on a melting piece of metal...crazy
Arrogance is normally the downfall of the Sith. Had Anakin had the knowledge, and wisdom of his older self, he’d have beaten Obi-Wan handedly. Luke had his fathers traits, but he was able to gain control of his emotions at critical points.
Luke also didn't grow up with everyone telling him he was the Chosen One, that he would be the most powerful of them all, that he was supposed to balance the force and solve all their problems and then also be constantly treated like he doesn't matter and his are opinion is garbage. Luke was allowed to emotionally mature in a normal setting before the weight of the galaxy was thrust upon his shoulders.
Vader still lost the real fight. He was afraid of Obi-Wan. During his more fleshy days, bc he was stronger than Obi-Wan, he thought he could defeat him. Obi-Wan played the long game. And won both times.
@@michaellindgren9653 but Anakin never took his studies seriously. He was arrogant bc he was developing force powers easier an faster than everyone. But the masters wanted to teach him like everyone else. Anakin just didn't listen. And vader barely listened to his master
@@qtindavis433 They wanted to teach, but the Jedi never trusted him fully, that rubs anyone the wrong way. Then you ask him to spy on the only dude who ever really showed any faith in his abilities, who just so happened to be a Sith Lord in disguise. What’s funny is, the comment you made about him not taking his studies seriously, Obi-Wan told him in AOTC that if he trained more than he did, his lightsaber skills would’ve rivaled Master Yoda’s….and he probably was 16 around that time.
I Wonder if Palpatine's darkness Clouded him from seeing the light in Obi-Wan. Maybe he was able to hide his true power from him, or Palpatine simply did not understand what true power actually is. It comes from love and service not domination and fear.
It's not complicated. Obi Wan was smarter... Period. Because Obi Wan knew what he was and wasn't. He accepted his shortcomings and worked hard to hone other abilities to make up for them. This made Obi Wan a deadly foe that enabled him to win battle after battle. Obi Wan was a true warrior. I believe the emperor let him be because he recognized that Obi Wan was cunning and more trouble than he was worth. Obi beat Vader because he was smarter, clear minded, more aware and more cunning. If it wasn't the high ground, Obi Wan would have found another tactic to beat him. Obi Wan made such an impression on Vader that he never underestimated another opponent and he started being patient and calculating. I will say Obi Wan taught Vader well.
Been watching your videos for at least 5 years, hadn’t seen any newer stuff in a while. Just dropped in to say, good job. Obi Wan & Qui Gon are two of my favorite, & imo top caliber skill level, Jedi. They both have tendencies towards grey Jedi ideology, though both firmly rooted on the side of light. Obi Wan very much was not flashy, & for this was severely underestimated time & again. Thank you for the thought provoking vid. Glad to see you still making them.
I've always seen the fight as the difference between a young inexperienced but very strong martial artist and an old master. The young buck has raw strength and power but a master has the control and focus and (barring massive differences in weight class, endurance, etc) will clean the young bucks clock. Anakin is incredibly powerful (more so then Obi Wan) but Obi Wan has been training far longer and has more control and discipline (as well as not being a weakling by any stretch of the imagination). Add to that that Vader was running on hate and rage where while Obi Wan while hurt and betrayed and devastated was still in control of himself and yeah it makes sense who won.
Makes sense a Jedi known to LITERALLY the entire franchise of his time as THE Defensive specialist WOULD best their own student... Palps was arrogant and a bit biased an full of himself in many ways. He really shoulda at least expected Anakin to either lose or have to need help at some point bare minimum a critical moment. Sideous had to be aware of Anakin's growing power but also quite a bit of arrogance an overconfidence. Dooku even gave up in the movies we saw he was a bit disappointed in Kenobi's abilities. That crack about Yoda's regard, so makes sense that it wouldn't just be a Sith ability or general fight strategy sending him the put downs an taunts.
I mean, sure... in theory. But as we all know, Obi Wan didn't win because of his omg super defense tactics or whatever. He won because Anakin was a brainless dipshit who prioritized showing off even though he was supposedly full of dark energies and driven by murderous instinct or whatever the hell. Whatever we gotta do to pretend like the high ground scene wasn't the most embarrassing finish ever, I guess.
I believe that Obi One was in the top three along with Mace and Yoda. Obi One defeated so many that other Jedi's couldn't. Anakin, General Grevouis, Darth Maul, twice. And so many more.
Eeeyup - then he did reasonably well as a youngling (was a good student) - but no master wanted to train him. So he ended up serving in one of Jedi's auxiliary corps (I think it was agricultural) on a Planet where former apprentice of Qui-Gon Jinn was "hiding" and was instrumental in helping to bring him down. Hence Qui-Gon took his as an apprentice - despite earlier not wanting (because of his former one going to the dark side).
No, that's wrong. He's always been listed as remarkably talented, if not titanic in potential. Masters didn't want to train him because as a child, he had some anger issues. Unlike Obi-Wan himself with Anakin or even Yoda with Dooku, Qui-Gon was patient with him and taught him humility.
@@Count.Saruman Depends on source. It's been years since I've read books and checked then canonical comics and information. I do remember that he was deemed as being at best average with the force (it might have been his anger issues) and having problems as youngling. This might not be reflected in his midichlorian count (especially since the idea was hated, so midichlorians quickly went quiet and were barely mentioned) - which as we know mostly give you the ceiling potential. Obi-Wan was mostly portrayed as "average" Jedi who reached greatness through tons of work, patient guidance and buckets of sweat rather than having such raw power that once he learned for example Force-push he wouldn't need to optimize it (like was the case for several Jedi with seemingly "stronger potential"). Which leads to the fact that people expect quick results, so authors didn't exactly know how to write a "relatively weak" Obi-Wan. And you're correct that it was because of Qui-Gon's patience that he was able to grow up as a Jedi and thanks to this guidance kept growing up even after Qui Gon's death. I do realize that I don't disagree with you and my point is mostly that readers and other fans were perceived as not liking their "Legendary Jedi" still needing a lot to learn, so a lot of his problems were glossed over or we have contradicting sources that start to say that he was always "gifted and strong", rather than "gifted and hard-working". Then again - most stuff I've read about this period in his life was like 2 decades ago. I definitely remember that there were 2 versions for some time - one had him having problems even getting into Academy, but being a good student and the other had him being gifted, but having a lot of issues that made it so he wouldn't be even accepted to training by any Master. It seems I unintentionally mixed both of them, when I think the first one was quickly phased out and probably retconned.
@@jannegrey I got it from Jedi Apprentice, not Master and Apprentice. Obi-Wan is referenced to have anger issues there, but he's not stated to be anything less than talented. Personally, I like to imagine his gifts as remarkable, just not on the same level as the Skywalkers, Yoda and Windu- or even Dooku, for that matter. That doesn't mean he's weak, just that his contemporaries are part of an elite club and that he tends to come up against opponents with more direct ability to cause destruction with the Force than he has most of the time.
Hey Stupendous! Big fan of the channel! I've been thinking about something and maybe you might know the answer. If a strong Sith Lord, lets use Sideous as an example, were to encounter a Force Ghost, do you think he'd be able to "defeat" or disrupt them in any way? Or would they just linger around and bug him? May the Force be with you!

Haha what
Yo that’s FACTS LOOOOOOOOL mr Fundamental
i was thinking of the best way to describe Kenobi, and here it is!
That is a perfect description.
Facts its because he is predominantly A post player to the naked eye thats boring.
@@MLaak86 I agree. Obi Wan is like an archetypical Jedi.
@@beentheredonethat5908 That's another thing. Although he *very rarely* showed it, Obi Wan leaned into his emotions heavily, and even drew on them for strength - yet he never skewed towards the dark side the way others would. He was a true master of The Force and of himself...

Not really he used forbidden moves every opponent he faced so not the most powerful out there
It depends on how you define power. How much damage could he do through the Force? Probably not a lot. How much could he endure the tests of a lifetime, inspiring all others around him, keeping hope alive and always maintaining his own dignity? In that case, he'd be the most powerful in the Galaxy.

He had a weakness. Its name was Dooku.
What you said about Sidious’ arrogance is spot on. Obi-Wan was said to be weak in the force, and yet, he achieved the immortality that he was seeking, and never got.

What I like and find to be better about Qui-Gon is he was not so traditional, he was not so tuned into "The Jedi Code" but was very tuned in to "The Will of the Force."
Qui-Gon always followed the will of the force even when it meant having to stand against the council, while the rest of the Jedi followed a code that sometimes was contrary to the will of the force.
It wasn't the living Force they were referring to but the "cosmic force"..
The perfect skill for a person who's more of a duelist than an insane force juggernaut
Dueling skill wise, he's up there with Anakin, Windu, and Yoda, and is probably one of the best in the entire franchise.
Obiwan was more powerful in the force than any of his previous versions

What is interesting to me is how almost all of the other major characters in Star Wars are tempted or fall into the dark side, Obi-Wan was one who stayed with the light side from start to finish - and lasted much longer than nearly any other character in the Star Wars continuum. This is the way
He shouldn’t have tried it
its over daryl I have the high ground

@@ChipzBitz good for you, put we arent going to watch it.
why did they regard him as a master less padawan?
@@eds1942 ahh that makes sense, appreciate the info man!
The "High ground".
Obi Wan warned Anakin not to try it because he had already figured out how to counter it from his fight with Maul in TPM.
Obi-Wan is the “Tim Duncan of the Star Wars galaxy”. Love this!
DUDE amazing analogy with Duncan ! I am legit a fan for life now
I always thought it strange that Obi Wan beat Maul.

Obi Wan just unspectacularly kept not getting killed by Maul until Maul made a mistake.
Really like that Basketball comparison you made at the end. Very well said.
Your analogy was so on point it’s scary.. Great informative job.. I salute you…..
He should have realized this about Obi Wan after he took out his first apprentice

Obi-Wan is in many ways the “perfect Jedi”
Agreed...and even that is overlooked.

Well said
lol obi wan won because HE TRAINED Anakin and taught Anakin most of what he knew but not all of what he knew Obi wan held back the fact he had some very very forbidden sabre moves in his repertoire.
He had the high ground!
That analogy with Tim Duncan is Amazing! Love Star Wars and The NBA so that really hit home for me. Great stuff!
Obi-Wan used High Ground
It was super effective
lol with a critical hit. Obi Wan's strength of defense allowed him to capitalize on Vader's arrogance, impatience and panache and I fkn love it
10:11 “in following obi wan defeating- in following obi wan defeating 😀”
Masterful. Obi-Wan excelled at the power of love. A force ultimately greater than anything else.
That Tim Duncan analogy was masterful! As a fan of basketball, and Star Wars, that was a combo analogy that really drove your point home.
He won cause he trained Anakin. He knew all his moves and Anakins pride (he had secretly always seen himself as more powerful than Obi-Wan) was his downfall.
Anakin knew all of Obi-Wan's moves to so it cancels out
@@jocoolshow Not really, obi-wan trained him since he was a kid. Obi-wan knows how Anakin thinks more intimatly than the other way around.
@@Mukation The novel stated that they spent thousands of hours of sparring time on top of them working together on enough live combat missions to the point where they needed full trust and understanding of each other's moves.
Obi Wan trained Anakin yea, but it's been noted that a combination of Obi-Wan's lack of experience due to taking on a Padawan literally right after graduating from becoming a Padawan himself and Anakin's own natural talent carrying him along as well as Anakin and Obi Wan having different fighting styles (Obi Wan didn't specifically teach Anakin his main style of Djem So)
That and the novels and many other sources outright stated that as combatants and duelist, Anakin and Obi Wan were dead even as they had a complete understanding of each other. Anakin got amped by the Dark Side Emotions and Obi Wan got amped by giving himself over to the force. Obi-Wan had the advantage of being able to let the force guide his body and movements without having to think while his brain could think of plans and strategies mid fight while Anakin was focused on murder
@@Mukation there's zero proof of this. they were brothers. the connection goes both ways. obi wan was just superior.

Great analogy!! I couldn't agree more well spoken!!

…oh wait, I guess it doesn’t, nevermind
I'd die if Obi-Wan would pop up every time Sidious was in the middle of something. Ghost trolling him for years and no one else in the room can see him or figure out why Palps is frying everything in sight.

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine” - Obi-Wan Kenobi, May 25th, 1977
He wasn’t lying 💯👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
As a super Spurs fan, and Star wars nerd I was NOT expecting the Tim Duncan comparison here and I LOVE it.
Good insight. Thank you. Obi One is another example of what good quality story telling and how it sets apart Star Wars when it relied heavily on its characters and their stories and not all the glitter and glam that comes from being owned by the mouse.
“Speak softly and carry a Bug Stick”
He had the perfect defense. He dualed Yoda and windu to draws because they could not pass his defence
This was a beautiful video man
Obi-Wan has always been my favorite Jedi.
Well the complete saying is "A jack of all trades is a master on none, but oftentimes better than a master of one". Which, as you say sums up, Obi-Wan
@@himthatis6698 Haha. Fair point. It's just that I don't feel comfortable calling Obi-Wan "Master of none". He IS a Jedi Master, after all. lol
@@XanderVJ As he would say ".....from a certain point of view....". He is my fav as well. He is to put it in sporting terms someone the opposition fans often overlook but his teammates see him as the real star of the team. He is evenly awesome with no genuine weak links
Well his the master of form 3, Soresu
Rather than insisting that it didn’t exist, and that it could be ignored (My failure, this is.)
Yoda deserves credit in that he faced his own failures and didn’t run and hide from them like Luke Last Jedi did. He learned from most of them and passed it on to Luke…but not all of them.
Enjoyed as well as agree with the analysis, and the comparison with Tim Duncan.
One of my favorite videos from you. Loved the Tim Duncan comparison.

Love the thought that Obi Wan is the Tim Duncan of the Force! Well done!
I Wonder if Palpatine's darkness Clouded him from seeing the light in Obi-Wan. Maybe he was able to hide his true power from him, or Palpatine simply did not understand what true power actually is. It comes from love and service not domination and fear.
Nice try... I am sure every sucker out there will buy into being such a sucker himself, before he learns better from bitter personal experience... 😂
humility was his greatest trait and what separated him from others
Lol. Love the Big Fundamental connection. Great stuff!
We all know how Obi Wan managed to beat Anakin Mr. Darth Vader.... With the power of the HIGH GROUND!
I’m pretty sure in the RoTS novelisation Dooku kept saying to Palpatine that they should recruit Obi Wan instead of Anakin
Loved your analogy with Tim Duncan. Spot on for OBK.
I believe that Obi One was in the top three along with Mace and Yoda. Obi One defeated so many that other Jedi's couldn't. Anakin, General Grevouis, Darth Maul, twice. And so many more.
I argue Qui-Gon was better. I think he would have defeated Maul had he not been distracted
Maul almost killed him on Tatuinne (spelled wrong)if the ship didn't come and rescue him.
Count Dooku destroyed Obi-Wan in seconds every fight.
The comparison between Kenobi and Timmy is spot on and a perfect analogy to describe how he is compared to other elites
I think I read somewhere that Obi-Wan was barley accepted for Jedi training do to his midichlorian count. 🤔
@@jannegrey He’s definitely an overachiever and Legend
Loved your basketball analogy. That was perfect. 🔥🔥
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the greatest well balanced force users of all time ⏲
Obi-Wan is the quintessential jedi.
Linger around and bug him is too funny
