I minimized my screentime earlier this year - almost no video games, almost no phone, etc. - and I was so much happier. The fear of missing out is something so hard to get control over, especially for people like me, who have ADHD. At times, I can't even listen to music or I'll get distracted by it immediately. Lately, I started to be active on social media again and... it feels like I am poisoning myself with it.
Born in the 90s, I oh-so very often wish to go back to the time when we only used our phones to message or call each other.
Smartphones - to me - are both a blessing and a curse.

I also have ADHD, born in the late 90s. The constant urge to check Discord, Reddit and UA-cam is absolutely devastating. I am so far behind on my studies, but I can't break this curse. I jsut want to chase that dopamine, again and again and again. I don't enjoy video games anymore, I can't watch a full episode of anything without getting bored and wanting to check my phone, I can't read the several books I've been itching to read for years now.
I remember when my phone could only play angry birds and clash of clans, facebook was the standard social media and it didn't have any power over me, and I actually enjoyed things. Oh my god. What happened?
Listening to brown noise is good for forcing myself to study or take care of chores but it is by no means a miracle cure.

@@xXDonTdODRugZXx you know what helps - at least a little bit better? Get yourself a smartwatch. I have a fitBit, and I can’t live without it anymore. Turn your notifications and indicators off, set your phone on silent (no vibrations, too!) and set up your smartwatch to notify you when you receive a call, a message (a REAL message, not WhatsApp or Discord) or when there’s an appointment noted in the calendar. This way you are free to neglect your phone easier and are still reachable to those who want to reach you. our attention spans aren't decreasing; what's actually happening is that the world around us has gotten terrifyingly good at hijacking our attention. There's actually no study that indicates our attention span is worsening - a bunch of articles all hinting at a microsoft study that only had a figure of it that isn't related to the findings of the study. Our attention spans are just as good as they have always been; we can still read books as long as we enjoy them, we can still watch movies, we can still game for hours on end or focus on any enjoyable activity for a long period of time. It's more of a serotonin baseline decrease (if I were to hypothesize) from the constant bombardment of dopaminergic hormones and the overwhelming amount of information we absorb throughout our daily lives (we can try cutting off social media and such, but that's not an addiction, but rather a coping mechanism to deal with this lower serotonin baseline and the decay of our social lives since 2020 hasn't made that any easier.).
TLDR; attention spans aren't decreasing, nothing wrong with us; it's our overstimulating environments as you correctly state in the video :)

We absolutely appreciate all the strategies that you gave us in this video, Ruri! Even though I've been implementing some of them in my life for the purpose of getting out of my comfort zone and finally enhance my productivity significantly, one of the most valuable and interesting insights that I have never tried out previously is reading ficcional books at night, largely before sleep. That's because I authentically used to have trouble with sleeping too late, almost midnight, just because I would constantly waste over an hour on social media, which impacts not only our quality of sleep, but also our health at all negatively in the long-term. Neverhtless, when I started incorporating this tip in reading ficcional books a few minutes before actually going to bed, I've realized a signficant improvement in my quality of sleep and all my health. It definitely helped me to end up the day by feeling happy and much less anxiously, especially if the book don't have a sad and terrible end in addition to owning an easy and simple language to understand. I've recently tried it out by reading "Wonder" and it worked perfectly to me. So thanks a bunch for the tip, Ruri. I'm sure it'll also work to everybody else who watch your channel.

There was a point during lockdown when I started noticing that I was spending so much more time on social media, achieving nothing, and feeling unsatisfied, bored, listless and definitely losing physical fitness. I had to go back to [my] basics: screen time for news and emails, and movies late in the day; position guitar, books, magazines nearby bc they're my dopamine/satisfaction hits; walk twice a day. My work was really smart too - we were given 3 "must do" tasks: check in every day, talk to others about resilience, hit output deadlines. Managers didn't want to be looking over our shoulders, checking if we were spending 8 hours a day on task, just that we were engaged, communicating and managing time. That meant taking responsibility for our screen time. It was the simplest of frameworks but had a huge impact.

I got rid of social media over the course of the last two years, last one was Instagram which I'm not using anymore since last weekend. I still work with social media everyday because I'm an editor and social media manager, but that's completely different as I'm only creating and not mindlessly and passively consuming. Have to say I'm feeling so much better without being interrupted by social media 20 times a day, I got more time to focus on important things like getting enough sleep and eating healthy. Over all I'm much more satisfied with my life without social media.

I also would imagine that the classical conditioning of picking up your phone during a task would represent a lapse in concentration which is caused by the proximity of the phone right next to the user. I learned from this video. Thanks Ruri!

How can you even promote your instagram in your bio while having such a negative eye on social media? Ofc it´s a financial source for you right? so why not, but isnt that extremely contradictional?
Wanting people to focus more on themselves while posting like every other instagram influencer their perfect world? What sets you apart from them?
Just wondering because there are actually youtubers who are very anti on social media, having the same opinions like you while actually not having it and not promoting it.
Being negative on social media these days espcially among young people who spend their whole day on it, really became a trend right? Also good money income i guess. xD It´s actually insane.

The ironic thing about her talking about making 6 figures thanks to social media is that that very income DEPENDS on her audience being overstimulated and addicted. Otherwise there would not be nearly enough people tuning into her content for her to make that much. You are not providing any new information, you are not offering any significant skills, you are just a copy of many others out there, spreading the same information, doing the same thing. No added value whatsoever, and in many cases, spreading misinformation.
