Having the most beautiful spiral or camel position is something every skater should aim for. What that looks like can be different for everyone. Some skaters want a strong spiral position, while others prefer a more elegant look. But everyone agrees on one thing: having a high free leg is super important!
In this week’s lesson, we're off the ice to show you the best exercise that helped us get our high free leg position. We’ll explain where most skaters get stuck, why being flexible isn’t enough, and how this exercise will help you on the ice. So, if you're ready to get your free leg up high, check out this lesson!
In this lesson you'll learn:
- The go-to exercise every figure skater should be doing for a higher leg
- Why flexibility + ________ = easier spirals/camels
- The mistakes skaters can make when working towards a beautiful position
Happy Skating!
Will ankle weights help with the strength part? I have trouble locking out my knee when my foot gets higher than my hip.
It can help but definitely give this exercise a go. Try doing this exercise a couple times a week and keep us up to date on it ❤️❤️❤️
Very good exercise and tip on which leg to put on the bar. I will try this.
Glad it was helpful and definitely give it a go ❤️
What can I use if I do not have a bar?
A chair?
I like to stretch at the rink’s bar
Any sort of ledge. A brick wall. Boxes at a gym in front of a mirror. Your sofa/bed depending on your height.
I tried it on the table and back of the couch and both worked!
You can try using the board/barrier 👍❤️
Thank you! This helps so much! I just retired from gymnastics to be a full time figure skater, and I have the strength and flexibility to raise that leg over my head… but not hold it there while I skate! Different muscles I guess? I’ll be doing your exercises daily!
That’s so amazing and welcome ❤️❤️❤️ definitely use this exercise but I think it would be a matter of getting comfortable balancing on a blade while gliding. You absolutely have this. So happy you have joined figure skating ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes, totally! I am used to balancing on one leg (like what we did on the beam), but I think moving on that one leg is throwing me off. I just have to get used to constant motion. But it’s really fun, too. I started the learn to skate program today! They put me in beginner 6. I need to do the T stop on my bad leg better. I’ve been taking private lessons for about 10 weeks now, and I learned to do it on my right foot… but I never tried it on the left 😅
Thank you so much for the tips! I’ve been placing my inner legs and my coach always say that I need to pull my legs back everytime! I’ll try this for the better posture from now on.
Very welcome ❤️❤️❤️
Saved this to my "spirals off ice exercises " playlist. Thank you , Stacey
