I'm an old skater, its been about 40 years since i skated, Ice Dancing, The Rocker Foxtrot, Killian, Blues, and many others, I tried to skate with new boots and dance blades a few months ago and could hardly stand, i had a few lessons, and managed to glide very cautiously, but unfortunately had a few falls, which knocked my confidence levels, seeing your videos and the off ice exercise with the Bosu ball have given me a new hope, i have ordered a ball, and hope to strengthen my legs and feet, you said doing the balance things pointing the foot to the side and back etc. pointing to the front would help a dancer extend the leg and point the toe, which happens a lot in dance. Thanks for rekindling and old man in hoping to dance again. cheers. John. Australia.

I'm always amused that one of the reasons I took up skating was to strengthen my ankles (which have always had a tendency to turn under me) and now I'm trying to strengthen my ankles in order to skate better. :-D Thank you as always - I'm hoping this will help with the edges, especially skating backwards which has the bonus challenge of not being able to see where I'm going unless I turn my head which immediately adds wobbles. And your video last week about practicing balancing just behind the rocker will help build the muscle memory I need to get my stubborn two-foot turns without overthinking myself to a halt!

That is a funny turn-around! Skating does build ankle strength, but we also need strong ankles for skating! 😆 I see that you are a new member of my channel, Thank you so much!!

Most gyms have bosu balls - no need to buy your own. I am determined to experiment to improve balancing on my edges using it. Don't care if I get funny stares. My daughter Hannah (right in profile picture) won six certificate in her first term learning figure skating. She loves Coach Julia!

    • @CoachJulia

Congrats to Hannah! That is awesome! Yes, I usually use the Bosu Ball at my gym, and often incorporate free weights into my use of it. I say, just go for at the gym, who cares what the rest think! 😁

Skaters who do not have a BOSU ball may benefit from one of these alternatives: (1) A folded up bath towel, folded to be as thick or as thin as you want. (2) A thick pillow. (3) A folded up yoga mat.
Place the folded up towel (or option (2) or (3)) on the floor, step one foot on it and do the one-foot balance exercises that you want.

This video is super helpful! I've been trying to find a good off ice workout for a while now. Ordered the bosu ball and just waiting for it to arrive!
My biggest struggle right now is with crossovers. I've been stuck at LTS adult 5 for a while now because I cannot figure out how to do the backwards crossover. Any tips or workouts on/off the ice that I can do to improve backwards crossovers? My biggest struggle with them is that I cannot get my feet to cross over without feeling like I am going to trip.

First off- have you seen my backwards crossover tutorial? ua-cam.com/video/9mhnUmSCTUY/v-deo.html I also like to have my students practice doing two-foot glides with their legs crossed, both forwards and backwards. You can do this near the wall in a straight line to get used to it.

I've had them for a year and about a month now. They just started hurting really badly. There's already pressure on the ball of my foot and usually it hurts a bit after but the other day it was like 3× as much. Anf the tongue of my skates are so bendy (a bit too much).
