My spinner came yesterday so I could practice my program off ice, and I slammed into the corner of my wall and have a cut on my head. I just watched this video and now know how not to smash my head into a wall. Thanks coach Julia!
Hi Coach Julia! I'm new to all of this. You can just imagine my shock and excitement about a spinner! Never knew you could practice off ice. Very helpful channel you got here. I'll definitely try out classes on figure-skating after the pandemic. This is a good at-home practice
I searched for the Jerry spinner, but here in Canada it's $80+ to order. Instead, I then got 6" lazy susan ball bearing plate, cut two 8.5"x8.5"x1/4" high density two, and glued these together with E6000 glue. Then added anti-slip tape, so have a virtually identical spinner for 1/3 of the cost. It spins like crazy, I can't yet skate more than basic forward, so really hoping on learning balance :-)
This metal spinner has helped me to be able to do my one-foot spin on the ice now! I can find my balance quicker plus get my free left leg (I spin clockwise) where it needs to be to help me balance, and I'm not as wobbly! Its surely worth the $$. Thanks so much! Happy skating, Joyce from Utah.
Thank you for this video Julia, it’s helped me understand certain mistakes I’ve been making. Also you mentioning the outside edge somewhat helped with the position on the spinner. I’ve got the Edea spinner and it annoys me how it travels. Wish I had known about Jerry’s version before
Thanks Julia, another great video. Do you have any advice to manage dizziness? I limit my session to 20 minutes with max 3 repetitions and 90 seconds breaks in between. Interestingly, I am ok while practicing but 45 minutes after I stop, I start feeling nauseous. This can last up to 3 hours…It sucks! But I won’t stop practicing. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Awe, that is so sweet of you to say. Check out my playlist of beginner moves, like forward skating, stopping and even crossovers. Be patient with yourself as you learn. 😁
Got my spinner!! Day 1: my foot kept collapsing inwards & dumping me off around 270* - mitigated by wearing shoes with arch support. Now when my foot collapses inwards I can bring it back on balance without being dumped off. Still working on keeping the rest of my muscles over my axis :D
Day 2: I read in the replies that your weight should be on the ball of your foot so I practiced with my heel slightly lifted off the spinner. It was hecking hard but I think I improved between the start of the hour and the end.
@@CoachJulia so much harder than it looks 🙈 I always struggle to keep my hips square in every skating element (backward crossovers were a nightmare at the beginning) but I'll keep trying. So far I've only broken one glass!! 😂
Overall - really good demonstration. Could you at least make another short video with a left-handed person on the spinner? Thanks. For us lefties, the struggle is real. :)
So...I know practising at speed is not important as it's more about stability, but how fast/how long can you as a professional hold a spin on this spinner? :D Just asking out of curiousity. I myself will spend the next weeks trying to not fall off that thing haha
Honestly, I am not super fast at it. I’ve used them in the past, but I’ve never really focused on perfecting spins on it. I am usually at the rink 5/6 days a week so not really interested in more work when I get home. 😆 But the pandemic and stay at home orders have made many people look for alternatives, me included. 😁
Really helpful video, except for a left-handed person. Right handed people just don't realize that the instruction of "Just do the reverse" for lefties simply does not cut it. For something like this, please find a left handed person to demonstrate the actual arm / leg positions for your left-handed viewers. I'm a lefty and it's the same problem in golf. Just saying 'reverse' is truly a SMH moment.
Thank you very much! I ordered an edea spinner a few days ago, your tutorial will be really helpful! Do you have specific tips to practice with an edea spinner?
Vincent Biarneix The main thing is that edea spinners tend to put you back on your heel. So be very careful about staying up on the ball off your foot where your rocker would be.
Ho coach Julia! Thanks for the amazing explanations as always. I found that on the spinner I find balance spinning clockwise, while on the ice my spins work counter clockwise. I really don’t understand why 😅 I will practice both 😊 greetings from Italy 🇮🇹❤️
One question Julia: I'm starting spinning but: If I'm right handed am I supposed to use my right leg to spin or the left? Because i feel more confident spinning counter clockwise with my left feet than the right and I'm confused. Xoxo. You're awesome 😘
That is a hard one to answer. It is really a matter of developing and fine-tuning the muscles in your ankle and calf so that you can balance on just the ball of your foot. perhaps doing some calf raises, and toe raises to build those muscles up might help.
Got the spinner you recommend. On ice I've been working on my two foot spin which is still very "hit or miss" (I happened to "hit" when they were testing at the end of the last class block so I've officially "passed" Adult 5). Right now, I'm just trying to get to be able to consistently do one turn in the first position you show. Mostly I manage half to three-quarters of a turn before I'm not able to stay on the spinner (choice is step off or fall down). I figure I'll get there eventually.
Hello from Sweden. I bought this spinner (from the US ) to my two daughters who skate after watching your video. It arrived today. They are quite good at spins on the ice but are having some problems with the camel spin. They keep falling off this spinner and having hard finding balance even in one foot spin. But it is the first day of practicing on it ;-) . How long should we expect it to take before they master some kind of balance and can try backward spins and camel spins?
If we start with the knee bent to mimic the LO entry, at which point do we straighten it, on the hook or the pull in. Or do we keep it slightly bent and press down into the floor ?
When I wanted to purchase the Jerry's spinner the shipping adds up more expensive than a Mad Spinner, I will try the Mad Spinner first and get this one to try as well (so I will have two spinners to have my husband to spin alongside with me, hahaha).
So you keep your foot flat? I was hoping the spinner would help me find my sweet spot, but perhaps none of the spinners do that. How is it practicing turns on the Jerry's?
With the Jerry’s Spinner, you do keep your foot flat. It is also good for practicing jump takeoffs, but not so much for practicing turns, like Three Turns or Choctaw’s.
Hi Coach, I commented before I used and did a spin with my Jerry's spinner. I had two skate days last weekend and did a one foot spin on the ice. I owe it to this video, thank you

Thank you. I'm having a hard time with the spinner but will continue practicing. Love the tutorials!
You got this!
@@CoachJulia is there a foot position on the spinner you recommend?
Simply Organized, LLC I usually put my foot on it diagonally and towards the front of the spinner.

Welcome to Figure Skating! Isn’t it great that There are lots of things you can practice off ice that will help you on ice!?

Still waiting for my spinner, and I definitely will be rewatching this as it’s very helpful!

It gets better on its own just with practice. Just keep spinning⛸️
Just become 1 thats the easy option 🙀
Great video thankyou. I've practised only a few times since watching but ALREADY there is more control than before.
Excellent! Keep it up!
I really want to start skating and your videos are a huge inspiration for me! 💗 Do you have any tips for beginners?

When is the new mobile app coming out?

You are looking much better than before surgery
Thanks. I am healing very well. Hopefully I will be able to put my skates back on when the rinks open back up.
Sweet, hope to see you on the ice.
I can’t find ur Instagram Address!! Where can I the same spinner to order?!
I used an old baking sheet before I ordered a real spinner, but I still find it so scary...:)
WOw, so creative, I admire your ingenuity.
I’m better at entering spins from backwards at this point because I learned it without thinking about it lol.

I think that’s normal because I’m left handed but when I spin counter clockwise it is on my right foot
Hello! Could you please show how to do cross spin back and forth. Thankyou!
Me: (watches this instead of practicing pirouettes even though I don’t skate and I should be doing ballet rn) *yos I can spin now*
😂 Well, we get inspiration from all places don’t we.
I bought myself this same spinner and absolutely LOVE it! Well worth the $$
Great to hear!
I just got a spinner, it cost 150 bucks
Oh this popped just in time! First class of doing this today and it was just wrong lol! I got my edea spinner so hopefully this will help me

Any tips to avoid rocking back on heel? I am still learning and this video has been so helpful but I notice I end up going back on my heel a lot.

It is such a challenge! Such fine tuning of the muscles.
I got mine from Jerry’s today on your recommendation and I can do back and forward upright already thank you Julia 😁
Wonderful!
I love this video. On to my spinner I go. Thank you!! 💚🌸

I might throw up after this, but thank you!!!!
Sorry! 😆

Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video as always, super helpful.
Glad to hear that!
Thank you sooo much!! More off ice exercises please 🥰

Do you think a beginner (still learning crossover on ice, not onto spins yet) can do this as well (to prepare the body to one day do spins on ice)?
Absolutely! it would be great practice for you.
Danke!
So sorry I didn't see this sooner! Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for this video, currently i’m waiting for my spinner and i’ll definitly use this for my exercises❤️❤️❤️

@1:18 and I'm left-handed and spin both ways. You should try to get better and learn this.
