UConn can possibly play UCLA in the Cayman Island Classic. That tourney is going to be the highlight of the Thanksgiving weekend with LSU and Virginia Tech also competing in the tournament. That tourney also includes Virginia, Tulane, Niagara, and Kansas.
UCLA will definitely be a Final Four contender with Betts, especially since Charisma Osborne is returning. They'll have one of the best backcourts in the country with Osborne, Rice, and Jaquez. They also have a strong frontcourt with the addition of Betts and freshman, Amanda Muse. (Muse is a sleeper that will make a major impact in the PAC12, much like Sonia Citron did at Notre Dame/ACC. Yes, she's a McDonald's All-American, but she's not getting any hype compared to JuJu or Jada.) They would've been even stronger as a team if Jada Williams hadn't decommited and signed with Arizona.
I don't think bringing in any big from the portal will impact any of the guards like Paige, Azzi, or Nika. It would impact the playing time for the wings and bigs. But UConn has unproven size except for Aaliyah. I hope Ice proves to be everything the staff believe she'll become. But Amari needs to make some huge strides if she wants any playing time. Ayanna showed good improvement during the year but still looks lost at times. Jana has talent but she's also unproven. Bringing in a veteran big would be great to match up against teams like UCLA, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Someone like Lauren Ware, transferring out of Arizona, could really fill a needed role, especially on the defensive end and on the glass. A veteran would also help with the development with the younger players like Jana, Ice, and Ayanna. And UConn will have smaller, more athletic players like Aubrey and Qadence to utilize against more athletic, less big, teams Ohio St, LSU, Iowa, etc.
I don't think Amari is going anywhere. She's too tied in with the team and going to UConn. She's found her niche. That said, Inês is the only player I see that might enter the transfer portal. With the return of Paige, and the addition of KK and Ashlynn, UConn is five deep at guard, with the possibility of Caroline and Qadence also impacting the guard position. That spells hardly any playing time for Inês. Now, Inês seems very content being part of the team at UConn. She's in a place she never, ever thought she would be. If she's content with that, then more power to her and players don't have to play in games to be important and integral parts of a team. However, if she wants more playing time, I'm sure there are smaller schools out there where Inês can get a lot more playing time, possibly becoming a starter in a year or two.
The portal door is closing rapidly but there's still time within the next two weeks for players to enter. I know that some schools are finishing up their spring semester/quarter within the next few weeks and there might be some players waiting to finish the semester/quarter before announcing that they want to transfer so they can focus on their studies and not have to deal with any campus fallout after their announcement. So maybe there's a chance that one more talented big will become available in the portal.
Great episode, guys! Keep up the stellar work!

I agree to a point there're going to be a few teams that can lay that claim especially if HVL goes to LSU along with Morrow. Or SC if morrow decides to go there. UCLA picking up Betts is huge for them. Look let's face it the game has finally caught up to UConn & parity is finally here. Way more teams having a legit shot thanks to the growth of the game. Lots of great kids coming out of high school now plenty to go around.

deBerry hasn't yet stepped up to D1 college level.. her turnovers and tentative passes, lack of physicality, late defensive rotations and poor defense (too much fouling) is why she is usually parked way down on the bench. It's 100% up to deBerry to fix, and UCONN staff absolutely want to help her get there, but she is running out of time. Transferring to a lower quality team won't fix her problems, although it may camouflage them. Azzi needs to find a way to deal with ball pressure... she is still a guard... picking up her dribble or making bad passes under a press isn't going to cut it in playoff time. Poor choices under back court pressure is a known issue for Azzi.. and Paige needs someone she can rely on to break the 2 man pressure that is undoubtedly heading her way. Azzi cannot afford to lose confidence under pressure.. and when she does, Geno has (and will) bench her, despite her amazing shooting ability. Paige, Aaliyah and Aubrey are going to need a good big and a good shooter to make this work.. and those players need to be rock solid on both ends of the court. Azzi is a good guard defender.. Amari could be a good inside defender... but both need to fix the holes to level up to D1 leadership. Looking forward to seeing what Ice Brady does her first full season.

They also have the kid from Egypt 6'4" Jana.Guess you forgot that in all your wisdom. With Paige back and healthy Azzi can go back to the 2 guard and not have to worry about handling the rock so much.

Has Geno ever recruited any JUCO players, especially recently? I'm trying to think of any and none come to mind. I know Inês was supposed to go to a junior college, but has he ever recruited directly from one. The reason why I ask is because there's a player that just came across my radar is Sakima Walker. She was the JUCO Player of the Year this past season. She's the daughter of former NBA player and Louisville great, Samaki Walker. She's a 6'5" post. I'm not sure of her offensive skills, especially away from the rim, but she's supposedly a defensive stopper. She probably has decent footwork and knowledge around the rim that was passed on to her by her father. It would be really nice to have an actual post presence along with Ice. Ayanna, Amari, and Jana, are unproven to be able to guard the post or be a formidable offensive presence down low.

How can you run the wheels off your starters in games you're ahead by 15 to 20pt each quarter? UCONN stop blaming the talent and start blaming the individual holding the them back.

Yeah they only got 3 of the top 15 rated high school players this year. look it's not so much UConn is on the downside. Shit he played the toughest non conference schedule and lost a total of ten games over the last 2 years. With more injuries to star players than most. More like there are so many great players coming out of high school now compared to even ten years ago.
Other teams and programs have finally caught up to what teams like Stanford, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Baylor, UConn, SC have done over the years. The pool of great players is much larger now that the game has quadrupled in popularity at the high school level over the past 10 or so years. So it's not so much UConn is down but others have caught up. Geno has always said that means great things for the womans game that he has dedicated his life in to trying to grow.
look will UConn be like they were when Stewey won 4 in a row or when Bird & Taurasi played no never again neither will any team ever be that dominant. But even Dawn Staley said don't count them out because she knows what they have returning and what they have recruited this year. Her exact quote was having there streak broken does not mean a thing thats all it means is that Geno will start another one. UConn will be in the mix but after this year all the fifth year covid stuff ends. 5th year players like HVL will not be eligible that will end some of the insanity. Yes the portal will still exist but 5th year is done. Unless of course you Injury red Shirt or sit out a year.
In closing people can hate on the guy all they want he still can coach the shit out of the game and he will leave it knowing he and a handful of other great coaches have grown the game to where it is today. Sorry about my reply being so long.Have a blessed day😉

There were no transgenders on South Carolina or LSU this year . The Transgenders have to lower their Testosterone levels to normal female levels ( taking Lupron or a different drug for 18 months). The Penn swimmer did this 3 years ago; the new stricter rules force the levels to be almost undetectable for International track and swimming.
