As a newly minted Iowa women's basketball fan, I would LOVE to see Lauren Betts sign with Iowa. There is a hole left to fill with the graduation of Monika Czinano, and while O'Grady is great off the bench, Betts would be a better starter in this position. And LSU's bench shooting is what doomed Iowa in the Championship (along with some questionable officiating). The addition of Lauren Betts in the paint would not only give Caitlin a BIG target for passing, but would get them more rebounds as well. I can't wait to see what this team accomplishes next season, regardless of what the transfer portal does.

There was questionable officiating for both sides. I'm not sure if I've ever watched any game of men's or women's basketball where there was not a questionable or bad call from a referee. The officiating did not cause the 17-point deficit. The bottom line is that LSU played the better game that day and was indisputably the winner.

Iowa also benefited from very questionable calls against SC that handicapped the gamecocks. As a result, Boston spent much time on the bench and had to play gingerly when she was in the game. SC was a nightmare matchup for LSU and had already beaten them by 24. The championship game would have been similar. There were questionable calls against both teams in the LSU vs Iowa matchup. However, ever call against Caitlin Clark was legit. The two push offs especially. It's something she does a lot. I would have loved to have seen Betts and Clark together though. Instead, she will be teaming up with the # 2 player in her high school class Kiki Rice. They should be a dynamic duo.

Colorado, she'd like it being closer to home, but i don't see them really going that far this year.

I hope so badly you are right that she ends up at Iowa. Iowa's offense is 4 perimeters and 1 post as is much of the B1G. However, USC completely embarrassed Iowa on the glass as well as LSU and others. Betts at 6'7", O'Grady at 6'5", and a very athletic 6'2" Stuelke would definitely help to neutralize that if Iowa needed. Oh yeah, Caitlin Clark still droppin dimes...heard she can score some too.

Plus Paige Bueckers returns along with Aaliyah Edwards, Azzi Fudd, Ice Brady, Nika Muhl, Aubrey Griffin, Caroline Ducharme, and a powerful bench for UConn. They are the team to beat for the Natty. My 2 cents on the transfer portal... for some it will work, and for others it will fail miserably. Talent will rise to the top and transferring will help talent get to the floor. Some of these players looking to transfer, will now move into a system they don't know, and if they aren't already gaining floor time they may find the same status at the new school. The portal should make picking the right 1st school the priority for a lot of these kids.

That’s college sports in general. So I personally am for it. It helps the schools get a more refined player to fulfill a definite need, it also helps add to parity of the sport. TCU went from 5-7 the previous year to 1 loss sea so thanks to 7 key portal players. Woman’s basketball the national champion also won the portal battle in Reese. For the player it gives them the same mobility anyone else would have from the coaches leaving when they want or like any fan that changes a job for a better situation. Players should also have that ability find their best situation as there are only so. Any snaps, passes, swings or dribbles

I grew up in the Iowa City area, so I would love to see Lauren choose Iowa. She does have the connection with HS teammate Addison O'Grady, plus she played w/ Caitlin on the USA squad. She would be the immediate starter there, and have plenty of exposure and NIL opportunity. There is a sports writer for an area newspaper who claims insight that Betts is NOT choosing the Hawkeyes. ? Others list not only Colorado, but UCLA as a destination, but I think it's a lot of speculation, and Lauren seems to be keeping things quite close to the vest. By the way, Iowa may have another spot available from a possible medical redshirt for incoming (and severely injured) freshman Ava Jones. So could you imagine both Betts and Morrow playing w/ Clark? Not even in her top 9 as I understand it. Some sources I follow say she has no interest in coming here and will stay out west. Only reason to go east would be uconn. Most indications point to ucla. Betts would be playing behind All American center Cameron Brink again should she have returned for Stanford.
Best bet would be her home state Colorado IMHO.
Also heard UCLA. More financial opportunities for NIL money in LA. Also would bring Betts and Kiki Rice together again (Team USA) along with a great incoming UCLA recruiting class.
Besides Stanford, UCLA and Notre Dame were strongly considered schools for Betts. Notre Dame would reconnect Lauren with 3 Team USA gold medalist teammates: Olivia Miles, Sonia Citron, and KK Bransford.

Most people think Betts is going to UCLA. She should go to Colorado, a Sweet 16 team on the rise, because she could do for Colorado what Rebecca Lobo did for UCONN-start a dynasty. Just imagine an old timey floor of Betts at Post, Vonleth and Miller at Forward, Sherrod and Formann at guard, with Wetta playing starting minutes off the bench. Wetta van shoot the three but she passes too much. Get her in the gym in the off season pouting in threes. Not only would it add a scoring punch to the CU attack, it would allow their current three point ace Formann more unguarded moments. CU would obviously continue to be a defensive juggernaut but Betts playing with these five turns Colorado an offensive power. The other reason for Betts at CU is that mom and dad are only 45 minutes away from 20 plus games a year and two years down the road you add little sis Sienna and mom and dad are in heaven-and CU consistently in Final Four.

first off SC is out. No way she goes there because they have Cardoso. It's not always a good thing to have two 6'7" players in the paint. if they did do that it doesn't automatically mean championship. Till they resolve their outside shooting dilemma which everybody who knows. last year was there achilles heal they were very beatable because of it. (yeah I know 1 loss but they got taken to OT twice) I think if she was home sick she goes to Colorado if not UCLA is a good bet. I believe if Dawn keeps playing the race card every time somebody talks about how they play defense she will turn off players from wanting to go there. Dawn take your loss commend the other team and cut with the woes me every time a coach talks about a bar fight playing your team. Your defensive scheme is physical so what. Basketball is a contact sport. I don't care if she has her team play that way but when somebody calls her out on it she pulls the race card. I for one am sick of hearing it. Quit with the talk. Figure out how to defend the pick and roll. The loss to Iowa was because she was terrible at her in game adjustments to what Iowa was doing. That loss falls squarely on her. I was shocked she was supposed to be this great coach and she seemed lost as to what to do in the Iowa game. maybe she should have consulted Kim Mulkey at half time!!!!

Betts has ton of potential. She has the dominance near the rim like B.G. but....she is not B.G. yet. If coaches like Tara V. give p.t. to highly-talented/recruited freshmen so as to keep them happy and content - that's the end of women's basketball as we know it. For instance, Aliyah Boston had the great credentials coming into S.C. but upon arrival she wasn't playing behind an All American like Aja - the starting position was her's to lose. Betts came in and was playing behind a more mobile, game changer, now All American in Brink. Posts like Brink are the future in women's bball - whereas Betts needs LOTS of work getting quicker in transition. Betts could have kept the position as 1st post off the bench, but she got outworked by a senior in Fran Belibi, a dunking post who was far superior on the Stanford system and hustle boards - again, a senior and Brink finally got a clue as to what foul trouble meant. Add to that also another senior 5 in Ashten Prechtel whose 3 pt range helped them win a Natl. Champshp. Who knew this would all become a curse? You shared an excellent but obviously forgotten quote by Betts. Now next year only Brink will be returning as a senior and a 5 so there has to be more to Betts' move than freshman year P.T. Sadly, I bet Tara V. learned a Stanford education, again a Stanford education, doesn't hold its weight when up against playing time for freshmen psyche AND NILs. Betts will land where the team is strong, no doubt, but also where the NILs are tremendous and where her sister can also land in a few yrs. Stanford can't utilize the transfer portal as others due to its Admission demands - there are no hardship academic cases that can slip in. This past season did show Stanford in a funk. IMHO the senior leadership who have won a Natl Champ expressed always how much the team enjoyed one another and less about how they're pissed about losing regular season PAC games or the need to outwork their opponents. That part was left up to the staff to feel - remember who is on that staff. Then enter Ole Miss into Maples and all was revealed. Hard-nosed leadership examples left with the Hulls and Wilson. Hope Betts lands somewhere that will push her hard...UConn would prepare her best as seen in Dolson and her conditioning/transition. Join Staley and still once again, the need is still perimeter shooting no matter how big the low block sitters can be. Look forward to more of your insight into today's game - you made great points!

Stanford didn't play Betts because they have Cameron Brink who is more experienced and also a powerhouse on the glass. Coach VanDerveer didn't give Betts a whole lot of playing time simply because they already have a dominant post player. As to Betts possibly going to South Carolina I'm certain that she won't because they already have Kamilla Cardoso who has pretty much the same skill set (same height, position, athleticism, etc.) as Betts so she won't come off the bench much there either. The best fit for her is obviously Iowa, she would be a starter for sure, get the minutes she wants, get a chance to contend for a national title, and most importantly she would experience vast player development because of our post player genius wizard Jan Jensen.

@@QuitaLovesSports Yes I do. After the magic Clark year and the jump in viewership that it caused, I think NIL will jump dramatically in NCAA Women's BBall. It's an excellent time to test the market and it's showing in the quality of players in the portal. We're likely to see fewer women leaving college early for the draft because women's college basketball will likely pay more than the WNBA for the big names (and marginal names too).
Unless Iowa can get their NIL house in order, I think it will be really hard for Bluder to pick up any big name transfers. The Hawkeyes have been taking sizeable hits in the big NIL sports, and the biggest name they've picked up in any sport since the beginning of the Portal era is a second string Senior QB from Michigan. That's terrible. They've got to be one of the very worst NIL schools in the country. The AD has hamstrung NILs. Hopefully Clark can change their way of thinking.

I don't disagree with anything you said about PT and the transfer portal -- but really that's a shame for some of these talented players.
There's an old saying that goes, "If you're always the smartest person in the room, that just means you're in the wrong room." Similarly, "if you're always the best player on the court, that just means you're on the wrong court."
Yes, if you go to UCONN or SC or Stanford, you're probably not going to start right away. You're probably not going to be the best player on the court even in practice. You're going to have to outplay your teammates in practice for every game minute you earn because none will be GIVEN to you. And at the end of your college days you will be that much better a player for all those minutes spent battling against high-level talent in practice. That's the point of the old saying right? You don't get better by playing people who are not as good as you are -- you get better by playing against people who are better than you. That's how you elevate your game. If you don't WANT to do that, that just tells me you probably don't have the heart to make it to the next level.
I think the bigger issue right now is that the NIL money is too important. I.e., you get no minutes, you get no NIL money because no one sees you. That is going to be the main factor driving the portal in coming years.

UConn, LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina, Utah, and a couple other teams will be good next year. Caitlin can't do it on her own. She needs help, especially on defense. A 6-7 girl and then O'Grady is what? 6-4? That's done good size that will create a no fly zone in the paint on defense and then Clark's points will be more powerful.

I don't agree with your position that coaches need to re-evaluate playing time for freshman in the time of the transfer portal. Perhaps with an average program, yes. But with an elite program like Stanford, she can still afford to make freshman earn their playing time. Betts may have been a top ranked high school player, but we don't know what her practice habits are, and that might be keeping her game minutes down. The fact is, even if someone like Betts leaves because of the transfer portal, it is just as easy for Tara to get a player to replace them from the portal. This may not be the case for a program like Colorado or Auburn, or similar. But Stanford, LSU, South Carolina, and UConn can make top players earn their playing time, and sit them if necessary as a result. If Betts isn't happy and is transferring those programs are not gonna be too worried about it because they can get another, more seasoned player, out of the portal for the upcoming season.

The NCAA set themselves up to being forced to create this type of transfer situation. They were too draconian and inconsistent in who the approved and turned down. I think they did this to stave off eventual law suits that were sure to come. Had the acted earlier and created more reasonable transfer rules it never would have come to this. For example they could have allowed a free transfer for freshman. Or perhaps allowing sophmores a free transfer which would make them give a program at least a couple years. I do not like the system as it is now, because it is not fair to in coming freshman, who can continue to be transfered over by vets from other teams. Players used to accept less playing time knowing they would eventually get a chance to play. Now an incoming freshan can not plan who they commit to based on the age of a teams pressent roster because it will constantly be up for change each year.
Now that did not apply to Betts because she knew how long Brinks would be there. But what about a freshman who was ok with waiting for two years and then would have a senior transfer in over her. It was bad enough with grad transfers but now too many players can move in and not have to sit. It basically throws the entire system out of wack.

Do you mean my prediction that South Carolina would win the tournament this past year? Yes, I was totally wrong about that and so was most of America. Iowa showed up with an amazing game plan to knock them out.
I like South Carolina but I also equally like LSU, Iowa and Louisville (before the the HVL transfer).

Good question about the transfer portal. It will be interesting to see if this will breed mercenary college players that jump from school to school for a chance to win the National Championship or better NIL deals? The NBA is a mess because of free agency and many star players today, I don’t respect due to their integrity. Money is important but loyalty is also important. But, I am old school and proud of it! Hahaha

Yea we are in interesting times. I really think of it in terms of fan bases. What has really helped grow the college game in my opinion is 4 years of consistency when it came to players at schools. It’s interesting to see how that changes the fans experience

Tara doesn't need to reconsider anything! U can give a player everything they want and they'll still transfer. Tara is a 🐐 for a reason.
Please Stop linking every transfer to LSU or Iowa. It's just lazy af. Especially these top transfers who aren't gonna wanna go to EITHER! I get a lot of u ppl just started watching WCBB a month ago but, seriously 🙄.

Thanks for your comment! Tara for sure is a goat, I've personally been a Tara fan since the Ogwumike days. Tara is a legend for a reason but I really feel that players now a days are built different and likely won't want to wait for their opportunity like players did in the past.
For sure not all transfers are going to LSU and Iowa. I've only covered a handful of players in the portal, but I'll cover some more players who will likely be going to other teams. I used to play basketball so I've been watching the NCAAW for most of my life, so for sure not a newbie. Do you have a favorite team?
