What happened to the burn mark on his forehead for the rest of the series? How would it have just gone away? He is plastic and it was literally burned into him.
I would totally watch a Woody's Roundup movie in the style of Lightyear. I know a lot of people didn't like that movie, but I thought it was okay, and this would probably be the best way of continuing the franchise since 4 had a definitive ending.
I actually said this exact same thing when I saw previews for Lightyear. but I think that since Lightyear had such a rough time at the box office, I don't think they're interested in doing anything else for a while😶
I love this theory because it fits the character of Woody so well. It proves that he is a non-violent, responsible and confident who tries to keep the peace any way he can. And no, Ben, Woody didn't intentionally knock Buzz out the window. He tried to trap him behind Andy's desk. And even Woody does some not-so-nice things in Toy Story 1, he definitely comes of age in the film. He puts Buzz's needs before his own and he teaches Sid a lesson in a non-violent (albeit childhood-mauling) way.
Personal theory as to the gun Jessie fires: It belonged to Woody in the show, but was only used for the pilot, in which Woody first adopts the Gunless Law philosophy. But that's just me.
That makes sense. Either that or an outside firm was hired to handle the merchandise and they said 'he's a sheriff, probably has a gun' and ran with it.
RIP to the voice actress for Mrs. Potato Head, one of the many great talents we lost in 2022. Also to Angela Lansbury. Mrs. Potts will live forever thanks to you.
I thought you were gonna say "one of the many great talents we lost from the Toy Story films" like Don Rickles and Jim Varney (Mr Potato Head and Slinky Dog) and sadly many others like the voice for Wheezy (and tons of other characters like Mac from Cars and Heimlich from Bugs Life) and the voice for Lotso Huggin Bear to name a couple.
If this theory is true, the reason that a gun toy exists in the line up at all is because it's a 60s franchise. Before the 80s a lot of toy designs were repurposed for various things. There was a tin star trek toy gun that was the same design as other older toy guns, just with a layer of paint to look spacey. Whatever toy company had the license for woody's roundup probably knew the very basics of the show and said "he's a cowboy, use one of our gun toys and put his name on the box"
This is what I thought when I saw that toy gun. Since it's just a solid orange color it reminded me of those toy gun sets with a pistol, darts, and a target that all look the same other than some custom branding on the blister pack cardboard.
If this is like the short, I have to reiterate that Woody is pretty violently angry in the first movie and never seems to intentionally choose a less-violent path. He just tends to use stealth and tricks to achieve his ends. Though that may only be due to the fact that his opponents are pretty much always either humans or bigger/stronger toys.
Yep, this video did come to the same basic conclusion as the short, though y'all did address Woody's obvious lack of hesitance toward violence in the first movie. I don't think he really changed all that much over the course of the rest of the movies, though. As I said, his opponents were ones that he couldn't win against in a violent confrontation, so he used his smarts to beat them. There's nothing particularly noble about adjusting strategies to beat someone in a different way when you already know violence will fail.
Sure thats true but the woody we know isn’t the same person as the woody from woody’s round up and because he had never come into contact with the show as a toy before the second film it could be possible that wood didn’t end up with the same personality as he has in the show
@@IceBot360G , that's a good point, but it seems like the personality they are based on (if one exists) is biologically(?) programmed into them. Buzz didn't know about any shows or movies about him, but he, and every other Buzz toy, already know all about Star Command and Zurg, and they all act the same way. Perhaps this Woody, having been in Andy's family so long, simply diverged far enough from his original personality by accepting his job as a toy (like how Andy's Buzz differs from the other Buzz toys).
So basically, Woody is a character who enforces the law without the use of a gun... but Woody _the toy,_ who knew nothing of the original Woody from the show, gets played with like a stereotypical cowboy which inevitably means using a gun. He adopted that from Andy's playstyle. The "Reach for the sky" thing is probably his catchphrase specifically _because_ he doesn't use a gun.

in a 1995 Woody doll from thinkway toys, the toy description at the back of the box states that Andy had lost the gun resulting in an empty holster, don't think that this is an accurate reason but is interesting to note none the less
Reason I think Woody's hostler is empty is because A: toy story is meant for kids and for older people but they thought if guns were present inside the movie it would possibly give kids the wrong and potentially harmful idea, Or B: Woody did have a gun and Andy lost it or was lost before the toy was given or handed down to Andy.
While the idea of a Lighyear movie is cool, at least before we got it, I think I'd be even more hyped for a Woody movie, like an in universe film based on the old tv show or something, not important, but I think it would be awesome to watch a movie like that!
That would be so cool! Imagine a modern movie in black and white with old school puppets and stuff! It would be so unique and I'm sure Pixar could pull off something awesome with that!
I lost the guns for my GI Joes when I was a kid, but that was OK, because I used the action figures to reenact sports plays. I could see Woody's gun going missing. But, any collector would freak out if it was missing, so it probably wasn't missing.
I'm going to speculate that the gun belonged to another planned character that was going to be in the show before it was cancelled. If you look at the gun right before Jessie shoots it there's the word cowboy on it. So there's a missing cowboy probably turned gunslinger character from the Woody's Roundup show that they at least made a prototype gun for. Maybe they planned to make him Woody's brother or someone that was the town's unofficial law keeper before he went bad? Woody didn't want to have the townsfolk afraid of him so he practices law without a gun but wears a holster to remind the bad guys that he doesn't wear a gun by choice. He could but he chooses not and instead uses his wit against them. 🤷🏾♀️
the "top shelf splat", to me, sounds like a plunger noise, with a springy sheet metal, like people do with hand saws, or similar things, with touch of some wood, like when you spring a nail file on the edge of a table.
Another comparison I'm surprised you didn't mention: The story of "A Christmas Carol." Specifically the character, the Ghost of Christmas Present. He carries a scabbard, but no sword.
If I were to bet on anything, betting on the fact that the creators of the original film watched a lot of Andy Griffith growing up would be an easy one to make. Whether this was a conscious choice or not I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they incorporated this philosophy as a direct result of Andy's influence.
Maybe Al already had the gun. Let me explain. Toys Irl can come with accessories for other figures in that same toy line. Since each character from the round up gang came with one accessory, maybe Bullseye came with Woody’s gun. Woody = removable Hat Jessie = removable Hat The Prospecter = pickaxe Bullseye = his rider’s gun
As a fellow 30 something who grew up with Toy Story THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! This had bothered me for actual decades. I love you guys and all your content. This is very possibly my favorite video ever.
I'm conflicted on whether or not I buy this theory. On one hand, as you guys pointed out, one of the Woody's Roundup merch items is a toy gun. No other character has a holster, not even Pete. I also just went and watched the TV show footage from Toy Story 2 and the official extended Woody's Roundup theme song music video. He's the "rootin'est, tootin'est, shootin'est." He's shootin'. On the other hand, even in that TV series footage from TS2, the holster is empty. And Al wasn't worried about it.
To all those who commented and said J did this exact topic years ago I remember that too and the mug where the concept art of Woody had the gun in the holster.
I think the missing gun has to do with same reasoning as The Ghost of Christmas Present! He has a Scabbard for a Sword but no weapon because it represents Peace on Earth
Maybe Woody was based on early concept art of the character he’s based on. Toys based on tv shows tend to look nothing like the original character or just looks different. I mean look at the Batman Returns toys, the Penguins looks like Danny Devito.
0:51 I briefly scrolled past a video the other day that revealed this detail, and it was quite shocking. Anyway, this whole topic was a bit of a roller coaster, but you successfully found the answer.
I think woody is based on Roy Rogers who had a horse named Trigger and a dog named Bullet. He had a leading lady Dale Evans. Or Gene Autry who owned the LA Angels.
(I also watched the earlier video, unsure I commented at the time.) Carrying an empty holster wouldn't be very smart. I think Andy Taylor didn't carry one, though he let Barney carry an empty gun, which is even worse. My first thought when I began watching the earlier video was that the Woody doll would have been sold with a kid-sized toy gun -- the kid would have Woody's gun; Woody wouldn't. But the footage of the marionettes goes against that idea. I think Jessie is a trick shooter (like Annie Oakley), so she _should_ have a gun. And Bullseye is Jessie's horse, isn't he, hence the name? Would the Jessie and Bullseye dolls have been sold together?
Woody not carrying a gun may also be an homage to the Jimmy Stewart movie "Destry Rides Again" in which the title character, Tom Destry Jr. played by Jimmy Stewart, refuses to carry a gun as sheriff. O-O
Just writing this up because it's the first time I noticed it. In the shot in Toy Story 2 at around 2:55, you can see from the Life magazine cover that Woody, on the show, didn't have a gun in his holster either. This might have been an in-universe decision since it was a show made in the 50s for kids. Just a guess, I haven't finished watching the video yet.
Immediately thought of Andy Taylor before the quote popped up, always thought that Woody was a combination of Andy and Barney from The Andy Griffith Show.
Back when I was a kid carrying around my own woody like Andy, most people kept pointing out and questioning me why woody doesn't have a gun like I worked on the movie.
My first thought was that the original network of the Woody show in-universe did not want to feature a good guy with a gun (or maybe no guns at all) due to strict moral rules in children's entertainment show production of the time. My headcanon is that that still applies, but the makers of the tv show made a virtue out of a production restriction and gave Woody the "does not like guns" character trait.
This simple yet complicated case only makes sense if the toy gun we saw in Toy Story 2 that Jessie used is actually part of a different brand of toys that is just… there in Al’s apartment.
As you have said... Woody comes from the 1950s, and the makers may have omitted the gun for reasons like: it's a small chokeable object that can be easily be lost. And it's a long time ago, so accessories like that would be impossible to locate. Maybe Andy's father has it???
Did Sid ever try to tell anyone (other than his sister for a brief moment) about the toys being alive? Also, maybe you could do a "What If" video where Sid tells Andy the toys are alive and Andy believes him.
I always enjoyed the legs and feet thing. Kinda puts me in to the mind state that I was in when I first saw the movie and I was super short…cuz ya know I was a child
What about that green gun that potato head was holding when Andy is playing with his toys in the original’s opening scene? Would that gun fit Woody’s holster?
I think the reason Woody doesn’t have a gun is because the animators would have to animate the gun moving around inside the holster. All the action movements woody makes, you’d have to account for the movement
i know this isnt a toy story related thing. but could students fly a broom to hogsmeade? in the books they are always walking, IE katie bell what if she flew her broom to the 2 broomsticks the day she touched the necklace, or just normal students flying to hogsmeade! love the videos no matter the topic
This was my initial assumption when you pointed it out. Long video to confirm my own idea. But great to see my own idea of Woody appears to be confirmed in universe.
I believe that what he has a gun because on the 1995 woody doll, and on the back of some other merchandise it says that woody is a cowboy doll that has lost his gun long ago🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Y'all had a video on this awhile back didn't you? I swear this was a thing already on here🤔 I definitely forgot the reason was "gunless law" but I know I remember a holster video..am I crazy?
Or maybe it's just one of those quirks that has a dumb answer. Woody went belt shopping one day and got a good one that came with a free holster. He never owned a gun but kept it because he could put other things in it.
I always thought the reason he has a holster but no gun is the same reason I used to have Barbies with no shoes....kids don't keep up with the little parts.
In a Christmas carol the ghost of Christmas present carries a scabbard but no sword in reference to peace on earth. Scabbards are oftentimes very beautiful
2:05 So did I. My little brother has a BIN FULL OF TOYS! I had a bin of a similar size, but used it mostly for toy wooden/plastic train tracks(was a big fan of Thomas back then, had costumes and everything) 7:05 Happened to Leonardo Da Vinci. Funny story, guy was working on a clay mould for casting it into a giant bronze statue of a horse. He had the clay figure done(with many hours of horse anatomy studies) and he had the bronze to do it. What happened? Some army invaded that part of Italy, the Duke of something-or-other used Leo's bronze for cannons, foreign army took over, used Leo's clay horse for, you guessed it: Target Practice. Only remains were rubble that's impossible to recover now...
I feel like showing only the feet of the humans was an artistic choice because it gives a better perspective of what it’s like through the eyes of the toys. It wasn’t a limitation.
It's an artistic choice that was made from a very specific limitation. Many aspects of the film work really well in tandem due to the choices made. That's a big part of why it's held up.
What about the the prize badge on his holster? That might imply he won a shooting competition! So at the very least he knows how to use a gun, an expert, but will not use outside a sporting context.
What other unresolved questions do you have about Toy Story?!
Mbe Make a video if you think there will be a toy story 5.
How are there multiple Andys?
What happened to the burn mark on his forehead for the rest of the series?
How would it have just gone away? He is plastic and it was literally burned into him.
What would happen if all the toys in Toy Story show the humans that they’re alive?

As you have said... Woody comes from the 1950s, and the makers may have omitted the gun for reasons like: it's a small chokeable object that can be easily be lost. And it's a long time ago, so accessories like that would be impossible to locate.
Maybe Andy's father has it???
Remake of the old video?
We've come a long way since then and thought this one deserved a face lift 😃
@@SuperCarlinBrothers Good thinking, I say!
@@SuperCarlinBrothers but why did you delete the Short version them at you released a few days ago?
@@SuperCarlinBrothers What happened to the nail in the coffin of the concept art mug having a gun in Woody's holster, then?
Didn't they already make a video about this topic 6 years ago???
Re upload?
This is the second video Iv watched on UA-cam this week that talks about this subject (woody not having a gun).
i always though the toy would not have ever included a gun because it would small, easily lost and be a choking hazard.
Did Sid ever try to tell anyone (other than his sister for a brief moment) about the toys being alive? Also, maybe you could do a "What If" video where Sid tells Andy the toys are alive and Andy believes him.
Hey Brother a real blast and you keep making content that you are curious about, as I believe we are as well! Spot on as usual Thanks again!
That actually makes ALOT of sense, I had always wondering why he had an empty gun holster
I absolutely love The Andy Griffith Show.
I always enjoyed the legs and feet thing. Kinda puts me in to the mind state that I was in when I first saw the movie and I was super short…cuz ya know I was a child
Huh a remake of a precious video? Interesting.
At 4:13 in, Sherif Andy Taylor in The Andy Griffith Show Always has an empty holster while in uniform.
Haven’t you already made a video about this a few years ago?
6 years ago, to be exact. I went back and looked and almost had an aneurysm when i realized how many years I've been watching these two.
What about that green gun that potato head was holding when Andy is playing with his toys in the original’s opening scene? Would that gun fit Woody’s holster?
Apparently too big for the holster. Looks like maybe the green gun is supposed to be a water pistol.
Didn't you post a video on this exact topic with the same conclusion about the gunless law card like years ago?
I remember owning a Woody when I was a kid, I remember owning a tiny toy gun that actually fit in Woody’s holster.
But great to see my own idea of Woody appears to be confirmed in universe.
you’ve already made this theory …..
Andy Taylor is the sheriff. Andy Griffith is the actor.
Or maybe it's just one of those quirks that has a dumb answer. Woody went belt shopping one day and got a good one that came with a free holster. He never owned a gun but kept it because he could put other things in it.
That video game was my childhood. I replayed it recently
Which one? I'm guessing you mean TS2, but there was a TS3 videogame apparently.
I played that Toy Story game growing up,you can't nostalgia me like that
J made a video on this years ago why bring it back up when nothing has changed?
you have done this one already :/
Are y’all gonna do strange world stuff?? Would LOVE to watch y’all’s full review of that 😊
Is this a reupload?
Is this a re-release because I swear I’ve seen this video from you guys a long time ago..
Sid waving his arms around like that gets me every time. 😂 it kinda reminds me of Adventure Time.
Sid
@@oliverpony Thanks! I'm not sure where I got that spelling of the name.
I had a bin of a similar size, but used it mostly for toy wooden/plastic train tracks(was a big fan of Thomas back then, had costumes and everything)
7:05 Happened to Leonardo Da Vinci.
Yall did a video on this 6 years ago. Glad to see an update
Talk about Sid's psychological damage all you want, but the dude looks pretty happy in TS3 and is on a decently well paid career path at just 22
That's why he became a garbage collector. So that he can rescue discarded toys find new homes for them, like what Woody in the 4th film.
